  1. Today Rodney Hill remains the best known plastician of this century. Perhaps no other book in engineering mechanics has done so much to propel a field as has Hill's Mathematical Theory of Plasticity. The book forms a beginning, a guiding force, for nearly all plasticity books in print today including my own.

3 comments about Chevrolet Camaro Pontiac Firebird: 1993 thru 2002 (Haynes Repair Manual).
  1. This book is helpful if you already know what you need to fix and where it's located. It was very helpful in showing how to remove the door panels to get at the power window motor. Unfortunately, when it came to find where the relay for the motor was located, I needed to get a Chilton's manual. You're better off with Chilton's if you need the detail.

  2. I drive a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 '96 which (currently) needs a transmission service, replaced distributor etc. This called for a good technical manual. Haynes Manuals are among the best. It's easy to follow with just enough info to get the job done! It really helped me out.

  3. This book is almost exactly the same as the Chiltons manual, just a lot cheaper. Same pictures, same author, same text, in the same order. The Chiltons is bigger, although that mostly has to do with more blank space. There may be a few minor differences, but there is no reason to own both that I can see.

It's still not very detailed. In some instances it will show photographs of the 93-97 version while explaining the 98-02 version. Sometimes it tells you what size tool you need, sometimes it doesn't.

It's still a useful reference guide for the home mechanic.

5 comments about Ford: Tempo/Topaz 1984-94 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. Spent good money for advise on repairs by purchasing and following outlined details in the Chilton's Ford Tempo/Topaz 1984-94 repair Manual -- ran into a major problem. I find that there is no way to contact Chiltons for direction!
Guess, I'll have to pull the engine in order to replace the water pump! Why did they not tell me this to begin with?
Their publications of yesteryear are far superior.
    An Unhappy consumer,

    M.P. Kreizenbeck

  2. Chilton's Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz Repair Manual 1984-94 is not for the average car owner. It is probably not even for the average mechanic. It is written in difficult language and at times seems to display unnecessarily complicated methods of performing simple tasks. From beginning to index it offers low quality information and instruction. There are too many diagrams and not enough photos. The photos available are poor. Overall this book was not very useful to me. I have used the Haynes manual for the same car and found it much more useful.

  3. I've used this book for nearly three years now, and keep wondering why I go back to it. (Actually, it's because it's the only Tempo/Topaz book I own.) I have found several major errors in the illustrations, usually due to showing a 2.0 engine setup as a 2.3 or vice versa. Some instructions, like how to change a water pump, are just plain wrong. Electrical schematics, particularly of the instrument cluster are sketchy to the point of being useless when troubleshooting anything other than a hard failure. I suspect that much of the text in this book was a quickie cut-and-paste job of info that pertained to these same components as installed in other Ford products. It really doesn't do justice to the model-specific problems of navigating the limited space of the engine compartment or tracing an intermittent electrical circuit. Proofreading was spotty at best. It's better than doing a repair job blind, but not by much.

  4. We were trying to replace the heater core, the instructions were foggy to say the least. Further repairs or maintenance just as foggy, its a good book if you have a lot of experience with repairing the vehicle and don't need a how to. Amazingly the "Ford Tempo Mercury Topaz 1984-94" book by Mark Christman, which is by the same company, was a lot better for repairs and maintenance. But neither book helped with replacing the heater core, we eventually used other resources for more ideas on how to actually get to the heater core to get it out.

  5. I had hoped that with the take-over of Chiltons by Haynes, that the manuals would get better. This one is still a piece of garbage! I'm replacing a water pump, and this manual is simply of no help to me! If I could get my money back for it, I would!

I never liked Chiltons manual, in that they were too general, illustrations are very poor, and their layout is a virtual disaster. Half of the information I need to perform the work I'm doing is not even in the manual.

    I wouldn't buy another Chilton's manual again......period!

5 comments about Ride Hard, Ride Smart: Ultimate Street Strategies for Advanced Motorcyclists.
  1. This book was an aggravation to (try to) read. I did find a few things that were interesting and that I sometimes need reminding of, but hardly two or three paragraphs can go by without Hahn's silly rhetorical questions, cutesy remarks and flippant attitude. (i.e. chapter 7-Riding at Night. Solution: Don't Ride at Night) A better subtitle might have been "Street Strategies for New/Intermediate Riders". Writers generally hate editors, but a good editor here might have helped.

I think it could have been a helpful read when I started riding almost 40 years and several hundred thousand miles ago, but I'd have to agree with some of these reviewers who seriously question the word "advanced" on the cover. At 60 years old, I buy these kind of books to enhance my skills and stay alive, but I think I could have accomplished those goals without wasting my money on this particular book.

  2. Pure and simple: if you want to learn how to ride, any other book on the market is better than this one. It is a complete waste of time and money.

  3. The author goes into great depth on his subject, but his focus is rather narrow. He discusses accident types, and their causes, making references to the Hurt Study. There are numerous photograph's to illustrate points, and these really do help. His message is really quite simple, but he goes over it in a lengthy process, which can bore you, if you get the message in the first paragraph of each chapter. As has been said previously, his chapter on riding at night is succinct: Don't! He gives ample reasons for this, in all other chapters, but in this chapter, he is very short, directing the reader to read two previous chapters on why you should not ride at night. I was a little surprised at his frank statement that nearly all (and he does mean, very nearly, as in, abolutely all) accidents are the rider's fault. After I kept reading, I finally got over my pride (I've had two falls, with two ambulance rides as a result), and I had to admit, there were things I could have done differently, in both cases, to avoid the falls.

The quality of the book is superb, with heavy paper, and quality printing. The binding is good, but the layout and color choices are sometimes annoying, as he has color graphics in the background of many pages, in colors which sometimes clash with the text colors, but it is still readable. I would have preferred less artistic styling on the pages, to make the text easier to read.

If you are looking for technical techniques for use on the bike, such as counter-steering, or other fancy moves, this book is empty. The author's approach is more esoteric, as he describes, for the most part, how heightened awareness skills are most needed. He discusses the layers of protection for the rider, with awareness, and distance, being the primaries, and the riding suits, and other crash-useful items, like engine guard bars, riding jackets with armor, and over-the-ankle boots, as the last layer of defense. This may insult, or even anger, some readers, but his basic premise of the rider being at fault in around 98%+ of all accidents, is sobering truth, if you can drop your wall of pride, and look at his point of view, objectively, detached from your prideful emotions. I recommend it to all interested riders. Cheers!

  4. I have read the entire book and have to say that 90% of it is about death and dismemberment. If you don't want your spouse to ride this is the book to give them. It will provide you with every reason not to ride a motorcycle. Lots of stats on injurys, deaths, dismemberment. Very little detail on the joys of riding a bike. I highly discourage buying or reading this book.

  5. This book is worth picking up as supplementary reading to Proficient Motorcycling. As another reviewer mentioned, I too found the book's discussion of the HURT report a long and unnecessarily involved. I also found the calculation of risk values a little too theoretical to be helpful. Nonetheless, I did get something out of each chapter (even the one that was one page long). Although I didn't agree with the author on all points, I found that he did impart some important ideas and mental models to help me ride with a greater awareness of what can go wrong, and how to avoid needless risk. It's worth picking up, and taking with a grain of salt.

1 comments about Diesel Engine and Fuel System Repair (5th Edition).
  1. This book is great at giving general knowledge that you can use on any diesel engine. I have done quite a bit of tinkering with gasoline engines and needed to learn specifics about diesels so that I could work on my own tractor and bull dozer. I'd already bought the manual on the dozer. It had lots of specific information about my dozer but overall was very difficult to understand. I couldn't even orient myself to the drawings.

When I got done with this book I felt like I could look at any diesel engine, large or small, and understand almost everything about it. It is very well written with great pictures and drawings.

This is one of the best book investments I have ever made.

2 comments about Mustang Restoration Tips and Techniques.
  1. The book is thick and full of pictures. That being said the pictures are so so, black and white. The technical information is and always will be the same but with the advancement in restoration methods and availability of parts the book doesnt really match the times. This book was written when a show car auctioned at 20,000 dollars was considered overpriced. Though it does have a lot of how too information some of it is tasteless like huge bubble fender flares and stripped cloth seats as upgrades. I can think of a lot of other restoration books for mustangs Id rather buy.

  2. This book is okay.Has various articles like how to buy a used mustang, replace panels, add fender flares, suspension swaps, car care, etc. For the price of under $8 its a bargain. There's enough info here to make it worthwhile.
