4 comments about Automotive Technology: Principles, Diagnosis, and Service (3rd Edition).
  1. This is one of the best automotive teaching books I have seen. It is up to date with the latest technology and the worksheet material gives a great hands on for learning every system in detail.

  2. I've been a professional aircraft/automotive mechanic for 17 years. I use this book extensively, it has great review material along with alot of updated information on the latest technology in all areas. I used it to re-certify for my ASE ratings. This book will help novice and experienced techs alot.

  3. i ordered the book on September 6th 2003 and recieved the book normal frieght within the next week. I'd definately buy form this seller again. The book was allmost like new, there were a few minor things wrong with it but it was used so nothing you wouldnt expect.

  4. Great Book.....great explanation....great pictures ...covers every asepect of modern vehicle....

3 comments about Ford Mustang: 2005 through 2007 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. For my previous car chrysler neon i got the haynes and the chilton and sometimes it helps one has a better explanation then the other. So this time i took also both books but now the are nearly the same. My advice take the chilton.

  2. A good book for the person concerned about the proper care and maintenance
of the 2005-2007 Ford Mustang. So many repair shops (including Dealerships)have poor quality service. This book provides a valuable
reference even if one does not do the work personally.

  3. This manual is essentially the same book & contents as the Haynes manual. In fact both are owned / published by the same company, and have the same author, M. Subblefield.

This should be conveyed to the public, as there is no reason to buy both.

5 comments about 10-Minute Tech, The Book: More than 600 Practical and Money-Saving Ideas from Fellow RVers.
  1. An awesome book Tells you all you need to know about quick repairs YOU can do. This book will save you thousands of dollars over the "long haul" ( pun intended) Tells ya' how to keep that RV running.

  2. This book had lots of helpful hints although some people definitely have much too much time on their hands to think this stuff up.

  3. To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.

By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.

Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.

The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

  4. Well written ideas and short cuts, and creative ways to solve some problems. Highly recommend for the serious RV'er.

  5. The 10-Minute Tech series books are great. You will find a lot of good ideas and spin off some of your own too after reading same. Ideas for all types of RV's, tow vehicles, etc. Good for anyone with an RV.

5 comments about Car Stereo Cookbook (TAB Electronics Technician Library).
  1. I took a pretty optimistic approach when reading this book, waiting for the meaty stuff to begin...i was still waiting when i got to the index!

It's a pretty good book if you've got a basic understanding of how to wire the stereo components, and what you want to achieve by modifying your stock car audio system. But if you're looking for specific information of how best to use T/S parameters for desigining the optimum enclosure for your new sub - or choosing one that best meets your desired application, then I dont think i'd worry too much about this book. There's some graphs and tables in there that will point you in the right direction in terms of enclosure design/size/style but dont expect much more than that.

In summary, if your the sort of person happy to accept what you're told with out additional inquiry then this book will suffice. Otherwise, you'll need something more basic to provide more definitions, and then once you've got the hang of that, you'll be needing something much more complex to test your new skills. Overall an ok read, but this book will never make it to 'workshop reference' status.

  2. I've started a car audio retail business with my brother. He's the technical guy, and I'm the business guy (working on my MBA now). I thought that learning a lot more about the technical aspect of the business could be nothing but good for me, so I picked up this book (the only book on car audio that Border's carried). The book is organized like this:

    1) Here's an audio problem
    2) Here's a single componant from a single manufacturer that will address the problem.

Instead of telling *you* how to fix or avoid the problem, you get to read whatever the top technology was 4 years ago to address it. As a previous review pointed out, Crutchfield is also a big theme in the book (don't know what speakers fit your car? Go to Crutchfield.com and they'll tell you! God forbid you measure the opening.).

The best advise I got from this book was to hire a guy to create a PHP search database on my company's website to mirror what Crutchfield does, so my customers, too, can search for what specific componants fit their cars. I guess that was helpful.

  3. I ordered this book from one of the Amazon partners and received the 1998 edition of the book.

Let me just say that A LOT has happened on the car audio scene since 1998, like: Video, multi-channel audio, navigation systems, rear-view cameras, DVD Video, iPod, MP3, Dolby Digital 5.1, DVD-Audio, etc.

In other words, the 1998 edition is not even a good doorstop at this point.

Sure, the basics of pulling cables, using the correct connectors and speaker installation is still useable, but to read about the wonderful opportunity of adding a CD changer or replacing a factory tape deck with a CD head unit is a bit out of date.

  4. This book provides excellent background info, good design criteria, and photos illustrating similar installations to those discussed in the different sections. I found the book quite helpful.

  5. I started this book with a mild understanding of car stereo's and installation and by the time I was done I was customizing my own stereo with ease. Highly recommended for anyone with a desire for good sound in there vehicle a lot of easy tricks that make a whole lot of difference

5 comments about Performance Welding Handbook (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. If you wanted to know all about what a wonderful guy the author is and want to see photos of everything he has ever worked on by all means buy this book. If you want good information and clearly written procedures and saftey practices buy another. Here's one example: In a side note unter TIG welding, the author says "Be very careful when welding magneseum, as it can catch fire and not be extinguished by nornal means. Consult Chapter 12 on saftey for more information"

    OK- turn to chapter 12...

and there is no information on what to do with a metal fire.

Before anyone tries welding mag engine blocks or wheels or anything they should know that if the part catches fire spraying a normal ABC fire extinguisher will not put it out, that it burns hot enoutgh to cause steel to catch fire, and that spraying water on it can cause an explosion as the fire can be hot enough to split water into hydrogen and Oxygen. This is not mentioned in the book. There are many more cases of the information you need shunted aside for personal anecdotes of the authors or the pages and pages of poor-quality filler photos that show off everything the author has ever worked on.

    Don't buy it.

  2. Excellent book for those wanting to know the finer details of TIG and the types of work it is suited to. Also gives a good idea of what a really good weld should look like. Excellent photographs and nice layout. Overall, a good reference guide.

  3. I like the Motorbooks Workshop books. They are all well written, have very illustrative color photos, and are well organized. This particular book is a handy supplement to the Welder's Handbook by Finch (same author, and some of the same information). While "Performance Welding" covers some more detail about the function and technique of many welding methods, the "Welder's Handbook" has a few projects thrown in with plans.

From this particular book I've learned a few tricks about jigging, and discovered a few things I didn't know. I made a few things out of sheet metal from duct work that one might find at the home hardware super duper mart. I tacked together a box made of this stuff which is all galvanized. A few days later I'm flipping through the book and learned that welding galvanized metal is bad - the ionized zinc forms a fume cloud of little nanoparticles that one shouldn't breathe. Extended contact leads to poisoning. Whoops. But I also learned that with proper ventillation, it's okay to weld galvanized metals but I should definitely be more careful.

One thing I've learned a lot about, which I only vaguely knew until now, is what to look for in a TIG welder. I learned with MIG and continue to use MIG, but the control of a TIG welder would help dramatically. The extensive discussion of TIG, including TIG methods for stainless, aluminum, and magnesium, is very helpful.

Also, I am now more interested in the other techniques that I passed by on my learning curve. For one, gas welding seems to have benefits that I overlooked. And I've also learned that much of the work I do could easily be accomplished by good ol' arc welding with better affordability.

If you are a beginning to intermediate welder, you will probably find this book useful.

  4. It's decent advice but it's very much an overview not a step by step how-to, it's worth reading as what it is but it will not teach you to weld, no book can do that.

Let me sum this book up for you: Make sure your pieces fit together tightly, make sure they are super clean, shop local if you can, buy brand names, go to tent sales, buy high end equipment if you can or used if you can't afford new, TIG welding is the best option, get a TIG welder that supports square wave and lots of adjustability made by a major brand name, practice on scrap, and ask lots of questions at your local welding supply dealer.

There are lots of pictures of good aircraft welds but not a whole lot of detail on doing them, very few diagrams or charts but lots of pictures of tubes welded together by different methods.

The book assumes you already know how to weld at times and assumes you don't at others. I think the author knows full well what the book is and what he wrote and would agree it can't teach you to weld, you actually have to get a welder and some scrap metal and just try it.

Let me make the author's main point again, if you're not doing high volume production welding you should probably use a TIG welder.

  5. Even though the book on Performance Welding was very informative, it was not entirely accurate. Since he spent a lot of time telling us how most welding books are based on old information, he should have been more careful to be completely accurate. He tells us that Chromoly (4130)tubing cannot be bronze brazed. However bronze brazing has been successfully used in the bicycle industry for more than 50 years. You simply have to build a fillet at the joint. Bronze is about 1/6th as strong as the steel, so you need a fillet of bronze about 6 times the thicknes of the steel to get the same strength. The reason most welders don't know this is because MIG and TIG welding are faster and more commonly used for this type of welding.

5 comments about Honda Accord, 1990-1993 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. I find Hayes manuals to be a bit better than the similar Chilton's manuals due to their extra detail, and tips. They also can be $5 cheaper for some models. This version is great because it lists only 3 model years, thus leaving out some of the clutter of having up to 8 different model years included. You can still do much better by getting the actual factory service book, which is written just for your car, and in MUCH greater detail. Most do-it-yourself home mechanics will be fine with a Hayes manual, however.

  2. I bought the Haynes Honda Accord 90 - 93 repair manual and I consider it a waste of ($$$) It is written with very little attention to detail and was very confusing. For someone who already knows the ins and outs maybe it is great but for me it is a waste of time. I would not recomend it to anyone. I have not read the other brands so I cannot compare them.

  3. UPDATE: The more I repair/fixup my 90 Accord, the more useless this book has become. I have found ever MORE mistakes within the pages of this book. This is good to have around for quick reference, but if you want something with detail and spot on accuracy, get the 1984-1995 Accord/Prelude Chilton manual instead, it's what I've been using for the past two years.

This book is great for general knowledge, but if your like me I like to know my car in and out. This book doesn't have many details and I've found several mistakes in it. For once I would recommend the 1984-1995 Accord/Perlude Chilton repair manual. It might seem like they are covering a large area (12 years of Accords and Preludes), but they go into great detail for each model and year.

  4. I like this book very much. It is very easy to read and use for troubleshooting and replacing parts to your car. There are some things is lacks. Some issues are just not existant in the book and I have to look further. I understood this when I bought the book. (what do you expect for a small book for so cheap?) If you were looking for a full car repair manual for your car. You will need to buy a Helms or similar for about the price of four of this book. Even at that, I would reccomend this book as a companion.

  5. I will never purchase from this seller again.I have received no manual, no money back or communication after three months.

5 comments about 101 Projects for Your Corvette 1984-1996.
  1. When I got my C4 I read all the Vette mags and ads that told me "just add this miracle part and it will increase your horsepower by 200%".

This book tells you what works and what does not. It also tells you if you add this, you also need to change this.

The book does not just tell you about hop-up projects. Most of the book tells you about the everyday things that you need to know if you are not rich. It tells you how to change light bulbs, suspension, interior, etc.

This is a book you will use a lot as your car gets older. It will also save you a lot of money on hop-up projects because he will tell you which ones are marginal and those that work.

    Good Motoring

  2. This is a good supplementary book to a Chilton's, Haynes, or Helm if you are a novice mechanic. It breaks simpler projects down in really simple terms and pictures for a first time mechanic or even a first time corvette owner. I think most of the information contained can be found on the internet or on forums, but the nice part is having it at your finger tips. It references instructions for quite a few jobs quite well...but for the complicated jobs it pretty much just tells you to take the car to your mechanic(steering wheel mounted blinker/highbeam failure) Overall this is a good supplementary book to owning a C4 Corvette and well worth the money. It's a great fingertip reference and a good general maintenance reference too. It tells you about the cheaper performance modifications and what REALLY works and what doesn't and what is appropriate for the associate expense. If you have a C4 and are new to Corvette ownership I'd say this is a must buy.

  3. the best book I have found for the backyard do it yourself type corvette owner, very helpfull.

  4. The projects listed in this book could be found in any service manual. And a true service manual would have done a better, more professional job describing the required step to complete the task. I expected 101 unique projects not a book of normal routine maintanence items

  5. Book has many great ideas, but is lacking specific details. For instance: you can replace your weather stripping however there are no details as to how to do it.

  1. I started out with the New York state CDL test prep book that you get free from DMV. It seemed a little stodgy with older illustrations. I ordered this book thinking it would be much clearer, better illustrations, and more up-to-date. I was wrong. This book is WAY too much fluff, full of info you don't need to know, overmentions law numbers as if that's important, and is basically a big disappointment. Please, Barron's EDIT this training manual...it's full of inconsistencies and poor writing. I have wasted ~10 precious hours trying to get through this. Now I'm back on the NY manual and, boy is it ever straight-forward. I will probably use the Barron's book for the practice tests, but I'm sorry I ordered it originally and then wasted study time trying to get through it.

  2. I have had my CDL for 5 years. If you don't drive for a while, you need refresher training. This book worked great and from what I remember of my original training, this book would have been great for familiarizing beginner's to the entire CDL process. The pre/post tests per chapter help know where your weaknesses are. A lot of the questions were on my original CDL test, so it is up to date. Great job Barron's!

  3. Answers all your questions. I would like to see an updated version. DaveC

  4. It is a good source of information to use as a reference or addition to for example interactive software tests such as the CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL by AplusB Software Corporation, visualised software application that helps keep you focused on the information.
