5 comments about Speed Secrets 3: Inner Speed Secrets: Mental Strategies to Maximize Your Racing Performance.
  1. What a revelation! We have been told for years that our mind harnesses the power to overcome all. In Ross and Ronn's book, these principles are succinctly laid out with techniques and exercises directly related to race driving. I recognized many situations in my own racing and have used their exercises to improve my performance and confidence on the race track. This book is a must read for anyone in racing (or in life)who wants to ensure consistency. For those who think racing is all guts - you are missing the boat (or shall I say the checkered flag) by not reading this book! PS - They also have a wonderful seminar too!

  2. Race car drivers can be, and must be continually developed beyond the capabilities of their car. Inner Speed Secrets clearly explains the mental engineering of today's winning drivers. If you are serious about your racing---this book is a must. Don Kitch Jr. Chief Instructor ProFormance Racing School Seattle International Raceway

  3. In the olympics, studies have shown that those who practice mentally (visualization, psychology, self-talk, etc) as well as physically (actual physical training) do better than those who just grind it out on the training field.

In a sport where there is a fusion of man and machine, it is even more important to "Maximize Your Racine Performance" by adhering to the strategies such as what Ross Bentley has outlined.

If you're a driver who has reached a plataeu and can't seem to improve, there's a great likelihood that it's not more practice or track time that's needed -- but more mental practice. And that's cheaper, too!

Ross outlines great mental techniques in this book that are easy to follow, and very applicable to the sport of race car driving.

For a bigger picture on Mental Training, I urge to to also look at Ken Baum's The Mental Edge. Then make sure you have this book by Ross to have mental training specific to race car driving.

    Highly Recommended!

  4. WE SPEND ALL THIS MONEY ON IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR CAR AND FORGET ABOUT THE MOST INTEGRAL PART OF THE PACKAGE, THE DRIVER. THIS BOOK ADDRESSES THAT ISSUE FROM A VERY UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE. THE OTHER BOOKS IN THIS SERIES DEAL WITH DRIVING TECHNIQUES. THIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE MIND GAME INVOLVED WITH GOING FASTER. I FOUND IT VERY INSIGHTFUL. THE TECHNIQUES USED IN THIS BOOK ARE BENEFICIAL NOT ONLY TO DRIVING, BUT TO EXCELLING IN ONE'S DAY TO DAY LIFE! A QUICK READ WITH A LOT OF POSITVE BENEFITS!

  5. As the title says, it's about racer's psychology and how to improve it, it covers many aspects of the human to help him perform better in racing.

As other Speed Secrets Books, it's well written with a lot of examples and illustrations.

I think racers who want to really accomplish in racing should get this book, and it's recommended to read the first books, and after doing some racing, this book should be read.

  1. It is a good merchandise very low price. It a great opportunity to learned all those trick that can help you to fond a solution on restoration and repair project.

  2. For every one who wants to take care of his lovely 240 car , book like this is essential in addition to recommendation from previous owner of Volvo cars and clubs you can easily find there web sites in the Internet.

  3. Bentley manuals are by far the best when it comes to back yard mechanic manuals. Coupled with[...] the average mechanic can fix almost anything. I highly recommend this manual if you own a 240 and enjoy working on your vehicles.

  4. If you own a Volvo 200 series, get this book. It's a much better reference than the cheaper books you'll find in your local auto parts store.

  5. If you own a 240 Volvo and even if you don't do much of the work on it yourself, this manual is a must have. Complete and clear with very few errors, this will tell you more about your 240 and how to fix it than anything you can buy for under $50. The factory books may well be better but this is relatively inexpensive and will pay for itself with the first moderate repair. Don't waste your money on Chilton's junk ... this is the repair manaual you will want if you own and love a 240 "Brick". It is the best 240 repair manual I have used in 25 years of Volvo ownership. I've used it for everyhting from simple repairs like brake pads to replacing an automatic transmission. I have saved literally tens of thousands of dollars fixing my Bricks using this great manual! Also make sure you check out the Brickboard.com online for great advice from the national Volvo loving community. With this manual and the Brickboard advice you can literally fix anything on your 240 Volvo.

5 comments about How to Paint Your Car (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. Typical over load on words pertaining to auto body shop repairs and prep for painting,"but lacks in information on painting a car. Out of 159 pages of print there is only 6 pages that actually decscribes anything that ressembles painting. I wish i had known this before i wasted my money. I would not recommend this book.

  2. Good book filled with current info on correct painting procedures. This book is very useful for all levels of body shop personnel or just a backyard painter.

  3. I found this book to be very informative, especially in the details that you can't get in conversations with experts. something about writing them down. Thank you very much. I just successfully painted my old truck
    Bill T.

  4. When I first started reading this book my first reaction was, "I better leave this to the professionals." As I got further in, I became more comfortable and decided to go for it. The step-by-step instructions and the illustrations made the job easy. I was very pleased with the results. I would recommend this book to anyone serious about attempting to paint their own car and getting the job done right.

  5. This book showed me the entire process of car painting, from beginning to end. I successfully painted my commuter car that just won't die, two years ago, and the paint job is still looking good!

Painting a car, as a novice painter, is a VERY large undertaking (the worse shape the car, the more time it will take). This book does a good job of warning of that, but after doing it myself, I can reiterate how time consuming it can be.

The thing that this book is lacking is more talk about paint chemistry, what to look for in a paint, and how to mix the paint. I was able to piece the mixing together by talking to the people at the local PPG store (who seemed to know less than I did, after reading this book).

If you're considering painting your car yourself, I would recommend this book - it will give you good insight about how to do it, and gives a realistic picture of how difficult it can be. Just be sure that you're serious about the job, before you take it on.... it's time consuming, detail intensive, and you don't want to be the primer/bondo monstrosities that you see on the street, sometimes.

5 comments about Porsche 911 Performance Handbook.
  1. A mostly great book, with a substantive review of the history of 'real' 911s, a huge amount of sound advice on maintenance and overhauling, detailed pictures of such arcana as variants of cylinder heads over the years, and practical, experienced advice on how to proceed if you are really determined to screw up your 911 by modifying it. The book is flawed only by being written from a "California" point of view, meaning lots of pictures of slantnoses and whatnot and too much encouragement to those who think badly-engineered aftermarket parts will actually "improve" on Porsche's incredible design. Still, if you have an air-cooled 911, and you have *any* inclination at all to work on it yourself, you need this book.

  2. Bruce's grasp of the intricacies of the 911 engine is excellent. This book is one of the best sources of information regarding the 911, and should be a staple in any owner's collection. The book focuses on the history of the 911 engine from a technical perspective, and then talks about performance modifications that can be performed on your car. The focus is the engine, with a lesser focus on the rest of the car's subsystems. The book's one drawback is the layout - the pictures don't match the text on the pages, and the index is just about useless. The book takes on more of an overview of the performance upgrade process with very little how-to focus. It's a great reference for learning about the modifications that you would want your mechanic or engine rebuilder to perform. Bruce's knowledge and integrity in his recommendations are also well respected in the Porsche industry.

  3. I have both a late model Turbo and looking for a 993 Supercup. The technical specs are good but the book jumps around in the model years. It is very funny to see Corvette wheels in a Porsche book. There are also too many high dollar advertising plugs. If you use Andial or Promotive to build you an engine-it's gonna cost you 30K. How's that for advise!!

  4. Bruce Anderson takes his 30+ years of Porsche experience and distills it down to one relatively simple guide book.

Covering the first 901's up to the last of the 993's, this book breaks down chapters by car parts. Suspension, gearbox, brakes, and engine all have their own chapters. Also included is a chapter on how to buy a good used 911, and an overview on engine rebuilding.

The bad side of this is that in some places, it can be a real dry read. Bruce is notorious for his use of charts and obscure
serial numbers in this book. If this can be forgiven, it is due to the fact that he compiles a lot of hard to find data for Porsche owners to have at their fingertips. As the last models covered in the book were the 993's, which were discontinued in 1998, this manual is long overdue for a 2nd edition to bring 996 owners into the fold.

While this manual would never be considered a replacement for a full blown repair manual or a factory manual, it is still a highly informative guide to finding more information on your air cooled Porsche, and making the right performance choices.

  5. Bruce is THE man in 911 repair/maintenance. This book is great for the new and long time owner of these mid-year Porsches. Very good detail and clear instructions throughout.

5 comments about Plug-in Hybrids: The Cars that will Recharge America.
  1. This book exposes American car companies indifference towards environment and national energy security. A must read for every American who cares about environment and terrorism.

  2. I like this printer cartridge, I think it actually prints better than the original. I was not sure it was going to fit, it looked different from the original cartridge. When I inserted it it locked right into place.
Definitely would recommend these, and will probably buy another one to keep as a spare.

  3. This book gives an unbiased view of what our options are as Americans on reducing and virtually eliminating our dependence on foreign oil. It also gives the pros and cons of alternative fuel sources as well as the great advantage of plug in hybrids over hybrids currently being sold.

  4. The title should read :- "Plug-in Hybrids; the Cars that will Transport the World". Sherry Boschert has done a wonderful job in drawing all the pieces together. It is a "must read" for those who have an interest in our transport future. I sincerely hope that by the year 2012, it will be completely implemented. However, I feel that the automobile industry and the oil companies will both fight very strongly, against the adoption of PHEV's. Also, the Governments of the world, will not be sufficiently forceful, to demand, that the automobile manufacturers produce quality PHEV's. They are our only answer, to vehicle pollution of our planet.

  5. A serendipitous find that changed my perspective on energy policy. I was looking for a how-to book and ordered this one "by mistake." I was somewhat skeptical, but the author held my attention through the entire book. By the time I completed the last page I was convinced that my attraction to plug-in hybrids was correct and my world view had changed considerably.

5 comments about 4-Wheel Freedom: The Art Of Off-Road Driving.
  1. I expected something different, so I don't blame the author, who has written a nice little treatise on 4 wheel driving for beginners. Absolute beginners. This book is a response to the recent popularity of SUV's, and to the fact that many folks have not a clue about what 4 wheel drive is or how to use it. It starts off at ground zero with the heartwarming little tale of a corporate lawyer and his management/executive wife buying their first SUV (awww...) and then taking it out for progressively friskier adventures until they get to really test themselves. Made me want to throw up, but then it's just not my style. If this is your style, if you honestly don't know which wheels get the power when one is stuck, if you have never used a high-lift jack, if you think a Land Rover is the functional equivalent of a Honda CR-V, then this is the book for you. The nutty title should have tipped me off, but I had my guard down and it slipped past me. It's foolish to think you can learn this stuff from a book, anyway...that right there is the BIG fallacy. Get out, get muddy and bust your knuckles and write your own book.

  2. recently purchased a Jeep with the intention of doing more 4x4 off-road exploration in the upcoming months. In my search for information I stumbled upon Brad DeLong's 4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving. This book clearly and confidently spelled out all that I needed to know to begin my adventures in a safe (individually as well as environmentally), respectful and confident manner. I was so pleased to find the author's compassion and sound respect for the environment and how he simply challenges his readers to have the integrity to do the same.

4x4 Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving is clearly organized into 14 chapters and several information filled appendices with resources for continued education. Packing Up - The Basic Toolbox, Rocks and Ravines - Basic Crawling, and Winches and Jacks - Up and Out are some examples of the chapters included. Each chapter presents basic knowledge and details on its theme and further clarifies the information with personal accounts that seem to wrap it all together for the reader.

This is an excellent addition to any personal library or bookshelf! Anyone who drives a vehicle with 4x4 and/or owns an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) will find useful information in this text and will benefit from its application at sometime in their life as a driver. Brad Delong presents information for all - from those experienced in 4x4 adventures to those with even a small bit of interest in 4x4s.

  3. This book is a basic introduction to driving off-road. If you don't know what a locker is, how it works or why you might want one for off-road use, you'll find the answers in this book. On the other hand, if you've decided to save money on a locker by welding the spider gears together in your garage, this is not the book for you.

Having said that, I think it's a very good introduction and I knocked off one star for its only fault -- I found the organization a bit strange. If you read through the book cover-to-cover though, you'll know where to find what you need in the book. I'd give it four and a half stars if I could.

On Amazon's recommendation, I bought this book with The Off-Road 4-Wheel Drive Book by Jack Jackson, which is a very different animal. Jackson's book is for hard-core expeditions more than recreational off-roading. Many paragraphs start with sentences like, "As I forded a raging river during the rainy season in Pakistan, the engine suddenly stalled." If you're planning on crossing the Sahara, I'd recommend Jackson's book for you. Even if you're not, he does give good ideas for tough situations and you know you're getting advice that's been tested off-road in some of the worst conditions imaginable.

The bottom line: if you're just starting out, buy DeLong's book alone. If you find yourself venturing off-road more and more and you'd like to be more independent, buy Jackson's book as a follow-up.

  4. This book has some very useful information and is very easy to understand. I thought that the extra equipment/gear lists were a bit long and for myself some is not realistic to carry. If the information in this book is combined with other publications a good list of gear to carry on a 4 wheel adventure could be developed. The additional resources listed in this book were also very helpful. For new and experienced off-roaders this book is a useful tool.

  5. This book is great! Me and my Jeep are loving it. Once reading the little part from the page I knew I had to have the book to atleast finish that story.

  1. I was hoping for NEW pictures. All are previously posted! It looks like the book was RUSHED to publication.

  2. I bought this for my dad's birthday. His first car was a '51 Studebaker, and when he and Mom married, they had a '53 ~ the car my mom learned to drive. He enjoyed reading about the cars and the company. The pictures are great.

I liked that the book is broken down into timeframes. There are pictures throughout. It's a nice coffee table type book.

  3. Even if you thought you have learned everything about Studebaker, you willfind new info in this book. Not only a great coffee table book but also a great referance book.

  4. This is a super book for the Studebaker fan! Looking forward to the reaction of the person I'm giving it to this week! Sure he'll love it!

  5. This book is a comprehensive detail of the once mighty Studebaker Corporation. Lots of great pictures and insightful comments about this great marquee. I would give it 5 stars.
The book also arrived in perfect shape.
