2 comments about Corvette C3 1968-1982 Buyer's Guide.
  1. If you want to buy a Corvette of this era then this book is for you. There is so much information that will help you decide which model to buy. Each chapter covers each year model in great detail. This book is your guide to buying the Corvette model that suits you.The colour photographs do this book justice and represent each model.
I also recommend the following books:
1)"Corvette 1968-1982"(Sports car color history series)
2)"How to restore & modify your Corvette 1968-1982".

  2. I am finding this book very informative on the 3rd generation Corvette. It has excellent detailed information on what to be aware of when considering the purchase of a 1968-1982 Corvette or just to enhance your knowledge of the C3.

3 comments about Subaru Legacy 1990 thru 1999: Includes Legacy Outback & Legacy Brighton (Haynes Repair Manual).
  1. This manual, with flimsy news print pages, is specific to a rebuild and did not have the basic info I needed. If you are going to rebuild your Subaru's engine, this is what you want, if you're just trying to do maintenance and basic repairs, move on.

  2. Yes, it is printed on thin paper and it is a paperback, but this is the norm. The directions are complete and basic enough for a non-mechanic to understand. If something is not in here, check the owner's manual.

  3. I have generally preferred Haynes manuals over Chilton's but the first time I used this it has some incorrect information in it. The headlight adjustment screws on a 98 Legacy GT I had just bought were rusted and could not be turned (both lights were pointing right at the ground in front of the car). I removed both headlight assemblies and sat the screws in penetrating oil to free them up. However, the manual had reversed which headlight controlled the horizontal and vertical adjustments. While this is faily minor and obviously easy to figure out, it has reduced my confidence in the rest of the book somewhat.

5 comments about The Cruising Life: A Commonsense Guide for the Would-Be Voyager.
  1. This is a book written for Americans by an American. As a non-American some advice was irrelevant to me. Apart from this, I found it very useful; valuable insights as to what to expect from a cruising lifestyle, motivation to take the plunge and above all a humorous writing style. I found it compelling. Definitely a good book to read before you buy your yacht, and reread many times before you leave.

  2. Ok if you need som basic advice about making a decision to live aboard. Mostly it is posturing by the author and not much by way of real information, or thought provoking stories.

  3. This book was about how to become a "minimilist". (In other words, get rid of all your material stuff, your ideas of "status", start to live simply, start exercising, and start saving, saving, saving!!) By building your "kitty", you're able to buy your boat with cash. It, too, was about practical stuff and a much simpler life! The only regret I had was that it didn't have any pictures! Other than no pictures-I loved it!

  4. Can't say enough about this book. Stright talk about cruising life, not just another euipment & tech guide. To top it off he mixes in enough humor to keep a smile on your face. My wife and I fight ove who gets to read it.

Thanks for giving us a truley great book Jim!

  5. Over all I thought there were a lot of good tips and insight in this book. I do agree with a previous review that the author does tend to glorify wooden boats a bit. It was a good purchase, I'd buy it again.

4 comments about Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals.
  1. Written 10 years ago, the author spent just over a decade to finish this book. Having said that, there are still a lot to learn from this book. I am currently using it as THE textbook of my course (undergraduate and postgraduate).

  2. almost all the areas concerning internal combustion engines are covered in proper detail. it is useful for related undergrad and grad studies, also an indispensable reference for grad research work in engine technologies.

  3. This book is my Bible. It does not explain you how to add 2HP to the engine, it explains how all that works and why, with theory, numbers and serious real world tests.
You may be interested in the theory: you'll find all you need to understand more detailled research papers.
You don't need theory: you may simply trust very comprehensive and clear conclusions which explain with figures and numbers how thinks work.
The book covers Spark Ignited and Diesel engines, indirect and direct injected.
The book does not cover recent works on high speed SI (like Honda VTEC) and turbo-diesel engines, as well the indirect injected stratified combustion engines.

  4. I'm not a mechanical engineer and I have been able to follow the book well. It goes really in depth in some places, so you have to know when to skip a few pages. But it is fine for a final year undergrad course, and I'm sure it would work for a grad course as well, but if you don't have a good math and science background (ie engineering), then just research www.howstuffworks.com and then subscribe to a few car magazines. There is a lot of practical info in here as well, but don't kid yourself, most of this is theoretical backround. I am an electrical engineer who wanted to get into hybrid vehicles, and I think if you are like me and want to just buy one book on ICEs, this is it.

5 comments about Jeep Cj Rebuilder's Manual, 1972-1986: Mechanical Restoration, Unit Repair and Overhaul Performance Upgrades for Jeep Cj-5, Cj-6, Cj-7, and Cj-8/Scrambler.
  1. Expertly detailed by a master mechanic: his shop pratices and many tricks of the trade alone would be worth the price of the book. I found a lot of informations I can directly use in my project, not only the "how" but also the "why" and "why not". This book touches on the fact that most modifications have both advantages and inconvenients and will save me time and money. Clear and concise writing.

  2. The book is well illustrated and well written, but does not really apply to the average shade tree/geekmo mechanic such as myself. Hanes or Chilton does a much better job explaining average maintenance. One thing I was looking for was lacking - how to upgrade the smogged up engine by way of a weber carb conversion. The only option in this book was to go with a fuel injection system - expensive and technical. A disappointment for me, but for the master mech, excellent.

  3. This book is a great book for the hands on beginner. Even if your not a mechanic with the information of this book AND a service manual you can tackle almost any job. This is not to replace a factory service manual but it does complement it. With the two books you could even repair the motor or transmission yourself. Moses does write in plain simple easy to understand english. I have other Ludel books and they are all good complements to any service manuals.

  4. If you are a hands on person with your Jeep or are building one up, this book will prove to be one of the most valuable sources of information.

We are VERY happy with it. Moses Ludel really knows his stuff!

  5. A+ instruction book! Lots of hands on and detailed.

    A lot better than most.

5 comments about Haynes Jeep Wrangler 1987-2003 (Haynes Manuals).
  1. There are too many years included in this book. There are hundreds of minor (and not so minor) differences in makes of jeeps over the years. Every year is different and the technology has changed. I could not even find some of the simplest things I needed to know when looking under the hood of my '02 Wrangler Sport. What an incredibly frustrating experience (you car fixers know what I mean!!!) What a waste of my time. What a waste of my money.

I am going to try to get my hands on a dealer/mechanics book.

  2. Nothing new and exciting for this edition. In fact, most of the content wasn't even related to the '03 model (which I have and need a book on). I would recommend picking up a different book if you really need to know the newer technology on Wranglers.

  3. I'f you're repairing / refurbishing your Wrangler.. All the details you need are in there.

  4. Excellent guide to repairing my TJ. For instance, I had never thought twice about the admonition to disconnect ground wire to battery before working on front suspension - figured it was a safety precaution to prevent engine from starting. It's indeed a safety precaution, but not because of the motor turning over - it's to prevent the air bags on newer TJs from deploying! The front air bag sensor is in or near the steering box, and COULD deploy if struck by hammer, jack stand, etc. It's a timely AND cost savings warning - as anyone who has had to replace air bag packages can testify to!

  5. I recently inherited a 1987 Jeep Wrangler that some would say made a better yard ornament than a vehicle. I needed a resource to get me started on the restoration process and found the Haynes Jeep Wrangler 1987-2003 manual to be in invaluable source of information. This Haynes Manual has become my 'bible' for nearly every step of my new found endeavor. The manual is well written with detailed, clear, illustrations for each component of this vehicle. I would highly recommend this "must have" manual for the Jeep enthusiast.

5 comments about Drive Without Fear: The Insecure Driver's Guide to Independence.
  1. I am in my late 20's and since I came here in US I have always been scared of learning how to drive. I tried to practice with my husband but oftentimes I get frustrated with myself. I just bought this book a week ago and I started practicing this weekend. I have let go of my fear (which to me a good start). I focus on the road and stop watching the nose of the car and it made a lot of difference. I am going to work on my turns still but I am excited to learn more.

I am hoping to get my license this year!!! I know I can so can you!!

  2. The best thing about this book is that it is very encouraging to fearful drivers. Its message is that you can be happy just being a neighborhood driver, and if careful, you will probably never have an accident near your own neighborhood. This is very good news, however, I'm not so sure how true it is, considering the number of teenagers getting into accidents in my neighborhood. I am a careful driver, but if a maniac teenager hits me, I will get into an accident anyway. The other great thing about the book is its tips for preventing accidents, such as stopping is not always the right thing to do, look in the mirror often, put your car over the black shadow on the road to stay in your lane, etc. From my experience driving with an instructor for over 40 hours, Mr. Klein's tips are valid and useful, and include mistakes I've made. However, his section on steering really confused me. You cannot learn to steer from a book. You need to feel the car and drive to learn to steer. Overall, I am happy with the book's message that I can drive if I tried.

  3. I finally got my license after 4 years in USA. My advice is to practice a lot. The fear will go away the more you get behind the wheel. Pretty soon, you can't wait to do it on your own.

Use this book to guide you and prepare you for situations you will normally face on the road - like staying on your lane, turning the proper way, etc.

I just turned 29 and just got my license this Feb 14 and I have been driving myself back and forth to work using the hi-way after. Believe me, I was scared to get behind the wheel, just the thought of my driving instructor coming to pick me up is agonizing = ). This book has helped me a lot in overcoming my fear. Just tell yourself "You can do it! no matter what others say, who cares about AGE, you can do it!" Be patient with yourself.

Don't be afraid to fail in your license exam, I failed once and the examiner gave me a laundry list of what to work on. I failed big time
then I practiced then I tried again and I passed.

Please get behind that wheel with a friend, family member or someone PATIENT.

  4. I really can't believe this book got so many good reviews. I bought this book because I have an intense fear of freeway driving. I thought maybe this book would have some good advice. The title of the book should really be "How to Drive." Because that's really all it is, a glorified drivers ed manual.

Also, I found that the author seems to be very chauvinistic regarding women drivers. The book reads like it was written in the fifties.

  5. The "Drive Without Fear: The Insecure Driver's Guide to Independence" book was one of just a few excellent reference sources for my safe driving CD "Mind the Road - Mind the Road: Waking Hypnosis for a Conscious Commute. The advice and recommendations from this book were a great inspiration for the suggestions my audio CD gives to drivers as they start their drive to have a safe and focused drive. I would highly recommend this book with my audio CD to help drivers be prepared for what potentials the road may present to them.

5 comments about MGB Restoration Manual (Restoration Manuals).
  1. I've owned the same MG since '78 and it was beginning to show it. This manual has enlightened me on what it's going to take to bring it back to original condition.

  2. There is a lot of really good information in the book that is not in the workshop manuals. However, there is not a lot of explanation of the processes for some of the jobs in the book. Nevertheless, its still the best book of its kind. What I would like to seel is three or four more complete books covering separate phases of restoration in greater detail. Also, more coverage of the difference between different years would be great.

  3. This is NOT the foundation book for MGB maintenance and repair. That honor is still held by the Haynes MGB 1962 thru 1980 book published in the 1980's and often delivered as part of the "kit" to anyone buying an original MGB, as I just did.

This book, however, is a really superb rendition of modern guidance, with superb photographic essays of complex operations. Although it has a color cover, all of the photographs are in black and white. The book is a real build on top of a normal repair manual, with sections on history, buying (BUY THIS BOOK BEFORE YOU BUY AN MGB), and then bodywork, interior trim, mechanical, electrical, and so on.

The third book that I recommend is Anders Ditlev Clausager's "Original MGB With MGC and MGB GT V8." This is a coffee table book, a "this is what perfect looks like," and it is both inspirational and just plain delightful. I drove my 1964 MGB across the country in the four days after I bought it (at 2500 RPM most of the way, 65 mph, but on special stretches of Iowa, doing 4000 RPM for sustained periods) because I love this car as a sports drive, not a driveway show car. Still, it is really great to see what perfection without regard to long haul rallying looks like, and I could not do without all three books.

  4. This book has been around for a good 15 years and is still one of the best on the topic of MGB restoration. The only flaw, and its a big one is that a lot of the photos are horrible; dark and hard to make out.

  5. This book gives a great overview of all the potential "opportunities" in restoring an MGB> a "must have" book.

5 comments about How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. i purchased the book and it is indeed a wealth of information. however the jigs and tooling you need to do a complete tranny rebuild properly will cost you way more than you would ever save trying to rebuild it yourself. its just not worth it . hell i had a reputable shop pull mine rebuild it put it back in replaced the mounts cooler lines and facory torque converter and they gave me a 2 yr waranty on it for less than $...
hell im an aircraft mechanic and didnt want to attempt the rebuild on my #s matching tranny. Its like Clint Eastwood says "a mans gotta know his limitations.".

  2. Great reference for rebuilding any TH400 - contains complete information in a step by step format. This is the first reference I've seen that contains information about the TH400 used by AMC (Jeep) other than the actual service manuals.

  3. If you want to rebuild or modify a TH400 for racing, this is the book to have!

  4. This book covers all you need to know on rebuilding and modifying your Turbo 400 transmission.Every chapter is explained in great detail.Plenty of information, diagrams and photos throughout.

If you are rebuilding and modifying your Turbo 400,this is the ideal book to have.

  5. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE EARLY EDITION OF THIS BOOK WHICH THE COVER PICTURE SHOWS ON THE WEBSITE YOU WILL NOT GET WHAT YOU ARE ORDERING. YOU WILL GET THE LATER EDITION. I HAVE ASKED AMAZON TO CHANGE THE COVER PICTURE BUT AS OF TODAY NO ONE IS LISTENING.
