  1. Lolita Hernandez does an excellent job of capturing the feel of working in a plant. Having worked in the same place during the same period of time, the stories bring back what it was like with crystal clarity. When I heard Lolita had written this book, I was initially interested solely because I had worked at Cadillac in Detroit. I wasn't sure anyone else would be able to relate. However, Lolita's story telling gift brings everyone - familiar or not - into the heart of what it was like on Clark Street in Detroit. Although each story somehow relates to the auto industry, the relationships and life struggles depicted apply to a universally broad spectrum. Worth the time.

3 comments about Haynes GM: Cadillac Deville 1994 thru 2002, and Seville 1992 thru 2002.
  1. This manual is too specific to just the car that was dismantled. The instructions were dead wrong for my 1997 Deville for door panel and window motor replacement. If I had continued trying to pry the door fasteners off, I would have broken the attachment hooks which replaced the press-in fasteners.

  2. I am very pleased that the manual is even newer than stated as mine covers up to the 2004 models. This manual covers all that I would be doing but does not go into detail on the 4.6 Northstar engine which is fine as I do not have the tools nor the knowledge to go that deep. A good manual for the novice.

  3. Unless you are going to buy an actual GM service manual, this is the way to go!

4 comments about Sleepy Cadillac: A Bedtime Drive.
  1. I borrowed this book from the library for my 2 1/2 yr old son. It's requested not only every night but during the day. The story is a delight to read and the illustrations wonderful, enchanting. I am looking forward to adding this to my son's bookshelf.

  2. This is definitely a bedtime book because it is sooo dull and boring to read. Neither my 21 month old nor my 4 1/2 year old took any real interest in this book. Skip it and pick one of Thacher Hurd's better books like Cat's Pajamas, Zoom City, Mama Don't Allow or Moo Cow Kaboom.

  3. My 1 1/2 yr old daughter absolutely loves this story. At first I wasn't sure it would fly, but we borrowed it from the library and we both quickly fell in love with it. We ended up getting our own copy and every night she wants to read it. The story stimulates the imagination. The sounds and rhythm make it a very soothing and sleepy kind of story.

  4. My son and I have loved this book since we got it, and I have purchased copies for gifts. It is definitely a night time read, slow and soothing, sending your little one off to have wonderful dreams. I wish we could find a toy Cadillac like the one featured in this story.

5 comments about Dancing In Cadillac Light.
  1. Dancing In The Cadillac Lights was a very well written book. I like the way that Kimberly Willis Holt describes her characters. For example, she gives a very good description of Jaynell. She tells that Jaynell is a tom boy and she is "not a girlish girl." The story is about a family that lives in a small town, Antler, Texas, and everybody in the town always hears everybody's business. Everybody in this family of four are the same, except for there is one oddball and that is Jaynell. One day Jaynell's grandpap becomes sick and has to move in with Jaynell and her family, and over the time that grandpap has to stay with that family, grandpap and Jaynell get a better bond that takes them closer together. So overall Dancing In Cadillac Lights was a good, even though it was short, but you could read it anytime.

  2. Kimberly Holt and Sharon Creech both write of strong young female protagonists living in rural settings with eccentric and endearing family members. Following Zach Beaver and Walk 2 Moons, when I compare Holt's LA Sky and Cadillac with Creech's Ruby Holler and Chasing Redbird, Holt wins--hands down. She simply has a better mastery of this genre.

Cadillac is just a delightful story; chock full of eccentric characters and humor in a quaint, rural setting in the year that Neil Armstrong walked the moon. Time after time, Jaynell, the protagonist, makes you smile and chuckle with her one line "zingers" that speak her opinions on everything from "white trash" to her coquetish sister, Racine. The humor is perfect for the primary audience of children as well as adults.

The best zinger of all occurs in the second paragraph of page 137. Jaynell's parents have just returned from a getaway weekend of reconciliation and romance at the lakeside trailer of Uncle Floyd. Jaynell tells the reader, "Mama seemed different...even Daddy seemed to have a lift in his walk...Uncle Floyd had been right...there was nothing catching a fine bass wouldn't cure." Children will laugh but adults will find the word play in the last line and howl!

There is much for children to experience and learn in this story. Don't miss sharing it with your students.

  3. I hated this book. This family has two girls, Racie and Jaynell. Rachie is a girly-girl and Jaynell is a tomboy. It seems like the only person who loves her is her grandpa. Her parents are just plain crazy. Mama repedily whipped Racie with a flyswatter because she ate a sugar cookie and the dad threatens to "tear up" their hides each time they do something he does not like. Once Jaynell said something out of turn and he grabed her shirt collar, nearly strangleing her, and pushed her rougly to her mama and forced her to apologize. Then Jaynell says that she will flench everytime she sees a flyswatter and she gets really scared when mama uses it on Racie. Her parents are just crazy. Then grandpa dies. Dad becomes even angrier and mama just looses it. I understand that sparking fear in a child's eye is a good thing. Children should be afraid of their parents-but this is crazy. Racie just ate one cookie and from that one mistake she recives a thrashing that is talked about in two paragraphs. Jaynell says that she could hear the repeted blows and it just sounded aweful. These people were crazy. This book is crazy.

  4. My opinion of this book is that it would be better off in the hands of a nine year old. In a way this book was a bit too juvenile for me. The hardest word was "hernia".
The story took place in Moon, Texas, where the roads hadn't been paved yet. Grandpap becomes ill. He moves with the Jaynell's family. Gradpap buys an emerald greed Cadillac. He teaches Jaynell how to drive. Grandpap passes away. They sell the Cadillac. Not exactly my idea of an interesting book. This book was very vague. I couldn't even find the climax. I would not recommend this book if there were others.

  5. Everyone thinks that Jaynell and Racine's Grandpa has gone crazy when they find out that his died, so Grandpa leaves the homeplace and moves in with his daughter which is Jaynell and Racine's mom. Jaynell and her grandpa are really close, but when grandma died she felt like grandpa had been yanked from her world. It was Christmas Break when Grandpa moved in so Jaynell wasn't in school, but both of her parents's had to work. Jaynell's dad told her to keep an eye on Grandpa to make sure he didn't get into any trouble, so Jaynell did. The next morning Jaynell did exactly what her dad told her to do. Grandpa got up and got cleaned up for the day, and then he left the house, so Jaynell followed. She felt bad about being so sneaky around her grandpa since they were so close. She ran up next to him and asked where he was going, but he did not answer. She followed him all the way when they finally arive at the cemetary. As they walked through the cemetary grandpa told stories of how the people had died. Everyday they walked to the cemetary together and looked at grandma's grave. They still didn't have a headstone for it. One morning grandpa got up and instead of walking to the cemetary he started heading to Longview, a town outside of Moon, Texas, when Mr. Bailey picked them up and gave them a ride to Longview. Mr. Bailey was heading there to bid on some old abandoned junk cars. Jaynell did not know where they were going in Longview, but she went along with it. When they approached a car deliership, grandpa said this will be fine, so Mr. Bailey dropped them off. The next thing Jaynell was riding in a cadillac with her grandpa, he woke up that morning and wanted to buy a cadillac. The next couple of weeks grandpa and Jaynell drove through town in the cadillac. Grandpa loved the cadillac. They made rounds everyday stopping at people's houses, including the Pickens. The Pickens were the poorest family in town, but everyday grandpa would stop by to get some cookies and coffee. One day when they arrived he didn't go in, instead Willie and Lily Belle Pickes got in the Cadillac. They asked grandpa if he would give them a ride in the cadillac. So he did, they drove around, and then arrived at the homeplace, and everyone got quite. Nobody had been to the homplace since grandma died. The house was bare, it looked like a ghost house. Lily Belle said she would love to live in a nice house like that. The next day Jaynell over slepted and didn't catch grandpa before he left in the cadillac. She went outside and couldn't help but notice that the Pickens were moving. They drove by in Grandpa's cadillac, he was driving and they were heading to the homplace. Come to find out Grandpa let them move in. That evening grandpa didn't come home, so Jaynell and her dad got in the pickup truck and drove down the road looking for him.......to find out what happened you can read the funny and exciting book, i loved it and i highly suggest that other teenagers read this book to!! Thank you for reading my book review over Dancing in Caillac Light!

  1. Bought a classic Caddilac and had no idea where to find parts. Now I can find even the most esoteric parts - new-old-stock, replicas, re-conditioned. Easy to use with nation-wide suppliers. The book is broken into major categories - Body and trim, Interiors, Engine and drive train, etc. Looking forward to using this guide for a long time.

  2. i bought this book as a gift for my dad so he could find parts for his 1938 caddy. it's helped him find original upholstry a new radio and other things. a wealth of knowledge!

4 comments about Cadillac DeVille, Fleetwood, Eldorado, Seville, 1990-1998 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).
  1. I liked the clear pictures and simple step by step instructions to maintain or do common repairs to my Caddy. Chilton is the best value for most repairs.

The Factory manuals: $104.00 to $40. each (there are two, One for the motor and transmission, and one for the Body and everything else)

The factory manuals are far more complete, giving very detailed information and description for every connector and screw.

Depending on your need to know, the Chilton manual may be enough.
It weighs about 18 oz., One GM manual weighs 108 oz.

I finally bought both the Chilton for most tasks, and the GM manual when I really needed more information for very uncommon tasks.

  2. If you buy this book like I did because you want to make relatively simple (but potentially very expensive) repairs yourself, say like fix an electric window, or replace a heater blower, or an automatic radio antenna but not its motor, or understand the vacuum system so you can trouble-shoot and fix vacuum-dependant things, I have one word for you: FORGEDDABOUDIT! This Chilton is pathetically superficial. A complete waste of time. Over-rated, over-hyped, and insultingly vague. Burn this!

  3. This book does not cover every aspect of the car. It does help though. If you buy this book you might want to get the Haynes version as well. Two books printed by the same company yet very different...odd. Between the two of them you can get almost all the info you need. Both books are severly lacking/or just plain wrong in the body interior section. If you are lucky enough to own the official GM Service manuals for your car and you are not a professional mechanic,The Chilton & Haynes books will help in understanding what it is the service manual is trying to tell you. Sort of like one of those dummies books that were popular not too long ago :o)

  4. I bought this manual for my husband because we were lucky enough to find a 1996 Fleetwood (the last year they were built). He already had an older Fleetwood, but there was enough different that we needed this manual. Not meant to be a comprehensive shop manual, this one is good for the occasional 'shadetree' mechanic. Lots of good, basic information and helpful hints, but don't expect to become an expert based on the content. Definately worth the price, though - in saved time and anguish!

1 comments about Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71 (New Vanguard).
  1. "What started as a website project on the V100 Commando history by Richard Lathrop, the book Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71,is the first that presents the history of the V100. Starting as a privately funded prototype design that was patented in late 1962. Continuing with its first military customer, the Republic of South Vietnam Army used it in combat. And the US Army would follow later, recognizing the need for protection and firepower in a mobile package for its Military Police. The US Air Force would order a different version for its needs to protect its aircraft and bases from enemy infiltrators."

There are 39 Black & White photos and 7 pages color illustrations in this latest Osprey, New Vanguard edition.
These images show the changes to the basic V-100 vehicle as improvements were made from lessons learned in combat.

The first photos are Cadillac Gage's first armored vehicle design that was called the "Peacemaker" built on a Dodge W-300 frame, that did not go beyond the prototype stage. These are followed by design patent drawings of the "Commando" vehicle, and photographs of the early production prototypes. One photograph is at Aberdeen Proving Ground and several more of another vehicle that that I had photographed on display the Fort McCoy Museum in Wisconsin in 2001.

The following photos would show the differences in production vehicles that were sent to Vietnam. Later subtle changes in detail to the vehicles can be seen in more photographs and explained in the text.

The V-100 has an inherent amphibious ability and this is show in several photographs of the Guatemalan vehicles in a lake. Other than two photographs of the V-100 with a prototype 40mm grenade launcher turret that are laid out in reverse,(the negative is reversed) the photographs in the book provide an examples of the V-100 that would be of interest to vehicle historians and modelers alike.

In a future publication it would be nice to see more photographs of the V-100s that were operated by the US Air Force, though there are several that are can be viewed on the internet. Perhaps the next installment would feature the V-100s in service after 1971, several are still in service with U.S. police forces, and the development of the V150 and other variants that were produced and exported to other countries in the world.

Osprey's "Cadillac Gage V-100 Commando 1960-71" is definitely a book for those interested in US Armored vehicles, Vietnam, and the origins of the US Army Military Police new vehicle the M1117 Guardian. To paraphrase a coincidence mentioned in the book,"...the first US Military Police to receive the M1117 was the 720th Military Police Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas. Almost 30 years to the day they received the XM706, ...the M1117 mission requirements mirrored that of the V-100."

  1. I found this book to be helpful in taking on small tasks such as doing your own brakes. In all, I would estimate this book saved me a few hundred dollars in repairs this year versus what I would have spent at the dealership or the local repair shop. (I was really upset when I found out how SIMPLE it is to replace disc brake pads) However, I would not use this manual for serious work, such as engine overhauls. In essence, this book is great for doing brakes, belts, spark plugs and minor troubleshooting. I would not depend on it for anything beyond such activities. Some of the chapters discuss engine overhauls and replacing struts. These are two pretty dangerous activities that the book sort of glazes over. They should have just left those things to the logic of "let somebody else seriously injure themselves doing this stuff".

It would have been nice for Haynes to include the Cadillac engine computer trouble codes, but you have to buy a seperate Haynes manual to get those.
