5 comments about Speed Secrets II: More Professional Race Driving Techniques (Speed Secrets).
  1. If you are looking for books on racing driving techniques then at least start with books by Ross Bentley.I bought this book and book 1 and they are books that go together.

This book covers more detail and starts where book 1 left off.Things like computer racing/simulations games are good too.

I highly recommend this book and book 1 for anyone interested in racing.

  2. Another great book in the series. Brings up things one wouldn't necessarily have attended to in the beginning. Good for general driving, too.

  3. In the second book of the Speed Secret Series, it goes in racing learning more in depth than the first book, it starts with preparing the racer to be a Complete Race Driver, it shows what racers should have, such as Racing Skills, Physical Skills, Career Skills, Marketing Skills, Mental Skills and Testing Skills.
Also it talks in depth about car preparing and learning new driving techniques and tricks.

All of Speed Secrets Books are well written and easy to be understood by new racers.

I recommend reading the first Speed Secrets Book, then practice the techniques in test days and real races, after the driver understand the book well, he should get the second book to learn more about racing gradually.

  4. The first few chapters didn't tell you much in the way of coaching you to be better. I think 1/4 into the book, the information is very helpful in isolating and working the different components within a practice session towards driving faster (i.e. work on the entry speed, work on the driving line, work on traction sensing, etc...) I gave it 4 stars, because the book could have deleted the first few chapters.

  5. As the author of "Go Ahead - Take the Wheel" which discusses how to begin racing, the Speed Secrets series is what I recommend to people as the next purchase in their racing libary. This book is written in a very friendly manner and does not get too bogged down in very technical discussions that might be challenging for a novice to racing. When looking at the various racing books I own, these always stand out. I guess that's why this is one of only a very few I recommended in the "Additional Resources" section of my book.

  1. I have to say, I love this series of books. Seeing the concept drawings for the movie is wonderful and how they got there inspiration for what eventually became the charming and funny movie CARS.

  2. Pixar's most recent animation is fully revealed in this wonderful art book. All the research, ideas, and concepts are printed gorgeously in this book. You see how the ideas are captured on paper to guide the production teams to make one of the best animation in years. Conceptual ideas of characters from the beginning to the final rendered CGI model on screen are all there. The landscape is captured in with colorful pastel paintings. Even all the details from neon signs to the Southwest vegetation are drawn out for you to see. Everything in the book is traditional artwork techniques from pastels, blue pencil, to gray scale markers. Only a few pages have any 3D images for you to see, but in an age where everything is computerized... its really nice to see that old fashioned techniques being used.

Its a quality book I highly recommend for the Pixar fan, 3D animation enthusiast, and art students.

  3. I purchased this art of book recently and found it one of the best art of books I now own. The illustrations are very helpful to my concept art assignments. Great reading

  4. If you enjoy learning the behind the scenes process that goes into many of the animated and computer animated films of today, you will love this book.

It shows step by step the drawings and thoughts that went into each character in Radiator Springs and also the creation of all the backdrops. From the smallest signs and orange cones to the racetrack and beyond, you can see how it all evolved.

It's nicely bound with a great jacket cover. Definitely a nice coffee table book your guests will enjoy leafing through or the perfect addition to the library of any art and animation lover.

  5. I was pleased to have this book be in prime condition when it arrived. The price was excellent. The order came in a timely fashion.

The Art of books by Pixar are wonderful. For the artist these books give a great background into how the art brought the story alive.

I highly recommend these books, especially for those who love Pixar.

5 comments about Street TurbochargingHP1488: Design, Fabrication, Installation, and Tuning of High-Performance Street Turbocharger Systems.
  1. This should be the first grade text book for those who want to graduate from Super Street or some other 'tuner' magazine and actually begin learning something.

The author isn't trying to shove any products down your throat... its just well written and informative.

I've been building turbo cars for years, but still learned a few things from reading this book. I now use this book as the place to send people who ask me too many beginner questions over the internet. I say "Read this, and then come back and ask whatever you haven't figured out yet"

It can't recommend which brand of standalone you should buy, but it explains what one is.

  2. Surprisingly, some of readers have found this book useless. Don't believe them. It's the excellent addition to A. Bell's "Forced Induction ..." and much more informative than Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost". Trio "Bell, Bell and Warner" allows you to build by yourself not just operable, but durable and powerful engine which will gladden you on the street. Undoubtedly, this edition is "must have"-grade for everyone in turbo-theme and its price is laughable comparing its knowledge value. Thank you, Mark...

  3. Mr Warner has written a very good, thorough and educational Turbocharging book here.

It is based entirely on facts and is written in a concise, logical order covering all of the topics detailed in the content description. It is also worded very well and moves along at a good pace...you'll enjoy the read.

This is not only a 'this is how a turbo works...this is how to bolt one on.' style book. It far surpasses the C. Bell book detailing turbo theory, ECU fueling and ignition and all of the extra components and theory behind them and how they all affect each other also.

You don't just get 'what' is done, you get 'how' and 'why' as well, taking the blinders off the reader to form their own ideas of how to go about their own turbo system design on any given application.

4/5 Stars only because there are a couple of typos, one where one line of an equation doesn't follow on from the preceding one...

Otherwise, you won't buy a better Turbocharging book at the moment.

  4. I got this book to learn more than just the basic "what is a turbocharger" and was definitely satisfied. I didn't need it but the book pics you up at the very bottom of the learning curve and takes you over basics into the more meaty stuff and all the way into fairly advanced engineering and formulas. All in an easy to understand format and language, that admittedly has its annoying moments from time to time. Anyway, if you drop out at the formula level, no problem, it's there for those who want to calculate their own best setup. Something that can also be accomplished by calling tech support at the manufacturers and turbo specialty shops where you are going to buy your stuff. I also like that it successfully covers both the import crowd as well as domestic V8 without preference for one or the other. The math and theory is all the same and the book ends on build examples on Hondas, Supras, Mustangs etc. Definitely a 4 star book.

  5. You can either learn turbocharging by doing little research and doing it yourself and making expensive mistakes or you can buy this book for $20 and save yourself the time and money and know the information. Turbocharging a modern higher compression engine requires abundant knowledge of turbo systems, or mistakes can really cost you. Excellent book, geared more towards imports, you really feel comfortable turbocharging just about any car after having read it.

5 comments about Mustang Restoration Handbook.
  1. I purchased this book along with two others; Chiltons service manual for early Mustangs and the parts interchange book. As a package they are three volumes one must have if doing a restoration project.

It contains many good tips and recommendations for making restoration more efficient and enjoyable.

  2. This manual is useless for a 6 cyl mustang as far as any engine restoration. It is nearly useless for frame restoration especially and floor work.

  3. This is a great book. Its not about restoring ANY car it IS about how to restore Mustangs.Plenty of photos(all black & white photos)of various Mustangs in varying degress of disassemble. There's enough information throughout each chapter to get the general idea on how to restore a Mustang. For the do it yourself mechanics, etc this book is a suitable guide.

I would suggest a decent workshop manual to go with this book. There are plenty of other Mustang reference books that show restored Mustangs and detailed photos that would help whilst restoring your Mustang.

  4. Found this book added a lot of insight in my grandson's immense project and he has been using this book quite a lot.

  5. This book attempts to walk you through a restoration but fails due to the huge amount of information as would be really necessary to accomplish what needs to be done. I like it because generally, there is enough information to get you started and aware of possible issues you might encounter but not necessarily accurate due to the differences between model years. Regardless, it does touch on many aspects of restoration to give you a starting point for your own research.

5 comments about Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving.
  1. My wife and I just completed our first high performance driver training event sponsored by our local Porsche Club of America chapter. The book was recommended by my driving instructor. It seems to be a very detailed version of the Skip Barber Racing School classroom material. Lots of photos and diagrams that make the concepts easy to understand. Reading the information is like listening to my driving instructor all over again. I've purchased two other books on the subject. One was so technical it was difficult to understand and the other was 98% the author telling how great he was during his racing career. This book is spot on. It is a must have for anyone who is about to attend a driving school or is a spirited driver.

  2. From what I've read so far, it is a great book which covers the aspects of "Going Faster" (whad'ya know?) More theory, rather than dealing with the hands-on-at-the-track-i-need-to-make-sure-the-car-is-running-before-i-go-out, part. Great for people (like the book says) "who want to get into racing or want to appreciate more of what the pro's do when they're spectating from the stands. I haven't read Speed Secrets yet, but from what I read from the reviews, it should be similar.
Compared to Secrets of Solo Racing (which I have read), there's much more useful information for me, because it has more material covering driving rather than covering the entire autocrossing experience (volunteering, clean up, what to take to the track...you can get this from your close autocrossing friends. So focus on driving well with what you have).
All in all, main point is, great book if you want to learn how to drive fast.

  3. If I had one book about driving to recommend this would certainly be it. Skip Barber managed to cover pretty much every aspect of how to drive fast around a track in step-by-step, clear and easy to understand fashion. The book is well ilustrated and well structured.
I personaly haven't taken classes at his school, but I'm pretty shure that all the knowledge he tries to pass and his method are put down in words in this masterpiece. It's the closest from a racing driving class you can get without actually driving around a track with an instructor at your side.

  4. Going Faster is the recognized authority on the subject, and it might never be surpassed. It gets quite technical at times, and bears re-reading as one gains race experience. It is a bit too much for spectators, but for an ambitious racer, this book and seat time can take you to the winner's circle.

  5. I bought this book prior to attending the Skip Barber Racing School, and it was the perfect preparation. The book goes into far more detail than the actual school has time for, so by internalizing it before attending the school, you are well prepared to put the theories into practice.

If the book has any flaw at all, it is that it treats race car driving like something that can be approached completely mathematically. When you're in a real car, instinct, courage, and judgment still count for a lot.

  1. This book was a very in general book, no real insight

into what makes a brotherhood of one percenters tic. more

like a history lesson about motorcycling in general.

  2. This is a great book that explains the history of the 1%ers, and give a great insight on the culture.

  3. I started to read this book then put it down. Having read most books based around and written by noted authors about the 1% lifestyle, and from both sides of the fence (one of the best being "Freedom, Credos from the Road" - Sonny Barger) and goings on within it for the past 60 years maybe I have been 1%ed out as far as books are concerned.

No way, you really do need to read this book and then take a view on how the next 60 years will turn out. if you also read "Freedom" from an outsiders point of view and then taking both books into consideration you should form a view. The ending came as a bit of a shock really, making the reader sit up and take notice of what is around him/her and what may lay ahead in the future. Altogether a great read and well recommended. Thanks Dave and see you on the right side I hope!!

  4. Whether you're a tatted-up hippy killer or a suburban weekend doofus, you will enjoy Dave Nichols' history of life under the one percenter patch.
Dave actually takes us back, way back, to a time before motorcycles even, (is there really such a time?) to find the seeds of Our Thing sprouting all through history. All along there have been guys that found themselves outside normal society and the law, gnarly bros like Huns, Mongols, Vikings, mercenary knights, cowboys, gunslingers and pirates who lived a hard life, lived by their own rules, carved out with sweat, gristle and violence.
Then, of course, you get the whole history of bikerdom from the wild ride of the guys that came back from World War II itching for action--booze and broads--to the truth behind the Hollister "riot" and the explosion of the outlaw biker lifestyle around the globe, with an inside peek inside some of the baddest clubs around, and the lowdown on rules and codes behind their rise to worldwide stature. With all the snitch books currently festering on the shelves out there, it's refreshing to read something that tells it like it really is. The book is illustrated throughout with the outstanding biker lifestyle photography of lensman Kim Peterson of In The Wind magazine. They say reading is good for you. There is so much cool bathroom reading here that your butt will get encrusted with dried dingleberries that your ol' lady will have to remove with a kitchen spatula and a Dremel tool.

  5. One Percenter - The Legend Of The Outlaw Biker
    By Dave Nichols

I have just finished reading the book One Percenter - the Legend of the Outlaw Biker - by Dave Nichols
I will start off by saying it is not what I expected but that is "My Bad" because I did not pay attention to the Legend part of the title.
Having ridden for over 56 years, been the president of a large motorcycle club and even a one percenter for a period of time there is not much I haven't been involved in concerning motorcycles. That is why I can say the following.
The author did a real good job of informing the reader of the history that lead up to the Biker Lifestyle as we know it today.
I DID ENJOY THE BOOK! It is informative and factual.
If you are a long time rider you will enjoy rememberances referred to in the book.
If you are a new motorcyclist or just interested in motorcycling the book is something you should Definitely Read.
The more you know about the lifestyle will help you fit in and enjoy it.

5 comments about The Cobra in the Barn: Great Stories of Automotive Archaeology.
  1. If you love cars, you have to read this book. You'll never look at an old barn or garage the same way again.

  2. Every car nut dreams of the great "barn find," and this book seemed to promise vignettes of some of the best, but disppointed me in a few ways. The quality of the writing covers a spectrum from "what I did on my summer vacation" type ramblings to the professional prose of Road and Track's Peter Egan. I had to read a couple of the stories two or three times to clarify who the people were and what the perspective of the writer was. Some of the chapters lacked photographs, or decent photographs, so the reader is left to imagine what was actually discovered, which would seem like a no-no for a book like this. Some beautiful photos were attached at the end of the book, said to be in some "mystery location" so that really did not connect to the rest of the book. My only other comment would be that if you're expecting this to be all about sports cars, it's not...several of the chapters are about big old touring cars, one-offs, woodies, and limousines. A decent read for car enthusiasts but not great. If I was editing it, I'd chop a lot of the banter and make the stories clear, and make sure there were photos to document each story from "find" to post-restoration if that was the end of the story.

  3. Like "Hemi in a Barn" , well written in bit size chapters that are easy to digest .A book you can pick up and put down easily .

  4. Highly Recommended book - I'm happy to add it to my collection of classic car books as one of the best that I have so far.

  5. This book was enjoyable and really shows what is still hidng out there for anyone to find. My only criticism of the book is that it is a series of articles all by different people written in their own words. Some sections are written better than others, and the writing style changes often. I would have liked a few more pictures, but overall the book does a good job presenting what it was intended to present.

It's worth getting if you are an enthusiast who likes to turn his/her own wrench.

5 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing, 2nd Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to).
  1. This book has been very helpful in all aspects of RVing. You can just turn to any section and it's easy to read.

  2. I am getting ready to purchase my first RV, and was highly disappointed in this book. You can get the info in it within minutes from any reputable RV dealer. This is not a book I will be hanging onto.

  3. Don't waste your time on this book. The author spends way too much time tring to be funny and cute. Very little usefull information at all. Try the RV'ers Bible. A much better book. Well written with lots of good information. Again, Pass On This One!

  4. There was some good basic information in this book, but he could have put it in about one-third the space if he cut out all of his stupid jokes, puns, and other silly references. I'd give it a miss, there HAS to be something better, almost anything would be.

  5. The book is funny, no question. Funny and useful, unlike a lot of the dry material out there that still makes RVing seem like the exclusive domain of retirees and old-timers. Lots of good information, easily scannable if you know it and comprehensive if you don't. A great book for beginners.

  1. At this time I'm still going thru this book. I'm a big fan of the LS Series engine so of course I bought into this one. If your already an engine builder theres alot of knowledge brought out in this book that will be pretty standard, but if your new to the LS engines then this is really a decent book. It contains part#'s and various tricks of the trade to make your rebuild more streamlined. I can say that I recommend this book based on the fact that any increase in knowledge is a positive thing.
