  1. I was impressed with the book and the DVD. As a novice to engine building I was able to follow the DVD and book with relative ease. There were a few areas of the process that are in the book that the DVD did not mention. Overall I think it is a very good tool for the novice like myself.

  2. Excellent book and very well made DVD. I learned quite a bit that I didn't know. I would recommend this book to anybody wanting to learn small block engine repair.

  3. If you are a auto hobbyist / enthusiast planning to rebuild a motor, or just want to know how a motor goes together, this video book is certainly one to have. I have not ventured into a small block myself yet, but this book (along with others) will give me the confidence to start, and presumably will be covered in grease soonafter I begin.

  1. Although I have many Haynes manuals and continue to buy them, I am generally disappointed when I use them. I recently wanted to know about the PCV valve (like where it is and what it looks like. The picture in the book looks like it is from a mid 70's car, not a '99. This is quite common for Haynes. Their books go into great detail on easy things like unbolting an alternater, but are very sparse on more difficult things like transmissions, emissions, ignition, torque specs, capacities, and wiring -- exactly the things I need vehicle specific information on. Haynes manuals pale in comparison to more comprehensive manuals published by Bentley. I have a Bentley manual for my VW, I wonder if there is a similarly conprehensive manual for Chevy trucks. I will look.
P.S. If you know very little about mechanics, a Haynes book is an OK start, but you outgrow them fast and you will be frustrated trying to find simple info such as tire pressure.

  1. I rec'd this item very fast. It will help me maintain my car on my own. Thanks for the speedy service.

  2. I've always been an avid user of the Haynes and Chilton's manuals; I purchased this one at Amazon because none of my local parts stores carried the manual for my car (a 2003 Chevy Malibu).

If you're familiar with the Haynes/Chilton's books, then you will not be disappointed. The terminology is advanced, so if you know nothing about cars and are hoping for a basic-language, easy-read instruction manual, this won't help. However, if you're familiar with cars (which I would hope you are, if you're attempting to repair one yourself), this book is exactly what you need to get the job done.

  3. This book is a typical Haynes manual. If you do repair on your own vehicles, then you have probably used one at some point in time. They do a great job of covering 99% of the repair jobs you might encounter. There is also a part that covers troubleshooting of problems and a small section that explains a little bit about the options. After market products, of course, aren't covered in these nor is this a book for the total novice. It does assume some knowledge about the way a car works and an understanding of basic mechanical procedures. But definitely a must for anyone that wants to do any kind of work on a vehicle on your own. These books are a bargain for the information that they have in them.

  4. The repair manual on the Pontiac Grand Am helped me to repair the car. I could not have done the repair with out the manual.

5 comments about Toyota Corolla and Geo/Chev Prizm Auto Repair Manual 93-02 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. The Haynes Repair Manuals are well worth the money. Keep in mind these are not as detailed as the auto manufacturer's service manuals, but of course you are only paying a fraction of the cost as the manufacturer's service manuals. These manual include most anything a weekend mechanic needs. They include several photos of repair procedures, tune-up specifications, torque specifications and electrical wiring diagrams for your vehicle. There are times the Haynes manuals lack some detail of your vehicle, but overall they are a good buy. I would recommended these manuals for most people. I always buy one for every vehicle I own.

  2. I wanted to know more about my 2000 Corolla. This book gives you mostly clear instructions on how to replace components of your car. I wish I could compare it to Chilton's version of the car.

  3. It would be more useful as a book if it had more pictures showing details.Covering 2 car brands for a 10 year period is one of the prominent drawbacks of this book. However it gives you enough information to get to know your car and its parts and do the periodic check-ups.Worth the money but not enough to be the only source for the home mechanic.

  4. I've got 95 Toyota Corolla. Well, you know, covering 93-02 model years in one book is not enough. 50% of the book is not for my model year, so it's quite confusing and useless.

  5. I bought this just to have a reference in case I wanted to look something up. I hadn't had it two weeks when I ran into a problem that the shop couldn't figure out. After reading the appropriate section I figured out what was wrong and fixed it myself!

  1. david vizard is the best performance auther i have ever read. he only relies on things he has personally proven, and he shows you how he has proven it. he doesn't seem to be as oppinionated as other authors. i would recommend reading any of his books

  2. Vizard delivers exactly what the title is all about. He helps you balance power & longevity against the pocketbook. He also substantiates his claims with his own companies dyno or flow data. Rebuilds range from a minimum of $600@300hp to a maximum of $3000@550hp. Add some nitrous (he talks about this too) and you have a 800hp engine for under $3500 bucks! Be warned, he is blunt and opinionated but backs up his claims.

  3. A very helpful guide with easy to read text and super pictures.
    Thank You
    Jeff Lacy

  4. Bought this book for my 17 year old son. He loves it. A must have for anyone seriously interested in Chevy engines and car restoration.

  5. I Purchased this book 1 year ago and learned more from it in that time than from 5 years of bench racing with buddies. It not only shows the levels of performance and economy attainable by the venerable Chevy V8, but the theories this book teaches can be applied to most other forms of automotive engine building. So much information in such a small book, that is written with such eloquence that even the most amateur of amateuers can grasp, and fully comprehend it's writings. David Vizard, the author, is an accomplished engineer with a background in the aerospace industry, and is also a seasoned automobile racer. This book is a true summary of several of his other books, which go much farther into detail than this one does. From basic cylinder head porting, to rotating assembly prep and carbuerator tuning, this book covers so many bases that it is a must have in any garage.

4 comments about How-to-Restore Your Chevrolet Pickup (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. A Great starting point if you want to see whether or not you're cut out to do a full restoration or a rebuild of an older Chevy pickup. Things I liked about this book: It gives you a pretty thorough picture of what you're in for. Spells out what you'll need (shop tools) and the steps and time you'll need to do a good job. It also provides a list of where you can go for shop manuals and other technical references. Things I didn't like about this book: Black and white photography...

  2. I have had this book for several years and go back to it often to motivate and inform me on the restoration of my '52. They tend to favor the Advance Design series trucks, but there are commonalities for all year trucks. I really found useful the chapters on how to disasemble and clean. The book was full of helpful tips and ideas. Home brew degreaser, metal cleaning and rust memoval/repair tips, etc. The book was fairly well written and easy to understand without being simple or condesending. There are good pictures that help illustrate what you are reading about. I highly reccomend this book.

  3. I bought this book as a gift for my husband to match his purchase of a 1953 1 ton Chevy pickup. Moose as we have named him is in totally original condition (including the paint). My husband has rodded vehicles several times over the years, but we want to keep as much of Moose original as feasible. This book has already been read cover to cover (twice) and several pages have been dog earred. It is especially complete on the era which includes 1953, and that of course is what we are working with. I would have to say later years may be disappointed, but it is still quite good at offering more than one option for "how-to" restore the major components. This is not really a book for hot rodders, but if you want to learn the history or restore this is a good purchase. I'd love to see a more recent edition.

  4. It has good tips for all aspects of the restore/rebuild job. Not the only book you will need though. you will also need a shop manual, because this book doesnt go that in depth.

2 comments about Chevrolet Silverado GMC Sierra: 1999 thru 2006 2WD and 4WD (Haynes Repair Manual).
  1. I bought this manual for two reasons:
First, because the owners manual didn't describe in detail what should be greased as part of the regular maintenance.
Second, at some point I'll have mechanical problems with the truck and I wanted to have this manual on-hand when that happens.

I learned a lot from this manual relating to maintenace an inspection.
What I didn't expect was the tutorial on nut and bolt grades at the beginning of the book. It made for a good read ;)

  2. This is a must have manual for the do-it-yourself who needs assistance making repairs to your vehicle. I did find at least one error where the section number did not correctly list the page number for the problem.

  1. Written from this guys personal experiences. Could use more details/options for the rebuilder and less of his personal gabbing. Otherwise, it's a great book to start with.

  2. If you are rebuilding your chevy motor in stock form, this book is for you. If you plan on modifying your motor to any extent, it is too outdated and its suggestions for machining and assembly do not apply.

  3. I have used this book in my business for about 10 years. It is used both as a reference and a training aid for my customers. It is indispensible and there is no other book in my extensive library to compare with it. I highly recommend it to both the novice and professional.

  4. This book has everything you wanted to know about the Chevy Smallblock. It gets kinda wordy, and very technical for someone who just wants to play around. If you are serious about rebuilding the Chevy Smallblock perfectly then get this book

  5. After years of reading, and turning wrenches I think this is the best so far.
Not only for readability (is this English?) but also specifications.
This book tells you When to pull the engine and Why.
Then tons of specific data will be given and even more important how and
    where to measure!!
If you ever go in this kind of stuff, rebuilding your engine, this book is a good buy.

    BR. Arnoud.

  1. Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual This is possibly the most incredible well written and informative engine performance book ever written. It's not just that I am smitten by the late model Chevrolet Inline Six Cylinder motors. No they are a mere testament to perfection. Ask anyone who has driven a car with these engines and they simply last forever.
But I digress, what Mr. Santucci has done here is assemble and share his most comprehensive insiders knowledge to building these outstanding American engines into true performance overachievers! He also details everyone in America who specializes in building this inline six and gives the novice many tips on durability and general performance.
Outstanding and if I may say "The Bible" of the Chevrolet L6 Engine!!

    Bravo!
    James Kuenzi

  2. Very helpful, lots of combined information from a number of sources
    Well worth the purchase!

  3. This book is hands down the best book I have read about the Chevrolet 6cyl. It gives very in depth explinations of how to achieve excellent power and/or performance out of your 6cyl.

  4. I was looking for a simple rebuild manual for this series of GM I6 motors. Since this is the only thing close that's available, I bought it. I'm only restoring my engine, but if you want to hot rod your motor, this has some great info and tips. Even if you're like me and only interested in restoration, it's better to overshoot when it comes to knowledge.

  5. Where was this when I was 16 with my version of a hopped up Chev 235? Now I want another one! Could use more technical and current resources for "inliners" to chew on. What there is, is invaluable. Found stuff in here I never thought possible. I hope some of the car magazine editors find this and do some current research and publishing. With the current price of fuel, maybe it is a 6's time to reassert itself and find new and practical application.

1 comments about How to Rebuild GM LS-Series Engines (S-A Design).
  1. At this time I'm still going thru this book. I'm a big fan of the LS Series engine so of course I bought into this one. If your already an engine builder theres alot of knowledge brought out in this book that will be pretty standard, but if your new to the LS engines then this is really a decent book. It contains part#'s and various tricks of the trade to make your rebuild more streamlined. I can say that I recommend this book based on the fact that any increase in knowledge is a positive thing.
