  1. I believe that the Title of this book should be "Ford Flathead Builders Handbook 1932-1953" not 1932-1958. Jay Smith

  2. Book is fully illustrated, shows stock & high performance rebuilds; finding the perfect block, selecting the correct components; manifolds, heads, camshafts, crankshafts, pistons, ignitions, exhaust, boring, stroking, porting & relieving & cooling. Very well put together book.

  3. Thinking of modifying that old flathead V8? If so, pick up this book, lots of really good hot rod stuff to help that flathead perform bette than before. Good tips on fuel, oil, heads, and all other aspects of building a hot rod flathead. Written by Frank Oddo, of Street Rodder magazine fame, this book is similar to the year long buildup they had a few years ago in Street Rodder. Excellent reference for building a non stock flathead

  4. This book details the quest of a flathead ford build up. While most of the info is centered around the later 49-53 engine (which is the one the author is building) there are off-shoots in appropriate places detailing the other differences for those working with the earlier engines. Lots of detailed information about many aspects of the disassembly and build. This and Tex Smith's (by Ron Ceridono) are the two best flathead books available. There is little other published information that these two books do not include.

  5. Yea, If'en you be a own'en one of them there Ford(or French) flatheads, then you sure gots to have one of these good old boys books. It has a lot of very useful info and teamed up with a few others, you pretty much will have everything you need to know..I am most happy... (been a flathead owner most of my 50 some mechanical years)

  1. There is so much to learn from this great collection of Cameron's writings. I really enjoyed reading this book.

  2. Kevin Cameron writes in a uniquely odd manner but if you're a gear head or just interested in learning WHY some stuff gets done, eventually, you'll like the book. I had been reading his stuff in magazines for a long time and wondered when an all encompassing compendium of his work might surface. This would be it.

Can you read the whole thing at once? I doubt it. It's not that kind of book. You need to read it, attempt to understand what he just said, and then move on. Can't do that in one sitting for sure.

Overall, I enjoyed the read as much as the "ride" it takes you on.

    AD

  3. If you were an avid motorcyclist in the 1960s to 1980's and followed the races you will enjoy the time capsule perspective of Kevin Cameron. It will bring back happy memories.
If you're from the recent era it provides a great perspective on how different things were yet how the same in the attitudes and tribulations of racers.
Hopefully it will make you want to look at more of Kevin's modern thoughts.
He has perhaps one of the most insightful minds in the motorcycle world.

  4. I was really hoping that this would cover his technical and engineering realted articles that he does so well and gives the reader so much insight into the technology of motorcycling. This book is mostly concerned with people and personalities such as riders and mechanics and even manufactuers such as Mr. Honda. All well writen and very informative. But as I said there are not really any of the technical articles here.

  5. I have read this book and found it quite interesting. It would be a great present for someone who was involved with racing in the 1980. It is not a technical book at all. It is stories about experiences at racetracks around the world. Very well written but as I am not from that era, I found more of a history book than anything else.

  1. i bought this book to learn the basics of the windsor engines and it has a lot of information....now i am ready for more and it is time to move on to more specifics...i do recommend this book highly if you are going to build a windsor and want some basic info on what the different components are.

    matt

  2. I've purchased almost all Ford SB Windsor literature.. this particular book is absolutely the Best I got. I'm not saying it's perfect, but still is unique in a way that it illustrates how to carry out performance assemblies step by step.. such as building a 347 cid stroker, porting a head, installing force induction stuff, timing a cam or tuning a carb (I use EFI but it's good to know how). This book is not another performance parts catalog in the shape of a "book"! This one is very similar to what you can find on the tech pages of websites such as FordMuscle.com, CarCraft.com, MustangandFords.com

  3. I am a fan of fords and this is a very helpfull book. Explains alot of things that other books do not.

  4. Before you read up further, this book doesnt cover the 351 Cleveland engine.

If you are about to rebuild and add performance to your small block Ford engine this book is ideal.Takes you through a history of fords small block V8's: 302/5.0L,351W/5.8L and EFI manifolds and performance upgrades.Note:It doesnt cover the 351C.This book is divided into sections with plenty of information and photos throughout.Even tells you about EFI engines and fitting into earlier model Fords. Also includes performance build ups and superchargers, turbocharging and nitrous.Definitely a comprehensive book thats easy to understand and good value too.

I give this book 4 stars as they are ALMOST as good as the "Cartech/S-A Design-workbench" books.

  5. Overall good description as well as technique of how to tune a sb engine, but i think the pictures could be a lot better, instead of of black and white, use color and clearer pictures to illustrate a particular topic.

5 comments about How To Rebuild BIG-BLOCK FORD ENGINES.
  1. I rebuilt my first engine, a 390 FE, with this book. It is worth it's weight in GOLD. From pulling the engine to bolting it all back in and turning the key, it's all covered here. Rebuilds are surprizingly easy and the satisfaction of doing yourself is the best reward.

  2. Great book if you are rebuilding an old block out of an old car with original parts. Lots of basic info. Apart from the basics, this book is useless if you are (re)building an engine using new and modern performance parts for a hot rod or kit car. Then again, the book is 22 years old. Missing were Torque tables and how to basically tune the engine and the carb for the breaking in milage. Not much point having the engine professionally tuned or dynoed if the engine is not yet broken in, you have to do it again after a few 1000 miles.

  3. This makes the second purchase of this book for me, as my first from years ago was lost in a recent move. Most of the important information is there, leaving out only the non-crucial parts. I would recommend this book for all FE Ford guys, from the novice to the guys who were there when the FE was new.

  4. From the title I assumed it included the Ford 460. I ordered the book for that specifically and it was not included. As a book it is very thorough and includes many photots and step-by-step for a complete rebuild.

  5. A nice reference for those who are interested in vintage big block Ford performance engines.

5 comments about Luxury Toys (Luxury).

  1. Compiled and edited by Anja Oriol, Luxuary Toys is a beautifully illustrated, 219-page, coffee-table showcase of things that only the fabulously wealthy can afford: Gulfstream private jets, Ferretti and Wally yachts, Ferrari and Bentley cars, and more. Very little text introduces these photographic galleries, but the writings that are present are in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. The majority of Luxury Toys is devoted entirely to vibrant, full-page color photographs and some technical specifications charts. For those who do not have millions of dollars to burn, Luxury Toys is an incredible showcase of high-priced and lavish vehicles, and the next best thing to visiting expensive auto, boat, or plane shows.

  2. I was very happy with the book. But, Amazon takes too long to ship products. It arrived several days after I expected it and therefore missed Valentines day. I just ordered some perfume through amazon March 3, it shipped on March 7 and not scheduled to deliver until March 20. I order lots of itmes on line and Amazon is the slowest vendor .

  3. Small boys and big boys wants the same things : TOYS. It's just the price that change depending on the age.

This book is fantastic. I found also a site where there is a lot of very impressing luxury tous : http://www.europaluxury.com

  4. The luxury as a way of living is an exquisitely illustrated book, which explores the universe of some expensive top of the line products, whose acquirement and enjoyment use to afforded by a select minority; ferretti and Wally yachts; Aston Martin; bentley and Ferrari; Gulfstrema private jets; Cessna Citation x, Jaguar xKR, Porsche Carrera GT are just only a few examples of sumptuous playthings of the affluent shown here - a set of golden dreams objects - that many would desire but few can afford. Your imagination will fly and ignite as well as your information scope around these "toys" designed with first-rate technology, impeccable refinement and top-flight design that conform an important place into the sweet life.

  5. The best wish list ever! Everyone should have these toys at least for once in a lifetime.

  1. This book is an important, stylish look at a halcyon time in U.S. automotive history, when dreams became real and art and style were as significant as horsepower and torque. If you're an afficianado of the big cruisers Detroit cranked out in the late fifties and early sixties, this book shows you the wildest styles possible from the designers and how they were translated into what you drove into your driveway. It's a well put together compilation, and the book itself is heavy and durable. Any car collector or petroliana devotee will love it!

  2. Very nice book loads of pix and info. Bought as gift. Guys who are into old GMC iron will be ingrossed for hours!

  3. Great book, well done. It answered some questions i had.
    Great job. Transaction was great.
    Larry Sherrill

  4. Cool Book, Beautiful pictures. Lots Of Cars I have not seen before, Some I have. Worth The Price.

  5. An easy book to read, with interesting information about each car. I was also curious to find out what happened to the cars. Dream cars were very popular in the 50's and 60's and this book covers GM's contributions well.

  1. Woo, hoo, what a fun car.

  2. Everything you need is here; except the parts. Only the factory manual could be more complete and that book is harder to read and doesn't include the easier to read wiring diagram or the much clearer exploded parts diagrams and the pictures. Maybe the Victoria British catalog is clearer on the parts, but not on the knowledg to fix the darn things.
Keep a copy in the boot with your torch, spanner and a length of broom handle for whacking the starter. You'll never know when the anti-christ Lucas will strike or rust will win over that amazing british steel.

  3. This manual covers most of the basics but has general information only and lacks a lot in specifics regarding different models. Body and Chassis
section is not very in depth. It is a simple repair manual and not a restoration manual. Haynes could make three, possibly four, manuals for this car and be more specific.

  4. This manual is basically a condensed version of Robert Bentley's "The Complete Official MGB". I now have two manuals with the same information.

  5. I recently rebuilt my engine on my 1972 MGB, and while I did find the chapter on engine rebuilding helpful, there were times when the writing could have been less vague, not to mention the archaic use of "whilst" for the word while. The section on inserting the distributor drive was vague, and I had often contacted Brit-Tek for much-needed advice. Also, on the section describing replacing the rings, the book states to have the ring gaps at a 90 degree angle from the thrust side of the engine. The book doesn't tell you that the thrust side is the right side of the engine. There are also sections in the book, such as that for torque settings, that merely state what the torque settings are for early and later cars -- but without being specific and stating which years are the early and which years are the later cars! There are three different connecting rods, and mine requires the torque setting of 33 pounds. This is not the early setting, which I believe they have at 40 pounds. Again, this is essential to know, if you don't want to snap a nut and incure the cost of purchasing new connecting rod bolts. Issues such as this, make the book sometimes frustrating. I also had the help of a British car garage, Moss Motors and Brit-Tek -- both of which were a great help. The folks at Victoria British generally have little or no knowledge of mechanical issues. Finally, I will add that Peter Burgess' book "How to Power-Tune your MGB" was further helpful.
