  1. The Sigma 28-200mm zoom macro is an excellent lens for the typical portrait or landscape photo. I was a bit disappointed in the macro feature for a couple of reasons. While I realize that no telephoto lens can really take "macro" images, I was used to the 28-135mm Sigma macro that I have for my SLR film camera. A friend does have a 28-135mm for his Nikon digital SLR, so I was hoping to get one. That lens has a macro switch and a image ratio of 1:2. Unfortunately, Sigma no longer makes the 28-135mm lens, at least not for digital cameras. So I selected the 28-200mm macro with an image ratio of 1:3.8 and no macro switch. With my old 28-135, I could use one lens for just about all my photos; I will not be able to do that with the 28-200. Even with these exceptions, however, I do find the 28-200 lens to have very good optics and flexibility.

  1. This is a magnific lense for your photos with a great price and high quality.

  2. This lens was an upgrade from my old Sigma 75-300 zoom, which was fine in it's time but just plain worn out. For those who aren't familiar with the Minolta Maxxum series, be aware that this lens has a pretty slow auto focus, but that is a limitation of the body and not the lens and it is still usable. You'll get more satisfaction from going manual focus.

I love this lens. Very accurate at all focal lengths, below average lens "flair" even without the included lens hood, and very comfortable in the hand. The ergonomics are first rate; you can hand carry it all day without much discomfort unlike the new Canon USM lens's, which are truly excellent and fast but Really Heavy.

The best thing is the Macro feature, which at 300mm gives a 1:2 ratio. This translates to incredible close-up 300mm shots at just 9 inches away!!! Fantastic, but bring your tripod (which you should have anyway).

Not a second of regret for this one.

  3. Just began taking pictures with my Minolta Maxxum 5, which came with a lens up to 90mm. That was great but I wanted more. Since I like taking nature pictures, and portraits, I needed a macro lens. This one fit the bill. I highly recommend it to anyone. With the lens that came with the camera, and this Sigma lens, I will be set for a long time. It is also very easy to use in both Automatic Focus or Manual, and it's not heavy or cumbersome to carry.

    Great buy!!!

  1. Autofocus doesn't work well at all, but then who needs autofocus on a fisheye lens? Very good images from this, and the chromatic abberation and vignetting is easily fixed in Photoshop.

  1. This is one fantastic lens. It is BIG, built like TWO TANKS, and takes gorgeous gorgeous shots. I bought this lens after a year or so of excellent results from its smaller sibling, the venerable 105mm macro. I thought it would be useful to get the extra working distance that the 180 affords. I can say with certainty that the longer focal length is a dream come true. You get so close up to your subject without being right "in it." I had imagined that this would be a "tripod only" lens as it is hard to hold a large lens steady. I have been amazed at my hand held shots coupled with my Konica Minolta 5d (in body image stabilization surely helps!). I have taken excellent tack sharp images hand held with shutter speeds as low as 1/25 at ISO 100. I don't regard myself as a particularly steady hand either. Color is great, sharpness is superb, accessories (case, hood, & tripod collar) are all first rate. Most importantly, photo colleagues are as enthusiastic as I am (more so I suppose) about the results. You won't be disappointed if you can find one for your KM 5d, 7d, or Sony A100! By the way, them Minolta /Sony mount of this lens is NOT HSM, you know that. AF with macro lenses is tough anyway, you know that, right? Right! Even without HSM, AF is better than on the 105mm. Enjoy!

  1. I have read a lot of reviews and they all give good marks for the Sigma 70mm lens. In my opinion it's a very good lens I would say it's probably a pro lens. And probably comparable to Canon's 100mm f/2.8 lens. Though some say it's a bit soft at 2.8. Need less to say while I haven't had a lot of time to use it all the pictures I have taken it came out sharp. And at the price its cheep compared to other lens. So if you're looking for an affordable macro lens takes a strong look at this one.

  2. this lens is incredibly sharp and good value, but a key failure is that it does not have internal focusing. This means that your painstaking set-up can be thrown off because the front element encroaches onto your subject. To me, that's no good for a macro lens.

  3. I didn't get this lens from Amazon, but I buy a lot of things from them and it is probably the best forum for review writing. I purchased this lens from a local photography chain in Russia and although it is probably my fault for not checking better in the store there was a serious issue and now I must deal with Sigma's authorized repair facility to get it corrected. The problem is that when zoomed out to the 1:1 ratio and the aperture stopped down to maximum or near maximum a lot of dust and fibers are visible on the pictures I take. It appears that this is inside the lens between elements and not on the surface outside. I had to take this to the Sigma authorized repair facility and now must wait several weeks to use my brand-new lens. I also agree that with the front element moving out to focus close that this is a liability with a macro lens. The few images I did take before noticing the problem look great after cleaning up all of the dust in photoshot so I will see what it will do when I finally get it back.

  4. i started using this lens only in close up pictures then i found that i can focus to infinity with it. i use it as an all around lens now. it helps of course that it is a 2.8 lens. the only things i can't shoot with it is for detail in far off picture. still need the ole 70-300 or 50-500 lenses for that.

  5. I tried the Canon 60 macro for a month and it was okay but ended up buying the 70 mm Sigma macro. The extra reach and, IMO, much sturdier build quality decided my purchase. Three other lenses I own are Canon L lenses, so I am critical about lens quality. The Sigma 70 macro is as sharp as a tack. A superb lens.
