1 comments about Speed Secrets 4: Engineering the Driver (Speed Secrets).
  1. So far all the Speed Secrets books have been intended for the driver, but in this book Ross Bentley makes a case for applying the Speed Secrets principles to coaching. This book is written for anyone who wants to help a driver succeed, and like the previous SS books, it's very clearly written and has lots of practical strategies for helping a driver be a faster, more consistent racer. It's good information for a parent or team owner who wants a driver to do better but doesn't know exactly how to go about it.

  1. TERRIBLE!!!Too many mistakes.Mr Hurd don't know the first thing about a correct Chevelle restoration.Too bad its the only Chevelle restoration book available.Stick to assembly manuals and original dealer books for your best source of information. This book don't cut it!!

  2. Having restored a number of Chevrolets to showroom condition, I found Paul's book a sea of misinformation. Pictures with wrong dialog, incorrect and invalid part numbers and hard to decypher copy. Too bad this is the only book available for the Chevelle fan. You can actually get better info from the well-documented Camaro boys and probably be more accurate than what Paul is advising. If you use this book in your resto, take it with a grain of salt and double check your part numbers with the abundance of Chevelle web site info. This book sorely needs re-written... more carefully!!!

  3. This is a very good source for anyone wanting to know the ins and outs of trying to restore a classic muscle car. A very nice to gift for that muscle car enthusist.

  4. This book provided very little quality information. In several cases the information was either missing or incorrect.

  5. Book is written in a blah fashion.A lot of pages but no color photos. If I had to do over,I wouldnt buy this book...Dennis

4 comments about High-Performance Jeep Wrangler TJ Builder's Guide 1997-2006 (Cartech) (Cartech).
  1. If you are looking for any technical info or precise measurements or product testing LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. The book is a good read if you just want someone's opinion regarding what they like; with no dyno or testing to back it up. If you are a beginner or just getting started on your project, this is the place to start, and it provides some good suggestions.

  2. If you are interested in modifying your Jeep TJ for better performance off-road, then this book is for you. This guide takes you step-by-step through the process and gives plenty of options and advice, so that you can customise your own build up. It also explains the principles involved in the modifications from a technical standpoint, but in a very down-to-earth manner. It is well-illustrated with color photos, and there are lots of sidebars with really great information. At the end is a helpful appendix containing sources for parts and services of all types for off-roaders and jeep owners. This is the second SA Design manual I have purchased and they are really great. Even if you don't own a Jeep, I think there is a lot to be gained from these well-written and organised manuals.

  3. This book is quite informative, especially for somebody new to Jeeps and the TJ in particular. There is a lot of good info for building up a TJ into a capable and reliable trail rig. The author is a bit vague on some of the specifics and the repercussions of some of the different "upgrades" he suggests. I do not share his thought on a Dana 60 being the end all-do all axle for a TJ. He often refers to the D60 and suggests buying one from a reputable builder. With built D60's specifically made to fit a TJ running in upwards of $10,000, this might not be exactly what the budget minded TJ owner (read most TJ owners) can afford or would want to use for a replacement axle. Also, the author speaks negatively about the factory D35 and sometimes of the D44's. These axles can be built to withstand all but the hardcore wheeler.

There is a good amount of info about the special editions and what came on each Jeep, as is there about most of the popular upgrades. I would have liked to see more info about installing some of these upgrades. For example, he mentions LED taillights but does not mention that in the TJ's you'll need to modify or replace the relay or the LED turn signals will blink rapidly. This was the factory's way of letting you know a turn signal bulb was burnt out. Another example would be in the mention of using an Onboard Air system. He shows examples of each type, but does not explore that the average TJ owner can build one using junkyard parts for a fraction of the cost.

There is a lot of different ways Christian Lee could have gone with this book and I am a bit disappointed that he basically compiled information from his magazines that I already knew. I guess with his background, I was expecting a TJ do-it-yourself model kit type instruction manual that walked me through making my TJ a reliable offroad machine worthy of an article in his magazine. All in all though, it is a useful and informative book that I have enjoyed going through a couple of times. I can't help but think that with the author's background and access to information, he could have written a true "builders" guide instead of this "information guide".

BTW, I believe in putting my money where my mouth is. So, to back up my criticisms of this book (which I bought, enjoyed, and recommend) I invite fellow TJ owners to check out my rig and the upgrades I've done to it on my club's site at; [...].Hopefully, I can pay forward some of my knowledge in the same way Christian Lee has.

  4. I bought this book as a gift for my son who had just bought a Jeep. He had asked for this book, it is very informative.

5 comments about ZOOM: The Global Race to Fuel the Car of the Future.
  1. Very disappointing. Just a lot of tired old ideas - GM and oil company conspiracy theories. Not worth the money. I did not finish it.

  2. "Zoom: the Global Race to Fuel the Car of the Future" is a pretty good book. It reads much like a history lesson on oil, cars, and energy in general. I found that a bit over much as I was wanting to look more ahead to solutions, rather than rehash the mistakes and things of the past. Also I found some of the information rather sloppy. For example in several places the author makes reference to the EV1, the car GM created and then refused to sell to consumers. They only leased it. Yet on page 287 of "Zoom" the author writes, "...EV1, the sleek, all-electric car that was sold only in California..." How many other of these types of infractions are in the writing? Since I am not an auto engineer, I can only speculate, but it did make me wonder about the rest of the book. Nonetheless, the book does have some good points. And hopefully, there will be a car that gets us all away from oil.

  3. Vijay's "Power to the people" was a pioneering work in highlighting the various issues including geo-political tensions, pollution, and the immediate need to find an alternate substitute for oil (My 5 star rating for this book on [...]). Since then, in direct correlation with and also perhaps in anger against the rise in oil prices, particularly the world's dependence on Middle East oil, several books have been published in the last 5 years. America and the Automobile that were once described as " The Siamese Twins" and Automobiles that was once hailed as "the Industry of Industries" suddenly became the sinner of them all. Emotions and rhetoric apart, facts need to be analyzed with a view to the future. This book scores well on this count.

The fact that the US Automobile companies have almost lost their race to "imports" particularly from Japan is no longer a secret. The path breaking MIT research that led to the excellent tome "The Machine that Changed the World" by Womack et al, gave a surgical 3 D view of the Japanese strengths that Uncle Sam could not emulate till date. Thanks of course for the money well spent on the project.

I do not understand why the authors have to take us back in history to narrate the old story again and again when we have well written books and reports on this topic.

Coming to the point, I expected the book to straight get into the topic (as I had expected from the title) "The Global Race to Fuel the Car of the Future". More than anything else, most of the book is about the past, without concrete conclusions or inferences about the future.

Many of the technologies, names of Companies doing research on Hydrogen Fuel Cells and other concepts are repeated from "Power to the people". In fact I got a little impatient till about two thirds of the book till which I came across nothing original except quotes from many well known publications and books published in the last 5 years.

At his point in time I could reflect on some of the best books that have done original work on the topic of Oil and the US Auto Industry.

    - The End of Detroit by Michelin Maynard
    - The End of Oil by Paul Roberts
    - Twilight in the Desert - Matt Simmons
    - Addicted to Oil - Ian Rutledge (A classic completely missed out in this book. I strongly recommend this book for your intellectual stimulation.)

Throughout the book, I remembered King Hubert, who had rightly forecast that oil will soon reach its peak output, at least on this planet. As I was reading the book, Oil had touched $[...], a new record.

Criticisms apart, the book has its own merits.

    - Excellent read for those who want an overview of the Automobile Industry- Past, present and future.
    - Non technical and easy to comprehend
    - You are alone on a long train journey in a desert, and have nothing else to do.
    - The last few chapters try discussing new technologies and you know nothing about technology.

Amidst this confusion Toyota leads the way in Hybrids. But if we are to apply the core concept of "The Innovators Dilemma" by Prof. Clayton Christen of Harvard Business School, incumbents may not be the winners in launching the car of the future. Keep "Googling" to find out who can give us the solution for a clean and green future!!

Good luck to those who have bought the book.

  4. I expected to see more on the technologies competing to replace gasoline as the power source for cars in this book. it is really more about how the world auto industry reached its current state than the merits of the alternative technologies and forecasting which will prevail. Still, if you read it, you will gain good background for understanding what's in the media stories about the auto industry, particularly why the US big three have been losing out to Toyota and Honda.

  5. Iain Carson and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran's ZOOM: THE GLOBAL RACE TO FUEL THE CAR OF THE FUTURE comes from an engineer and economy magazine editor who together consider the scope of the oil problem - and its likely solution, which lies directly in common transportation choices.

5 comments about 10-Minute Tech, Volume 3: Over 600 All New Time and Money Saving Ideas from Fellow RVers (10 Minute Tech).
  1. To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.

By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.

Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.

The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

  2. This book is great fun and very useful...short, clearly written solutions to everything in your Motorhome from funny smells, drawers that won't stay shut, Microwave turntables that move, noisesetc. The solutions are easy, cheap and really show some very resourceful thinking!

  3. This is an excellant source reference book to aid in solving problems that plague many RV'ers in camp or on the road.

  4. A lot of good information. Used many of the ideas in our 38' five wheel.

  5. Loved it! Totally recommended. And when you are done, DO go an buy the previous two volumes! They are still very useful even with the changes in RV technologies. If only three of the 600 presented ideas come in handy, the price of the book is a bargain. I bought mine here, read it, and returned it to this site, and it sold in two days. It's an easy read, great pictures, easy concepts, wonderful. eMail me if you know of a similar source of clever/useful ideas for RV owners or Full-Timers.

2 comments about How to Custom Paint Your Car (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. I saw the cover car at a GoodGuys Car Show and then saw this book. So I bought it and all I can say is wow. It was amazing to see the process of how the real flames were painted. She takes you through the whole thing, from start to finish. The story of how she came to paint these flames is pretty funny even. The rest of the book is also great. The author JoAnn really goes into detail explaining all the techniques, from traditional flames to graphics. I really liked the wide variety of techniques she goes through in this book. There's a chapter on painting pinup girls that really blew me away. I can now mix up skin tone and paint people after reading that chapter. There are good explanations of the tools used, airbrushes and spray guns. It was very easy to understand and you don't need to be an experienced painter to use this book. I am a beginner and I could follow the lessons in it. But my favorote was the real fire process. The photo on the cover does not really show how incredible this car looks in real life. Some of the photos inside the book show the car more accurately, but the depth of the flame layers is unreal. If you want to paint real flames, check out this book. I do have another of JoAnn's books and thought that one was good, but this one goes over things that the first one does not.

  2. This book answered alot of questions I had when I painted my hot rod. The book is written in a very easy to understand, no nonsense style. It does not waste space on things you don't need. I especially liked the troubleshooting chapter. That came in very handy. One thing that helped is that there are plenty of pictures. There is a photo for every step of each technique. You can really see how it is done. If you are looking to get a tool that will make it easy to do any kind of custom paint work, this is the book for you. It covers flames, tribal graphics, even airbrush artwork. It tells the tools and materials you need for each each kind of artwork. Best $16.00 I ever spent.

  1. Saved me lots of headaches and money!

Great place to start for BMW enthusiasts!

  2. An excellent in depth manual, comprehensive, informative, well explained especially with electrical circuits etc which seems to be my main maintenance concern.

  3. Been waiting for Bentley to release this BMW Service Manual for the E38 Seven Series BMW ever since we purchased our 2001 740iL BMW. It's highly recommended and extremely useful to all E38 BMW owners. 1000 + pages of excellent photos and how too's for the car.
Don't be without it. Be informed and knowledgeable before you discuss any repairs to your car with your Dealer or mechanic.

5 comments about How To Build a Harley-Davidson Torque Monster (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. Bill Rooks's book is a great resource for anyone who works on Harley Davidsons or would like to. As an amature mechanic, I learned a lot from this book. Top end and head work are covered extensively, as well as carburetor selection and tuning. Rook stresses the importance of designing a total package for achieving specific performance goals rather than simply bolting on expensive parts. Rook's careful, simple, yet detailed descriptive writing style makes sense, and will allow anyone with a basic understanding of internal combustion engines to grow in their knowledge and tackle the project or modifying a stock Harley Davidson for performance gains. I highly reccomend this book.

  2. Book appears to have been written with the author fully knowing that he has filled the pages with useless information. Very little useful information. Many large pictures of common things, and large 1/2 page pictures of himself from childhood up and 1/2 page blow ups of spark plugs. How to change oil! What oil he likes! Basic wasted information like that. Will not buy anything from this author or publisher again. This was not a mistake by the author, you can clearly tell that it was intentional by how much wasted garbage is in the book, and how little useful information is in there. I guess he was able to sell it to people like myself.

  3. I bought this book for my husband who has ridden and built Harleys for 30 years....he is very satisfied and happy with the book because it does teach him new things.....

  4. If you like hot rodding your bike or just want to read about it get this book. A very good premmer on how to make you bike fast and street worthy at the same time. How to do it with out wasting money and time in the process. Something for every Harley rider.

  5. I'm an experienced home mechanic and found some things useful in this book but not much. He dwells on old Sportsters with magnetos which these days are nearly extinct and more work than they are worth. He dismisses Evos which is what I have and gives only a passing glance at CV carbs. He also does not give much info on cams and how to pick one. It was published last year but is outdated already. He is an old school wrench and it shows. You could get more info by surfing the Web and joining a chat room or talking to the manufacturers and it's free. Too bad.
