5 comments about Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968-1982 (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in 1968-82 Corvettes. It covers every year in more depth than I imagined possible. Whether you are contemplating the purchase of a 1968-1982 Corvette or are involved with restoring one the information will prove invaluable. It covers part numbers and date codes for virtually every component in the cars and not only tells you what the correct numbers and dates are, but also explains where to find them and what they mean. Also described in great detail are the appearance of factory original parts. The material the part is made of (cast iron, stamped steel, rigid plastic, pot metal, etc.) is revealed, the correct original finish (painted semi-gloss black, plated cadmium dichromate, grey phosphate dipped, etc.) is described, the method by which the part attaches to the car is discussed, differences between the part and later service replacemnt and reproduction parts is described, and just about every other detail is gone into. Even running changes made during the course of each model year are discussed in great depth. The back of the book has several very useful tables and charts that allow for quick reference of part numbers and the like. And very clear, detailed photographs throughout the text do a wonderful job of illustrating the information presented. This is not a coffee table book or a casual read, but rather a tool for anyone who wants to know more about Corvettes. It is extremely well written and illustrated and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in 1968-82 Corvettes.

  2. Who the hell wrote this book? Reading the book just makes you crazy, it is defintely for a NCRS corvette restoration, information on any particular year is sparse and to indepth down to what color and numbers should be on your alternator, etc. Good book if you want to restore your vette like the day it rolled off of the assembly line in St.Louis. If you drive your corvette and don't have unlimited funds to restore it, dont waste your money on this book. This book is for old guys who want to spend 5 years (+) restoring there corvette to absolute stock condition.

  3. This would be a good book if you're buying a vette,to determine it's originality, but a restoration guide it is not.

  4. This is a book of factual and historical information about 68-82
Corvettes. If you are obsessed about knowing every little detail
about what your classic Corvette was like the day it rolled out
of the factory, then this book is for you. This book has all the
details about what color parts were painted, what they were plated
with, what materials they were made out of, etc., etc., etc. This
book has it all. Want to know exactly what the valve caps on the
valve stems looked like? It's in the book!

  5. GREAT HELP EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT RESTORING YOUR VETTE, BUT WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW IT'S BUILT.

5 comments about Dare To Repair Your Car: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Maintenance, Safety, Minor Fix-Its, and Talking Shop.
  1. Great book! We bought it for our daughter who lives 250 miles away. Now she has the ability to figure out what is happening under the hood, if it can be fixed, how it can be fixed and how involved the repair will be. I don't see her putting her head under the hood and doing the reapairs herself anytime soon, but it surely makes her a more informed consumer when she heads for the repair shop.

  2. This is a really good guide, not only is it for girls who dont know what a dipstick is, but its also for men and women alike, who have a basic understanding of the inner workings of their cars and would like a guide book to help them with repairs. Every chapter in the book has a do-it-yourself section where you can learn to replace your fueses or clean your fuel injectors. There is also some preventitive maint tips to keep your car from NEEDING un-needed repairs. The diagrams are pretty dumbed down, which can get a little annoying at times, but its good so even the novice can understand, and its fairly obvious the book was written for women (aside from the Betsy on the cover) because the text has a bit of a girly feel to it. There are a few blurbs here and there with some cute humorous parts to it, which makes this also a fun, enjoyable read.

This is a great book to have around the house for when you need it. My husband is currently in Iraq, and with him being gone Im in charge of repairs of the house, and our two vehicles, and this book has already saved me!

  3. I was just given this book for Christmas, and the first page I randomly flipped to was How to Use a Seatbelt. The second page I flipped to was How to Remove a Bumper Sticker. Not exactly the repair advice I was looking for.

  4. This book supports the cultural assumption that all men know everything about cars. I'll give one example of how shallow it is. I looked up the section about if you're not getting any heat in your car. It states that you may have a problem with heater core, a valve, or the motor itself. It then shows a diagram with no illustration of the valve they're talking about. Left hangin.

  5. I'm finding this book useful, practical, and empowering. Not only do the authors explain how your car works, they describe how to do the work yourself or seek a mechanic's services confidently. The book is easy to read, yet doesn't talk down to the reader.

3 comments about Toyota Tacoma, 4 Runner & T100 Automotive Repair Manual. Models covered: 2WD and 4WD Toyota Tacoma (1995 thru 2000), 4 Runner (1996 thru 2000) and T100 (1993 thru 1998).
  1. It is great book as are all of Haynes manuals. It is informative and very well written. The directions are easy to follow and thought out. Well worth the Money!

  2. This is the second Haynes manual I've purchased for a Toyota, and I highly recommend it. The best feature is that the instructions are clear and easy to follow, which take most of the guesswork out of performing simple repairs and preventative maintenance on your vehicle.

Another important characteristic of these manuals is that they educate you to the point where you can talk intelligently and confidently to a mechanic if necessary. Depending on the nature of the work you need, this can save you a significant amount of money, and this alone will pay for the cost of the book.

  3. Although a bit broad, but you know that by the title, this is a good manual to have on hand for basic maintenance issues, photos, diagrams, descriptions, etc.

  1. I have an 04 F350 with the 6.0 diesel engine and it took over 2 1/2 years for me to find a manual. I like the manual, but I believe that there is not enough information in there. I think there are too many years in the span and that Haynes should have separated gasoline trucks and diesel trucks in two separate books.

2 comments about Slingshot Spectacular: The Front-Engine Dragster Era.
  1. In drag racing's classic era Steve Reyes was considered the sport's greatest action photographer, mesmerizing fans every month with his work in Drag Racing USA magazine. This book has hundreds of front-engined top fuel dragsters, the sport's most iconic class. Fantastic stuff and not to be missed. All the big stars and the lesser-known weekend warriors too. I lived through this era and saw many of these cars. This book is as good as it gets. A+.

  2. In SLINGSHOT SPECTACULAR Steve Reyes once again shares some of his archive of images from what is now called the 'Golden Era' of drag racing. I spent many a weekend standing next to Steve at numerous drag races and it's truly a joy to look at this well produced book. If you're a drag racing fan, this is a must have book.

5 comments about Suite Francaise.
  1. Patience is key with this book. I found the first part, Storm in June, rather boring as it focuses so narrowly on so many different people, many of which are so similarly characterized. Makes you want to say "I get it, move on with the story." The second part, dolche, finally finds a focus on one person--Lucille, and tells the story around her. At this point the book finally gets interesting and makes you feel like reading the first part was worth it. The fact the author didn't get the chance to finish the other 3 parts the story was meant to be composed of is intensely disappointing. The book ends right as its about to reach the climax and the story is about to become a page turner. The plans for the third book in the appendix, are a tease. Its too bad it was never written.

  2. When I started "Suite Francaise," I thought it would take a lot of time and effort to complete. Happily, I was wrong. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. The novel is actually composed of two novellas, "Storm in June" and "Dolce", which Nemirovsky had intended to be the first of a five-part epic.

"Storm in June" was a strong opener and conveyed the proverbial horrors of war for the invaded civilians, but on a personalized level. This story lacked the fully developed emotions and characters of the second story, "Dolce", but it was nonetheless excellent. A number of the characters in "Storm in June" were rather despicable, but I think that actually enhanced the story by adding nuance, as opposed to a simple "pity them for their circumstances" approach.

"Dolce", in turn, was one of the more moving stories I've ever read. The sheer range of emotions Nemirovsky conveys through the characters is nothing less than magical and beautiful. The added poignancy of knowing Nemirovsky's ultimate fate makes the story even more remarkable. Lucile's torment at having to choose between love for her country and her desperate need for the human connection of romantic love nearly brought me to tears.

"Suite Francaise" is deserving of all the praise it has received, and would be even if Nemirovsky's own story had not been so tragic. The way she captures the persistence of the more mundane aspects of life in the middle of such horrible circumstances is unparalled. I especially recommend this book for fans of Daphne du Maurier. "Suite Francaise" will stay with me for a long time.

  3. I'm not quite sure what the hoopla is about with this book. I dragged myself through to the end, just so I could say I finished it, but it was a chore. I do commend the author for her ability to help the reader transcend the mood of the war and what it must have been like for people fleeing the city during chaos and uncertainty. Other than that, I really felt like this book was disjointed and aimless.

  4. Suite Francaise captures the weakness of humanity during WW2 rather than the horrors of war - a unique approach which engenders great admiration for the author. The publication could be improved by placing the preface and appendices at the front - this would add greatly to appreciation of the work.

  5. I recommended this book to my book club after reading about the author and her story (as well as the book's fabulous reviews). Only two of us finished it (and not because they liked it - they wanted to honor the author). Maybe it's the translation, but I'm very sorry to say I found the writing and the characters absolutely horrid. Please note: I stopped at page 70. Maybe it got better from there, but I just couldn't take it anymore.
