- I can only second what the first reader review of this book sais. I was amazed how the author takes you by the hand and how he does not forget to tell you even about the smallest details you might forget about! Tackling a th350 rebuild is something really advanced, even for a quite experienced gearhead but with this book you will be on the safe side! Good Luck!
- Great detail in this book, covers step by step process in re-building your tranny.
- Before starting my current restoration project, I knew absolutely nothing about working on cars - much less working on an automatic transmission. I purchased this book, built up my courage, and decided to attempt to rebuild my transmission completely on my own. With the help of the numerous pictures and detailed instructions, I had no problem doing my own transmission work. The author gives you a basic understanding of how a transmission works, details how to tear down the transmission, what to look for when inspecting the parts for ware, and how to put everything back together again. With this book, even a beginner can rebuild a transmission.
- I found this book to be informative and well written. I do believe it will be a great asset to my project
- I purchased this book with plans of rebuilding a TH350 transmission. I read through the book and it is quite thorough. It was recommended to me by several other gentlemen who had undertaken rebuilding this tranny and had successfully accomplished the task (by using the book).
This is one of those types of things when you have more time than money and can't afford to put the transmission in a shop for it to be rebuilt. You are going to need a few specialized tools or access to them to get this done.

- Why does this company have to publish these auto repair volumes on paper little better then toilet tissue? The information is fair to good, but with the poor quality paper, the photographs are almost useless for ready reference. $15- $17 is an OK price, just don't pay the list of $25. My rating would be 2.5 (50-50) if allowed.

5 comments about How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod, Revised Ed..
- As of Saturday, 25 Feb. I had not received the book. This was ordered priority mail. Is there a tracking number to check on this item?
- This book is very well done. It is mainly a one style book of ideas and those opinions and style come from the Bay Area of California so they may not exactly jive with So Cal or East Coast or anywhere else, but the info is very useful and well written. Don't necessarily agree with things like the stock 32 center cross member (too hard to change trans) or statements about the strength of stock trans and rear axles (have broken both with 304" flatty). Overall highly reccomended for Real Hot Rodders, if you aren't sure of the difference, look in the trunk - if there are tools, it's a Real Hot Rod, if there are only lawn chairs, it's a Street Rod.
- As a mere hobbyist, this was the book that made me realize "Wow! I can do this!". I found the enthusiasm of the writer to be contagious, the directions relatively clear (despite my lack of experience), and the advice to be sensitive-yet-consistent. Mike Bishop uses plain language and gives enough history to justify technical and aesthetic decisions without wasting words on superfluous background and gratuitous information. It's a short read that is chock-full of the exact knowledge I need to complete my build, but yet leaves plenty of room for individualization. If you are going to build a Model A hotrod, start with this book.
- Very well written; one of the only books I could find on "traditional" hot rods.
- Enjoyed the great tips on how to build a Hot Rod. This book helps you get more ideas than you already have. You will definately be informed.

5 comments about Car Hacks & Mods For Dummies.
- This book has a lot of information on someone who has just read an auto mechanics book. He touches ground on a lot of things, and could possibly change the way you would like to modify a car. I have no real bad things to say about this book except that it could go a lot more in detail.
- I wasnt sure what to expect with this book purely because of the inappropriate title, which doesnt do this book any justice. However, the book is better than I had hoped. Here's why:
This book is about customizing your car.Its a comprehensive-detailed book explaining how to customize your car. It covers so many things, which make this book a rarity. It tells you what to consider as well as what to avoid.
There are 2 faults with this book:
1)the innapropriate title. It should have been titled something more specific.
2)These series of books dont have photographs, just drawings. And,thats the bad news.
The good news is this book offers great advice on customizing your car.Its great value and a great book.Highly recommended.
Ignore the title. Its a book on customizing your car.
- Very Well written and informative, all basic modifications, but nonetheless well documented. So things were a little clunky and seem like instructiosn were an after thought but it was still worth the money.
- review:
I could post and prove 100 inaccuracies, but I will cover just one point, let me review chapter
VII, p189-197; INTAKE mods.
He is only trying to get you to buy expensive induction mods.
He never mentions the down sides. oop's ( that is the smoking gun )
First of all, he fails to mention that these changes only improve the breathing of
the engine at wide open throttle. A place that most people never reach.
He make blanket statements about gaining 8HP , but he never said on what size engine,
a 50HP smart car with 1000cc or 7 liter monster truck engine. Funny huh?
Blank statements are almost always wrong.
Consider this:
messing with the inducting will most likely foul up the function of the MAF sensor.
Removing the screen (a laminar air controlling device really) or any changes can
cause the MAF to read incorrectly and to read wrong at different RPM.s
This is really foolish.
or
Bad #2:
Oil soaked washable open air filters will coke up the MAF sensor with oil.
Greater HP is an outright fallacy.
The MAF sends the AIR flow values to the ECU the Oxygen sensor brings the engine to NEAR
the best combustion point 14.7 (A/F ration by weight) 15.6 is best MPG on most cars.
So, no matter what you do (save damaging the MAF readings) the car will always give the same MPG if these two sensors are working to spec.
Many false statements and many fibs by omission.
feeding air straight in to the throttle body will defeat the purpose of the MAF.
ALL MODERN ENGINES USE A MAF SENSOR. ( There are exceptions ,like a Jeep 4 Liter i6)
The #1 biggest restricting device to power, is the Throttle valve ,it is restricting at 70%
while drive down the highway at 60 MPH. ( in fact, that is its job, it controls power)
The #2 is the Size of the Intake valves.
A larger Throttle body will not increase power with out major engine changes.
Nor will silly throttle plate adapters .
Before you change anything, My I recommend that you review other peoples work using a dyno where they have worked hard and proven all the myths , true or false, on your exact car.
You can tune for power or MPG but not both. Read the Forums of MegaSquirt (tm).
(but a custom ECU can do both "the dual map trick") ( not on your ECU)
An Otto cycle automobile engine is an air pump; in order to pump more air , one only needs to study where the REAL restrictions are located and there magnitude.
Once that is learned , you can begin experimentation.
The book is very good in its coverage of what can be done but is weak on facts.
I check to Manufactures TSB data bases and found both to contain the order of not
honoring the warrantee with MODS to the engine. He calls this "Scrutiny", with a light mention. Not to mention the Smog station.
I have studied many TRACK tests that show no so called COld air induction kit improvements, with the exception of building a funnel box in the front of the car to scoop up air , or by taking the naturally pressurized air from the vent cowl below the windshield (if you have one).
this test must be done on a track because the car is not moving on a Dyno.
I hope I open some eyes on how to get to truth. ( testing , with control groups).
jtgh
- This book is great for an aspiring gear head. The content is easy to comprehend even if you are just starting off and have little or no knowledge on the subject. You do not need to know any specific background information or terminology beforehand, which is what makes this book great! This is the book for you if you want to distinguish yourself from the majority of self proclaimed "tuner experts" that don't actually know what they are talking about. David Vespremi will have you talking the "lingo" in no time, and you will feel comfortable hanging with any "tech talk."

5 comments about Toyota Camry,Avalon,Solara,Lexus ES300/330 Repair Manual 2002-2005 (Haynes Repair Manuals).
- This a great book it will help me maintain my Toyota.
- 1. The price of this manual is reasonable.
2. Some out-of-date information about procedures and parts.
3. Too technical which is not suitable for car owner (who has little knowledge about car) to do maintenance trouble-free.
4. Car owner could do approximately 25% out of 100% procedures of the whole manual. Please remember it depends on your car knowledge.
5. Haynes publisher do not care to respond their customer's e-mail and phone call for asking more information in the book as they promised to do so.
- This manual is really junk. Although the title says its for a Lexus ES300, the manual almost in its entirely covers the Toyota Camry. Pics are also 99% of the Toyota Camry with none of it covering the Lexus. Trim on a Lexus vehicle are completely different from a Toyota, yet the manual only shows pic for Toyota Camry 4/6 cycl model. I will not recommend this manual if you own a Lexus but may recommend it only if you have a Toyota.
- This book is fine for most simple do-it-yourself repairs. Had a version for my last car and it helped fill in the gaps in the owner's manual. At the least, it gives you some guidance when you need to take the car in for some real repairs, helps to cut through the technician's gibberish.
- This manual has been a great help for working on my '98 Avalon. The level of detail is excellent. Having this on hand, aviods the process of trial and error. Just a note, if you are changing a time belt, purchase or rent a crankshaft pulley bolt holder. This is not stated in the book. Enjoy!

4 comments about Honda Engine Swaps (Color Edition) (S-A Design).
- I am a novice when it comes to engines and cars, but I can understand this book very well! And it will be one of the main things helping me out when I swap a new engine into my CRX! This book really does cover just about every swap imaginable into any chasis... Even gives u great advice on what not to do, such as swaping out a V6 Accord for an inline 4, or trying to swap a fuel injected engine into a carbed chasis... It dosnt go really into detail on the wiring, no schematics, but with the broad options on engines and ECUs, I can certainly understand why, it tells you which service manual you will need to find those in tho, it dosnt leave you hanging there... It also gives u a broad idea of whats in store labor wise, what parts you will need, what you will need to wire (dosnt show exactly where tho), shows u where to get the engine mounts, sub-harnesses, and other parts you will need along the way, and from which cars... Really a great book and I highly reccomend it to anyone who is thinking of doing a swap into their Honda/Acura!
- Disappointing. Says is covers '84 on, but nothing on pre-'88 carb cars, other than a mention that they're orphans. Better advice on the Web for carbed cars. Disappointing.
- The book is pretty good. A lot of help if you are a novice, wanting to do a swap on your Honda and not sure what steps will need to be taken. I personally am satisfied. I used this book a couple times to help friends with engine choices for their cars and even helped me out when I did a D16Z6 swap in a 91 Civic DX.
Very easy to understand - could be a little more detailed, but for the price, you can't complain.
- Don't buy. Waste of money. Simply put. You'd be much better off getting factory service manuals if you want to do it right

2 comments about Ford Pick-ups & Expedition 1997 thru 2003 (Haynes Repair Manual).
- If you want to make engine repairs, this manual gives basic "how to" information. But there is no "tricks of the trade" type information and to really use this manual you will need to be pretty familiar with similar vehicle types and engine repairs and have all the "mechanic tools." It has a decent number of pictures but I have to agree with others that the Chilton manual has a few more pictures providing a little better detail and covering a few more subjects. I am not sure of the accuracy of the book because I had no intention in rebuilding the engine or transmission, so much of it is a waste to me. I really purchased it for information on how to remove & replace interior and exterior items that a mechanically inclined consumer might upgrade or to perform maintenance work such as belts, breaks, struts. For some of the maintenance items, there is information to work from as part of larger projects but in general this manual does not provide that information and I am disappointed in the purchase. It does provide some info for working on breaks and suspension, but if you have have the airbag suspension, the detail is lacking.
- We bought a book for our 99 Ford F250 It was great so when we needed one for my SUV 2000 we came back and ordered one form the same company. It is a great book with all and information you may need on your auto
