    Highly recommended.

  1. Why does this company have to publish these auto repair volumes on paper little better then toilet tissue? The information is fair to good, but with the poor quality paper, the photographs are almost useless for ready reference. $15- $17 is an OK price, just don't pay the list of $25. My rating would be 2.5 (50-50) if allowed.

3 comments about Ford: Pick-Ups and Bronco 1976-86 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. I have bought many of your books! But they need help. For instance Ranger 4x4 remove all the front axles! You have no lines to say how to get the passenger axle out of the PIG. You have 2 picture that you can look at but no INFO! Front axle 4x4. Some one should proof read step by step. It looks as if it was copied from incomplete information. Other then that your books not toooo bad. I preferred the old MOTOR repair manuals. Kinda like spending money on a book on fishing so you can go find a fisherman to correct what you just read! ( Get the picture )

  2. This manual cost me more than the price of the book. Following instructions written in this manual for replacing rocker arms on a 300 in-line six also cost me the price of a mechanic to do it the right way. Incorrect information should not be published in these books!

  3. So in buying this book for a comlpete brake job on my 1979 F350. I looked at every single page... Nothing in this book had the info I was looking for. I would suggest going to a local book store and seeing if the information that you realy need is in these books before buying saves time and money. Thank god I had the general knowledge to complete the job.

3 comments about Ford Pickups and Bronco, 1973-1979 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. This manual is an absolute essential for anyone who wants to work on an early ford bronco or 70's pick-up. It covers every topic from routine maintenance to engine and body repair. The content is based on a complete tear-down and rebuild of the truck. Although it is very technical subject matter, the wording is relatively simple where possible, and diagrams and photographs are very helpful. Information such as engine specifications and wiring diagrams are provided for individual year models where applicable. It does not discuss restoration explicitely, but the information it contains is as invaluable to the restorer as it is to the amatuer mechanic. In other words, this is truly THE book every early bronco owner should have on his shelf.

  2. As with most Haynes or Chilton manuals this book does give some useful information, step-by-step descriptions and nice diagrams. However it's sometimes a little vauge in it's descriptions. Also, as an early Bronco owner, this book only covers 1973 and later. This leaves 7 years of earlier production not covered.

Definitely a good reference, but I would also recommend finding an original factory Ford shop manual set. (5 book set usually found at swap meets or specialty automotive literature vendors)

  3. This is the first repair manual I bought to assist me in restoring my '76 Bronco. While it provides an adequate overview of the vehicles it tries to represent, it does not offer enough info to be useful to the more experienced do-it-yourselfer. Additionally, the coverage of pre-'78 trucks is insufficient for a manual that claims to be "Based on a complete teardown and rebuild". The only info that seems to stand out as being particularly useful are the chassis electrical schematics in the back. This manual is fine as a (very) basic reference to keep in the glovebox; however, if you're looking to do something more involved than doing a tuneup or brakes, look for a set of factory service manuals.

3 comments about Ford-Contour/Mystique/Cougar 1995-99 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. Do not purchase this book if you drive a '95 thru '98 Mercury Cougar. This manual does not have information on the 3.8L V6 or the 4.6L V8. Nor does it have information on the respective car's transmissions. This book ONLY convers '99 and '00 Cougars. The book you're looking for is "JC WHITNEY - CHILTON REPAIR MANUAL FOR 83-96 THUNDERBIRD, COUGAR."

  2. This book offers some very helpful insights for do-it-yourself car repair. The fuse and wiring diagrams are excellent, and the steps are easy to follow. I actually think this book is a much better value than the owner's manual I got with my 97 Contour. Some of the jobs in the book are not for beginners, however, and there is no list of the tools you will need before starting each job, but generally, this is a great book.

  3. If you can't afford the Mercury factory service manuals, buy
the Chilton's guide and get some of your auto repairs done
yourself. It isn't an FSM - no Chilton's manual compares
to an FSM - but it's better on avergae than Haynes' guides and
it won't get you into deep water without ample warnings.

3 comments about How to Build Big-Inch Ford Small Blocks (Cartech).
  1. A book like this is long overdue! Have you ever thought about taking your small block Ford engine and adding more cubic inches? Why fit a heavier big block engine when you can modify the small block? This book explains the reasons why and with step by step instructions shows how to do it.Plenty of photos and advice here. And,this book includes a chapter on stroker kits for the 351 Cleveland including how to build a 351C into a 408CI.

I would think that you could modify any engine using the advice in this book.

There is a list of conversion kits too.Topics include:Stroker cranks, specs,Nitrous, supercharging, cams & carbs and even tells you how to modify your car to handle the new horsepower. This book has the lot.Published by "SA Design" books who are known for their expert advice on anu engine subject. If turning your small block ford engine into a big inch engine is what you want to achieve then this book is for you.Even caters for the 351 Cleveland engine too.

  2. Much of the tech in this book is general Winsor engine related...
maybe 10 pages are stroker specific, very basic.

The rest of the book is filled with magazine like projects, meaningless pics of pistons and crank being assembled in various speed shop and endless list of mail order kits.

    Bad buy...

  3. This book has a bunch of info about building stroker engines. Learn what parts to look for and what parts make the best combination. There's also info on which companies out there offer stroker kits, as well as what comes in the kits.

  1. The 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis Shop manual has all of the data and details I have needed to repair brakes and electrical switches. Since Chilton manuals for the full size Fords aren't easily found this was a good buy
