- This book details the development and history of one of the 1950's most distinctive sports cars, the Mercedes Benz "gull wing" 300 SL. It details the development of the car including photos of early prototype models. Especially interesting is the evolution of the the gull wing door design.
The car's racing heritage is described in several chapters illustrated with lots of photos. Coverage includes 1952 accomplishments in the Mille Miglia, Les 24 Heures du Mans, the German Grand Prix, and the Carrera Panamericana Mexico. History of production models is thoroughly covered including diagrams of the engine and chassis as well as exterior photos. An entire chapter is devoted to coupe models and another to roadsters. As a bonus, the appendix reprints two entire owner's manuals, one for coupes and the other for roadsters. This book contains a wealth of valuable information for the 300 SL owner or enthusiast. I highly recommend it!
