5 comments about Sony DCRPC350 3MP MiniDV Digital Handycam Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom.
- Aside from the hoopla over its dock, 16 x 9 "WS" mode and so-called "24p" scan effect, Sony made the biggest blunder imaginable -- it eliminated the headphone jack with this camcorder and with it, a huge chunk of the prosumer/high end consumer camcorder user audience.
Basically, there's no way to gage even basic audio levels with this camera. if you're recording an interview, how do you know the audio isn't peaking? If you want to test playback audio, how can you without hooking this thing up to a TV?
Sony's R&D were flat out stoned the day they overlooked this feature; either that, or completely and utterly naive. They should look at the closest matchbox competitor -- the Canon Optura's -- and learn a thing or two about headphone jacks and audio levels....
- The main reasons I purchased this camera were its size and its resolution. The camera is small enough to fit in my coat pocket, which means that I have it with me when I need it, and its 3MP resolution means that I can leave my digital camera at home. In fact, this camera has an F1.8 lens, which is as fast as you'll find on most full-size cameras, so it takes decent pictures indoors even without using the flash.
While I've been delighted with the size and still camera capabilities, there are a few other features that I think are great as well. The first is the option to use 16:9 video format if you want. I have a HDTV, and video shot in normal 4:3 format doesn't fill the screen unless it's stretched sideways, making everyone look fat. The 16:9 option of the DCR-PC350 allows you to shoot video that fills the screen like a real movie. You'll probably appreciate this even more in a few years when most TVs are widescreen.
A second useful, though not well documented, feature is the "seek to end" feature. If you've been reviewing what you've recorded and want to start recording again without overwriting something, you can use the "seek to end" to move quickly to the end of the recorded section.
Another reviewer complained about the inability to monitor sound levels during recording. This hasn't been a problem for me as I found I could just plug a set of headphones into the AV jack and hear what was being recorded. In fact, both the AV port and the s-video port are active when the camera's on, so you can watch and hear what you're recording using an external monitor and headphones (or speaker) if you want.
The camera has tons of other fancy features, all of which are accessible through the handy touch-screen display, but those above are my favorites.
The main complaints I have about this camera are:
1) The memory stick. The camera ships with a memory stick that's got a measly 16MB capacity, so plan on replacing it with a 256MB or 512MB stick straight away. In addition, the memory stick is this odd "memory stick duo" format that you have to insert into a larger adapter (supplied) to make it readable by a computer. Using a standard SD card, which is the same size as the duo anyway, would have been a better idea.
2) The software. The bundled video editing software is terrible. Plan on buying Adobe Premiere, or using Windows Movie Maker.
3) The cabling. You definitely want to use firewire rather than USB 2.0 for doing your video transfers if for no other reason than it provides almost 2x the transfer speed. In addition, some video editing software looks for cameras only on a firewire port. So plan on buying a firewire cable as well.
The need to immediately drop another hundred or two on accessories is the main reason I gave this camera 4 stars instead of 5.
Lastly, I'd also recommend getting the "BCTRF Compact Battery Charger for F Series Batteries" and the "Sony HVLS3D 3 Watt Video Light" The charger is only slightly bigger than the battery and saves you lugging the AC adapter around on vacation. The light is tiny and despite being only 3 watts can make a significant difference indoors if you're close to your subject.
- I have had this camera for about 2 months now and really have had no problems with it. I love the size. It is small enough to fit in my jacket pocket while skiing. Takes awesome pictures movies, even during extremely bright conditions while skiing. I have used this camera indoors as well and find it to do a great job. I love being able to film in widescreen mode and play movies back on the widescreen tv. The pictures are extremely clear. My only problem is with the whole docking station / charging the battery issue. I would suggest buying an extra battery charger / ac cable or a travel charger so as not to have to unhook all of your cables from your computer every time you travel. Overall, I am very happy witht his camera and would definately buy another one if the need arose.
- Okay, so I don't have a lot of prior experiance for comparison but this camera was easy to use right out of the box and the more I learn how to use it the better it gets. Some people have faulted its small size but I love the fact that I can slip it in my pocket. It takes good quality video and the stills have been okay. As long as you don't blow them up too much the stills are fine, as good as I've seen on a lot of other 3MP cams.
- I have had this device for about two years, and I am generally happy with it. The camcorder specs for video resolution are excellent (at least for one that was designed a few years ago). It is small enough to fit in a coat pocket or even a pants pocket of baggy pants, so it can go places another larger camera would be left behind.
The digital stills have disappointing quality. They seem to be better in good sunlight, or in a closeup indoors, but they are not comparable to what most people get from a digital still camera. One person told me that, although the stills are supposedly 3.0 MP, their quality is closer to what a 2.0 MP still camera would give. As explained to me, the problem apparently is the imaging device -- what works well for video does not work well for stills, and vice versa. Even as of August 2007, there are no combination cameras that do a great job on both video and stills.
My solution was that I eventually bought a Nikon Coolpix S10 6.0 MP digital still camera for taking stills where I want really high quality stills. The Nikon will also take video, but it is poor quality.

5 comments about Sony DCR-TRV730 Digital8 Handycam Camcorder with Built-in Digital Still Mode.
- My comments on this camcorder are to help those who are not into specs but just plain English about this product.
First, my dislikes about this camera is 1. Black/White electric viewfinder - but the view is bright and clear 2. Don't expect to take great clear 35mm quality still pictures. The print quality is a bit grainy. You are better off buying a separate camera for still pictures; but at times, it adds excitement having a still shot here and there on your video recordings. *Now, the good stuff* this is why this camcorder is rated a 5 (Best) *PICTURE QUALITY This is the best video picture quality camcorder that I have owned. I previously owned a Canon UC20 with 410,000 pixels (great picture quality). This Sony DCR-TRV730 has at least 1,070,000 (according to the manual) pixels, which produces great color, clear and sharp video quality video recordings. *Minimum Illumination needed is seven Lux/ zero Lux NightShot modes* I was most impressed with the "Infra-Red NightShot" capability. Again, clear, sharp pictures. I put this camera through a test and I did not use my optional "HVL-IRH2 Video Light" - by recording in a room (with people inside the room) that was very dark - all lights were out and no sunlight. I was amazed with its quality and the clearness. The built-in infrared light was sufficient for a 20' X 30' size room. Note - NightShot will produce monochrome color. When I turn on my optional "HVL-IRH2 Video Light" (which has the capability of using its infrared or halogen lighting) the distance shooting was even greater and brighter, sharper picture quality. I advise purchasing an optional video light for inside recording, so you will get brighter, truer color and clarity. Even without the video light, normal room lighting still produced nice quality, clear video pictures. With the NightShot turned off and no optional video light, you will need sufficient room lighting in order to have excellent picture quality. *Built-in 18X Optical /500X Digital Lens* I also purchased the optional Sony .7x 37mm Digital Camcorder High Resolution Wide-Angle Conversion Lens (VCL-HG0737X). This added additional width and depth to my recording. The built-in lens did not have sufficient "width" for my recording in small close areas inside my home. The supplied Infolithium battery pack with the Accupower meter system is rated for approximately 2.5 hours of recording. I was only able to get approx. 1.3 hours due to the way I take pictures - I work the camera - focusing in and out and using the fade mode, giving my video more of a professional appeal. I also make use of the Still Picture mode and use the Memory Stick to save those still pictures. I then transfer the pictures onto my computer. This battery communicates with the camcorder. It tells you how much remaining power in the viewfinder and on the back of the LCD display. Great tool and accessory. Super Steady Shot Picture Stabilization System allowed me to take smooth looking video even when I had the shakes. I put the camera through another test -- I recorded a picture while riding in an old vehicle with poor shocks absorbers - if it was the excellent sound quality, which allowed you to hear the bumps and dips while riding, but the picture was flawless. *8 Different Picture Effects* This camera also allow you to change the picture affects to Black and White, Sepia, Negative Art, Pastel, Solarization, Slim, Stretch and Mosaic. This just adds pure fun to the video recordings. This camera also allows me to still view my old 8mm tapes. I now record using Hi8 mm tapes. Overall, I would not trade in this camcorder for another brand. This camera produces crystal-clear Digital8 pictures and CD quality sound. This camera allows an amateur photographer to feel and produce professional quality pictures. You will also need to purchase another/stronger battery packs for those extended recordings. If you plan to record your Childs school program or take a family trip to Disney World/Land, you will definitely need a stronger battery. I suggest the "NP-FM70 or the NP-FM91 InfoLithium battery pack. Depending on your purchase they are rated between 5.5 hours to 10 hours estimated recording time. You should also purchase an optional video light, such as "HVL-IRH2" (approx [amt]) and an optional wide angle high grade lens, such as the Sony VCL-HG0737X. I paid [amt] including shipping for these lens. The price I paid for this camera was [amt] (new) including shipping and 8meg memory media stick. I got a Great Deal. This camera alone estimated US selling price is [amt] without shipping and only 4meg memory media stick (standard with this model). Be prepared to pay at least [amt] + shipping charges for this model without the optional accessories.
- Used this for school and we are finding it works very well, so well, that our own high school is using this type of camera for all use of cameras for the school. Very reliable, high quality camera with easy to understand feautures and an easy way to film and to hold as well. Did have problem with lighting and trying to pick up sound at the same time but still very good.
- This is the first camcorder I have bought. I did a lot of research and finally decided to go with the Sony DCR-TRV730... and I am glad that I did.
The picture is great!! Very crisp and clear DVD quality. It is very easy to use. Within 5 minutes, I had it setup and ready to use. The controls are intuitive and well placed. However I would suggest reading through the excellent manual when you have a chance to learn about all the features. The zoom is clear and the image stabilization works great. The night shot is really neat, but the "Super Night Shot" is only suitable for use with a tripod. There are many built in special effects, like faders, B&W, Old Time Movie, etc... The only thing to remember is that you will need IEEE 1394/FireWire ports and cable if you wish to copy/edit the video to your computer. The included USB connection is only for still images and MPEG movies on the memory card. Overall a great camera, with professional results.
- This camera obviously has great features at its reasonable price. The night vision is a very creative (however unnecissary) feature that I found to be fun to show to your friends however not needed for filming very often. Unfortunatly, you may find yourself using nightvision often because as you take stills in lower light conditions the quality decreases. This decrease is only noticed when looking at the pictures on a computer or on paper (or when looking at movies on a TV screen). However, this camera tends to be cheaper than most others because it records in a Digital 8 format. In other words, it records digitally on to regular Hi8 tapes which are generally cheaper than most miniDV tapes. However, keep in mind if you buy a 120 minute Hi8 tape, this camera will only record 60 minutes on to it because the data takes more room. The camera, however, is very user friendly and can run almost completely automatically as well as manually. The autofocus is very efficient along with an excellent optical zoom and an oustanding digital zoom (although quality does decrease with digital zoom). The camera acts extremely well in brighter conditions and clearly out performs many other cameras, it's the indoor low light coniditions that still need plenty of work.
- I love this camcorder! I can get the close ups skinnaMAX can't touch. The zoom is top notch and the wide angle action catches the nips. I would recommend checking the manuel as it gives the down low you can't get just by trickin the gadget. The nightvision brings the dish to light and makes the digital quiver. I would encourage those who haven't to experience the Sony DCR-TRV730 for themselves.

5 comments about Sony DCR-HC32 MiniDV Handycam Camcorder w/20x Optical Zoom.
- Sony does a great job again. It could be a bit better in low light conditions, but with the 'back light' option it works well.
- Working perfectly 3 years after I bought it with heavy use. Good quality videos too. Great buy.
- This camera is not very good - poor video resolution after recording it on a memory card. The software is horrible and Sony tech support just plain lousy.
- I once thought this was a great camcorder for all the reasons already noted. Great video and audio quality, easy to use, good price.
But guess what? It's broken and out of warranty, and in order to even get a quote on the cost to fix it, I must send it to Sony, because Sony doesn't allow anyone but Sony repair their cameras any more. So, instead of going to one of the hundreds of capable and convenient repair shops in Denver, where I can get an estimate and repairs fast, I have to mail my camera to Texas. TEXAS!
So what's wrong with it? The camera refuses to properly load any miniDV tapes now - I get an error that says "Reload tape" and the error message won't go away no matter how many times I reload the tape. Apparently this is a common failure, a quick google search shows this same problem in discussion threads all over the net. And, believe it or not, the most common suggestion to fix this error is to smack the camera repeatedly on the side to "unstick" a stuck part. This did not work with my camera, but good luck to you if you buy this piece of junk.
This is the last Sony I will ever purchase. Been burned too many times by Sony now - a TV, a PDA, a digital camera, and now this. I'm buying a Panasonic PV-GS80 miniDV Camcorder to replace this doorstop. I bought an Olympus 790SW camera to replace my broken Cybershot, and it works great. I should have learned my lesson by now, but I'm brand-loyal to a fault. Sony pushed me too far this time. No more Sony. Never again.
- Bought this to digitize tapes shot on my procam. Now I use this more than the HDV camera. Has all the controls I need but I wish it had the audio functions I miss on the prosumer camera. Never thought I would prefer this over the big brother. I haven't had disappointments with the zoom but I did install a wide angle adapter for better room coverage. Keep it mounted ALL the time.

- The camera is great, the image cuality is awesome and the conection to the computer trough digital cable absolutely aginst dummys.
I recomend it.
- I bought this camera a year ago for general family use. For that purpose, this camera is fine (a wider angle lens would have been nice). Its color capture is great, it's ergonomic, light weight, everything a camcorder should be--with one major exception.
No EXTERNAL MICROPHONE PORT!!!
Big deal. So what? The built in mike is mediocre at best. If you need to isolate a set of sounds or voices (say, recording a small group conversation, or interviewing someone in public), you're screwed--because this camcorder lacks the one feature included on most camcorders since the invention of camcorders--an external microphone port. Instead, they include a LANC port (not for microphones) that you can use to sync together multiple Sony camcorders. Most people I've talked to (including the store that sold me the camcorder) have no idea what a LANC port is nor what it does.
A microphone port would have made this camcorder functionally complete. Sony engineers included one on all of the other DCR-HC series--why not this one?
Dirty pool, Sony. Dirty pool indeed.
- This is the first Sony product I've ever bought - paid $400 and a year later paid $310 to fix dead firewire port that only successfully completed one video transfer from camera to computer. It took them 3 months to fix it. How can I possibly buy another Sony?
- I used this camera a handful of times, I noticed that the lcd and viewfinder was black. I was able to hear audio but no video. I did some research and found out Sony had a lawsuit against them regarding the CCD on some of their cameras. Well they refused to fix the DCR HC21 because it was not on their list but the problem was exactly the same. I will never buy another Sony product again.
- I have owned this camera for two years now and it has work flawlessly. It is my first video camera of any kind and it is better and easier to use than I expected. The picture quality is great and the size makes it easy to take anywhere. I did not expect it to be the best camera on the market but I am satisfied with what I got for the price and when I'm ready, I'll upgrade to a more expensive, better camera (after two years I'm still happy with this one).
As for some of the bad points brought up in other reviews:
>"The software that comes with it is junk" - this is true, use the software that came on your computer or spend a little money and buy video editing software. You'll be happy you did, even the cheap ones work fairly well and the more expensive ones just get better.
>"There is no microphone/headphone jack" - No, there isn't, but many comparable cameras have the same problem, this is usually something you find on a camera that's a bit more expensive.
>"Customer Service is Poor" - I don't know as I have had no reason to deal with them.

5 comments about Sony DCR-SR40 30GB Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 20x Optical Zoom.
- As much as intriging a hard disk may be, you should be awre that this are pretty much first generation cameras and thus they do have some problems. Should you overcome these, you should be happy with this camcorder.
More specific:
-if you are an exclusive mac user then you should not buy this as it is not really compatible with apple.
-it is pc compatible but you may need specific software (or settings) in some instances
-if you have a new sony pc life is easier for you
-you do not have to deal with tapes anymore and thus downlowding is much much faster
-easy to use and good lens.
-small and handy
All in all a decent camera but I expected more from Sony as they have proven that they can do better.
- I've had no problems editing content transferred from the camcorder to my PC. I don't use the software that comes with the camcorder, I use professional editing software and I have heard it is best to buy seperate editing software when purchasing any hard drive camcorder.
The video image quality is terrific. I've edited my scenes and put together splendid DVDs, the transitions between scenes were smooth and impressive. MPEG2 isn't as compressed as MPEG4 (Divx), however it's still a good standard. Anyone who doesn't get good results needs to upgrade their PC - there is nothing less than perfect about this camcorder.
The optical zoom is good, although I wish it was 30x or 40x optical zoom. The digital zoom feature is limiting, but that is to be expected and is the case with any camcorder.
The controls are easy to use, you can perform the basic functions, zoom, record start/stop without using the touchscreen. Advanced functions are configuration options are in the touchscreen which is easy to navigate.
The camera is light and petite, and transports nicely. It fits in one hand well - when recording you can use your other hand to stabilize the shot.
- We had one of those big bulky ugly Sony camcorders, but for Xmas, I told my husband I wanted a camcorder small enough to fit into my pocket book since I have two kids and I wanted to record all the cutesy things they do and say (one is 3 and the other is 8 months).
I was happy with the size of it, the weight, the quality and the ease of use. I too think that the docking station is a bit of a hassle, but overall, I love the convenience of throwing it into my pocket book without it weighing it down and causing too much strain on my shoulder. It's easy and handy whenever I need it and I can pretty much leave it anywhere around the house for quick use instead of lugging the other big one around the house or wherever I go.
- I bought this product shortly after my daughter's birth to capture her precious moments. It is lightweight, and easy to use. The handycam has some cool features and the online user guide is certainly user-friendly. I was able to easily burn a dvd and even create a dvd menu.
The camera feature is useless. The photos come out terrible, and also very blurry, especially if the object is moving.
The quality of the picture is very good during the day, but at night the backlight feature does look a bit artificial.
Overall, a good camera for the price.
- This was a gift from my husband to record and photograph our trip to Disney. I am horrified at the video and especially the picture quality. I cannot believe this thing is on the market. Shame on Sony.

5 comments about Sony HDR-SR1 AVCHD 2.1 MP 30GB High-Definition Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom.
- After spending plenty of time researching which high definition camera to buy I went with this one. This is the best camera I have ever had. The picture clarity is AMAZING!!! on my plasma. The videos look like those awesome demos they put in the store so you are pushed to buying the tv.
Compare to the other models this one is great because it has a USB port right on the camera itself so you don't need any adapters. I choose this one over the HDR-SR7 because of the USB on board the SR7 does not have it. The only real difference is that this one has a 30 gig drive the other has 60 and this one has 4 megapixel camera and the other has 6 megapixel. Trust me this one is the best you won't be dissapointed.
One last thing, everyone complains about the software, I think it works great for what I need. I did buy Pinacle Studio 11 which does support the new AVCHD format so you can edit your movies and do all kinds of cool stuff to them.
- Ive owned this camera for about six months and havent used it as muchas I would like to! This is an pricy piece of equipment with no software editing programs availabile. Bought vegas 7 and doesnt recognize the camera, so cant edit the movies? I havent tried to many of the features on it but deceided to experiment only to find out there is a problem with the"Firmware" and its going to cost me to find out whats wrong with it! There is only a 90 day warranty so you better try all features and functions before 90 days. Sony seems not very helpful on software issues or their customers. You get sorry!! THIS UNIT SHOULD BE FULLY TESTED AND FUNCTIONAL BEFORE RELEASED FOR SALE. I think that the lack of good software hurts my not using this lemon as much as I would like to. Ill give it a plus by saying the video taken is GREAT! HOPE A SOLUTION COMES ALONG SOON AND ITS PROVEN FOR USE WITH THIS CAMERA.
- I chose the SONY over the JVC and PANASONIC models because of its features. I like the manual adjustment rings ability to control any one of four pre selected features, such as focus or exposure. It has image stabilization that actually works. I really like the AVCHD mpeg 4 video compression giving me at least 4 hours of best quality recording on a 30GB hard drive. Many newer model cameras do not have a viewfinder and I need a good color viewfinder which this one is more than adequate. No one had anything really bad to say about it, so I bought it. I received this great camera from Amazon for a great price and in less than 3 days. I have been enjoying shooting clear, bright; rich color videos for several weeks without any problems and I have actually been using the 4 mega pixel still image capture feature, saving jpeg photos onto a Sony memory stick duo memory card. I am very happy about this purchase. Now if some one would just invent a good quality, fast, inexpensive Blue- ray burner that uses a SATA interface I would buy it.
- My husband and I purchased this to record the momentous occasions in life. It's worked really well. I like the ability to switch between camera and video. The camera doesn't take the best pictures of my "always on the move" 17 month old son. They tend to be blurry. The interface was easy to use and learn and the software that comes with it is great! I would absolutly recommend this camera!
- I bought this HDR-SR1 the same month it first came out in October of 2006. Our old one is a Hi8 Sony HandyCam and my wife and I decided to invest on another videocam that can captures in digital our son's first moments, our first vacation in Hawaii, etc. I was so impressed with the functionality and the quality of this camera. As an avid audiophile, I cannot settle for anything less than an HD quality video. The quality of the video and 5.1 Dolby digital surround it captures is breathtaking. Not only we save money on buying tapes, you can burn it to DVD with an ease. You can now save your videos and archive them for as long as you want them. Since I also have a PS3 and it supports AVCHD playback, I am able to enjoy full 1080i resolution and watch it like a professional video capture. It's a definite must for me, especially capturing those special moments with my son (and another one on the way). The built-in hard drive and the capability that you can switch to digital photo is excellent. Now I don't have to carry two equipment. This unit is bundled as an HD video and a digital photo unit as one. Last but not the least, it is made by Sony. I have owned many Sony products in the past and none of them has dissapointed me. Just like any investments, there is no guarantee that it will not break or last forever so I recommend on getting warranty extension. It's worth the piece of mind.
Why not I gave it a full five star? I was expecting more of a 2.1 MP resolution photo during video recording.
I truly recommend this item.

5 comments about Sony DCR-SR60 30GB 1MP Hard Disk Drive Handycam Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom.
- Can't provide much info of a technical manner, but for home use this camcorder performed perfectly. Most of the video shot so far has been in a gymnasium of my daughter's basketball games. I've had trouble with the same type of setting with both digital cameras and camcorders because at zoom, the light levels record very low. This was not the case with this camcorder, which is the main reason I decided to purchase it in the first place. Overall the camcorder is very easy to operate, it's very point and shoot. When finished shooting it's very easy to put in it's dock and transfer video either directly to DVD or to your computers hard drive for editing and back up. My only complaint would be battery life and cost of extra batteries. The battery that comes with it performed as advertised but it's just a little too short and the purchase of a second battery is a must.
- I bought this camera thinking that Sony would have improved on the success of their DCR-SR100. The SR60 is a nice camera that is just as compact than the SR100, it weighs less than the SR100 and is still very managable. I love the automatic lens cover and the menu is very easy to use. I hear a lot of people complain about the menu setup, but for me (a point-and-shoot home movie person who almost always relies on automatic mode) it was fine.
It gave GREAT looking outdoor video but I wasn't too hot on the indoor quality; the picture came out a little too blue when an area was lit by overhead lights. When the lighting became even more dim, the picture became very grainy. I'm not saying that the picture was not usable; but for the cost of the camera ($600), I expected a little more.
Like i said earlier, the picture outdoors was very good, everything appeared clear and all the colors appeared correct. I used the camera in several action shot opprotunities and the focus appeared fast enough for me and never gave a blurry image.
The format of the camera (HDD) is awesome. I simply connect the camera, via USB2, to my computer and it detects it as a hard drive. From there its just drag and drop and you're all done. It takes a matter of minutes to tranfer the information, way better than the real time transfering from miniDV tapes. With its 30gb Hard drive, almost 7.5 hours of video, that's 15 miniDVD's. The Hard drive is just more convenient than other formats.
I used the included software and it was very easy to use. One bad thing I didn't like was the software showed the file name on the screen throughout the entire DVD. I could not figure out how to remove it and when I contacted Sony, they said you can not remove it. If you use the direct DVD burn function (burns directly from the camcorder's hard drive), then it creates the video without the name. The direct DVD burn function is great for the making video from the camcorder's hard drive, but if you already tranferred video to your computer's hard drive, then your forced to use Sony's software (or preferrably another 3rd party program).
I was overall pleased with the camera except for its indoor performance and since that is the majority of my video, I returned it and opted for the SR100, which I find to perform better indoors but at a higher price. I would have liked to have upgraded to the SR1 but I couldn't afford its $1500 price tag and I wasn't sure if the HDTV would survive its upcoming war with Blu-ray or EDTV.
If asked if I would recommend this camera, I would still say yes but give my experiences with the indoor quality. If one could look past that, then I would also advise to consider the SR80 instead, it appears to be the same camcorder but with a larger (60 gb) hard drive. During this Holiday season, I've seen the SR80 go for only $100 more than the SR60, not too bad for those really long extended trips.
Hope this helps
- We bought this particular camcorder because is records directly to a hard drive. We had borrowed someone else camcorder that used mini DVDs and had an issue with the finalization process and lost the first 3 weeks of video of our daughter. We have been extremely happy with the DCR-SR60. The video quality is excellent and very easy to use. It is easy to download to the computer. My only negative would be the very basic program for burning a DVD that SONY provides. So we boght Roxio's Creator version 9 to make our DVDs. Overall, I would definitely recommend this camcorder.
- After reading all the reviews for sony camrecorders, we have selected this product with my fiance which we will used it in our honeymoon coming in 2 weeks time. Although It was on-stock and after ordering sucessfully, I have received an email just saying that my order has been canceled, without explaining the reason. So I wrote to customer's service and they replied me that the seller of this product "was temporarily unable to accept payment through Amazon web site. (This can happen for a variety of reasons.)" They are sorry for inconvience and hope to see me again soon! I have appreciated amazon all the time and recently (just before receiving cancelation email) ordered an ipod for my cousin as well. But now I am not sure if you can see me EVER again.
- The Sony DCR-SR60 is a great camera, light weight and great resolution, i recieved it the next day i ordered, i was thinking on buying another with more HD capacity but i'm realizing that 30 GB is enough for everyday recording. I wish it had frame by frame video recording but i guess this features may exist in the professional cameras only.
The software is very friendly and simple and has everything you need to interact with the PC.

- I absolutely LOVE this camcorder and the NightVision Feature is Ultra Cool. The unique hi-tech touch screen is also an added plus. I had a problem with the LCD but it was fixed for free by SONY and I've had NO PROBLEMS since. Can't say enough great things about this gem. All kinds of features, "LIKE BACKLIGHT" and excellent DV Quality! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

- I have been using this camera for four years now and had been very happy until my camera fell victim to the "CCD issue" in which the screen goes blank when trying to record. Some history...this CCD problem happens in almost all of these models and has resulted in a class action suit against Sony. They now have to repair all TRV-19 cameras free of charge, including shipping to and from your home. (If you need more info on this please visit the Sony website.) I went forward with the repairs and when I received my camera back it was working correctly and the repairs appear to have been made but a small cover piece is missing. I phoned the customer service number on my invoice and the supervisor states this piece was not on their inventory taken when they received my camera and there is nothing else they could do. So I have a functional camera now but not in the same condition that I sent to them and they really could care less--it's my word against theirs. So much for customer service. If you need to send your camera in please take lots of pictures of the condition before shipping and remove all removable parts because there is a good chance you won't get them back. I was really wanting to purchase a Sony big screen TV but this experience has ruined that plan for me. I WILL NEVER BUY FROM SONY AGAIN. I know most (if not all) electronic corporations have customer service issues but this one takes the cake. They did not want to do the right thing in the first place my fixing a problem that has been confirmed as a manufacturing defect. It's disheartening that it took a lawsuit to get Sony to do what they just should have done in the first place! And...I missed getting my baby daughter's first crawl on video because of this defect--wouldn't you know the camera broke down right then...ugh! Yes...I am frustrated. I hope some of my vent has helped you...thanks for your time.

- Bought this handycam when it was new. 2003 I think. Probably have went throught 50+ tapes, and this camera hasn't flinched. Bought the extended warrenty and haven't used it. Just what i was looking for.
- OK......I have had the DCR-trv19 for several years now and the CCD bug got me while I was on tour with the camera. I was very mad but found out the sony will fix it for free and pay for the shipping. Just google your camera's model # with the letters "CCD" also and the link will come up where you can sign up and print out your shipping receipt. It's a slam dunk. a great camera and they support it to the end. Even though I have a hard disk recorder and an HD camera, I still use this little gem alot. It's small, durable and great pic quality.

5 comments about Sony DCRTRV840 Digital8 Camcorder w/ 3.5" LCD, USB Streaming, Memory Stick, and Mega Pixel Video/ Still.
- The TRV840 is like a M1 tank in several ways:
1)When you shoot a subject, you get great results. 2) It can use a variety of "ammo" (plays Hi8 and 8mm tapes also). 3) Weighs "a ton" (stable but rough on the hand after a while). 4) Reliable and sturdy.Summary: Exceptional video, excellent sound, 1 MP digital stills (Great for email or web posting). Able to convert any video to digital, 8mm inside the camera or other video by pass through. A great feature if you have old videos you want to digitize. Just make sure your PC is up to the task! For my specific needs of great digital video and the ability to digitize old tapes, I can overlook the excess bulk. Videos should be short and sweet anyway, so I'll just put it down when my hand starts to ache! If you need the same features, the TRV840 can't be beat.
- This is a great camera! It is very easy to use. It takes very clear digital video, and for 1 megapixel CCD takes good digital pictures. It has many neat features. It has a large LCD screen for easy reviewing.
It records Mpeg files on the memorystick for display on computers. This is a great feature although the files recorded are a little grainy. This is great for e-mailing vacation movies back to family members. The quality of the digital video is great. The bad thing is that you don't get much recording time on one tape. It uses 2 hour analog tapes, but when you record in digital mode you only get 1 hour on each tape. The picture taking feature is wonderful for vacation. You don't have to carry both a still camera and a video camera around with you. The pictures are only 1 megapixel, but they show up on a computer screen great. We were very pleased with the results of the pictures. The battery life is very long. We purchased a separate quick charger for our batteries which was a great addition. It doesn't take much time to charge and they last quite a while compared to our old Minolta camcorder.
- This is a very nice camcorder for the money. I love the larger view screen, and the battery lasts quite a long time. The picture quality is very good, but there is considerable noise from the motor that gets recorded on the tape. If you're taping a birthday party or sporting event, the noise isn't too bad, but if you're using it to record the birds chirping on a quiet morning, forget it; the noise from the motor will drown out anything you'd be able to hear, it's that loud. Lastly, I have had several old 8mm tapes from my old camcorder that will not play on this camcorder. They will play on my neighbor's 8mm Samsung camcorder, but not on this Sony. I was a little upset by this.
- All the characteristics of this camera are great. The still digitals to mpegs, but I had to buy a Canon for this particular camera to be compatible with my G4 Mac. I bought the camera before I bought my G4.
- hi
i m intersted in 2 pieces. how do i contact you? what are the payment methods for it?
thanks

5 comments about Sony DCR-SR100 3MP 30GB Hard Drive Handycam Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom.
- Resolution is very good, sound is acceptable, you don't have to carry tapes, etc. BUT, editing your movies is a nightmare! The software provided is almost useless, I have tried with Ulead's MovieFactory 6 Plus and with Windows Movie Maker with no results, and finally I could do some editing with Adobe's Premiere 3.0, but the final product is somehow jerky, as if the speeds of the PC and that of the DVD player were different,no matter what I do, and the most you can get is a 30 minute or so movie; beyond that you will need a super PC to do it. Should I have known these facts I would have purchased a mini DV model.
- Took me 3 1/2 hours to get software installed (instructions are BAD - had to fiddle around for a LONG time to finally get software installed). Once installed, I copied movies to computer hard drive. Guess what? No sound. Burned to DVD - put in DVD player - NO SOUND. This camera has sorely disappointed. Its virtually useless.
- What attracted my wife and I to this is the large, 30GB hard drive. She takes *tons* of movies daily of our twin babies, and we still only have to clear the hard drive about once every three months.
Also, since it uses a hard drive, I love the speed and versatility you get when transferring movies. The included software allows you to burn everything to DVD with literally just a press of a button...it even compensates for when your movies span multiple DVDs. Perhaps the best part here is that you are not bound to buying custom/proprietary mini DVDs or tapes to take your movies...only to spend even more money copying those to a DVD, VHS tape, etc., just to be able to view them or make a backup.
A little tip...when you back up your movies, ALWAYS back up to multiple places, and preferably multiple media. (Because if you are a new dad, the LAST thing you want to do is lose the pictures/movies of a new mom's babies!!)
For example, I have an external USB hard drive that I plug into my computer to make a backup of everything on the camcorder. After that, I use the one-button feature to burn to DVD. (I generally don't back up directly to my computer, since that will just clog up the hard drive rather quickly.) Then, to keep the DVDs organized, I use the Casio CW-100 CD Label Printer...very quick and easy to use.
This "multi-factor" backup approach will give you a comfortable safety net, so that if your kids want to be cute and hold a really strong magnet to your backup hard drive (essentially erasing it), you still have your DVDs. And if they want to see what happens when they hold a lighter to the DVDs, you still have your hard drive backup. :-)
One thing that isn't the greatest is that the camcorder runs ONLY on its battery. Plugging it in just charges the battery, as opposed to charging the battery in parallel with powering the camcorder. (So basically, if your battery is dead, you have to wait until it is charged enough to use again.)
Furthermore, there is no charger for the battery (at least none that comes with it)...it has to be attached to the camcorder to charge...so you can't just buy another battery to have easy, continuous use.
But even with these minor deficiencies, this is still the best camcorder on the market. It is certainly one of the pricier ones, but it is worth every penny since in the end, it saves you money from all the other junk you'd otherwise have to buy.
- This is a great camera, I have had it a couple of years now and it has been great. Battery life is outstanding, sturdy build and great options. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is (a) it does not have a manual focus button on the case (its buried in menus) and (b) it does not have a memory card slot. I believe the new models have addressed both of these issues.
- I bought this video camera because I desired a neat, tidy way of storing digital videos. It is very good for that. And I also used it to copy a VHS onto DVD. Didn't know I'd appreciate that capability as much as I do. The microphone is exceptional and the video quality even in low-lighting is pretty good. I struggle getting great stills with it though - the delay between clicking the button and actual capture is too long for my liking. Maybe there is a setting to address that - I'm still learning my camera. I also find that with my hand under the safety strap, using the buttons is awkward and not comfortable. Red-eye has been a chronic problem for me. There is a way to prevent it, but you have to remember to set the setting for it first - and I never do until it's too late. Great product over all. Software does the job but not with any sophistication.
