- I was hoping that this camera was good enough that I could throw away my SLR and stop paying for film and developing. Unfortunately, after using it for four months now, I can say that it's not that good.
Here's the problem... the pictures all come out blue. The only way to correct for that is to use a flash, and then all the pictures come out in stark glaring color. It is impossible to get good light balance in the photos. And the camera always insists on using the flash, even when outside. Other problems include time -- You can't just point and click... the camera has to think before taking the picture, so you ALWAYS lose the candid shots and instead get pictures of the backs of people's heads. Sometimes it can take up to ten seconds before the camera actually takes the picture... and I have no idea why. A similar but unrelated problem is disk-access. After you take a picture, it has to save it to the disk, and that can take five or more seconds, in which time you can't do anything. On the good side, the camera captures an incredible amount of detail. You could probably print poster-sized pictures and still not see any pixelization. It is remarkable. To sum up: If they can fix the color/light problems and processing time problems, then we might have a winner. Until then, I'll have get used to pictures of the backs of people's heads, in blue.
- I started out with a Kodak digital camera and when I decided to upgrade and chose the Mavica CD300 I'd have to say it was the best decision I've made photography-wise. The resolution is enough for just about any situation I've printed 8x10 photos that you can't tell from regular photographs. I don't even use my SLR anymore. I read complaints about the size.... I think the size is very comfortable. Not really any different than my SLR. If there were any changes, I'd want it to have more optical zoom. A definite MUST Have if you want a Good digital camera..... I recommend it to EVERYONE!...
- I've had this camera for 8 months and the drive has gone out. Sony will replace it under it's parts warranty, but I have to pay a minimum of [money] for labor. This is not my idea of a decent warranty. I've done absolutely nothing to break the drive, I consider this a fault with the camera. I don't feel that I should have to pay the money on a [money] to have the drive replaced. Sony has not seen things my way...yet. I DID like this camera, found it easy to use, took great pictures, the zoom was great, and it was super easy to download pictures. I am not at all happy with the service or reliability.
- Unlike what is suggested in the features ---- this is not properly supported for mac machines!!!
THIS IS MAINLY DOWN TO THE SIMPLE FACT THAT VIRTUALLY ALL MACS HAVE EITHER DRAWER OR SLOT LOADING CD DRIVES AND THE MINI CD FORMAT NEEDS TO BE SPINDLE LOADED - LOADING A MINI CD INTO A SLOT OR DRAWER LOADING DRIVE IS LIKELY TO DAMAGE THE DRIVE!!!! PS. this will also affect VIRTUALLY ALL Desktop PC Drives Having said that should be good for those with spindle loading cd drives new iBook and most PC laptops or those with external drives designed for laptops
- This is a great camera in most respects. It's hard to take a bad shot -- as someone who wouldn't be able to deal with all the adjustments on a real SLR, this seems to be the next best thing... good lens but the camera does the work as though its a point-and-shoot. I've taken 1000s of shots with it. Battery life is fine. CD as storage is rather convenient.
BUT, my complaint is the lag times. Power on lag, shutter lag, and shot-to-shot lag. It's painful to think of all the shots we've missed waiting for disc writing, or power on, or slow shutters. The Burst 3 mode is a silly answer -- just doesn't work right in practice. You can't even see the subject to know if you're still lined up once it starts bursting. Net: this is an ideal camera for non-moving situations... sunsets come to mind. Not so much for taking shots of kids, which I do.

- This camera is really easy to use and you can take great pictures with it. I bought it two years ago and it still seems to be a good value for the price I paid. One of the features that I liked is the fact that it can record videos. I was thinking about buying a camcorder, but decided to buy this one instead. The quality of the video is Ok, not great. Currently, cameras with higher resolution can record better videos.
Overall, I recommend this model to anyone who wants to buy a digital camera.
- i've owned this model for three years and it JUST gave out on me. The camera takes great photos, but sometimes stalls when you want to take that instant photo, so a lot of the "kodak moments" end up being staged since you have to wait around for shutter and all the redeye flashing to stop.
the camera plugs into a computer nicely with the USB cable, making transferring photos a snap.
The power source for the camera is a specific battery which doesn't last long, which was a problem on weeklong trips away from the charger.
The shutter mechanism failed about one year into usage.
But the thing's a workhorse, as i've taken about 1000 pics with it over the years. good starter camera
- I have had this camera for almost 4 years and it has been amazing up until recently. When I first bought it, I had researched many different styles and found this to be the best. It took great pictures under most conditions, however I have always had problems taking rapid shots and especially with taking pictures in low light. Overall I would have recommended this camera to anyone. 1000 pictures later, this camera has failed me. The pictures now come out blurry, if they take at all, and the batteries are giving out on me. I am very dissapointed with it and while at one point, it was the smallest and most popular model, now I think any consumer would be better off with a different model. Think twice before purchasing this camera, I think there are better options out there.
- I've had this camera for four years and taken over 4,000 pics with it. Until now all I could have said about this camera was how fantastic it's been, well it's all past tense now that it's dying. I went to an afternoon wedding recently and all though there was plenty of natural light ALL of the pictures turned out too dark and blurry, also the lag between shots has increased.
In a fit of anger last year I threw it against a stone wall and it was only in a flimsy canvas bag, not a scratch or blip, the camera is tough as nails. It has been in my handbag from the day I bought it and has been through everything with me, I will be sad to say good-bye and nervous that the next one is as good. I'm now buying the Sony DSCT30.
The 128 memory card on the highest resolution will hold 100 pictures and the rechargable battery is the only way to go, it lasts 120 minutes of on time or a month in the off position. No need to keep buying/carrying batteries.
The movie mode is a bit grainy but it's handy for quick vid snippets of a loved one's voice or smile.
If you're looking for a basic starter camera for not much money go for it, but don't pay more than 100 pounds, try ebay.
- I've had this camera for a bit over 4 years. It was with me in Hawaii, Peru, Germany, and all over California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah. It took awesome pictures. When I printed out pics, people always asked me "and that little camera took these pics?". Yes!
The short-comings: there was always a delay in certain conditions, which I lost many good pics to. Sometimes the shutter only opened halfways, with me noticing only later when I downloaded the pics - pics lost forever!
Battery life was very very poor, drove me nuts.
So now it finally died. Bought new battery, nothing, will return battery.
I loved this little camera, despite its short-comings, it will be hard to replace with another compact.

- I give this camera 5 stars simply because of the simplicity of the camera and the clarity of the images. If you are in the market for a good low light camera, then look elsewhere for a higher ended model. But for your typical, everyday usage it is brilliant. I kept the 4 meg Memorystick as it will hold upwards of 60 640x480 images. I employ the camera to take pictures for emails and family newsletters. Dump them using the USB connection into your computer and fill it up again! There is nothing simpler. I purchased this camera nearly a year and a half ago and still use it everyday... no kidding! I owned two JVCs previous to this Sony and do not even know where they are now. This is a super product.
- I love Dsc-s30 digital camera it took pictures really clearly
Because I compared to others same level camera no one I like it. The screen LCD is so greatest to view the pictures I took. It can cover to protect the LCD screen. Nice looking ,good style. But it can't take motion MPEG movie So ......I bought a new one I still chose Sony dsc-P50....Ha Ha Dsc-s30 still my best one. S30 battery life is longer then s-50 . It also can play MPEG movie in Dsc-s30. Greatest I love it...
- i think the dsc-s30 is the best digital camera sony has made. its the only one i know of with the flip screen.
- I have enjoyed this camera a lot and have taken consistently great pix that my friends with higher pixel-depth cameras (and what doesn't have more pixels at this point?) envy. The flippy swivelly viewfinder is the most useful feature I've ever had on a camera hands-down. I find it very hard to ever buy a camera again, that doesn't have one.
However, I really hope there's an eighth circle of hell devoted solely to the jackass who invented, for lack of a better term, the "soft" on/off button. For a hundred years the on/off button obeyed you. It turned something on or off at YOUR whim. There was no equivocating. Now, your computer or electronic device thinks about it for a while and without explanation refuses to fire (turn off, take the picture...) because your not in the righ mode, the camera's "brain" decides it not in the right mode, or that I wouldn't like the picture I'm trying to take. Who knows why? Now no matter how much you want the camera to take your freaking picture, at best your volition gets an ambiguous response; the camera may or may not obey. Most electronic cameras not have this heinous funtionality.
Can you think of any more worhtless time to not obey you, than when you need a specific time-based composition that will never recur? I can't tell you how many shots I've missed because of this idiotic feature. Really! A red-hot poker up the butt for eternity is not too much to ask, for the inventor of this modern scourge. I recently threw this camera across my car when it missed it's final shot that could not be recaptured.
- I've had my Sony DSC-S30 Digital camera for probably 5 years now. This has been a great camera for the cost and it's capabilities. I've taken many outstanding, crispy colorful pictures with it.
The rotating flat screen viewer is amazing - not aware of any other cameras featuring this. The on screen settings are simple to use, the feature to quickly review photos is great. You can easily change modes, and settings and really do a lot with this camera. It is very versatile and easy to use. I only had to refer to the manual once. I did buy the extra, larger-capacity memory card, and can easily take over 100 pictures on a long day trip.
The camera is USB cable equipped and is simple to use with any USB computer, or small photo printer. I've gotten TONS of use out of this camera. I can't say enough good about it. They are no longer in production but I highly recommend it if you are thinking of buying it used. I have always been very pleased with Sony products.

- I love this camera, I use it alot and think it is fantastic. Love the features and the ease of use.
- Sony Made great strides with this camera. I own it and totally recommend the quality the easy of use and the size.
- I am a beginner at using digital cameras. Actually I know enough to be dangerous!! The Sony MVC-FD83 camera arrived exactly as described; excellent condition. I've found it very easy to use. I prefer the simplicity of using a floppy disc rather than the memory stick. Take the disc out of the camera and pop it into the computer and PRESTO - I've got GREAT pictures to print or email. No more picture developing costs! I contacted the seller by email before purchasing the camera. David answered all my questions promptly and in great detail. I HIGHLY recommend him. It was a pleasant shopping experience. Thank You Amazon.com and Thank You David.
- We bought this camera a couple of years ago and we are very pleased with it.
It has a long zoom and can get clear, focused pictures of things yards away. It can take a minute of digital video with great picture quality. You do not need to worry about memory sticks or any special slots in your computer. You simply pop in a floppy disc, take tons of pictures and pop the disc in your computer. Instantly, you have great picture. Small and lightweight. Has great effects such as sepia, B&W, Negitive, and solorize. You can do all kinds of effects with your sixty seconds of movie. There is a flash and a giant backlit screen. You can do slideshows. Works seamlessly with any picture, movie making and writing program. I reccomend buying the Mavica camera. It was the original and first digital camera ever made.
- I needed a simple-to-operate camera for my business that allows a different disc to be used for each customer...works wonderfully!

- I have always had a preference for Sony electronics, so when I decided to purchase a digital camera, I started researching Sony first. I've had my camera for a year now and can honestly say I would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a reliable, easy to use, excellent picture quality digital camera.
The pop up menus are easy to reconnoiter and adjust, but do take the time to learn the features before you venture out on a picture taking trip. Depending upon the resolution, I got 10-20 pictures on a 3.5 floppy. I am now looking at purchasing a memory stick to avoid having to deal with so many floppy disks. The case it comes with is adequate but really only large enough for a few discs and the camera so had to pack to charger unit in another bag. I took the camera on vacation last year to Canada. As long as I charged it up each evening I was set for the next day. If you care to see the picture quality, feel free to visit some of my online pics at: http://www.tmfwebdesign.com/vacation/ This camera also takes up to 15 second moving pictures. This gives you a little bit more in terms of 'memories', but it is not a video camera, so please keep that in mind. I recommend this highly.
- With this camera u can take 5-60 second mpeg videos but at a pretty good quality. With a photo printer ive been able to make excellent 8x10's also using the software that comes with the camera. (Arcsoft Photo Studio v2.0) The only real downside to this camera is the quite slow recording speed using memory stick. But if your willing to spend more towards a speed memory stick you will be very happy with this camera. It also has a very high speed just using plain old floppy discs. This camera has a load of great features and is very good overall
- hello dear
the sony one i have - MVC-FD85 - is 1.3MP and X6zoom , but in amazon.com shown as 1.2 MP and 3Xzoom !!!!!! the Camera is Excellent ...thanks
- This is a great digital camera.
- I've had my Mavica MVC FD85 camera for over five years. I bought it for use in my construction business to take pictures of my work and also for personal use. A digital camera doesn't get any easier, simply pop-in and out a floppy disk from camera to computer. I use it to store, share and email; it's so easy because you don't need any kind of adapter, cable or memory card port to transfer picture files and the image quality is ok too, its very sturdy also; I will buy another if this one ever fails...

- I love it. Such clear pictures, I can take pictures inside most of the
time without the flash on. It is the easist camera I have used.
- I just love this camera. If you want big prints of glossy pictures then buy something else. If you're happy with 6x4 prints, but your main focus is on web content then this the camera for you. Photos, movies, sound recording, automatic creation of email photos - all fantastic for web-savvy snappers.
The images quality is very smooth, with good colour balance, there's lots of auto features but you can override them if you want to. I sometimes shoot 200 pix in a single session (expensive if you're using 35mm!)and carry this thing around as much as possible. Love it!
- I have had this camera for a year and have really enjoyed it. I like saving on 3.5 disk, good for backup for important picures. You can adjust the size, quality, etc. I comes with easy to use software. For 1.6 mega pixel it makes good pictures.
- I have one and the led screen got broken and want to replace because of the ease to use. The pictures come out like a professionals when printed if right settings are used. Absolutely would recomend to most novice of photographers.
- I am an eBay dealer in antiques, coins and collectibles of every stripe. My camera is a key component of my livelihood, and I can say unequivocally that the FD90 is the best camera for online merchandise photos out there. It may be a little bulky for outdoor everyday use, and the internal charger would be quite limiting for a vacation camera. But I never unplug my camera, so that makes no difference to me.
There is no more convenient medium for storing and ultimately editing photos than a floppy disk. It eliminates steps, and when you are doing 20 or 30 items at a time, it can make a real difference.
But the big advantage is the quality of the photos. My shots are demonstrably better than my competitors (my eBay seller ID is auktiononline_com so check for yourself). This camera has the all important macro feature for closeups, and I still marvel at the clarity of the closeups. I can easily show the flaws on a coin or a baseball card.
As for reliablity, AI have taken thousands upon thousands of shots with my FD90 over the last 3 years with no mechanical problems whatsoever.

5 comments about Sony DSC-D770 Cyber-shot 1.5MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom.
- My wife purchased the Sony S50 model for my birthday. I took several pictures with it and saved them to my PC. I returned the S50 for a couple of reasons: - I had a lot of dificulty gettingt the USB software to work - I really wanted one of the SLR type digital cameras
I narrowed my selection to the Sony 770 and the Olympus E-10, and based on price I took a chance on the Sony model. After working with it for a couple of weeks, I am very dissapointed and am sending it back. On the positive side, and contrary to some of the other reviews, It was extremely easy to pop the PCMCIA card in and out of the camera and into my laptop. No drivers or software were needed. Getting pictures into and out of photoshop was drag and drop simple. I found the camera very easy to use. The remote control was a great feature when working off a tripod. The feature set was good, and the flexibility was great. Now the negative news and the reason why I am returning it. The resolution of the pictures was not up to snuff with other cameras available. I took several shots in exact same lighting and subjects as the S50, and the S50 produced superior results in terms of sharpness of image and color rendition. The 770 produces muted, washed out colors, especially in low light. Trying to take pictures at night (capturing the neighborhood christmas displays)was a waste of time. The Flash unit is sub par and not able to provide adequate light. In fact the camera took better pictures in natural light than when using the flash. Much better results were obtained using an external flash borrowed from my 35mm camera. The resolution I guess is what you would expect from only 1.5Mpx, but there is no reason to settle for this unless you are stymied by price. Finally, I found the battery life to be totally unacceptable when using the internal flash, and the LCD. Many of the advanced features are only available when using the LCD. The batery lasted only for 30 minutes and maybe 20 shots when using the flash and the LCD to preview results. The concept of the camera was a nice try by Sony, perhaps they will up the ante by putting one of their more advanced CCDs into the next iteration. In the meantime, I am going to have to splurge and try the Olympus E-10
- People have the wrong idea that just because a camera doesn't have 3+ megapixels, it means that it is no good. Unless you are a professional photographer, 1-2 megapixels is just fine. This camera is a great camera with great features that allow you to really fine-tune your pictures. The quality of a picture is not determined by the number of megapixels, but by the attention to details such as focus, lighting, sharpness, etc.
This camera is a great camera for people who are not professionals, but want to learn the art of photography. With so many options and manual functions, one can really learn how a camera works and what works best in different situations. For a great digital SLR at such a great price, people should not be fretting over megapixels. This is a wonderful camera and a wonderful learning tool.
- In most reguards a great camera at a good price. But Sony sticking with it's proprietary, over priced and underperforming "memory stick" instead of the industry standard Compact Flash is VERY disappointing. This junk is slower, more expensive, comes in much smaller sizes, etc. It's also too bad they they do not use batteries you can use in a standard charger, or buy off the shelf. Meaning if you're on vacation and you find the perfect picture, you'd best have saved some of the juice in the propriatary batteries. Also a 5x zoom lens is not that impressive. Why not a 7x or better? Minolta's 5 megapixel Dimage 7 does. As do several others (some as high as 10x optical)
- I've been waiting for over a year to find a decently priced digital camera that has the feel of an SLR. When I found this camera (at [money] at [a local store]) it fit my needs exactly. For the price, you cannot get a better approximation of a real camera.
I'm seeing complaints about the software and pc card adapter, but it works fine for me. The other complaints seem to be more about the camera's quality, which I'm finding is excellent if you learn something about how it takes pictures. Adjusting the white balance is critical for indoor and night time shots, but this isn't simple. I didn't want a simple camera though. If I wanted point and shoot, there are plenty of other choices out there. For the price and the features, this camera is one of the best choices out there, and you can find some incredible deals now that it isn't being produced anymore.
- It is May 11, 2007 and Amazon is still trying to sell a 1.5 megapixel camera for $599!! I haven't checked, but maybe they have some beachfront property in Kansas to go with it . . .

- This summer while I was in a canoe taking pictures of my daughter, she accidently tipped us over. Here I am in a cold mountain lake with my Mavica and I think my camera is ruined. Well when I got home I dried the camera out for a week and cleaned out the lenses. Put in a new battery and the thing ACTUALLY WORKED and has been taking great pictures for the past four months. For something that is not rated as water resistant, I was surprised by the hardiness of the camera.
Complex as it may seem, this is no wuss of hardware.
- Not sure if anyone else in this reviewer pile has seen this, but I have had several "life events" including birthdays, my son's sonogram, and others that the camera shows upon review through its display the pictures you have taken. However, upon connecting it to the USB interface, they disappear. Disconnecting from the USB cable does not get the pictures back. Can you believe that Sony would release a product like this?
I bought this device for the ease of use, USB capability, and the CDR/CDRW format. However, for anyone wanting a reliable camera buy a $12 disposable! You can only rely on this unit giving you permanent digital pictures 91.2% of the time. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't buy this unit. There are far smaller units at a fraction of the price with 100% reliability. Granted, some of them don't use CDR/CDRW technology but memory sticks are fine with me it they don't lose pictures (and the cameras are quite smaller).
- I got this as a gift from my parents. They rarely buy me expensive items and when I opened this..I had no idea just how wonderful this camera was. It might not be top of the line..but it produces WONDERFUL photos. I am a scrapbooker and take lots of photos. All of photos I've taken with this camera have received RAVE reviews!! I was told once that I should be a professional photographer!!! - HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA!!
- Overall, this camera is GREAT. It takes beautiful pictures, has a good zoom, and doesn't eat up battery life.
However... It takes FOREVER to get the picture recorded onto the CD, and...
IT LOSES PICTURES. We had over ten pictures lost at once on our camera (Sounds like the same problem John McDonnough had in his review). This has only happened once, however.
Otherwise, it has been an absolute GREAT family camera, my family takes it almost everywhere we go (including a family cruise we went on in 04) and the shots were great, even enlarged!
- I have had this camera for 6 years and have never had a single problem with it. Recently I took it on my honeymoon and posted the pictures when I returned. I have had people asking me what kind of camera it is because the pictures turned out great! I have never had a picture lost or have had problems deleting pictures as some of the other reviews have stated. It is great to know that all my pictures that I have downloaded to my PC are always backed up on the disc. It is somewhat bulky, but has been more than I would have ever asked for in a digital camera that has lasted this long!

5 comments about Sony DSC-P5 Cyber-shot 3MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom.
- This camera [...]. When it takes a picture, it has about a 2 second delay between when you press the shutter and the picture is actually taken. This means that the camera is not at all useful to take pictures of our 2 year old son, because 2 seconds later he has already moved on to something else and the picture is a blur. We have lost more pictures because of this camera.
Tonight when trying to take our Christmas picture, I would press the shutter but no picture was taken. It was as if the camera could not figure out what it had to do. Try again, same result. Repeat, nothing. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, still nothing. When I set the camera down, disgusted that it wasn't taking any pictures, then flash! - took a nice picture of the pavement. Notice that I hadn't pressed the shutter for this picture.
I am in the market for another digital camera and am likely not going to get a Sony.
- I have had this camera for almost 2 years and have had no problems with it at all. The battery lasts for over an hour and they are so tiny, I always carry a spare. I have been looking for a newer camera and have noticed they are not made nearly as well. The p5 is small and lightweight but feels solidly built and I like the glass protecting the lcd. I have been very pleased with the photos it takes, even the nightshots. My only complaint is that the movie mode does not do well in low-light conditions. The controls are easy to work, very user friendly, and the camera takes great pictures.
- I owned this camera for several years. The first year it worked fine and I was happy with its performance. In the past year, I 've become completely dissatisfied with it. I always took good care of it, following the instruction manual. I first started to have power problems, the battery would not charge or would quickly discharge. Purchased a new one and now the shutter button does not work. It only goes down to the auto-focus mode but no to the record mode. I contacted Sony tech support and they tell me this is an unknow problem. Right! and I was born yesterday. Their only help was take it to a repair center.
- I purchased this camera about a year and a half ago on eBay, I paid about $220 for it ($160 for the camera, and the rest was on the battery, charger and memory stick). It's a very nice design, with a large screen and a solid feel, and not at all too large. The picture quality was fantastic, I had no complaints. However, I had to give the camera up to my mother because the low-light pictures were AWFUL. The night I bought it, I took the camera to a minor-league wrestling show, and we compared the photos to my friend's four-year-old Olympus camera. The difference was striking- his photos came out much better, mine were either too dark, or terrifically blurry (those were in night mode). Again, if you are going to be taking photos in the light, for a party or outdoors in the daytime, you will love this camera. In the dark? Stay away!
- I recieved this camera from a friend not a while ago for free. After reading the reviews, i was surprised at how old this camera was! 2002 was 3 years ago! And yet, this camera does a good job. 3.2 mpx is nothing, compared to the average now (around 4-5 mpx standard) but i must say this camera is good. For a 3.2 megapixle, this camera has very fine pictures. It is well worth it and does not lag as my old camera did. The negative effect of the camera is that after a while (3 years .. :P) the battery was worn out. It barely works for 10 seconds at a time before it says it needs a recharge. Other than that, the camera is good. I like it. But for the 2005-ers, there are much better cameras out there for cheaper prices. And more thin ones.
For 2002, this is a very good camera.
