5 comments about Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology, 5E.
- nice book the price is high but you'll be happy that you have it!
- as a homeowner considering central air and seeing how idiot contractors screw people firsthand, I wanted to learn as much as I could about refrigeration and HVAC before hiring anybody. This book is great, from a design and selection standpoint on refrigeration all the way to installation and maintenance practices. I can easily see why it's a college textbook, too bad my college texts back in the day didn't explain the subject as well. You can basically read this book and understand refrigeration without taking a class.
- Many pictures, good text, complete, I recommend it. For all those that begin and they are already work in HVACR. The only problem is that it doesn't work with units international system (metric). It could be an international book. Greetings from spain.
- After "retiring" for the second time in my life, I found myself in a position to attend "re-training" due to the fact that I had closed my corporation after selling my business. In other words, the state considered me "unemployed". One of my options was a trade school and their programs. HVAC\R seemed interesting so I went with it. The above mentioned book was the standard issue. At first I was very pleased with it, although I did struggle to get through the chapters. I thought it was me, although in my first four "courses" I was carrying a 99% average, and tutoring younger students in Manual J, Manual D, and Heating Controls. It wasn't me. As I have had time to study this industry at my own pace, taking courses when I want, and taking time off to hone my skills with those in the business, I find that there are many books available that are much easier to understand, read, and follow. These "other" books contain as much, if not more practical information, and relate to real world requirements much easier, without having to decipher what the edited author intended. Had I not been "given" this book as a part of my "tuition", I would now be screaming for my money back. For what ever it is worth, one of the authors has written books on his own and they are excellent. I actually purchased several for "fellow students" that were struggling and these students were helped immensely. Perhaps it is the company that published the book. I am not sure. But I do know that I have looked at other books published by the the same company and have either returned them or not purchased them in the first place. Just my opinion. I may be correct, I may not.
- Unlike some textbooks which no one would buy unless they have to...this one is great if you're a technically-minded homeowner who wants to learn about your house's HVAC systems. It gives a lot of useful and well-presented information for the price. Also covers commercial systems.

5 comments about McQueen's Machines: The Cars and Bikes of a Hollywood Icon.
- Chad McQueen's input and those that were around McQueen make this such an interesting book. I gave it as a gift to someone who was a fan of Steve's. Loved the anecdotes throughout and great photos.
- My husband is a huge Steve McQueen fan as well as an avid motorcycle fan. He loves Steven Terrance(?) McQueen so much that we have a "Steve McQueen Latrine" in our basement. It is painted in the colors of the Le Mans car. He loved this book! Lots of pictures he hadn't seen before, plus some new tid bits of information. Great book.
- If you're a McQueen fan and a gearhead this book is a "must have".
Lots of beatiful pitures and stories behind The Cooler King's machines.
As a gearhead McQueen had a lot of cars and bikes and his passion is well explained in this book.
A good choice if you want a deep sight inside his garage and racing career.
Did you know that the famous McQueen's Speedster and XKSS were sold from the actor only to buy them again later in his life? And did you know that the Buggy in "The Thomas Crown affair" had a Chevelle engine?
You'll higly appreciate this book.
Marco
- Great book with lots of photos and information. A MUST for any Steve McQueen fan!
- I bought this book for my husband. He is a car nut and likes anything McQueen. The book exceeded my expectations. A great read with ample photos.

2 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles, 4th Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to).
- This book was packed full of very useful information, and was a joy to read. I normally can't just sit down and read a book like this, I've got a very short attention span. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Motorcycles, 4th Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to) had just enough humor packed in with all the information to keep me from being overloaded, and kept me looking forward to the next page. It took me less than a week of evenings to finish reading this, and I find myself re-reading sections every now and then.
Definitely a great book for the first-time rider. I own my own motorcycle now, and had a much better idea of what to expect thanks to this book.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
- BEING A NOVICE, THIS BOOK IS YOUR GUIDE TO WORLD OF MOTORCYLES. ENJOY IT.
VERY WELL WRITTEN.

3 comments about Used Car Buying Guide 2008 (Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide).
- Buying a used car? Read the "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide" first.
Rather than depend on the advice of semi-knowledgeable friends, a mechanic biased toward a car maker and not a specific vehicle, or by looking to see what your neighbor drives, you can depend on this.
I bought my last two cars using earlier guides.
In it, I found lists of "Good Bets," which are cars the authors consider to perform well over the years. That is guiding my purchase. I won't buy a car not listed there. I also found lists dividing reliable cars by price range, which cars have had recalls, unreliable models (by year), and detailed descriptions of the pros and cons of each vehicle.
That's not all. There are also articles on safety, buying strategies, batteries, insurance, towing, depreciation, tires and child car seats.
It is not a complicated book. It is straight to the point, with minimal car jargon. Novices like myself are not overwhelmed by information I am not concerned with.
I am interested in safety, performance, cost of repair and related information. I found all of this here. A Corolla from 2003 is not the same as one from 2002. While this is obvious, this guide helps is know why each is worth what they say.
I fully recommend "Consumer Reports Used Car Buying Guide." I am confident that because I have read it and will refer to it while I shop for an auto online, I am prepared to save money and to buy a better vehicle. You still need to test drive the vehicle, but this will help get you to that test.

- This book is such a great resource for buying a used car. Especially the real world MPG and reliability ratings. I'll never start research to buy another car without it.
- I have always used this book when purchasing new and used cars, gives the buyer an edge both for quality and price. It is now in a different format and I believe doesn't include as much information as when published in book form, rather than this extended magazine format. But, in this day when we must watch every penny, it is a must.

5 comments about Bicycling Science, 3rd Edition.
- I like science. I like bicycles. This book goes into much greater depth than most people will want. I couldn't even finish it. If you build bikes and/or are a physicist or engineer and like biking then you will probably enjoy it.
- I used the book mainly to write a report on the history of recumbent bicycles. But it is an excellent source for bike history and science in general. David Gordon Wilson goes into great detail, both conceptually and technically, with regard to bike issues, such as aerodynamics.
- While I recommend it, I don't recommend you expect a real engineering reference or good reading cover-to-cover. It is somewhere in between and as such is not very good as either.
The charts and plots are good so if you only want it for that it's a great compilation of other sources and references. The history of the bicycle and the HPV chapters are very interesting. The book is one of a very few like it so "one of the best" is not that great of a compliment.
It is layed out and presented as an engineering reference type book on a specific topic (something like a Mark's for bikes) but it's nowhere near as consistent, rigorous, or detailed. A better description would be "musings on bicycle design and science" by someone who is genuinely very knowledgeable on the topic.
My biggest problem is with the narrative. It has way too many opinions. Many are simply some ideas the author has about a particular design or test (there's no data in this area but one way to get some would be this...). It also has way too much anecdotal evidence which is (thankfully) usually presented as such. And worst of all there are many opinions that are generally made to sound like facts through casual use of expressions such as "future testing should..." "it is recommended" "conventional design practices" "according to some" and so on.
To sum up if you are an engineer looking for an engineering reference you'll be disappointed. If you are a lay bike geek you'll probably find it too technical.
- As Miss Jean Brodie said, "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like." She meant it as an insult, but I don't. Bicycling Science is nerd heaven, full of physics, engineering, molecular biology, aerodynamics and all kinds of other scientific manna. If you have an appetite for charts, graphs, and research studies, then this book will delight you with its explanations of why bikes work so well with the human body.
It's not casual reading by any means. I'd prefer the same information presented in slightly less academic tones, but that doesn't mean it isn't accurate or interesting. So I dip into my copy for short bursts. For me, it's not a cover-to-cover read, but it's been on my bedside table for months because I pick it up regularly.
Bicycling Science may well be more technical info than a casual fan can absorb. However, it's a great reference that will demystify your bike -- if that's the sort of thing you like.
- Way more information than a casual reader needs, but chock full of engineering and design information for a bike builder. Also a good reference to refer to for evaluating performance and design claims by bike retailers. Before you plonk down $2000 for that special road bike, check the stats against this book. Oddly, steel frame bikes are pretty darn good when designed and built right. Do you need carbon fiber? Hmm.

5 comments about Scooters,Automatic Transmission 50 to 250cc (Hayne's Automotive Repair Manual).
- this book almost was what i was looking for i still had a lot of good info tho the shipper sent it out super fast and it showed up faster then i thought it would i very surprised at how fast it got here
- The Lovely Pearl ET4 on the front cover is not one of the models covered, a bit misleading. If you have one of the later L.E.A.D.E.R. engines, any engine work should be doable, since the ET4 and the LX share the same engine.
- Despite the different makes and models of scooters, there are many similarities between them. This book takes advantage of that, and instructs you on how to service the various components generally, and not specifically; service information specific to a particular make and model is not given. For example, in chapter 10 ("Electrical Systems") figure 7.1: "Wiring diagram for a typical turn signal system". Diagrams specific to each scooter model are not given. The idea here is after reading the manual, you should be sufficiently familiar with the components of a scooter that when you service yours you won't have too much difficulty, even if your scooter's engine and drivetrain isn't exactly like the one in the pictures. This does mean that there isn't a lot of hand-holding; if you want service details specific to your scooter model you'll have to buy the official service manual from the manufacturer (and pay the high prices).
The list of specific models covered by this book is derived from the "Data" section, where information (torque settings, bore and stroke, etc.) specific to each model is listed.
It would have been nice if time were taken to explain the operation of parts that are unique to scooters. For example, the variator (part of the CVT) is not something found on motorcycles and most cars. Chapter 6 (covering the transmission) explains how to remove and service the variator, but does not explain how it works. The addition of this information would strengthen the book considerably, as it would educate the reader as to the "why", and not just the 'how".
The content is a few years old, and more recent models are not included. This is something to keep in mind if you have a recent scooter with an unusual engine, such as a Yamaha C3, which is fuel-injected.
One thing to be aware of is this book is apparently written for a British audience (Haynes Publishing is a British company). This means that British English is used throughout, as opposed to American English. You'll see "spanner" instead of "wrench", "petrol" instead of "gasoline", "tyre" instead of "tire", "renew" instead of "replace", etc. This isn't a big deal, but may take some getting used to. Reference section 18 is about the MOT Test, which is given in England and not the U.S.A.
In all this is a very handy and useful reference. Combine this with parts diagrams for your particular scooter (obtainable online), and you should be prepared to tackle most service tasks.
- This book is essential for the person attempting to maintain or repair their own scooter. When used in conjunction with "The Scooter Book" also by Haynes, these two books are pretty much all that one needs when maintaining and repairing their own scooter. To me not as readable as "The Scooter Book", it is still essential to own as it contains the more technical aspects of servicing your scooter. It is a must have for the scooter owner determined to do it themselves!
- I like the technical written content of this book. It has a lot of practical tips and information on maintaining a scooter. Unfortunately, the black and white pictures are grainy and dark. That, coupled with the cheap materials used for this paperback book make them darn near unusable. I would say I could really make out the detail in only about 2/3 of the pictures. On many, I had no idea what I was looking at.
Still, this is a useful volume which I'm sure will help me, as I work on my own scooter.

5 comments about Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production.
- "Toyota Production System" was published in 1979 in Japanese and, in English in 1988. It is the source material on the toyota production system and, in my view, it is often good to go back to the source. Sadly, I found this book disappointing. The writing style is clunky (perhaps a poor translation) and the book lacks structure; being more of a semi-random collection of points than a development of ideas. Nevertheless there is some interesting stuff in here. The honesty that this is a long slow process (taking Toyota 30+ years) is refreshing, and I hadn't realised that Mr Ohno ranked kanban (with quick changeovers) as the core of the system and essential to success. Often in lean kanban seems to be a bit of a side issue: here it is vital. Also there is an interesting analysis of some of Henry Ford's early writings compared to TPS. This would be good material for a student essay. However, for the philosophy of TPS you will get much more out of "The Toyota Way" or "The Toyota Way Fieldbook"; and for the tools of lean go to "Lean Production Simplified" or the many other books in this area. Overall this book is a bit of a let-down I am sad to say.
- Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production
Great tool for understanding basics and roots of TPS
- A "must read" for anyone in manufacturing. It is the basis for all modern manufacturing, and for any business process or flow. The author describes the two pillars of the Toyota production system as autonomation and just-in-time. He explaines the six rules associated with the kanban. He also describes the seven wastes and the value of asking "Why" five times. The book is very easy and quick reading, and provides a complete backgroung to the Toyota development and success.
- The book is very good. But I am charged for an additional 10 euros by the mail delivery company for which I was not informed on the website.
So be careful when buying a book from here.
- I was going to give this book four stars, but I was going to be unfair with it. This is not a guide to create a lean enterprise, it was not meant to be one and I was going to judge it as if it was.
This is a great introduction to the Toyota Production System and lean philosophy, by nobody else but the architect of the system.
It had been a long time since I read such a dense book about any subject. If you are interested in getting started in the Lean methodologies then this book is a must read. If you work in a manufacturing plant or are in management then the insight on this book will be valuable for the rest of your life. I recommend it to my boss along with the Toyota Way because I think we need to start implementing all the techniques and management principles, specially when it comes to Human Resource management and policies, that made the Toyota the world leader it is.
A+.
