2 comments about Ford Model T: The Car That Put the World on Wheels.
  1. Nicely done. Good research. Good historic photos. There is another book that just came out called The Legendary Model T Ford. I wouldn't spend the money on that book, you see, it is the 100th anniversary of the Model T.

  2. This year makes the 100th anniversary of the Model "T" Ford, and consequently a lot of books about Henry's Flivver are appearing in the market place. This one is a good attempt, and there are many historical photos and newer color ones as well, but honestly the book "The Legendary Model T" by Tom Collins - despite also having some small errors - is a much better effort in my opinion, with more photos and accessed archives from The Henry Ford in Dearborn.

3 comments about Corvette, 1966-1982: Shop Manual (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. The "Corvette, 1966-82 : Shop Manual" is certainly not as detailed as the GM manual but it contains all the layperson needs to do the basic maintenance on all moving parts. Highly recommended to have it in the trunk for diagnosis and reference on the run.

  2. This manual is almost 3/4" thick, so it can't have a great amount of detail in it for the entire C3 Corvette line. For the price, it is a good deal.

  3. Quite good book. Useful list of problems / solutions. For 82 models could be more detailed especially on CFInjection system. Also range of years could be narrowed down and could use some more pictures and better print quality / paper

5 comments about BMW '02 Restoration Guide (Restoration Guides).
  1. "this is the book that most people buy when looking at 2002s for the first time or need a refresher"

They offered to get me one but didn't rate it, but I guess it's got to be at least a 3-4 stars.

  2. The book helped me imediately with heater wiring configuration. I would like to see complete wiring diagrams aas my restoration requires electrical as well as structural effort. The chilton repair guide has very incomplete wiring diagrams on the '02.

  3. This is a great book for both the first time '02 owner and the the long time '02 owner! This book is very clear and thorough and gives great tips on how to restore your beloved '02. Some time times this book is not technical enough though and if you are looking for a book with engine breakdowns and wiring diagrams you should get the BMW 1602 and 2002, 1959-77 (Haynes Manuals). I recommend buying both these books to get the best of both worlds!

  4. Generally well-written and helpful. However, I found the chapter on body restoration to be somewhat lacking in illustrations/diagrams/photos. I'm an experienced welder/body repairman, but, have no BMW '02 experience. I had hoped to get a better idea of what I'd be getting into, time-wise, to help in planning a restoration. Having some illustrations/drawings/diagrams showing how the rusty panels came together, when new, would have been helpful.

  5. For all your do it yourself-ers out there... the BMW 2002 fix it book is pretty good. Gave the text away with the 1971 BMW 2002tii I sold as a bonus.

5 comments about Mercury Outboards, 3-4 Cylinders, 1965-1989 (Seloc Marine Tune-Up and Repair Manuals).
  1. Overall not a bad book, found it to be very general in a few key area; this would be due to such a large range of models covered. Next time I may look at the OEM manual; for a comparission.

  2. I found the text to be very unclear for inexperienved mechanics. The instructions say things like "remove the middle and outer cowlings" without explaining what the cowlings are. The picture associated with the instruction step then just shows a picture of the motor without identifying the part in question.

There is some good information about how a 2-stroke motor works and basic concepts behind prop selection.

  3. This has tons of great information about the repair and maintenance, though the pictures are dated and not all close enough to see the details of what is being illustrated. I would recommend this for the weekend hobby person to skilled mechanic to assist in any work on this model of outboard.

  4. This seller shipped my item immediately!! I was very pleased with the fast shipping and the item I purchased.

  5. This book was exactly what I thought it was and was just what I needed to troubleshoot my 84 merc.

5 comments about Porsche 993 Essential Companion.
  1. Overall, a good addition to the literature. Not so detailed that it stands ALONE as a repair resource, but with Pelican, Excellence, Panorama and the various web sites offering 993 information, adds more complete information for the do-it yourself mechanic. Of my reference books, this is perhaps the most comprehensive, specifically for the 993 (other than the factory manuals). An easy read, usually clearly written, yet at times too abbreviated. (Cabrio top repair, for example) First 100 pages deal with "styles" of 993 offered. Contains torque specs. Some info is nothing more than "owners manual" info. Nontheless, I am happy to have added this volume to my library!

  2. This is the 993 bible; if you have any interest in the 993 you must own this book.

  3. A very thorough and well versed volume on the last of the air-cooled engines. If one ever wanted to find out any kind of information on this classic car, then look no further. A fairly balanced book, this read should prove it's value to those new to the marque, or are looking for a more detailed answer to any questions they might have.

  4. This book was a pleasant suprize. The black and white photos are pretty good. I would recommend this book for any 993 owner.

  5. The bible for 993 owners. The detail and organization of all the information is incredible. Worth every penny. You can't go wrong buying this book. I cannot imagine the years of research required to pull this book together. Thanks

  1. This manual is ok for minor repairs but lacks good detail information on anything major. Trying to locate components is frustrating due to the lack of good photos or illustrations. Manual is a near carbon copy of the Chilton's book - don't waste your money on both.

  2. I always buy both the Chilton and Haynes repair manuals to get two different perspectives. I bought both this time, and was surprised when the content was exactly the same. Same Table of Contents, same pictures, chapter numbers, etc. Are they kidding?

Did these companies merge or something?

  3. Since the delivery from Amazon, everything looking well, but I don't received the book yet. I believe the delay could be from mail services here, but I can find my package. Could you help me?

  4. Good product, in excellent shape. There would be some more imformation to be written in that book; it just so happens that I needed to locate the heater's resitance in a 1997 Mazda b2300 and they just don't say no nutinn about this specific part. The person who sent me the book does not have anything to do with that of course. The book was very clean and in excellent order when arrived at my home.

  5. The manual was in very good condition and arrived in a timely manner. The manual is not quite as informative and detailed as I was hoping but still is a very helpful reference in repairing various aspects of my Mazda B3000 truck.

5 comments about Saab 900 16 Valve Service Manual: 1985-1993/Including All Turbo Spg, and All Convertible (Saab Part No. P/N 02 16 861).
  1. I bought this manual because I expected it to be an improvement over my other manuals - and it certainly was. This is probably the most complete SAAB service manual in existance without acquiring the actual SAAB service manual(s) themselves.

  2. This is a must for the eager home-mechanic. It's the B202 and B212 Bible!

  3. If you are sick of the Saab 900, you need this book to understand the exclusive technics of this car.
I would say, that this book is the best compendium and better than books of other suppliers like Haynes.
But, what you have to know, this book is not complete either. You don't find all wiring diagrams of all years in this book. Some necessary explanations like changing a convertible roof will not be found in this book. That's really bad because the car on the cover suggests information like this. Moreover I think that the book could be revised the next time, because after 15 years finishing of production you don't get anymore all parts for the 900/1. Some ideas could be helpful. But you can be sure that you get good explanations and tricks that you need to let your Saab live longer.

  4. Excellent product at an excellent price! Much more through than any Chilton or Haynes manual I have ever used. The illustrations are also exceptional.

  5. Somewhat expensive. Sturdy volume. Pictures very helpful. Have been able to accomplish all repairs attempted using this guide. Paid for itself after first job. Recommended.

5 comments about Rochester Carburetors.
  1. Rebuilding a Rochester can be a little intimidating. Let's face it, you can't successfully work on something that you don't understand. If you read this book before you begin, you will understand what the function is of every part that you'll see on your Qj. If you've rebuilt a few Rochesters before and need to fine tune a Quadrajet for a performance engine, this book will answer most all of the questions that you might have.

Roe does an excellent job discussing carburetor theory. He shows clear, large photos of each carb circuit. The choke system on a Quadrajet can be very complex, so I've found myself pulling this book off the shelf time and again and using the excellent illustrations to figure out just how the linkage is supposed to go. He also included a helpful section on building for performance, and fixing idle problems associated with long duration camshafts.

This appears to be the later version of this book. Therefore, it also contains tips on rebuilding the dreaded "CCC" or feedback carb, also know as the electronic Quadrajet. The first version had more information on the 4GC and 2G carbs, but there is still some information provided on each.

I would like to point out one area that I disagree with the author about. Unless you are doing a concours restoration, avoid the 1965 - early 1967 Quadrajets. First of all, the pressure regulated fuel inlet valve (a deviation from a normal needle and seat) is unavailable. Most people won't even know what you are talking about when you mention it. A conversion kit to convert to a conventional needle and seat is included with most rebuild kits, but Roe recommends avoiding these. Secondly, it appears that the "issues in the field" that he mentions, were probably engine fires. Not something that I want to take a chance with.

Roe's work on Rochester carbs is important because the Rochesters, especially the Quadrajet, are vastly underated. There is a very good chance that you could run a Quadrajet on your vehicle and gain fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. In this day and age, that is no small consideration. On a 327 I've run three Quadrajets (#7045263, 7043250, and 7029207) against an out of the box fresh Holley 6619. The best Quadrajet, which happened to be new also, beat the Holley on an identical course by about two miles per gallon with no perceived loss of performance! My motivation to run the Quadrajet came largely from Roe's book. If you would like to read more about the Quadrajet - Holley comparison, type the carburetor numbers and Holley into a search engine.

Having read just about everything in print regarding Rochester carburetors and having rebuilt somewhere between fifty and one hundred Quadrajets over the last twenty years or so, I strongly recommend this book. In short, if I was looking to buy a book on Quadrajet carbs, this is the book I would buy. Roe does the builder a huge service with the many photos he uses to accompany the text. He also gives excellent tips on how to handle some of the more difficult tasks involved when rebuilding a Quadrajets as well as things to look for when troubleshooting. You will hugely increase your chances of a successful Quadrajet rebuild if you read this book first.

  2. This book did not provide the basic tuning I was looking for. This book provide good technical information on carborators and modifications. Doesn't tell me how to adjust things like mixture, speed, choke and vacuum related stuff.

  3. This book is excelent, starting with basic explinations of how carburetors work, moving on to detailed instructions on how to rebuild, tune and modify for performance or economy Rochester carburetors. A must for the GM HotRodder.

  4. I just wish there was more information on the dual jet. I race an IMCA Hobby Stock and we are required to run an OEM 2BBL carb and finding tuning tips and performance ideas for them is almost impossible. There is some info in here on them and it is the best I have found.

That being said I run Qjets on my street cars and this book is awesome and loaded with info and tuning tips for what is probably the most tunable carb ever made.

    -Joe

  5. What a great book. My stepdad was rebuilding the carb in his 81 Vette, and he's been a mechanic for 35+ years, and was struck. he asked around for this book, and I was able to get it on Amazon, a week later he told me this is the best book he's read on any car part. Great instructions, walks you right through the rebuild, perfect all around. If your looking to rebuild your Rochester carb, this is the book to get
