3 comments about Gears & Gear Cutting (Workshop Practice Series).
  1. Good practical book, bit over my head but I will read until I understand fully. Worth having.

  2. This is the most informative book on gear cutting that I have ever read. Even though the "Machinists' Handbook" covers gears in more precise mathematical detail, this book was written to educate the hobby or amateur machinist on how to both design and make several types of gears (spur, worm, bevel). The author educates the reader on gear theory, and then on how to make the gears on inexpensive hobby lathes/mills. In addition, he covers how to make gear cutters inexpensively, and use them to make the gears. The language he uses is simple and concise, yet he covers gear theory enough so that the reader has advanced knowledge of the fundamentals necessary to design thier own gears and gear trains.

I have no negative criticism to offer of this book - it was exactly what I was looking for, and my money was well spent.

  3. Excellent book for the mechanical enthusiast! Well written, with enough drawing aids, it does not require high math skills! You must know a little bit of miling operations and machines to get the full photo of the book!

5 comments about How to Restore Your Harley-Davidson Motorcycle (Motorbooks Workshop).
  1. Real Harley men with eclectic taste who take pleasure in the ancient art of tinkering on mechanical things will love this book. Don't miss the rare Harley Davidson Novel "The Second Coming Of Age" by: Vedrine

  2. No doubt about it, this book is a must for the Harley restorer. There's info here that you just can't find anywhere else.

  3. This book has been around for a while, now. The pictures aren't the best, but Mr. Hatfield has done his homework on this one. Like he says, the book isn't perfect, but if you want to restore a H-D, up to 1964, you must have this book. It also has info that is relevant to later models. The one thing I missed, though is more # identification on parts Harley had made for them. I mean oem info, from Bendix, etc.

  4. This book is has very detailed information and is extremely comprehensive. There are many clear photos and diagrams. If you are thinking about restoring an old harley you should really get hold of this book before you get too far into it.

  5. WARNING do not buy anything from amazon they constantly bombard you with unwanted emails 2-3 times a day! Evan when you ask them to stop emailing,

5 comments about Big-block mopar engines.
  1. I have rebuilt many engines of many different brands, I have read MANY books on rebuilding these engines, and this book by FAR is the best book I have seen, It gives step by step instructions and it makes doing it SOOO easy, even if you have never picked up a wrench, with this book you can rebuild a Big Block Mopar. This book actually makes doing work fun and easy. This book is a MUST for any person who wants to rebuild a BB Mopar and build it right.

    Eric

  2. This is by far the best book on rebuilding big block mopars for novices out there. Step my step instructions tons of pictures and information. If you have never rebuilt an engine before i recomend this book

  3. Amazon indicated this item was in stock when I ordered it more than a week ago. I got an Email today telling me it hasn't shipped yet, but is "in process" and I will get it 23 Feb (2 more weeks). They also say I can't change my order now since it's "in process". I figured it's because they probably don't really have it in stock, so I went to the order page and they say there that it's in stock and would ship in 2 to 3 days (same as when I ordered). I'll never place another order with Amazon. They can keep the book and my money. They don't offer a link, phone number, or anything to contact their customer service, so I used this forum. I don't like being treated this way.

  4. I bought this for my brother for Christmas and he loved it. Thanks!

  5. I ordered this book for my son. However he is a mechanic and already knew most of the things that were in the book. When my husband told him what he was going to do to his car my son told him he really needed this book because it was really thorough and gave step by step instructions.

3 comments about Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970 (Chrysler).
  1. While I think Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell were two of the greatest masters in terms of American automobile design contribution, the third within a trimvirate of greatest designers would have to be Virgil Exner. Mr. Exner's work elicited people to engage in and be challenged by elevated design consideration and critical conversation.

In my mind, there was a direct link from Carl Breer to Virgil Exner, and that link most defined Chrysler's character apart from General Motors and Ford sensabilities. Chrysler was willing to take chances! I say this from a layman's perspective, as I have no background in engineering or automobile design. I am a student of what attracts me, and often in a common way. That said, I believe that Chrysler and DeSoto Airflow's of 1934 set Chrysler on a path that led to the remarkable hiring of Virgil Exner in 1949/1950. The combination of Chrysler's engineering emphasis and advanced sheetmetal was defining. Once the Airflow was born, and despite its failure at the box office/showroom, it set in motion a spectacular path of memorable achievement. When Chrysler hired Virgil Exner they redeemed the Airflow! The Airflow put on Chrysler's side of the ledger, if anyone is counting, one of the most recognized and famous automobiles in history! It is almost surprising that it did not sell well for all the celebration of the streamline emphasis of its time, and its proud grill was probably bested only by Rolls-Royce in terms of proud recognition! The Airflow was something for which to be proud!

Chrysler's obsession with advanced engineering was endemic, and complemented by European continental sophistications, where power and style were strongly associated, under Exner. Italian designs were among the most beautiful, historically. Virgil Exner made sure his footing was secure before he stepped too far into truly advanced concepts, but his K-320 and C-200 demonstrated he understood sheetmetal and how to honor the essence of the automobile in romantic ways. He romanced the classic and welcomed the future, stylistically, using new materails and applications. With techology, Chrysler's forte, at his side (and under the hood and elsewhere) Exner shaped designs that moved American culture forward in dramatic fashion. He adopted the best of two worlds, engineering and design, as the essence of Chrysler. Often thrilling, sometimes provocative and controversial, Exner brought WOW to the marketplace and to the driveways of average Americans. No longer were the thrills of great design the entitlements of the wealthy! He brought sophisticated design to the average man! You could hardly be around an Exner product and not notice, note, and discuss it! His work was as interesting as the best architecture or advances in music! He was a great artist who happened to work in sheetmetal! He was Wagner in steel bodies! He wrote an American myth of romanicism and heroicism on the assembly line! He documented his efforts with tail fins, microphone tail lights, grills that referenced radiators, and celebrated the wheel and its circle as one of the greatest contributions of man! He put spare tire, circular, references on rear decks and made them stylistic and sexy contributions to the rear body work! He chose colors associated with Greek myths; replete with symbolism; Athenian bronzes and golds, wholesome whites, sexy blacks, and fiery, tempting reds! He used anodized grills and hubcaps as if to adorn chariots and shields. Mylar stitching was put in fabrics! Crowns were embossed on seatbacks and Adventurers adorned hood medalians; DeSoto Adventurers! Imperial Crowns! Were these the chariots of Gods? No, they were vehicles designed to celebrate American culture, a culture that put ideas and concepts into production lines and into the ownership of kings queens of American households! "Chrysler Concept Cars 1940-1970" offers a special glimpse behind the scenes and into the studios and minds of those that helped create the successes of dream machines of the golden age of American automobile design. What a great book! Too bad it isn't in hardback! Posterity, you know!

  2. What a great book! Packed with information I've never read
and photos I've never seen. This is a totally indispensable
book for anyone who loves Chryslers or concept cars. Fantastic!

  3. This is an excellent historical review of Chrysler's concept cars. I had seen most of them, but not all in the same book. The text was quite interesting, too.

4 comments about Subaru Legacy & Forester 2000 thru 2006: All models (Haynes Repair Manual).
  1. to tell you the truth, it is quite lacking. important things like how to change the cabin filter were omitted completly. actual pictures on how to change spark plugs and many other reasonable chores on this car were not present. haynes really needs to do some work to get this manual up to par.

  2. Despite RnB's negative review of this manual, I went ahead and got one and it's fine for what I need. It's up to Haynes normal standard, i.e. some good clear parts, some confusing ones, some good photos and some unclear ones, but there is enough in here to get most jobs done without too much pain. I have used it to work on the cooling system successfully.

By the way, there are 2 pages on spark plug replacement, with photos, and the cabin air filter replacement is covered in the Subaru owners manual, so don't be put off. Subaru's are pretty bullet proof so you shouldn't need this too much, but it's always good to have a manual like this on the workshop shelf.

  3. Typical Haynes fair. For basic maintenance, this will help you get the job done. Don't expect this to be a factory manual.

This book is identical in content (word for word) to the Chilton manual. Their layout is slightly different. Buy one, but not both. Chilton seems to have larger diagrams, Haynes has more efficient print layout. Take your pick.

  4. Amazon's performance was trouble free and quite easy, but I certainly wish I would have been notified that my engine, a 6 cylinder, was NOT included in the book. I'll still hold on to it as a reference for other repairs, but I'm pretty erked that my motor is not covered in the book because that's the reason I bought the book. Oh well.

5 comments about Karting: Everything You Need to Know.
  1. well, saying the truth I've expected something much more concrete...the authors are just beating about the bush. You will learn all around and nothing about. No attention to the main thing in karting - driver. No driver technique or tricks described.
But maybe it could be useful for someone who just dont really understand what is karting.

  2. As someone who has been involved in go kart racing for over 25 years I disagree with the first review of this book. Book has some good info about the most important part of kart racing, which is kart chassis set-up, not the driver. In my opinion kart racing is about 10% motor, 10% driver and 80% chassis set-up, which includes the proper tires. If you get a kart handling right it is a breeze to drive it.
The book does have a section on driving as well as sections on motor choice, the history of karting, safety, kart tuning and more. For a beginner wanting to know about all aspects of kart racing, this book is as good as any and much better than most.
There are other books on the market that cover just the driving aspects of karting, if that is what you're looking for.

  3. My daughter has been racing for 1 year (won 1st place in her class last year), this the beginning of her second season. She is gaining experience, but this book provides some advanced info like running the proper line, taking corners efficiently, etc. It has excellent photography too that assists with explaining the info more clearly.

  4. This is a well written and illustrated book. If you have no or little knowledge of karting and kart racing, this book is a great start and a great overview. If you have been to a race or two and just bought a kart and want help making it go, this book is not for you.

  5. "Karting: Everything You Need to Know": while useful, the book did not meet my expectations. I expected a more detailed "Technical" publication. While this is OK for raw beginners, not recommended for someone looking for a more technical solutions & "Hints & Kinks" format.

5 comments about How to Build High-Performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s: Modifying and Tuning Gen III Engines for GM Cars & Pickups (S-A Design).
  1. The definitive source of modification information on the Gen III (and IV) small block LS series engines written by an authoratative author. At this writing (January 2007) there is no better book on these fine engines. I am an engineer and a former mechanic and I have learned a great deal about these engines. I am using some of this information to suppliment my GM factory manuals in the build-up of a 408 CID (6.7 L) Stroker version of the cast iron 6.0 L engine in my 2000 3/4 ton Yukon XL truck/SUV.

  2. Over all I like the book. I am very glad I bought it. Perfect when it came out a few years ago and most of the info passes on to the Gen 4. I'm looking forward to the next book coming out in Feb. 2007

  3. I've known Gen 1 small block Chevy engines all my life, but now am embarking on a streetrod project with an LS1 engine. This book is very informative and offers a comprehensive description of this new generation of Chevy motors, along with many details on performance enhancements and resulting dyno run numbers. A "must read" for anyone who is not yet familiar with all the variations of these LS motors, and for those who may be contemplating a "re-use" one of these LS motors. Paul

  4. Have to say I am new to the ls motor "club". My plans were to do an efi gen3 swap in my old truck. Bought this book looking to get some insight other than what I have read on the web forums. The book layout is good, and the pictures really give you an idea of what the author is talking about, not just agreeing and nodding your head, you really learn something.
Might not be for advanced ls gurus, but for a beginner like me, with a little understanding of motors and chevy small blocks, but have never r+r a motor or rebuilt one. I would Recommend this book to others.

  5. This book delivers what it says; great "how to" guide for getting more horse power out of your LS series engine. Easy to read and understand, lots of photos and plenty of tips. The book caters to the F-body as well as the corvette. How to remove the engine and make the upgrades; cam, heads, intake, and exhaust. I came away with a very good idea of how to accomplish these upgrades. The last chapter covers the various programing tools; diablo, LS1 Edit, etc., which you will need to take advantage of the upgrades it discusses. I recommend this guide as a great first step when you decide its time for more out of your LS engine.

  1. Not just another small-block chevy rebuild book - Mavrigian really shows the differences of the gen II chevy small block. Good pictures and lots of specifics. Buy it before rebuilding your LT-1 in your 92+ vette, 93+ F-body or B- body.

  2. A good how on the LT1 and LT4 motors. There are a few differences then the standard SBC. plenty of images of the whole rebuild process. Would been better if they were in color.

  3. Very Well Written. Images are very helpful. Step by step rebuild with pictures and every single piece showing what you need to do with what's also of the most importance to seals and etc. I would highly recommend this book to any LT1 or LT4 enthusiast rebuilding a motor.
