  1. This lense was just what I was hopeing for. I needed the 500mm for my wildlife photography and once stopped down a click or two it was very sharp. There are other lenses that are sharp too but they can't touch this price.

    Very happy with my purchase.

    Ed

  2. I didn't have much of a budget w/ which to shop for a long telephoto lens-about $500. I was able to find this lens (APO only; not DG,RF)at a reputable on line photography outlet(used, excellent quality) for that price. Eventually , I spend about $60-$70 more to buy a Tiffen 86mm UV filter(coarse thread!)to protect large, exposed front element (from same outlet) & new hood (directly from Sigma)
My first shots were disappointing but I expected that. I've achieved better results after learning to: shoot from a steady tripod w/ a remote release or even handheld at very fast shutter speed - 1/ 1000 or faster. depending on light, try to stop down (from 6.3 to f /8 or f/11 too.
Then, if willing give up some distance (use 400mm VS. 500mm)this seems to produce a better photo.
I'd like to experience "pro" Nikon glass, but couldn't afford to go there.
    Hope this helps....
    Pablo
(p.s. check out sigma 170-500mm photo pool on FLICKR; my photos are of humming birds, deer, etc.)

  1. I bought a Sigma 28-70mm EX lens a few months ago from Adorama and have been using it on a Sigma SD14. Auto-focus is hit and miss, too often focusing well past the infinity mark on the lens--and producing blurry foregound images. Auto-focus problems seem to be common with Sigma lenses and the solution is to send them back to Sigma for calibration. I just turned off the auto-focus by a small button on the lens and manual focus using the markings on the lens (in manual focus, the focus ring isn't very firm and is easy to move accidently, so just take care when shooting). Manual focus to infinity results in very high resolution, sharp corner to corner images throughout the zoom range. One online review of this lens suggested the best optical performance was found at F11. I found excellent results anywhere between F8 and F11.

The lens is 35mm equivalent to about 48mm to 120mm on the SD14. The wide end always seems not wide enough--but the lens really is just a good normal lens with moderate telephoto. Images look yellow in the camera view finder, but this yellow tint in the RAW converted images isn't really apparent--Sigma RAW files on initial conversion are already oddly other-wordly warm anyway and adjustment in white balance works wonders getting to reality or somewhere in between.

The lens feels solid and well built. Infinity focus remains the same focus ring position through the whole zoom range. Some CA is apparent in images shot at the wider end of the lens (easily removed with CS3 raw tools) and hardly detectable in images shot at the mid to telephoto end. The optical performance, despite the lens having to be stopped down to F8 to F11, makes it a keeper for me.

  1. I hope no one takes John B. Stafford's word here. Research the web for reviews on this lens and see the samples of what it can deliver. Most pros agree that this lens is not only extremely well build but it delivers very sharp and contrasty images on par with anything that Canon lenses can do, if not better.

  2. I've had this lens in my bag for almost five years and have used it countless times with my EOS 3. I use it both for macro and for normal photography due to its extreme clarity as well as it's fast focus motor. While in macro, depending on your composition, it may have do some motor searching in order to obtain focus, but outside of macro the focus is very fast. I often use it with the automatic eye focus on the EOS 3 and this lens performs beautifully. The *extra* 80mm gives you some valuable distance from potentially nasty subjects, (i.e. bees), and yields more camera position versatility over the Canon 100mm macro model, contradicting a previous reviewers post. The glass is very clear and sharp. If I have to pack light, this lens is the one lens going in my small shoulder bag. It's well worth the money, believe me.

  3. I read an enthusiastic review of this lens in Shutterbug magazine about a year ago, in which its performance was compared favorably with similar lenses made by Canon and others. Without question, this lens has both the optical and mechanical performance one expects from first class premium lenses made by Canon and Nikon. I was especially impressed to see superb photographs taken by this lens for both closeup and nature photography. Unless one truly has a compelling reason for the Canon 180mm macro lens - and the only ones I can think of is that maybe its autofocusing is quieter with slightly better optical performance - then I suspect that the typical user of Canon 35mm autofocus SLRs will be quite satisfied with this lens. Without a doubt, this is one of the finest lenses being offered by a distinguished third party lens manufacturer.
