2 comments about Rolls-Royce and Bentley Collector's Guide: V4, 1980-98: Silver Spirit to Azure (Acollector's Guide).
  1. This book is more of a guide to the Rolls-Royce and Bentley range than an actual collector's guide. There is a comprehensive history of the development of the 1980-98 series, with plenty of photos and information tables. I was disappointed that there is very little "guidance" to this guide. One would expect that a book claiming to be a "Collector's Guide" would offer more on what to look for in terms of buying a 20-plus-year Proper Motor Car, including what model years, if any, to avoid, and how to evaluate the physical and mechanical well-being of the cars. Buy the book as a good initial reference if you're about to begin your research before you buy a Rolls or Bentley, but wait until it's on sale.

  2. This book was very thorough . . . had great detail on the history of this generation of car that it covered, and it had very specific model & manufacturing information. The book did not go into detail as far as mechanics go, as that was not its intention. It also did not have as many color prints of vehicles, as I would've liked, but it was definitely a 5-Star book. I recently purchased a 1981 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, and I bought this book when searching for any books that had more information about the car. This book was a very entertaining companion to the vehicle. :)

5 comments about The Shadow Owners' Companion: Maintenance Projects for Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and Bentley T Enthusiasts.
  1. If you have a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow or are thinking of buying one, this is your #1 must-have publication. It's the only step-by-step manual on how to maintain them. The factory service manuals are great, but don't explain the how and why of some of the systems and they certainly don't explain how to actually perform some of the necessary tasks. This book is a bargain at $40.

  2. Really useful book for the DIYers, in order to help keeping our cars on the road. Very clearly explained with helpful pictures

  3. I have read my recently purchased Shadow Owners' Companion book and have found it very informative. I have been relying on my Owners Handbook for all these years and it is nice to have something that has more in depth information. I apprecaite the author sharing his time and effort in detail for the rest of us to learn from.

  4. I am a reasonably talented amateur mechanic, and a long time car enthusiast/restorer. I was always a bit nervous about buying a Silver Shadow, because I know they are complicated, and very advanced (for their time) automobiles. This book completely explains all of the intricate working of these cars, and more importantly, shows how the home mechanic/enthusiast can take care of most of the regular maintenance, and smaller repairs themselves, rather than having to pay specialists for all of the required work. There are even sections on restoration of woodwork, paintwork, etc. Much more than just a shop manual supplement, this book is absolutely essential for the current owner or anyone contemplating the purchase of one of these Rolls-Royce. It is the best money you will spend, before, during, or after your aquisition of a Silver Shadow.

  5. In you have one of these cars this book will refund your its cover price the first time you do any task covered within.
The Shadow Companion makes a complicated car a lot less daunting. Even if you don't do your own work, this book will assist you by explaining in clear terms the work involved n most tasks required with these cars and will make you a smarter and more knowledgeable owner and that should save you money at the shop. It breaks down many jobs simply enough that it will tempt you into trying things yourself you may have thought were beyond you and like the Muir's famous VW book, if you follow the directions you won't get into trouble. An essential for Shadow owners everywhere.

  1. Of all the books I have about these automobiles, this one is the best with excellent copy and wonderful photographs.

  2. This book is a piece of crap.
    Reasons:
    Photography quality is poor
The history of both Rolls-Royce and Bentley is inconsistent in the development of both cars over theie production history
Key areas are abbreviated such as the Phantom II & III and the 20/25. Most custom coachwork is reserved for post WWII while there is not much of a spectrum in the pre-war models.
The printing of the book in a landscape format instead of a portrait format my seem a nice way to presenting full views of the cars but it also cuts down on the author's need to write a whole lot of text.

Give me one of the Dalton Watson books on the Rolls any day of the week.

After all what do you expect from the publisher of a weekly car newspaper - quality?
