5 comments about American Motors: The Last Independent.
  1. This is an exellent look at a mis-understood and underappreciated company. American Motors IS still with us today, under another name, yet the influence IS here. Just research the origin of the Chrysler "LH" for example. And just what is the "AM" of AMGeneral Hummer? Thanks so much to Patrick Foster for telling this wonderful story. There's still more to be told, though. How about "The Last Independent II"? The financial world of capitalism worked against this tiny company (the disasterous lakefront body plant in Wisconsin, the crushing tax burden of the Kenosha plant during the 1980's, and the "conspiracy" to make the Pacer a failure) are just a few of the hidden factors that are yet to be told. For, me "The Last Independent" is the best AMC history yet!

  2. This book is a great addition to the AMC lover's library. Mr. Fosters book covers the entire history of the once-proud American Motors, and includes many good photos of the vehicles. The books focuses on AMC as a business, so lots of financial data is included. If you really want to understand the rise and fall of the proud independent American Motors, this the book.

  3. At classic auto shows today, you can see lots of old Chevys, Fords, and Chryslers. But it's hard to find any examples of independent automotive manufacturing. Not many people seem to care about Packard, Studebaker, Hudson, Nash, and, of course, American Motors or AMC. They seem to seen as junk, not worth the steel they're made of. Patrick R. Foster in "American Motors : The Last Independent" does a wonderful job of informing the public of what effort and talent went into creating these fine cars that were a good portion of time as good, if not better, as anything the Big Three put out. You learn that AMC's demise wasn't sudden, but gradual, starting in the early 1960's. There are detailed facts about the cars that were shipped out of the Kenosha, Wisconson factory. "American Motors : The Last Independent" is all in all a good read. One of the few things it lacks is an index which I miss dearly. Even though, I would recommend it to my friends.

  4. I found this to be one of those books I could not put down. The book is a good mixture of history, inside stories and pictures. Ooooh the pictures. You get to see the 57 Rambler mock-ups wearing both a Nash and Hudson badge. Lots of other exclusive photos also. Great history of AMC mangement. Unique look into the different approachs taken to run the company and the mistakes made by each person in charge. Each time a mistake was made AMC bounced back, but a little weaker. You'll find youself wishing the ending was different.

  5. ....But I found this book to be fascinating.

AMC, over the years has produced some very unusual cars, some very UGLY cars and some very successful cars.

This book chronicles them all, and tells the story of the rising AMC under George Romney, its near death under Roy Abernethy, and all the ups and downs of the seventies and eighties. Even if you never felt compelled to buy an AMC car, you have to come away with a profound respect for the survival instinct of this underdog company.

  1. it got some good point but it dose not show a closer lay out on the time mark and on the two oil gear marks at all that the heart of the engine and if it dose not show a good picture of that you will put it back toghter wrong if you got a better picture send it to me so i could see it ok

  2. Somewhat useful manual. Does dissapoint in the fact that on the issues you might really need help on, the book tells you it is too complicated and to take the car to the dealer. But the book does have some useful information.

  3. I've almost worn this book out referring to it while modifying my Galant VR-4, which is essentially an Eclipse GSX in Galant trim with rear-wheel steering. When Haynes refers you to a dealer or other repair shop, it's for a good reason. There are easier and better ways to do some procedures, but for the most part this book is a great reference for anyone with even mild automotive repair experience. If you're doing an engine rebuild, get the Mitsubishi factory service manual since the Haynes book is incorrect in several places. Or get a rebuilt engine and save yourself a lot of time.

  1. I have used this book to replace a thermostat, spark plugs, wires, and a PVC.

It has great directions, (don't expect the pictures to be a lot of help on 90% of the projects you have to do).

My only real complaints about this book are:
    1. They do not always show the Mitsu Eclipse pictures, sometimes it's from the Talon, the 2.4L Eclipse, the 6v eclipse, etc.

    2. They have directions like "remove coil over cables" and there are no directions on how to do this. (It's not rocket science but if you are buying this on how to properly remove and put back together important parts of your car, this can be a little annoying).

Overall, good for the do it yourselfer, otherwise, just bring your car to a mechanic.

  2. Good book to get the wiring diagrams, information, and other needfull things for the eclipse.

  3. oemdsmparts_com says that this book is a must have because maintaining the eclipse engine can be intimidating if you dont have some type of manual to refer to. As you know all cars are different and the mitsubishi eclipse has its share of problems. The book comes in to aid the encountered problems. If you read the book closely the book is self-explanatory, The book does cover 4 types of engines that are found in the eclipses. make sure that you know what engine is in your car and the book will be good.

2 comments about Haynes Chrysler LHS,Concorde,New Yorker-Dodge Intrepid and Eagle Vision 1993-97 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. The Haynes Repair Manual for the 1993-1997 Chrysler LH cars is useful overall, but lacking in some regards. I bought this manual as a complete beginner to the mechanics of automobiles. I only know the primary basics, and only in minimal detail. I thought this book would be a great way to get to know my 1997 Dodge Intrepid in a more intimate way. To an extent, I now can. The manual does lack in a few areas though, mainly in description and illustration. While there is basic instruction for all the repair and maintenance jobs covered, detail is scant. The pictures and illustrations are sometimes marginally helpful, but are usually of poor quality. Sometimes the pictures seem to not even correspond to what the task at hand is.

The manual can also become frustrating when you cannot find a certain repair or other task you'd like to read about. For example, nowhere in this manual can I find information about the reverse light that is located in the center of the rear lights cluster on my Dodge Intrepid. Another instance of frustration occurred for me when I was reading about the wheel and tire sizes for my vehicle. The manual briefly discusses tire size, quote "All vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with metric-sized fiberglass or steel belted radial tires (see illustration)". Upon examining the illustration, where it gives a tire size of P185/80R13, confusion is easily encountered. After talking with other Intrepid owners, and e-mailing Haynes Publishing Group, I was able to determine that the illustrated tire size was just an example and was not intended to indicate the actual tire size of the vehicles covered in the manual. In case you're wondering, the actual stock tire size for the Dodge Intrepid is either P225/60R16 or P205/70R15, depending on the trim (base or ES). The manual doesn't say this though, and I have yet to see where it discusses wheel (rim) size at all.

So if you're planning to buy this manual, I hope I have given you a little insight on how it reads. In my opinion it was worth the money I spent on it, even if I found it a little lacking for someone of my skill level. More pictures and better detail, and maybe some color, would have made this a five star manual for me. As it is, I can give it a solid 3.5.

  2. The Haynes Manual series is a must have for any auto DIYers. Every section is very detailed and very helpful. even if you have no prior knowledge of auto mechanics, you are able to complete basic repairs without the need for "specialized" tools. it takes you through almost any car repair job step-by-step from start to finish.

3 comments about Mitsubishi & Diamond Star Performance TuningHP1496: A Hands-On Guide for Building the Ultimate High-Performance Mitsubishi Eclipse,Eagle Talon or Plymouth Laser, 1990-1999 Models.
  1. The book outlines some basic ideas and principles for doing some aftermarket upgrades to 1G and 2G eclipses. It gives some good tips and some dos and don'ts, but it doesn't really go into detail. This book would be good for someone that really doesn't know anything about performance increases for an eclipse.

  2. I bought this book based on the writeup which states it covers "all makes and models 90-99." The book does a good job covering the models with the turbocharged Mitsubishi 4363 motor, but that's it. It does not cover, at all, any of the earlier non turdo Mitsubishi engines or the later models with the Chrysler 420A engine.

  3. As the author of this book, I wanted to take a moment to respond to "Ed M." about the lack of information about the Dodge-sourced engine in non-turbo 2G DSMs. First, I do mention the 420A, and point out that Hahn Racecraft offers a turbo kit for it. It's a good kit, and if you're interested in turbocharging that particular engine, I highly recommend it. However, that is about the extent of the performance aftermarket for that particular powerplant, and as I explain in the book, for the price of the 420A turbo kit and installation, you could have sold your non-turbo Eclipse and purchased a turbo version which, even stock, offers as much power as the Stage 1 version of the HRC setup. I also wanted to point out a correction in my bio above: I have not been the editor of Honda Tuning for about five years, and wasn't even working for that magazine when the book was published. Repeated requests to change this information have gone unheeded by Amazon. Currently I am Road Test Editor at MyRide.com.

  1. A fantastic book. Great photos and very well written!!! This book is a "must have" for any racing fan. A very informative book. If you like racing, history and "insider" stories and information this is the book for you. Buy it - you will not be sorry!

  2. Dan Gurney is an American original who defied the skeptics: he, Bruce McLaren and Sir Jack Brabham created, raced and won Grand Prix events with their own Formula 1 cars, at the pinnacle of motorsports. Of those three, Gurney was the only American to win an F1 Grand Prix (Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, 1967) in a car he conceived, designed and built--a record unlikely ever to be challenged (Brabham won in France, Holland and Germany in 1966, Monaco and Germany in 1967; McLaren took Belgium in 1968).

This is the basic premise of Gurney's greatness at All American Racers (AAR), captured brilliantly in this new David Bull book, written by John Zimmermann with exquisite attention to detail and carefully quoted history from many participants. It is illustrated lavishly with important historical photos to levels of information that will satisfy the most demanding reader, and published to Bull's typical standards of excellence.

Zimmermann explores not only the Gurney-Eagle F1 car but many of the 157 cars that emerged from AAR's Santa Ana facility (invited guests can see a select few in the small AAR museum): the Indycars (49 victories!) and their derivatives in other formulae, the CanAm McLeagle, the TransAm Barracudas, the Champ cars, the Toyota GTP, GTU and GTO winners and what the author calls unfulfilled ambitions, or `Stillborn Eagles,' an insider's look at efforts that came to nought (often for reasons beyond Gurney's control--rule changes, for example). Bonuses: his unique `Alligator' motorcycle, in 2007 still under intensive development, and the `Gurney Flap.'

Life is struggle; that's normal. Time and money are relentless taskmasters. The odds facing designers, builders and drivers of race cars are beyond long into some new dimension of space-time, at appalling risk. On track, luck is often the key, at even longer odds. As this book explains, Gurney never relied on luck, never paused to consider the odds against success. He invested himself at levels of energy, concentration and commitment that are staggering to read about, supported by designers and master craftsmen whom he motivated with his enthusiasm.

Besides designing and building beautiful, winning race cars, he pioneered, e.g. with Harry Weslake, important advances in valve angles and combustion-chamber configurations, as well as in materials applications such as titanium, carbon fiber and magnesium, and in aerodynamics. He innovated in every category in which he competed, particularly at Indy and especially with Ford V-8 engines (Gurney and Weslake met over a Ford V-8 `stock block' project). The record, summarized in the Appendix, speaks for itself.

Gurney had another obstacle to overcome. Unlike some well known people in the sport, he is saddled with the heavy burden of being a kind, decent, modest and charming individual who has proved that nice guys can finish first. His personal racing memoir, to which his wife Evi is contributing, is in process. Thousands of eager readers can hardly wait to read it.

  3. the descriptions of the various eagles were too brief. a more detailed and personal description of each car would have been better.
