5 comments about Complete Official Mgb Model Years 1962-1974: Comprising the Official Driver's Handbook, Workshop Manual, Special Tuning Manual.
  1. However, this book was much more useful than the standard auto repair book I had. You'll need a translator if you don't speak British. Also an interesting bit of history. The book contains all the text of 3 official publications, the owners manual, the factory repair manual, and the "special tuning" manual.

  2. This is the Bible for the MGB owner! And yes, you need to think British to read this manual! But you get the owner's manual, repair info, and the special tuning manual! What is truly amazing is that this book is still available 20+ years after the last MGB was produced! God bless the MGB owner!!!

  3. This book reads like a technical manual.... hey, this IS a technical manual. This manual is a must if you are going to work on your MG by yourself; even if you already have the haynes manual. The only bad part is all of the references to really cool tools that are not longer available. That said, this is not a good book if you are hoping for a nice plot twist at the end.

  4. MGB Automotive Repair Manual: All Models of the MGB Roadster and GT Coupe With 1798 CC (110 cu in Engine) (Haynes Manuals) by John Haynes is still the world-class best.

This book is bigger, heavier, more white space, larger print, better diagrams and illustrations, and for all those reasons, it adds to the library.

The "Driver's Handbook" is 22 pages of really basic stuff, while the special tuning manual appears to be more or less a restatement of the calibration data for the car.

If I could only afford to buy one book, I would not buy this, and would go instead with the Haynes Manual. If money is not an issue, I would buy this book fourth in line, after Haynes, "The MGB Restoration Manual" by Porter which dramatically enhances Haynes on points of restoration, and "Original MGB C-V8 Compl: The Complete Guide to All Roadster and GT Models (Original Series)" by Anders Ditlev Clausager which is a dramatic color photo compilation of what perfect looks like.

  5. This manual is a whole lot better than not having a manual. However, some of the text is a little difficult to understand because of the differences in terminology. "Boot" instead of "trunk" and "bonnet" instead of "hood" is only the beginning. Also found that some things, like a wiring diagram for my '74 MGB, were missing. Disassembly of some key areas is missing too, like the dashboard or "fascia". Still, if you are going to make a choice between this and the Haynes manual, buy this one. As for me, I'm still looking for something better.

  1. This book is one the repair shop will hate and one the outboard owner will like. A very thourough repair manual. Good know-how

  2. I ordered the Seloc Manual for the 1.5 to 40 HP Johnsons thinking it would probably be a nice companion to the "other" manual I already had. I was wrong - - the other one is nothing compared with this one. It gave me the know-how and confidence to go ahead and do major repairs as well as tune-ups etc. that I couldn't have done without it. It's just like having a master outboard repairman looking over my shoulder and giving me little hints and suggestions along the way. Lots of excellent photos, too which are extremely helpful. Totally recommended! I would actually give it 15 stars!

  3. I ordered this book May 12th. When I followed up on June 6th, I was informed the order was automatically cancelled due to a shortage of books. It would have been nice to know this or at least be informed the order is on backlog. No communication.

Ironically, the web site still claims there are "only" 5 copies left (better hurry and order!) Seems I saw that message when I ordered the book 3 week ago

Bad online experience. I was really looking forward to this book.

5 comments about Little Bit Sideways: One Week Inside a Nascar Winston Cup Race Team.
  1. Although I have never been to Charlotte Motor Speedway, after reading this book I felt as if I had.

  2. I lived in the South all my life, always aware of NASCAR, watching races every now and then. Even so, I haven't tuned into to a NASCAR race in probably 25 years. Because of this book, I will when the next season starts.

One can truly begin to understand the mystique of NASCAR after reading A Little Bit Sideways. Scott Huler's obvious love for the material really shines through. His writing transforms what, in lesser hands, could have been a dry and boring recitation of minute details into an interesting and compelling human interest story.

Read it. You won't be disappointed.

  3. If you want to read one book about NASCAR, I recommend this one. Not because it's a hand-holding introduction, but because it's the best. It just does such a great job describing so many aspects of NASCAR. The organizing principle of the book is to examine a week in the life of Kenny Wallace's Square D Racing Team, but along the way, the author looks at NASCAR's personalities, history, technology, tracks, and fans. Huler has a real flair for description, and a genuine but not fawning affection for the sport.

I've also read Shaun Assael's "Wide Open" and Paul Hemphill's "Wheels," which are similar in many ways but to my mind are both inferior. Assael's book seemed flat compared to Huler's, though fans of Dave Marcis and Bobby Hamilton may enjoy the coverage that those drivers receive in "Wide Open." Hemphill's book spent a lot of time on a thesis that I soon found repetitively handled: NASCAR was once the province of the Southern working man but is now corporate entertainment. Both Assael and Hemphill follow NASCAR for a whole season and seem to get bored with it. Huler stays focused on a shorter timespan to much better effect.

I've read some more technical approaches to NASCAR as well, and found that Huler almost always snuck the information in those books into "A Little Bit Sideways."

Although I find this the best introduction to NASCAR because it's so engaging to read and so comprehensive in the bargain, those who are interested in learning more about NASCAR might also try "NASCAR for Dummies" by Mark "Awesome!" Martin and Juliet Macur. That book lacks Huler's style and story-line, but it does have a lot of interesting information about NASCAR, including some tidbits on strategy and technology that I haven't seen elsewhere.

  4. I'd never heard of NASCAR, never wanted to know anything about it. But when I heard a short reading by Huler (the writer) from this book, I had to buy/read it. His writing could be on any topic: ice, dirt, race cars... it's just facinating in an accessable, fun, fast read. I'll read anything he writes now, and gain an appreciation of worlds I never knew. Great read. I just may join the 200,000 on site NASCAR fans next year because of it!

  5. and now I feel like I could drive it. This is the book that lays it all out in a logical order, explains the terms, the rules and the strategies while taking you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Will the car qualify for the race? You can feel the tension because for that week Huler lived it. This isn't a book full of old stories that drivers told a writer - this is an observation, full of detail - it's good old particaptory journalism like Plimpton wrote, talking to (and about) everyone from the owners and spnsors to the fans and the scalpers. What a great book!

  1. I liked the book alot it as cool cars in it.The book as a werid car in it.

  2. Great subject matter of course, but the book is structured so well. It is one of the best level reading books I have experienced. The photos are fabulous and it comes with four trading cards. Great way to motivate reading! We used this book as a reading award. It is best suited for grades late K- early 2, so it's great for independent readers without being too babyish. You will learn something too as you listen along.

2 comments about American Gas Station: History and Folklore of Gas Stations in America.
  1. Do you know when and where the first oil well was found? Did you know that in the early 1900's any shopkeeper with a curb and an idea could have his own commercial gas pump? Do you know what a lubester is? If these answers interest you, as well as the history of the rise of the gas station as we know it, check out The American Gas Station. Michael Witzel takes readers on a hundred fifty year tour of the gas and oil business, from the first gush in Titusville, PA, to the breakup of Standard Oil Company to the advent of self-service stations. Lots of interesting information and great photos - a treat for any automotive enthusiast. - Leila Dunbar, writer, Mobilia.com

  2. We bought this book as a Christmas present for my husband's 85-year-old uncle who used to own a Texaco station in Iowa. We thought he'd like it, but he LOVED it! He started skimming through it immediately, pointing at photos and talking with his grand-nephew all about the old days, old gas prices and pumps, and his own experiences at his station. It was the best present we ever bought him and certainly the best received present this Christmas, 2007.

5 comments about Volkswagen: Fastback, Squareback : Official Service Manual, Type 3, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 (Volkswagen Service Manuals from Robert Bentley, Inc).
  1. So, you bought that squareback you've had your eye on since you were 18? You're going to need more than that "Compleat (sic) Idiot's Guide..." to get the whole thing working the way it should.

Wiring diagrams, Breakaparts, cross-sections and every number you'll ever need to identify, evaluate and fix whatever plagues your type 3. Add the decidedly helpful pictures and you'll be tooling down Highway 1 in your air-cooled wonder in no time.

By the way -- Type 3s are notchbacks, squarebacks, variants -- not "Love Bugs."

  2. I have used other manuals from Bentley, and have found them all to be easy to read and follow.

  3. The book I ordered was delivered on time, just as expected. Whenever I place an order through Amazon.com I rest assured that I'll get it when I want it. As for the book itself, what can I say? It's an Official Volkswagen Service Manual, you can't go wrong when you buy something like this. A must for the enthusiast as well as the pro.

  4. If you buy or have one of these cars The best book to get hands down.
forget the other books, information that is really needed usually to generalized, or incorrect, this is the definative item...

  5. This is a great manual for any level VW repair "expert" ... from the hints of finding hidden bolts, screws and wires to the more complex EFI trouble-shooting ... this book has it all. Considered the repair "bible" by owners and Type 3 wanna-be-owners ... the only thing that would make it better is to go back to the full-color wiring diagram that the earlier editions had in the electrical section. A "must have" for any T3 VW/owner collector.

  1. Car Talk's been on the air for a long time, and they must have plenty of great material for compilations like this. Unfortunately, what went on this edition, while funny enough, just isn't worth the high price. Save your money for blank cassettes and just record the regular show is my advice.

  2. If you have either a car, a Dad or a family, then you will love this show! "Click & Clack" are always great on NPR, and this tape/CD compiles some of their best calls & rants loosely arranged around the themse of cars, Dad's & families. It's wonderful way to spend 90 minutes, especially if you're driving with your family (yes, Dad... you did that too... ;-). Enjoy!

  3. I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

  4. These guys are something else. Yeah I know a lot of it is planned in advance, but it is none-the-less good for a good laugh. They are the only two I can think of who can laugh at their own jokes and have it all come out as real. Really a pleasure to listen to.
