  1. Clymer manuals are pretty much the standard for after-market motorcycle repair manuals.

It covers both general maintenance and more in depth mechanics. In any Clymer manual you will find detailed drawings, instructions on how to break down the engine, and so on. This one is no different.

The M340 Clymer Repair Manual covers the GL1000 engine from 1975 to 1979 and the GL1100 Standard & Interstate engines from 1980 to 1983.

  1. Well written, great photography, well researched sidebars on significant, influential models, more than I expected for the price. Very well done.

  2. This is what a good, accurate, detailed motorcycle book is supposed to be. You get great information and fantastic pictures of original, historically important motorcycles, their riders and the facts that go with them. There is so much speculation these days by people who think they remember what happened, or what a bike was supposed to look like, or when a particular feature was added or changed in a particular model line. This book sets a lot of that straight. It seems the author knows and has spoken personally to the factory racers, mechanics, engineers and competitors to get the information. I got the impression that the author and the historic people themselves were good friends! I got a kick out of the Soichiro Honda quote the first time he rode the great CB 750 in 1969. It really brings characters to life.

Jeff Hackett is frequently used as a resource, as he is one of the top authorities on photographing and restoring old Hondas among other motorcycles. Many of the top authorities, authors and restorers have been accessed to create this book. To top it off I get great, color, engine-out photos of the famous RC-166 and RC-160 motors that so much legend has been made of.

This all in consideration, the book is not the absolute last word on Honda motorcycles, as many models, specifically US models and some others have been omitted or intentionally left-out. Thankfully, there are other top notch books like that written by Bill Silver that pick up any slack that was omitted herein, but this is the best effort so far at being far better than any "coffee table book" and definitely a must for the restorer or researcher. This is not a re-hashed and fluffed-up "coffee table book", as it is really an up-to-date, detailed history with a bit of myth and legend mixed it for good balance and flow. You should read it end to end; but, you can just as easily flip through it now and then for a "fix" as well. Either way, this is one book you should have in your collection.

For the record, I have personally started restoring old Hondas and this book no doubt will pay for itself repeatedly over the years as I take on new projects!

  3. Very nice reference book. Glad to have it as an addition to my collection..

  1. Clymer has made a great book for Honda Valkyrie repairs. Many books do not have great detail or accompanying pictures. Clymer does it right and has great schematic drawings of the electrical are great and all the technical speak in the book are comprehensible to the layman. I'm glad I got this book and I would buy it again as a first choice.

5 comments about Honda: Civic, CRX and del Sol 1984-95 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. I was looking for help for my 94 Civic.

    Good:
    - Clear diagrams/illustrations.
    - Clear index.

    Bad:
Compared with the diagrams shown for other years of Civic, I'd say there are fewer diagrams and illustrations for the 92-95 one. For example, the book shows a diagram on removing the fan/heating switch from the front panel of a model before 92, but no diagram for the 92-95 one. Also some terms used in the illustrations are not explained clearly, so I was not sure which part(s) they're referring to.

I'd rate this book better if it included a better help for the 92-95 model.

  2. The book is a well put together repair manual covering virtually ever aspect of maintenance and repair. I, being an inexperienced mechanic, was still able to do many of the repairs. I did find the text a bit difficult when it came to figuring out what part they were referring to. The detail they gave was excellent with a diagram for all models. It is a must for any Honda Civic owner.

  3. This was disappointing. The "Total Car Care" repair manual had non-detailed drawings instead of photos leaving you with only a vague idea of where the part that you are looking for is in relation to the rest of your car. The text was about as good as the graphics... it could have been more detailed and/or descriptive. Another probelm was that the graphics gave only a single example of the procedure being described (as shown for the '84-'87 CRX... not very helpful to orient you to a 95 Civic). Compared to the other manuals that I have seen (Haynes and Clymer mostly) this one left alot to be desired at about twice the price. This one will give you a ballpark idea of what you will need to do to fix your Honda, but I would consider purchasing a single-model specific repair manual at a cheaper price.

  4. This is a fair book. Deffinatly better than Hays. Where hays explanes things in one sentence Chilton uses an entire paragraph. However it does not contain all the diagnosis I wanted and it is plagued with misprints and occasionaly contridicts itself.

  5. This book is chock full of errors. I don't have any faith in the contents of this book. Color codes of wires are incorrect in troubleshooting areas, and there is poor coverage of all model years, especially newer ones. The book tells you what fault codes are but it does not tell you how to access them. I own two Hondas and I end up using the internet to get the information this book, more often than not, neglects to include. Purchase at your own risk -- it's too bad that it is the only book on the market for many Honda models.

2 comments about Haynes Honda Civic 1996-2000 & Acura Integra 1994-2000 (Haynes Automotive Manual).
  1. I have used the Haynes manuals before (for motorcyles) which have always been very good. This one for the car is not very accurate, though. For general information about overall maintenance it is worthwhile, but for the specific details in completing a repair it is sometimes grossly in error. I replaced the hood release cable, and 75% of their directions were wrong. Also, for replacing the coolant they fail to mention the drain plug on the engine (where about half of the coolant is stored) - they only mention the drain plug on the radiator. I know this because I also got the factory service manual on CD on the auction site. I would recommend getting both this book, for general maintenance info, and the factory service manual for specific procedures. Don't rely on this book alone, though, or you will be misguided.

  2. This book is good for general information but lacks details for more troubleshooting problems and also lacks detailed pictures and explanations. Being very experienced on electrical and mechanical repairs on aircrafts this book is much easier to read but I think it does not go into depth into how to properly repair things. For example it does not clearly explain how to adjust spark plugs (I had a mechanic friend explain that for me). Another problem with the book is that they sometimes use longer (and more difficult) steps instead of using logical steps. To remove a fuel filter you have to remove the backseats (for 1997 civic) and disconnect the fuel pump and then run the car until the engine is cut off before you can remove and replace the fuel filter. I found it easier just to bypass the fuse and it took just a fraction of the time to remove the fuel filter. Again, great book for reference but lacks details and it doesn't always use the most logical approach for repair and maintenance. Definitely not a book for beginners.

5 comments about Honda and Acura Performance Handbook (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. I recently purchased and finished reading from cover to cover in one sitting, Mike Ancas' Honda & Acura Performance Handbook. The book is well written and enjoyable to read. This was the first book I read about Honda and Acura performance modifications and I was happily surprised by it. The book is not a how-to book, but rather a very good introduction to the types of modifications that can be done, what will work, and what may be a waste of your money. I like that the author points out that a specific add-on to a specific system may not produce the desired results without upgrading other parts of the system which may now be a weak link in the chain. The book does a great job of providing a foundation of knowledge upon which to build. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to start.

  2. Mike Ancas' Honda and Acura Performance Handbook is an excellent introduction to Honda/Acura performance mods. This is not a how-to book, but rather a great introduction to the types of modifications, what works, and what may be a waste of money. I like the fact that the author points out the importance of considering the sum of the parts of each system when upgrading as opposed to just bolting on certain brand name parts and expecting serious performance increases. I would highly recommend this book as a great beginning to anyone just starting out.

  3. Let me start by saying this: if you are an early Civic (late-'80s through early '90s) or CRX owner, you will probably get some use out of this book. If you are not, however, YOU WON'T. Much of the focus of the book is contributed to older, single-slammer engines like those found in older Hondas. There is extremely little information about DOHC, B-series, or VTEC motors in general. I'm not saying that the information in the book is wrong or useless, but I think calling giving this book an all-encompassing title like Honda & Acura Performance gives the false impression that late-model Honda enthusiasts like me (I own a '97 GS-R) will find useful information. They won't. Also, it becomes obvious that this guy is probably on the payroll of only a couple companies, because he uses their parts as examples over and over again.
Bottom line: if you're a CRX owner who loves autocrossing for some reason and doesn't know much about the working internals of your car, buy this book. Everyone else: move along.

  4. There is no better book for 1984-1999 Hondas and Acuras. If you have a newer car, I also just bought ANcas' new book (same title, second edition) which is in FULL COLOR and covers 1999-2005 cars, including a special section just for RSX and S2000. But if you have an older Honda or Acura, this is the book for you

  5. At first I thought this book was a step by step handbook on how to get the most out of your honda, but actually it just tells you the products that are out there for your honda. I would suggest not buying it unless you don't know absolutely nothing about the products out there for your honda.

  1. If you have an Honda Nighthawk 650, you must have this book.
    It's complete and well done.
Only one negative thing, only B&W pics.
Why try to find original documents when you can buy this book? Even if you are not experienced, with this book you can afford maintenance of your bike.

  2. This shop guide is an indespensible tool for repairing and maintaining your Honda Nighthawk.

  3. This is a must-have if you own the bike. The book is quite good and illustrations are presented where necessary. My only gripe is that there should be more emphasis on troubleshooting and repairing without replacing components. This book will tell you how to remove and replace any item on your bike, but it doesn't always tell you how to spot a problem. And it never comments on how your bike could be repaired without buying a new part.

  4. I ordered a Honda Manuel for a 1978 Honda CB 550. I received a manuel for a 1983 honda CB550. I book is of little value to me. The real problem is that I still do not have a manuel for my 1978 honda CB550

  5. I know this isn't the Honda OEM manual, but I expected atleast a little bit of accuracy. I wasted 8 hours one day troubleshooting an electrical issue because THE WIRING DIAGRAM IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK IS WRONG!!!
I have since found 4 other errors in this manual.
I know its more expensive, but buy the original Honda service manual from Helm, Inc. instead.
