2. I discovered this only because my youngest cousin, who goes to Harvard, read it in a course and came home insisting that I read it too. I take a strong interest in my ancestry (I'm Italian American, the grandson of immigrants) and this book hit me right between the eyes. It is one man's search for the meaning of his ethnicity and all the goodness that comes with it, before it all slips away. Tonelli writes in a funny, quirky, totally absorbing style that's never dry or ponderous. But he's writing about some of the most deeply meaningful, even sometimes sad aspects of being part of a genuine community in a time when community in American seems (to me) to be on the wane. This is the kind of book that could (and should) have become a minor classic of literary nonfiction, and also a book that every ethnic American would want to read, but I gather it did not back in '94 when it came out. But if you can find a copy today, grab it fast and get ready for a thrill.

1. In the 1950s and 1960s GM had an over 50% + share of the market place in the USA. It was so successful that there was the constant threat of anti-trust action to break up the company. Looking through the book, BUICK 1946-1960 PHOTO ARCHIVE, one can't help but notice how aggressively styled these cars were. Whether or not one appreciates these chrome laden land yachts today, one has to consider GM at least took a chance by making cars that stood out from the crowd, and thereby enjoyed great sales success. Unlike the GM line up of today, all of which unfortunately seem to be patterned after the late not-so-great Chevrolet Cavalier, which should have been named the Cadaver. GM in the past was run by automotive stylists and engineers, with the result that it produced world class cars that were tremendously popular. Today GM is run by MBA cost accountants who do not appreciate things automotive, and the result is a boring line up of look-alike appliances. GM has already euthanized Oldsmobile; Buick and Pontiac will likely meet the same fate if GM cannot look to it's past to find a plan to right itself.

1. This was not as good has previous Chiltens Manuals I have purchased. It is however a great timesaver when I need to try to repair items such as the dash illumination.



2. This book is generalized for several different makes of GM cars. Sometimes the car you are working on will be slightly different than the pics in the book. I use it as a general guide to determining if a repair job is feasible by myself or if I need assistance or a professional mechanic. For the $ it is worth picking it up.

1. The book has excellent picture references and well thought out instructions. Wiring diagrams are well done too. The only draw back is it offers no vacuum hose diagrams. I believe it is a good book for the basic home mechanic.



2. I often found the manual more frustrating than helpful. Pictures are numbered but the number is rarely used (see illustration rather than referring to the number). A popular engine during the time span designated was the GM 2.5 L OHV. No complete picture of the engine, only partial views in the manual. The PCV valve explanation on page 1-25 is incomplete (see Chiltons). The organization of the manual could be better. A great manual for a GM mechanic but not for the back-yard mechanic. A good supplement to the Chilton's manual.
