5 comments about Burial Brothers: From New York to Rio in a '73 Cadillac Hearse.
  1. This book has everything you could ask for from a travel essay. It's easy to read, humorous, suspensful and most important to me....recent. It took place in 1993. The one bad thing (keep in mind it's only 1) is that is speeds through the last week or so of the trip. Otherwise, I recommend it highly!

  2. The first 50 pages of this book were quite entertaining. But the remaining 150 pages were mediocre. Their trip through Latin America consisted mostly of getting drunk and picking up prostitutes. One bright note: It was interesting to learn of the difficulties the author encountered as he crossed from one border to another. However, I was expecting more from this book and was kinda disappointed.

  3. This book is about a man and his hearse, bound for Rio. Armed with plenty of alcohol and one sausage, he and two friends encounter everything from drunken prostitutes to corrupt politicians. Reading this is a must for any hearse enthusiast!!

  4. i loved the story line of the book. 3 guys with nothing better to do than get in a hearse and travel to rio. the encounters they had on the way were very funny to read about. i finished the book quickly because i kept wanting to find out what would happen next. i reccomend it to anyone who just wants some entertainment out of a book.

  5. This is one of the most entertaining books I have read in a while. Once you start you just can't put it down. It was very funny, had a great story line, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for sheer entertainment out of a book. It's not a how-to book, just a rollicking adventure story. I hope this isn't Mayle's only book!!

  1. I teach a reading methods course in a large university. In an attempt to show them how to weave literature into multicultural and social studies themes I read a significant portion of The Friendship to my students. You could have heard a pin drop. My students were deeply moved by Ms. Taylor's use of language and descriptions of the intensity of the white's hatred of the African Americans. Some of my students were really disturbed by this, and stated they would feel reluctant to read this book aloud in their future classrooms. However, I explained to them that the feelings of indignancy they felt toward the Wallace's, and other prejudiced whites in the story were precisely what Ms. Taylor was attempting to illicit in her writings, and would be exactly what we would want our students to experience. Ms. Taylor's writings are effective because they are so vivid, and obviously so real to her. Because of that, they become real to us.

  2. I read the book The Friendship and the Gold Cadillac. It is a great book! It is about black and white (race.) Also how people should be treated. When I read this book it gave me some feelings. The book is sort of a short book. It also made me want to keep on reading it. I think you would enjoy it alot!

1 comments about Cadillac XLR.
  1. This is certainly not one of those one model type of books that is based mainly on material from the standard press kits. On the contrary: written by John McCormick, a notable automotive journalist (CAR, Auto Week, Ward's Auto World), this book tells the complete story about the development of the Evoq prototype from 1999 into the production XLR as introduced in 2003. The XLR, already shown to the press at a preview at Pebble Beach 2000, was the first of the `Art and Science' style vehicles for Cadillac and presented a major `break through' for this American marque. Stylish, luxurious and sophisticated with lots of technical wizardry it received an enthusiastic reception by most of the American as well as the European press. Such a car, meant to revive the Cadillac brand, is certainly worth a book, and it's a good one. It is well written with excellent detail and beautiful photographs, on 128 pages of high-quality paper, including short interviews with the major players in the design, development and production stages of the XLR and these dedicated people are honest and open enough to not hide the problems and the issues they were facing during this challenging process. But they managed to meet those challenges and introduce a real beautiful car giving Cadillac a totally new design vocabulary which can carry them through for the next 10 years or more.
Chapters are well spread over Driving (a test drive by Andrew Frankel), Renaissance (the new Brand philosophy), Design (from Evoq to XLR), Engineering (testing at the Nürburgring), Interior (Bulgari and Eucalyptus wood) and Marketing and each of them give lots of detail. I really enjoyed every page of it. It is a valuable addition to anyone's library who is interested in American cars but for Cadillac enthusiasts it's a must! A most welcome tribute to a daring Cadillac design statement.

1 comments about Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71 (New Vanguard).
  1. "What started as a website project on the V100 Commando history by Richard Lathrop, the book Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71,is the first that presents the history of the V100. Starting as a privately funded prototype design that was patented in late 1962. Continuing with its first military customer, the Republic of South Vietnam Army used it in combat. And the US Army would follow later, recognizing the need for protection and firepower in a mobile package for its Military Police. The US Air Force would order a different version for its needs to protect its aircraft and bases from enemy infiltrators."

There are 39 Black & White photos and 7 pages color illustrations in this latest Osprey, New Vanguard edition.
These images show the changes to the basic V-100 vehicle as improvements were made from lessons learned in combat.

The first photos are Cadillac Gage's first armored vehicle design that was called the "Peacemaker" built on a Dodge W-300 frame, that did not go beyond the prototype stage. These are followed by design patent drawings of the "Commando" vehicle, and photographs of the early production prototypes. One photograph is at Aberdeen Proving Ground and several more of another vehicle that that I had photographed on display the Fort McCoy Museum in Wisconsin in 2001.

The following photos would show the differences in production vehicles that were sent to Vietnam. Later subtle changes in detail to the vehicles can be seen in more photographs and explained in the text.

The V-100 has an inherent amphibious ability and this is show in several photographs of the Guatemalan vehicles in a lake. Other than two photographs of the V-100 with a prototype 40mm grenade launcher turret that are laid out in reverse,(the negative is reversed) the photographs in the book provide an examples of the V-100 that would be of interest to vehicle historians and modelers alike.

In a future publication it would be nice to see more photographs of the V-100s that were operated by the US Air Force, though there are several that are can be viewed on the internet. Perhaps the next installment would feature the V-100s in service after 1971, several are still in service with U.S. police forces, and the development of the V150 and other variants that were produced and exported to other countries in the world.

Osprey's "Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71" is definitely a book for those interested in US Armored vehicles, Vietnam, and the origins of the US Army Military Police new vehicle the M1117 Guardian. To paraphrase a coincidence mentioned in the book,"...the first US Military Police to receive the M1117 was the 720th Military Police Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. Almost 30 years to the day they received the XM706, ...the M1117 mission requirements mirrored that of the V-100."
