1. This isn't a how-to manual because it doesn't go into repair and restoration enough to get your hands greasy. What this book IS, is a wonderful guide of what accessory/part is appropriate for each year BMW motorcycle. The photos are extensive and very educational in leading you to a complete vintage BMW with accessories appropriate for the year of your bike. The author, Roland Slabon, is president of the Vintage BMW Owners, Ltd club world-wide and editor of the club newsletter.

1. "this is the book that most people buy when looking at 2002s for the first time or need a refresher"

   They offered to get me one but didn't rate it, but I guess it's got to be at least a 3-4 stars.




2. The book helped me imediately with heater wiring configuration. I would like to see complete wiring diagrams aas my restoration requires electrical as well as structural effort. The chilton repair guide has very incomplete wiring diagrams on the '02.



3. This is a great book for both the first time '02 owner and the the long time '02 owner! This book is very clear and thorough and gives great tips on how to restore your beloved '02. Some time times this book is not technical enough though and if you are looking for a book with engine breakdowns and wiring diagrams you should get the BMW 1602 and 2002, 1959-77 (Haynes Manuals). I recommend buying both these books to get the best of both worlds!



4. Generally well-written and helpful. However, I found the chapter on body restoration to be somewhat lacking in illustrations/diagrams/photos. I'm an experienced welder/body repairman, but, have no BMW '02 experience. I had hoped to get a better idea of what I'd be getting into, time-wise, to help in planning a restoration. Having some illustrations/drawings/diagrams showing how the rusty panels came together, when new, would have been helpful.



5. For all your do it yourself-ers out there... the BMW 2002 fix it book is pretty good. Gave the text away with the 1971 BMW 2002tii I sold as a bonus.

1. This is a must read for anyone owning or interested in buying this classic BMW airhead motorcycle. The book is very informative and a good read.



2. Great history on all BMW sport models.Exellent photos.I have owned an R90S for 30 years and thought I knew it all.How wrong I was! Great reference,great read.



3. For those who want to know details about this bike, this is the ultimate source of information. It has very nice pictures too.



4. Just finished absorbing this fine book. Falloon manages to convey relevant, even detailed, information in an easy-to-read style. Well-done assortment of photos, including earlier, concurrent and later BMW models. Even the requisite "pre-history" section was interesting and relevant. I was especially pleased to see the inclusion of the entire -S model lineage, right through 1984. The author, to his credit, avoids the usual gushing praise of many enthusiast books, giving kudos where deserved and critical observation when needed. Contributions and quotes from important folks like Reg Pridmore, Bob Lutz and Udo Gietl are used sparingly, and thus effectively. I thoroughly enjoyed all 125 pages. I noticed a couple of typos, which was odd in such a gorgeously crafted book. The best of the Collector Series--and a keeper.

1. The book contains hundreds of photograhps of mainly the BMW R12 and some of the R75. All photographs are taken in Worldwar II and represent valuable historic information on how these bikes were used in combat. It also reveals the strategies being used by motorcycle companies and shows some of the human suffering of this era. Furthermore it contains valuable technical information, drawings and exploded views of the BMW R75. Highly recommended to anyone interested in this part of the history or for those who are involved in BMW R12 or R75 restoration.

5 comments about BMW: Coupes and Sedans 1970-88 (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual).

1. Well produced, with excellent photos and graphics - particularly for US models. Doesn't cover twin-servo brake systems as fitted to some European 2002's - I have one of those! To be fair to the publishers, they do state that it is intended for US market cars. Very thorough and repetitive on workshop safety. Good value - a very big read and a good source book.



2. This is typical of a Chiltons. Very long on warnings concerning handling antifreeze and motor oils, then falls flat on it's face in the index department. I have not yet figured how to find anything in the index. And the comments driving you to seek help from a dealer are not what I bought the book for. I KNOW how to change oil and plugs, what I needed was help in troubleshooting a transmission problem. And there was no help there. To me, not worth the 17 bucks



3. This book has been extremely helpful with schedule and preventive maintenace and repairs done by the professionals, because it enabled me to purchase various parts myself wholesale or refurbished which made the service much, much cheaper. I'm still in search of a owner's manual though, for a 1987 BMW 735i



4. There are hardly any pictures of where exactly things are. Also the BMW 2002 single barrel carb is quite a different machine than the BMW M6. Unfortunately the "manual" attempts to cover all models at the same time.
   
   They would have done more of a service if they had made more detailed manuals on each series. My 1969 BMW 2002 Owner's Handbook (with US suppliment) is more detailed than this "manual".
   
   Don't buy this.



5. How the hell would I know I still haven`t recieved it yet,any ideas on when hmmmm!

1. As usual, very comprehensive coverage of repairs and maintanence.



2. Covering too many models and years to be much use. Poor quality pictures.



3. This is useful for doing simple things like changing oil or removing lug nuts. If you are doing any serious work or disassembly, you will need something with a lot more substance. There is probably some good information and diagrams in this manual, but I haven't found them yet.
   
   I would go online and by the BMW Tech CD's, if I were to looking into this manual. I bought this manual and had to look for something with better technical material anyway.



4. If you need to find the engine... or know whether your battery is under the hood or in the trunk of the car... then this is probably the right manual for you - but as with most Chilton manuals, it covers too many different cars too superficially to be any real use. It's only marginally more helpful than the owner's manual that comes with the car. Poor value. Haynes is much better. Robert Bentley (though costly) is far and away the best.

1. Looking for a used BMW? Start here. While not uber-detailed from a technical standpoint, the information is well- organized and well-presented with fine photos. I refer to the book often as a memory refresher and "what to look for" reminders. That doubles its value in my mind: A buyer's reference and later a model reference -- a keeper for me! Remember -- it's current only to the early 2000's.

1. This must be where BMW improved their manuals from. 1000% better than 1997 BMW manual, although upgraded newer manuals like Clymer.
