  1. I can't count the number of times I've read and re-read this book. Pretty sentimental by today's standards, but the basic story tells of a country man of character who falls deeply in love with a city girl who has issues. That description doesn't do justice to Gene Stratton-Porter's touching romance, but if I had to pare my library down to just 20 books, this one would be in the "keepers."

  2. I first read this book 37 years ago. It was the original book published in 1911 and belonged to my 1st husbands grandmother. It was written of a quieter time, the slower paced, clean living and was very inspirational. I loved all the information about the nature and plants. I started out trying to recreate the "Yellow Garden" several years ago. I now have a gorgeous garden with many of the same perennials and herbs listed in the book. The garden has certainly evolved from just yellow to every color in nature. I have passed down the love of gardening to my daughters by sharing the flowers and herbs from my own garden. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book.

  3. I loved this book, although it definitely did not compare to The Girl of the Limberlost which is my all-time favorite.

  4. Gene Stratton-Porter is an excellent author. His books hold your interest and take you to a time where stress is far less an issue. His characters are fully developed and richly represented. An excellen book for peaceful reading.

  5. There is no story it's equal. When I think of a man truly loving a woman, this book comes to mind. It's the most deeply intimate telling of one man's heart, mind and soul. Is it possible love like this is possible by a man or a woman for the other? The story is to be nestled and protected for its lofty ideology. I view the Harvesters love for the woman as many saintly priests and nuns have loved God...deeply beyond what most of us can grasps with our worldliness. I might buy this book for my teenage nieces--they should read this story. Why? I wonder if they could, in their wildest fantasies, imagine a young man loving them similarily. Perhaps they may be more choosy in whom they date.

5 comments about BMW '02 Restoration Guide (Restoration Guides).
  1. "this is the book that most people buy when looking at 2002s for the first time or need a refresher"

They offered to get me one but didn't rate it, but I guess it's got to be at least a 3-4 stars.

  2. The book helped me imediately with heater wiring configuration. I would like to see complete wiring diagrams aas my restoration requires electrical as well as structural effort. The chilton repair guide has very incomplete wiring diagrams on the '02.

  3. This is a great book for both the first time '02 owner and the the long time '02 owner! This book is very clear and thorough and gives great tips on how to restore your beloved '02. Some time times this book is not technical enough though and if you are looking for a book with engine breakdowns and wiring diagrams you should get the BMW 1602 and 2002, 1959-77 (Haynes Manuals). I recommend buying both these books to get the best of both worlds!

  4. Generally well-written and helpful. However, I found the chapter on body restoration to be somewhat lacking in illustrations/diagrams/photos. I'm an experienced welder/body repairman, but, have no BMW '02 experience. I had hoped to get a better idea of what I'd be getting into, time-wise, to help in planning a restoration. Having some illustrations/drawings/diagrams showing how the rusty panels came together, when new, would have been helpful.

  5. For all your do it yourself-ers out there... the BMW 2002 fix it book is pretty good. Gave the text away with the 1971 BMW 2002tii I sold as a bonus.

2 comments about Dodge Pick-ups: 2002 thru 2005 - Full-size models 2WD & 4WD - V6 V8 and V10 gasoline engines & Cummins turbo-diesel engines (Haynes Repair Manual).
  1. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500, 4.7 V8. So I fall under this catagory for this repair manual. First off, I prefer Haynes over Chilton, but then again, that's just my personal opinion. If you are someone who likes to tinker with things on your Dodge (like me) then this book is definately for you. When reading, sometimes it seems like that the guys who wrote this book were not clear on what they were doing, but after reading a few times and refering to the pictures (which are in black and white) I could get the job done.

Although this manual covers all engine types, at times the pictures might be a little different because: they can't take 5 different pictures with different vehicles. So they tend to use a general picture that best represents the repair being done. Like said before, this happens a few times in the whole book. No need to worry.

This manual covers a lot of things; if it's a big 2 day job, to even a small 15 minute job. Overall, I am very glad I got this manual. At times it can be confusing, but with a little patience and tolerance, you can do it too. This is a must for the 2002-2005 Dodge Ram owners. Always use safe repair techniques and have fun!!

  2. In my "tinkering" days I used to buy Chilton's for light maintenance documentation and Haynes for deep mayor jobs. I have to say that the Haynes books that I used to have were the ones sold in the UK, and they were awesome. True to form and tradition, when I got my new "toy" truck (hey, midlife crisis takes many forms!) I wanted to be able to "tinker" with it (in for a penny, in for a pound!) as in my younger years so I bought the Chilton's and this. To my surprise they are both the same. I don't mean they are alike, I mean they are the same book, verbatim!. Not what Haynes used to be, the quality of the phisical book and the quality of the information inside is not what I was expecting. If you want something that will help you with the maintenance of the car, buy either one, but by all means don't buy both. Probably you should buy Chilton because they are still consistent with the kind of book they have always been.

  1. Great book excellent read over the christmas period i really loved it. The paper was thin i must admit but so what I think car guy is a whiner, Its not exactly the authors thought that the paper is thin. I loved the experiments. Did you know the guy who wrote this was only 17 when he finished it, he is a young genius. I recommened this book to any of the budding scientists amoung you.

    SDD

  2. I got this book as a christmas present and the first thing i thought was this is exactly what i need. my life long search for a book that covers all of the subjects which i have wanted to know about since the day i was born. i would have been satisfied if this was the only present i got but none compared to this book. i would gladly trade in my ipod for this book if thats what it had to take to get one. This book deserves to be nominated for the times book of the year!! but dont just take my word for it go and buy it now and i promise you wont regret it

  3. i was very sceptical when i first picked up this book but after the first few pages i was drawb into the sheer brilliance of it the projects in it ranged from both the simple to the more in depth and i recommended it highly to every1

  4. The other two star review was the most truthfull about this book. Most of the projects don't give you a step by step for completing the project. Most of the projects just tell you too buy a kit and follow the directions. It gives the electrical skematics but if you have no electrical experience this does you no good. The only thing good it does is give you ideas on what to install on your car.

  5. I was really displeased with this book, and I am familiar with the general format of the "Evil Genius" series since I own quite a few of them. In this particular book of the series, there is little insight dispensed, and mainly you are being given just a list of components you'll need and a vague idea of the kind of work you need to undertake to get your systems working. Most of the instruction comes from the kits specified, and you could have done that without the book! If you are really interested in automotive electronics more from the viewpoint of wondering how does it work and how does it all fit together to control the automobile, then let me suggest "Understanding Automotive Electronics", currently in its sixth edition, by William Ribbens. This book is more than a automotive technician manual, but it is not so intense that you need to have more than a college sophomore's level of understanding electronics either. Read that book, then come back to this book for project ideas, but not much more. Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here:
    Chapter 1: Instrumentation
    Chapter 2: Comfort Features
    Chapter 3: Intelligent Functions
    Chapter 4: Security and Safety
Chapter 5: A Computer in Your Car
    Chapter 6: Power Supplies
    Chapter 7: Display Technologies
    Chapter 8: Input Devices
    Chapter 9: In-Car Audio
    Chapter 10: Storage Devices
    Chapter 11: Speech Recognition
    Chapter 12: GPS
    Chapter 13: Onboard Diagnostics
    Chapter 14: Wireless Connections
    Chapter 15: Car PC Software

5 comments about Honda Accord, 1990-1993 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. I find Hayes manuals to be a bit better than the similar Chilton's manuals due to their extra detail, and tips. They also can be $5 cheaper for some models. This version is great because it lists only 3 model years, thus leaving out some of the clutter of having up to 8 different model years included. You can still do much better by getting the actual factory service book, which is written just for your car, and in MUCH greater detail. Most do-it-yourself home mechanics will be fine with a Hayes manual, however.

  2. I bought the Haynes Honda Accord 90 - 93 repair manual and I consider it a waste of ($$$) It is written with very little attention to detail and was very confusing. For someone who already knows the ins and outs maybe it is great but for me it is a waste of time. I would not recomend it to anyone. I have not read the other brands so I cannot compare them.

  3. UPDATE: The more I repair/fixup my 90 Accord, the more useless this book has become. I have found ever MORE mistakes within the pages of this book. This is good to have around for quick reference, but if you want something with detail and spot on accuracy, get the 1984-1995 Accord/Prelude Chilton manual instead, it's what I've been using for the past two years.

This book is great for general knowledge, but if your like me I like to know my car in and out. This book doesn't have many details and I've found several mistakes in it. For once I would recommend the 1984-1995 Accord/Perlude Chilton repair manual. It might seem like they are covering a large area (12 years of Accords and Preludes), but they go into great detail for each model and year.

  4. I like this book very much. It is very easy to read and use for troubleshooting and replacing parts to your car. There are some things is lacks. Some issues are just not existant in the book and I have to look further. I understood this when I bought the book. (what do you expect for a small book for so cheap?) If you were looking for a full car repair manual for your car. You will need to buy a Helms or similar for about the price of four of this book. Even at that, I would reccomend this book as a companion.

  5. I will never purchase from this seller again.I have received no manual, no money back or communication after three months.

  1. this book is full of information for the chevy lover it has alot of info. It helped me find out what my 3 chevy small blocks were.

  2. Very good book, a lot of very valuable information on SB and BB chevy motors. Saves you time and money running to the parts store to run the casting numbers. If your a chevy lover or in to building SB and BB Chevy motors I definately recommend this book.

  3. Lots of info and casting #'s with dates.
Nice to have 85% of info all in 1 easy to find book.

  4. One of the best reference books you'll ever use either sitting at the computer or wandering a swap meet. No more guessing about a part that a vender tells you "Yes, this part is the one for you" only to get it home and find it's wrong. Easy to read and quick to find a number. You'll end up needing another one as I did from over use.

5 comments about Corvette Restoration Guide, 1968-1982 (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in 1968-82 Corvettes. It covers every year in more depth than I imagined possible. Whether you are contemplating the purchase of a 1968-1982 Corvette or are involved with restoring one the information will prove invaluable. It covers part numbers and date codes for virtually every component in the cars and not only tells you what the correct numbers and dates are, but also explains where to find them and what they mean. Also described in great detail are the appearance of factory original parts. The material the part is made of (cast iron, stamped steel, rigid plastic, pot metal, etc.) is revealed, the correct original finish (painted semi-gloss black, plated cadmium dichromate, grey phosphate dipped, etc.) is described, the method by which the part attaches to the car is discussed, differences between the part and later service replacemnt and reproduction parts is described, and just about every other detail is gone into. Even running changes made during the course of each model year are discussed in great depth. The back of the book has several very useful tables and charts that allow for quick reference of part numbers and the like. And very clear, detailed photographs throughout the text do a wonderful job of illustrating the information presented. This is not a coffee table book or a casual read, but rather a tool for anyone who wants to know more about Corvettes. It is extremely well written and illustrated and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in 1968-82 Corvettes.

  2. Who the hell wrote this book? Reading the book just makes you crazy, it is defintely for a NCRS corvette restoration, information on any particular year is sparse and to indepth down to what color and numbers should be on your alternator, etc. Good book if you want to restore your vette like the day it rolled off of the assembly line in St.Louis. If you drive your corvette and don't have unlimited funds to restore it, dont waste your money on this book. This book is for old guys who want to spend 5 years (+) restoring there corvette to absolute stock condition.

  3. This would be a good book if you're buying a vette,to determine it's originality, but a restoration guide it is not.

  4. This is a book of factual and historical information about 68-82
Corvettes. If you are obsessed about knowing every little detail
about what your classic Corvette was like the day it rolled out
of the factory, then this book is for you. This book has all the
details about what color parts were painted, what they were plated
with, what materials they were made out of, etc., etc., etc. This
book has it all. Want to know exactly what the valve caps on the
valve stems looked like? It's in the book!

  5. GREAT HELP EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT RESTORING YOUR VETTE, BUT WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW IT'S BUILT.

5 comments about GM's Motorama: The Glamorous Show Cars of a Cultural Phenomenon.
  1. This book is an important, stylish look at a halcyon time in U.S. automotive history, when dreams became real and art and style were as significant as horsepower and torque. If you're an afficianado of the big cruisers Detroit cranked out in the late fifties and early sixties, this book shows you the wildest styles possible from the designers and how they were translated into what you drove into your driveway. It's a well put together compilation, and the book itself is heavy and durable. Any car collector or petroliana devotee will love it!

  2. Very nice book loads of pix and info. Bought as gift. Guys who are into old GMC iron will be ingrossed for hours!

  3. Great book, well done. It answered some questions i had.
    Great job. Transaction was great.
    Larry Sherrill

  4. Cool Book, Beautiful pictures. Lots Of Cars I have not seen before, Some I have. Worth The Price.

  5. An easy book to read, with interesting information about each car. I was also curious to find out what happened to the cars. Dream cars were very popular in the 50's and 60's and this book covers GM's contributions well.

5 comments about How to Restore and Modify Your Corvette, 1968-1982 (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. This book offers a unique perspective on Corvette restoration. The author restores a 68 Corvette and summarizes the process throughout the book. The car is kept looking stock, but has been fitted with some high-performance modifications such as a high-torque motor and racing-style suspension components. This book gives the reader an alternative view that differs from the factory original restoration.

One major flaw to his plan is the lack of a track test data section like those found in some automotive magazines. Do all of these modifications really result in a Corvette that is faster and handles better than a factory original? That question is never truly answered. This book is actually a compilation of how-to articles that first appeared in Corvette Fever magazine in the 90s. Thus, it is saturated with product plugs for everything from car parts to spray paint.

Another problem that shouldn't go without mention is some bad advice given by the author. For example, he takes a 30 yr. old fuel tank, dumps a can of sealer into it, and puts it back into the car. When you consider the overall cost of a project like this, a new fuel tank is a drop in the bucket. He also tells the reader to use a brass punch and a hammer to install the fuel sending unit. Don't try this. They make a special tool for this purpose. You wouldn't want your prize restoration turning into a prize inferno. Overall, this book contains some good information that you don't find in other restoration books, but it could use a newly revised edition.

  2. As an enthusiast of Corvette's this book impressed me.A good size book with plenty of advice, photos in an easy to understand format makes this book worthwhile.
"MBI" books are known for their high standards and this book maintains it.
If you're interested in these model Corvette's,an owner you will find this book helpful. The size of this book is a bonus and great value.
I also recommend these books too:
    1)"Corvette C3:Buyer's Guide 1968-1982".
2)"Corvette 1968-1982"(sports car colour history series).

  3. As an owner of a 1981 Corvette looking to learn more about his Shark, and the restoration process in general, I found this book to be an outstanding addition to my Corvette library.

This is not exactly a how to book, but is more of a tip and information filled guide that follows Richard Newton through the phases of rebuilding his 1968 Corvette. For example, it will not tell you how to rebuild your small block, but it will give you tips on the rebuild process, and recommendations for enhancing performance.

This book is great for those who want to learn more about how their Shark is put together, and for those that are contemplating a restoration project.

For the hands on owner I would recommend in addition to this book: the GM Corvette Assembly Manual & Service Manual for your year and the Corvette Restoration Guide by Richard Prince.

  4. If you are new to Corvettes and restoring them, beware that the author probably has little better knowledge than you do on the subject other than going through one project himself, which hardly makes anyone an expert.

If you are not new to them, you don't need this book.

The book is filled with: dubious, almost flippant advice "..the softest possible (suspension) spring should be the best"; blatant omissions (discusses the merits of numbers-matching 'vettes but doesn't even mention the multitude of fraudulently stamped motors in the market; and incorrect statements "As horsepower and rpms increase, torque decreases."

The book does have good pictures and diagrams, just be careful reading it.

  5. This is a well written introduction to a happy ownership of your new vintage C3 Corvette. Read it before you start planning to buy a C3 or start a long lasting and costly prosject. Most people will pick up some valueable tips inside the book.
