3 comments about Triumph, Twins and Triples (Enthusiast Color).
  1. The history on each bike discribed in the book is quite informative. The bikes we were specifically interested in are the Bonnevilles and there is no shortage of great pictures and descriptions. There are some great examples of restorations that go beyond showroom quality. We are especially fond of the 1977 Silver Jubilee edition.

  2. This is a fine book for basic Triumph history. I think the best feature are the excellent photos. This book is certainly worth the price.

  3. Extremely helpful to anyone who is restoring a triumph twin or triple. The colour photos are throughout and I thought the book was money well spent.

5 comments about VW-Golf/Jetta/Cabriolet 1990-98 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. This book is not up to the standards of any other Haynes book I've ever owned. It is more like the Chilton manuals-poorly illustrated- that created a market for the Haynes manuals in the beginning.

  2. This is a poor manual. In many cases, the instructions given even on basic repairs are incomplete (torque specifications missing, for example). It also contradicts itself - the text will say one thing, and the captions on the pictures say the opposite. For example, the instructions for replacing the air filter say that you don't need to disconnect any hoses or wires from the housing in order to remove the housing, but the pictures show you exactly what hoses and wires to remove. Regardless, I was unable to get the air filter housing open at all with these directions; I'm by no means a mechanic, but I think I should be able to change an air filter with a well-written repair manual. Also, the information about the rear washer system isn't detailed enough - I can't find the rear washer reservoir where this book says it is. Perhaps they left out some Golf-specific details and the description of this system only applies to the more-popular Jetta? Hopefully I'll find out soon, because I've returned this book and ordered the Bentley manual, which costs three times as much but will hopefully be complete and consistent.

  3. I have bought 3-4 Chilton's manuals for my Hondas over the years and was very impressed with them. This Chilton for our VW Cabrio was VERY poor. Luckily I bought mine used for $7. Manual gives ALOT of general information, little of specific to the Cabrio or Volkswagen. No relay layout and no specific cruise control information at all - two specific points of interest for me right now. This book will walk you through general topics like timing belts, brakes, and oil changes.

Where my Honda Chilton manuals were printed on newspaper thin paper to cram as much information as possible into 1 book, this one is printed on normal paper and is thinner than the Honda manuals. Book fails to address hardly any of the Cabrio specific items such as convertible top care, and top replacement.

Do yourself a favor, gather your courage and money and spend the $50 or so on the Bentley manual. You will be much happier with it. Anybody want a Chilton's manual for cheap?

  4. I bought this hoping that I would find enough information to repair a problem with a 98 Jetta. It's always a crapshoot with Chilton's - I was able to fix a 98 Jeep Cherokee with another Chilton's manual I had purchased for that vehicle.

I lost this time. The manual lacks in detail - the many sensors the car has are mentioned, but never described. There was no troubleshooting information for any of the sensors I was looking for. There is only basic coverage of the fuel injection system. I was able to find more on Google than in this book.

A waste of money for me. your mileage may vary.

  5. this book was in excellent condition. i couldn't find a book for that old of a car in any auto or book store.(1992) the books for other cars were about 40.00. mine cost 10.00 with s/h.

4 comments about Original Ford Model A (Original Series).
  1. An excellent book...well structured with accurate color plates. I would not suggest the book as a source for all restoration information, but it is truly a great supplement. As with any book trying to recapture history, there are some possible inaccuracies, but it was obviously painstakingly done and the photos represent a pretty good depiction of what the Model A was originally like when it rolled off the showroom floor. When we restore a car, we try to achieve a close approximation of original. An example...try to find pyroxilyn (sp?) material. It just isn't available nor would you want to use it. Vinyl is the fabric replacement of choice. This book can be used with Schild's earlier Restorer's Guide, the Judging Standards of MARC/MAFCA, Shop Service Bulletins, Orig. Owner's Manual, the Dykes Manual, Henry's Lady, Color Chip Chart, etc. When you do a restoration, you refer to many sources of information and this is one of the best supplemental pieces. Printing and layout are excellent...a quality piece for those with a love for Model A Fords. An essential addition to any automotive library, especially one that focuses on the Model A Ford. Buy it and you won't be sorry. Don't expect it to be a panacea for all restoration work though. That was never the intent.

  2. I have owned Model A Fords for the past 30 years so the book sparked an obvious interest. I truely enjoy reading and re-reading this book. I enjoy sharing this book with my young son as the photography is magnificent. I have many technical manuals and "standards" guides that just don't do Henry Ford's "A" justice like this book does. Money well spent.

  3. My husband is restoring a Model A and this book is a great reference for this project.

  4. Nice addition to all what is out there but as stated before a lot of mistakes in accuracies.
I have other books from Jim but this one was a little bit of a disappointment.

  1. Pictoral history and year by year overview of Shelby Mustang.
Lack of specific information conerning engines.
Hits the well known points that have been told before.
    Breaks no new ground.
    Excellent photos.

  2. If you're into Shelby mustangs then this book will interest you.A historical look through the years with good photographs do this book justice. Not a comprehensive book on these Mustangs.Owner's/would be owner's and enthusiasts will enjoy this book.Good value.Worth adding it to your collection.

  3. The book does a very good job of accurately describing the early history of the Shelby Mustang!!!

  1. Great manual as haynes always does. If you are a do it yourselfer or just want to learn all about your vehicle so you dont get hosed, this is the book. If you dont own alldata, this is the cheaper route and almost as good.

4 comments about Car Stereo Speaker Projects Illustrated (TAB Electronics Technical Library).
  1. Car Stereo Speaker Products Illustrated the moment I read the last word in the title: ILLUSTRATED. Finally a car stereo book that is completely illustrated with step by step procedures for all types of projects for cars, vans, and SUVs. I started reading this book with very little knowledge of how to build my own system, but now I feel confident enough to tackle my stereo project before me. Dan Ferguson really hit it on with this book! It's a must for any beginner car stereo enthusiasts!

  2. A very good book with detailed custom-made speaker projects for the front, rear (flush and surface mount) speakers and boxed woofers explained in clear and simple terms. The tips on making and cutting your own mount boards are especially useful.

However, if there is a future edition of this book, it would be best if it included simple wiring diagrams from the speakers to the amplifiers. Since for beginners, they might not know what to do or how to hook up the speakers afterwards. Otherwise this book would have deserved a 5-star rating.

p.s. To Amazon.com: The shipping schedule is excellent. I received this book in less than 2 weeks from the order in perfect condition.

  3. I like this book. It has a unique SUBWOOFER BIAMP FILTERED CROSSOVER project (It's easy to build, works very well) And it has a really cool Jeep CJ box, And you keep the back seat. Nice if your a Dad with little ones. Covers speakers from Madisound, Kicker and MTX. Note front and back speaker projects. Not just Subs. The people from Madisound I found to be very nice too. This BIAMP FILTERED CROSSOVER is not the same one as from his first book. (Killer Car Stereo on a Budget.)

  4. This book may be a little complicated for begginers into the audio world. Also don't be fooled by the name of the book, this book does NOT tell you how to design and make speakers, rather, speaker systems. As in, 4-5 speakers and a subwoofer. Although, this book does touch on why speakers do certain things, along with distortions, and all those little goodies that rob you of true quatlity! It will also help you on designing different types of enclosures for all audio.

3 comments about Building a Dune Buggy: The Essential Manual.
  1. Somes chapters of book aren`t focused in specifics dune buggy matters, but general car matters, like tools, safety and brakes. The best part is the chapter chassis shortening methods, very detailed; I felt a lack of information about the dune buggy body, like a shell plan or a path to build it, but if you don`t known anything about buggy building, this book can be a good start.

  2. Good book. Goes into heavy detail on how to shorten the pan. But doesnt cover every area as well. Chapter on tools could have been left out, chances are if your going to build a buggy you already have the basic tools. I already built a buggy (prior to purchasing this book) so most of the information I already knew. Good book to have just for the pan shortening info. I welcome any new books written on the dunebuggy subject. Written in UK english.

  3. A well thought out and informative book. My only fault with it would be that it is very specific to the style of dune buggy that the author builds. My own research has revealed there are lots of different paths to take in building a dune buggy (not to mention baja bugs, all terain buggys, etc). A chapter covering these styles and where to find information on them would be a nice touch.

Lots of great tips and tricks and how to avoid mistakes makes it very true to its title. Has left me very satisfied with my purchase.

2 comments about Equations of Motion: Adventure, Risk and Innovation.
  1. Bill Milliken is the father of modern vehicle handling and a god among racing engineers. In "Equations of Motion" Milliken details his exploits in aviation, auto racing and fundamental vehicle research. Growing up in 1910's Maine, Milliken 'ginned up a variety of motorized machines ... He was one of the first test pilots to fly at 40,000 feet in a pressurized B-17 ... After the war he raced Bugattis and Millers up Pike's Peak and helped found modern auto racing at Watkins Glen, ending upside-down half the time, but all in service of his day job -- revolutionizing the dynamic design of aircraft and automobiles. Milliken -- 95 at the publication of this book -- is an inspiration. Unlike most autobiographies, even of people with a fraction of his accomplishments, Milliken never preens or puffs. Instead he just tells it (and shows it -- hundreds of fascinating illustrations) with characteristic Yankee modesty and understated humor.

  2. The book is a wealth of information about Bill's life. The photos are good, and probably a number of ones never published. I was on a pit crew for him in 1958. He was truly remarkable then, and, as the book, says, still is remarkable.

A must for the aviation and sports car buff.

4 comments about The Big Book of Car Culture: The Armchair Guide to Automotive Americana.
  1. I just received my copy of this book and have found that it far exceeds my expectations. It is not just a sit down and read a bunch of boring history about cars book. It is loaded with short and interesting factoids on all sorts of miscellaneous auto-related subjects. I'm not a huge fan of classic cars but I am a fan of trivia and "useless knowledge" and I am just thoroughly enjoying this book!

  2. This has to be the ultimate bathroom reader or coffee table book for the trivia buff. Quick, fact filled reads on topics as diverse as Model T Fords, crash test dummies, Route 66, Rock City, Mustangs, GTO's and the evolution of the gas gauge plus fantastic vintage advertisements, colorful pictures equals 315 pages of never put down, water cooler conversation starting fun.

  3. There is something to the fact that too many people today seem to think the purpose of a road trip is to reach the destination, instead of taking the whole ride in as part of the package. This book is full of beautiful and novel places that used to lure travelers to briefly stop and gawk, like gigantic duck- or shoe-shaped diners, bizarre little museums that refuse to advertise what you're paying to see (like the museum to The Thing! which was also frustratingly not revealed in the book). Wonderful little independent food stands--like the one that invented the corn dog--and curio shops that once stretched along Route 66 have now almost all disappeared due to travelers' preference to taking the quicker interstate routes, replaced by giant fast food chains that have nothing to lose by the decrease in traffic.

Great attention is also paid to the evolution of the modern automobile, with sections dedicated to the independent automobile inventors that paraded out design after design up until the 1950s, when the government placed regulation on the industry. The fantastically beautiful Duesenberg (ever wonder where the phrase, "It's a Duesy/doozy?" comes from?) is profiled, as is a variety alternative-powered vehicles, 8-wheeled cars, the Checker cab company, and the Ford Model-T. There's also a short section on the Harley-Davidson company and its founders and "electric bicycles" in general.

  4. I loved this book. It is fun for those who like to go done Memory Lane.
