2 comments about The Conspiracy of Pontiac and the Indian War after the Conquest of Canada, Volume 2: From the Spring of 1763 to the Death of Pontiac (Conspiracy of Pontiac & the Indian War After the Conquest of).
  1. This book and its follow-on volume 2 of 2 provide us with rare detail of a mostly forgotten chapter of American history. While Francis Parkman is best known for his 7-volume masterpiece "France and England in North America, as well as numerous accounts of Westward expansion, this more focused 2-volume work, in my opinion, brings forward his most impressive writing skills. Parkman literally paints with words, including the most descriptive interpretations I have ever read of the early American frontier and the fascinating range of peoples vying for control or mere survival.

These two volumes are a true pleasure to read and a treasure for those who enjoy the history of North America and its peoples, as well as those who appreciate the power and beauty of the written word.

  2. this book set everything in motion in regard to this era the fiery speeches of Pontiac alone make the Ottawa chief a character of Shakespearren proportions. This book is not cold historical interpretation but is packed with emotion and tragedy.

  1. Based on total breakdown?
    I don't think so.
If you want to learn how to change spark plugs, this is a halfway decent manual. Otherwise, don't waste you money.

  1. I don't so much have a problem with the instructions, but the pictures are just not acceptable. They're often so dark and blurry that they resemble a Rorschach test more than any kind of discernable auto part. Even daguerreotype quality photos would have been an improvement. And frequently the instructions refer to auto parts that don't even merit a picture, which exercises one deductive reasoning skills, I suppose. Note to editors: PICTURES ARE IMPORTANT! If a person doesn't know what a certain part looks like, he's a bit lost when he's told to remove it or adjust it. To be fair, I couldn't have done a lot of repairs without this book, but that was in spite of the sadistic photographic illustrations.

  2. Mr Wanger's book is an interesting historical perspective on the development of the muscle car era at the Pontiac division. It seems to be a very complete history of the development of the GTO with details that can only be known by a industy insider. My only critisim is that that while he alludes to the real bad boy Super Duties in several places he never really spells out what they were "bad to the bone dual quad, 12to1 compression ratio 421's" These were truly Pontiac's finest hour. He also does not do justice to the great Malcom MacKeller whos genious was reponsible for the development of a whole series of camshafts used at Pontiac includ- ing the Super Duties. Wangers remembers lots of racing in the book and the cheating that often took place;he does not recount the night that after bragging that he had the fastest" GTO on Woodward " he ran a race against a 1962 white Catalina with a real 421 Super Duty not a consumer version with three two's. The outcome of that encounter very well could be be deeply reperessed as the Catalina led him by a football field at a 110 mph. This encounter happened in 1967 and it might be called Wolf in Sheep's Clothing or The Night Encouner with Super Duty #3 vin#16373. All in all I would recommend this book to anyone in Pontiac history but its not the last word on on the subject.

  3. I am a big pontiac fan, i own a 1966 GTO conv. with a 455, turbo 400, 4.56 gears, runs mid elevens and i drive it on the street. my wife has a 1976 formula 400 also. so i am big on performance and nastalgia also. the book was good dont get me wrong, butnot what i thought it would be! jim wangers is a pontiac and GTO legend to us poncho guys,i thought the entire book would be about pontiacs and their great performance of the sixties, instead i read a lot of negitive things about ponchos.even the pictures like the one of the swiss cheese catalina racing the ford, he said he lost that race, come on jim, your not supposed to say that, let us guys have a little glory please! and telling of losing street races. and half the book was about jim with jobs with chevy, ford and keiser. sorry jim i didnt buy this book to read about 1977 mustang cobra twos or advertising about pacer wagons! give me a break! you really dropped the ball on this one! maybe some day another old pontiac racer will come out with a book and talk about some good times and real performance of pontiacs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. This book takes you back and gives you a private look at the planning and development of the car that started the whole Muscle Car Craze. From figuring out how to get this car built around GM's policies on horsepower to weight ratio, to fighting off the compitition in 1969 with the introduction of "The Judge"! How they developed the Royal Pontiac cars, and how they had to fight every step of the way with the EPA, and other government agencies! Lots of photos, and history here!

  5. A fascinating read. I could not put this book down. A well-written insider perspective on the automobile industry and American car culture. In a nutshell, Mr. Wangers is a car marketing maven. The question is, did car culture influence Mr. Wangers or did Mr. Wangers influence car culture? Did Mr. Wangers influence mass American culture? This book "asks" many questions and raises interesting points. What are the constraints in designing, marketing and engineering an automobile? What role should the govenment take? On the one hand, Mr. Wangers is lightly critical of the federal government regarding emissions and safety issues. On the other hand, he views govt. regulation as a challenge that fosters creativity and engineering prowess. Certainly, the government saved the car industry by forcing it to develop emissions and safety devices. This is a well rounded book for the Sociologist, the historian, and anybody who might enjoy a great read on the automibile industry. Nicely illustrated. There was one glaring omission: Did Wangers maintain his relationship with John DeLorean during his Cocaine distribution trial?

2 comments about Pontiac and the Indian Uprising (Great Lakes Books).
  1. For a shorter paperback work, this was a most impressive piece. Not only was the author complete in his explanation of Pontiac's War, but also gave all points of view. Many times Pontiac's own words were translated to get the effect of the messages he was trying to relay. It was very detailed in explaining The Ottawa Chief's influence over many tribes, including the western tribes of Illinois. He almost singlehandedly destroyed the English western frontier of the Great Lakes, Unfortunately as readers know, logistics win wars, and his lack of supplies did him in. The book also touched on many roles key English officers and civilians played in the developing peace, and also what role the French continued to play even after their defeat in the French and Indian War. Pontiac's defeat was the beginning of the end of the Native Americans control of this land, as sad as it is. Enjoy this wonderful book.

  2. the standard view of Pontiac sometimes gives the view that after the failure of the siege of Detroit he was finished and faded into alcoholic obscurity and then was assassinated outside a tavern(drunken Indian?) at Cahokia,Illinois. This book shows him still active and as double dealing as his enemies the British merchants backed by their little existing Royal government. It's obvious from this read that when he was murdered he was still a threat to British merchants(later American entrepreneurs)because he wanted a better deal for Indian interests. This event was a full scaled war with massacres of civilians on both sides, and one of the early recorded instances of biological warfare. The British made "peace offerings" of smallpox infected blankets and scarves. Also obvious in the book is the power of the British navy on the Great Lakes, they could resupply any post almost at whim, whereas the Indians have canoes and small barges. The British also more effectively use politics and "payoffs" in the form of gifts to isolate and make Pontiac appear a "very bad man".Technological superiority is often cited as the main reason for the British conquest of the Indian, but the political evolution of the English may have been an even bigger reason for it. Remember the british government's policy at this time is "laissez faire",which means the merchants are pretty much free to do as they want. Do you think for a second they would want Pontiac around?Finding someone to "do the job" for a blanket and a pint of ale would have been no problem on the American frontier at the time.In addition Pontiac is sympathetic and maybe even allied with the French. He might have even fared the same fee even today. There is some new material in this book that was not available to Francis Parkman and this is one of only 2 or 3 books written about Pontiac that are not children's books. It's hard due to a lack of primary sources about Pontiac to give a really accurate portrait, but this book really digs for it with great footnotes. The story of the assasination doesn't clear up who did it,but there alot of suspects, and I picked mine from the book.
