  2. I discovered this only because my youngest cousin, who goes to Harvard, read it in a course and came home insisting that I read it too. I take a strong interest in my ancestry (I'm Italian American, the grandson of immigrants) and this book hit me right between the eyes. It is one man's search for the meaning of his ethnicity and all the goodness that comes with it, before it all slips away. Tonelli writes in a funny, quirky, totally absorbing style that's never dry or ponderous. But he's writing about some of the most deeply meaningful, even sometimes sad aspects of being part of a genuine community in a time when community in American seems (to me) to be on the wane. This is the kind of book that could (and should) have become a minor classic of literary nonfiction, and also a book that every ethnic American would want to read, but I gather it did not back in '94 when it came out. But if you can find a copy today, grab it fast and get ready for a thrill.

5 comments about The Confession of O. J. Simpson.
  1. It was obvious that the author didn't care much for OJ. I did enjoy the book for what it was suppose to be - fiction. However, I did have to keep reminding myself that it wasn't real. But it makes me wonder... does the author know something he's not telling?

  2. I had promised myself that I would never read another book about O.J. Simpson after finally finishing Schiller's epic examination of the case, but then I chanced upon David Bender's book, THE CONFESSION OF O.J. SIMPSON, at a library sale yesterday and thought, "Oh, why not? It's for a good cause." I opened to page one, chapter one, daring Bender to win my interest. He made short work of it, totally hooking me before I had even made it all the way to page two. The more I read, my commitment to the book grew stronger and I found myself wanting to encourage others to read it, too (which explains how I ended up here, writing this). The O.J. that Mr. Bender presents is far more real to me than was the bigger-than-life O.J. described by friends, decried by enemies -- the O.J. who hawked rental cars, appeared in movies, excelled at football, chased women, and became the daily staple of TV news shows, talk radio, magazine and tabloid stories, non-fiction books, and heated chit-chat (at school, the office, the beauty salon, over the backyard fence). I urge anyone who followed the Simpson case, whether casually or compulsively, to pick up this book and see the remarkable result of the author's imagination and talent. David Bender has done what saturation-level media coverage could not achieve, despite years of trying: he has fashioned a flesh-and-blood man from a cultural icon -- and, in the process, he has at long last brought the Simpson matter to a satisfying conclusion. In other words, Bender's O.J. is a fictional character who seems to have stepped out of the headlines just long enough to tell us the truth. Perhaps that is why Bender has managed to accomplish what the legal system attempted (but failed) to do: he has conjured up a version of the O.J. Simpson story that satisfies an interested public's need for closure. Until Bender's book appeared, it seemed there would never be a fitting end for the Simpson saga, but now Bender -- with plausibility and intelligence -- has proven how wrong that assumption was. Bravo, Mr. Bender!

  3. This is bad writing. I knew I was taking a risk when I picked up the book for $1 at a local book sale, and I'll admit early that I usually read nonfiction. If this is a sample of what I've been missing, giving me a dictionary over books like this anyday.

The author took a storyline, filled in a few holes with typical crime-writing, and expected accolades for his creativity. Instead, upon finishing the book (an easy hour and a half read) one is left feeling the story was incredulous, light, and offensive to the memories of two victims and their families.

It is a shameless ploy to gleen money from this tragedy, and I am embarrassed and ashamed that I wasted my time with it.

This might very well be the worst book I have ever read.

  4. When you read this book you can tell the author doesn't have much of a love for OJ Simpson; however, when you read this book you get a hint that maybe... just maybe this author actually got his story from OJ himself.

It's one of them OJ books you can get through quickly while believing every word is actually OJ's. Hmmm, makes me wonder.

  5. I must admit that I had mixed emotions about this book as it seemed exploitive of a serious crime in nature. Based on the positive reviews of other readers, I decided to give the book a chance. I was glad that I did because I could not put the book down.

The premise of the book is based on O.J.'s willing acceptance of Fred Goldman's offer to return the civil settlement for a confession. In theory, the constitution would prevent O.J. from being tried again under the double jeopardy statute. On course, this statute is rarely tested with an actual confession. The main character Sam Roosevelt has O.J. walk into his life to make the agreement with Goldman. While the book is slow to get to the actual confession, it is a quick read. While the twist at the end of the book took away from the overall story, I thought the story was well presented.

I am particularly fond of the pop cultural references scattered throughout the book in the form of Saturday Night Live references and O.J. seeing Courtney Love and thinking she is hot. I also liked the touch of O.J. doing coke in the bathroom before his confession. The author makes O.J. out to be a vulnerable character whose jealousy and thirst for attention caused him to murder his former wife. I think this matches the public concensus well.

This book made me want to go back and review the facts of the actual case to test the plausibility of the story. When reading this book, one must keep in mind that it is fiction and the confession is hardly accurate. But you have to wonder how close to reality it might be?

  1. This manual has all the info needed for your A/G-body Buick. It has very complete info from the V6's to V8's, olds V8's, Olds diesels (V6 and V8), and the turbo 3.8 V6 found in the Grand Nationals and T-types. It has pages and pages of vacuum and electrical diagrams, troubleshooting ECM codes, everything. About 1 1/8" thick of manual. Worth every penny!

  2. This one is ok, but if you are gonna spend money, get the total care care one...

  1. Haynes says this book is a documented total rebuild of one of these cars, specifically, a 1988 Buick SkyHawk Custom equipped with the Chevy 2.0L engine. If you're looking for information and directions on rebuilding one of these cars, don't look at this book.

The coverage of 'special' things is limited or nil, especially the Chevrolet 2.0L 4Cyl turbocharged engine that was installed in the SkyHawk Sports. They briefly cover only the fuel rails, and don't even mention the turbocharger itself. But if you need a crash course in repairing the 2.0L 4Cyl, or working on the rest of the car, you won't find an easier to use book. :)
