5 comments about Icons Of Fashion: The 20th Century (Prestel's Icons).
  1. I have only just begun this book (20 pages in), and I am enthralled. So many fashion books are written chronologically, so this book, arranged by theme and designer, is an interesting change. The pictures are gorgeous, many of them are in color, and every other page contains an essay on various topics. The topics range from an influence on fashion, a particular designer, themes in collections, or a period of history. Included are also short timelines of the careers of designers from the last century. This book covers a wide range of topics, and gives the reader a comprehensive look at the past century in fashion. I would not recommend this book for someone who wants a chronological look at the development of fashion trends, because the articles skip from the thirties to the Victorian era to the twenties. It is interesting, colorful, and even educational.

  2. The history of the 20th century can be revealed through its fashion trends, and Gerda Buxbaum Icons Of Fashion: The 20th Century proves this with an overview of fashion trends and revolutions. Yes, there are the icons of fashion to testify to these changes: Chanel, Karan and others - but also fine photos capturing styles ranging from body stockings to military and cocktail dress; all contained in an excellent overview blending visuals with a running commentary on fashion's influence.

  5. Icons of Fashion: The 20th Century is a very edgy and sophisticated book. It takes on a unique approach about the icons of the 20th century. The content of this book is not in chronological order but rather in theme and designer ranging from the 1900s to 2000.

To details of the pictures to the interesting facts of the earliest designers made me want to read more about the book. Reading about the designers, on the side of the book, there is a timeline about their life and businesses, which was really helpful, considering I had to write an assignment about the different designers and I could just refer back to the timeline.

I loved how the book gave pictures dating back to the 1900s to today. It was really interesting to see how fashion goes in a circle. For example, the belt around the waist, that just came into fashion two years ago. Also the design, the little black dress.

This book is very helpful and I suggest it to anyone who is interested in the fashion Industry becuase it was interesting, colorful and very educational.

  1. The illustrator, M.Sasek, lives up to his reputation with wonderfully illustrated images of Ireland both in the city and the countryside. (Be wary of amazon's packaging. I ordered a new book and part of the cover was dog eared)

  2. Great book for my grandchildren for St. Pat's Day. Well written, good pics and terrific information about Ireland.

  3. I am a huge fan of Sasek so I like every book he's wrote and illsutrated. This one abut Ireland is nice and funny and "greener".
As I think that Sasek is one of the best children illustrator I suggest this one and even the other ones. My daughter loves it and she learns many informations reading it.

5 comments about Pennsylvania Waterfalls: A Guide For Hikers And Photographers.
  1. This book made my insatiable quest for waterfalls very easy with great directions. Ricketts Glen State Park is one awesome hike!!

  2. Well written, put together so we could easily choose which hikes were for us. Excellent directions to some outstanding out of the falls. I can't rate this book highly enough. Just got back from our trip which this book planned.

    Bob (Southern Illinois)

  3. Pennsylvania Waterfalls is an excellent book on waterfalls in the Keystone state. While he doesn't cover every known falls in PA, Scott Brown hits almost all of the major, publicly accessible waterfalls. His inclusion of GPS coordinates, maps, and written directions makes them very easy to find (in most cases). His skill as a photographer is readily apparent throughout the entire book, and his insight into the composition of and equipment used for each picture should aid budding photographers. The book is well written, well researched, and covers a subject that's of interest to many but rarely published.

I did find a number of mistakes in the GPS coordinates and/or written driving directions to some of the falls, however. As a geocacher, I rely on accurate coordinates to find locations and in one instance I couldn't find the falls mentioned in the book. East Branch falls in Sullivan County wasn't in the location described by the book; it was actually 4/10ths of a mile away. The book's map was accurate but the coordinates and driving directions were not, and I missed out seeing that waterfall when I was in the area since I ran out of time hunting for it. Other falls where I've found the coordinates to be incorrect in the book include Second Falls, Logan Falls, and Seven Tubs. Still, in a book of 50+ falls, a few mistakes are bound to slip through. Unless you're using a GPS to navigate as I do, you'd probably never even notice most of these mistakes.

Even with the few errors, this book is extremely valuable for waterfalls hunters. I've added it to my own library, and I'd recommend anyone in the Keystone state with an interest in the magnificent beauty of falling water do the same.

  4. Really well written, beautifully photogaphed, and easy to understand guide, I absolutely love this. He tells you everything you need to know in order to get great shots at significant PA waterfalls. I'm a PA transplant currently living in Atlanta and bought this book for my trip next week. There's tons of falls I've never seen or heard of listed in the guide. I typically go to Ricketts Glenn every time I return home but im going to some of these other spots instead on this trip. BTW, his self portriats are really funny.

  5. Very good guide to all the photogenic spots in the entire PA as opposed to only specific parts of PA. There is very in depth suggestions for the serious photographers (of which I am not) that "point and shoot" photographers are really not going to use, but can at least use his recommendations for site location for the scene. I found the rating system very useful to help me decide which hikes were worth my time seeing on limited time. See also:

5 comments about My Heart vs. the Real World: Children with Heart Disease, In Photographs & Interviews.
  1. Not knowing anyone affected with Heart Disease, I approached this book from a photography standpoint. Taken by the photographs, I sat down and read the book and was immediately drawn in.

Woven into this book is Max's story. He is in the book, in words and pictures, telling his story of being a kid, like the kids in the book, growing up with heart disease. He tells us, his parents tell us, about his childhood with words and pictures and then gets into the stories of the kids in the book.

After reading Gerber's chapter on himself, one can't really look at the images of the kids the same. At it's best it seems like he is channelling the kids, finding aspects of himself in each kid to focus in on, which gives the photographs this kind of psychic power. When Gerber photographs a bunch of boys ripping open a present at a birthday party, it just seems to transcend the subject matter into a picture about wanting to have a normal life with small normal thrills.

The photographer isn't really just connecting with his subjects in this book, it seems like he is trying to figure something out thru them... and we are just here witnessing it all. By the time you get to the end of the book and see the shot of Gerber photographing himself in the mirror with two of the kids, the book kind of hits this emotional crescendo and you see what this is about. MG is using photography to understand his own life, thru these kids. The book was a document of this kind of personal fact-finding mission.

  2. this book is stunningly photographed and full of moving personal stories. it's inspiring and real. an utterly wonderful book.

  3. Wow........I got this book for my almost 10 year old son. He has TOF/DORV, had tons of complications, ending up in PICU for a year and emerging with lots of "accessories" including a trach, ventilator, oxygen, gtube, pacemaker and nurse 24/7. He has been without those lovely things (except the pacer) for many years now, but is starting to come to the realization that his life is different than many of his friends. Not tons different, but different. He has loved Camp Del Corazon, and we got this for him to continue to help him see that there are lots of kids who have had similar experiences.

So last night I grabbed it at 11:30pm and started flipping through it.....I was engrossed. I didn't put it down until 1:30am and I was in tears and very prayerful. Sometimes even with all that we have been through, and all the support he needs, I get caught up in the laundry, bills, shuttling kids to ballet/golf/physical therapy, and don't really remember how complicated and beautiful and terrifying his life is. How varied and amazing these kids are, yet they are tied together with such similar life experiences. This book, in it's beautiful (though solemn) photographs and words of the children and their parents, put on paper what we have known for years. That despite these struggles, these differences, this identity as the "heart kid", that these kids can find their own way in life and are richer and more compassionate for it.

Max Gerber did an amazing job with this book, and gave all of our kids a wonderful gift. It lets them meet other children and see the range of experiences in families dealing with various CHDs. This is a MUST BUY for you and your child. I am buying it as gifts for our Ped Cardiologist, and other families I know who are dealing with this as well. Bravo.

  4. Hi, I am "A Mom with a thirst for truth & knowledge"...

This book is a great book of photography and excerpts from each child and family. It highlights children growing up with congenital heart disease (CHD). Their personal accounts reveal their true feelings and by sharing their personal experiences, have inadvertently shown others how they have handled their own lives through extraordinary situations. These children and their families are an inspiration through their bravery and willingness to share their lives with the world.

Max has captured each subject magnificently through his excellent expertise and very revealing photography.

Hopefully this book will help bring about awareness to the many people who do not realize that Congenital Heart Defects are the number 1 birth defect in children. This beautiful book will help get that awareness out there and consequently help others with CHD!

Thanks for putting this book together Max, I appreciate all your hard work and I'm sure, many frustrations, that you have gone through over the past few years in compiling the materials for this book. I know and feel that your book will be a wonderful success and that the ultimate goal for this book will be an instrument of hope that gives other parents and children with CHD an understanding to those who have not experienced it.

My recommendation is that you purchase this elegant book of photography... experience it for yourself, share it with your children and families and enjoy it as much as I have.

  5. I recently bought this book out of curiosity really. My baby was recently born with Transposition of the Great Arteries, VSD and PS. This book allows me to take a look inside the lives, a voyeur if you will, of children growing up with CHD. It is inspiring and gives us "new" parents in the heart community hope of seeing our babies grow and flourish. Max Gerber has put into pictures and words exactly what heart parents are looking for to dream the dream of seeing their children progress and thrive! Thanks MAX!!

5 comments about Boink: College Sex by the People Having It.
  1. This book is different from most that I've seen. It contains both nude pictures and illustrated stories mixed between the photos. The writing is mostly focused on college experiences and the pictures have a "spring break" feel. The models are natural... not airbrushed and stylized like you'd find in Playboy, SI or Maxim. They have more of an amateur feel, which is not surprising since the book was put together by actual college students.

There's a good mix of girls and guys. Many of the spreads feature couples both guy/girl and girl/girl. There are also a number of solo spreads... basically something for almost everyone.

The reviewer that claims there are only pictures of men obviously hasn't really seen this book. But if you are homophobic and the sight of a naked guy freaks you out... then you should know that this isn't your typical men's publication that features only girls. But I personally find it sexier to see girls and guys together.

  2. I am sort of in the middle ground between the one reviewer that blasted the book and the others. On the one hand, I agree with the guy that was disappointed, but for different reasons. Does "no holds barred" for women mean girls that are skinny A-cups? There are a LOT of other body types in this world but you would never know it from the pics in this book. And to agree with the one star guy, these pictorials are FAR from no holds barred. They are tamer than even playboy other than the fact that a flacid penis is snuck in there occasionally. The girls are pretty but I wish there had been some other types of women than these skinny girls.

How is the writing? I think that for the most part, it is superb. As a kid, I was an avid reader and grew up prior to the advent of the internet. So, my titallation came from girlie mags and penthouse/Gallery letters. The writing in here is on par with those as far as explicitness goes but is far more realistic and literate. You find yourself living vicariously through the stories as opposed to simply being excited. I love the stories in this book. Please release another one!

  3. If you are looking for the cutting edge, you won't find it in Boink. The photography is of pretty people in a tropical setting in various combinations. It's fun and sexy and softcore, but it's not breaking any boundaries.

The "real college kids" angle is not fully realized. It doesn't convey the reality of college sex - at least in appearances. The writing is more successful, but hard to navigate. The table of contents does not tell you whether a piece of writing is fiction or non-fiction. On one hand, that means that it all COULD be real. On the other, you have no way of knowing what is real or not, which is an essential part of the appeal. The colleges are NOT named, as has been stated in some of the press coverage, and the authors are also not given their full bylines.

Another problem is the illustrations, which violate an essential rule of publishing - to not previsualize for the audience what they are supposed to imagine. The illustrations are often literal depictions of story content, rather than (like The New Yorker's presentation of short fiction) evocative pieces of artwork that underscore and accentuate what the audience is supposed to be feeling.

Boink is an admirable attempt to champion sex-positive expression in young adults, and has achieved a fun, tame, mainstream appeal. But they miss the essential aspect of their mission - to portray people as they really are, in the environments they really live in, doing the things they really do. And that means unflinching honesty and grit. Which is not found here.

  4. I love this book-- the photos are erotic and naughty but still maintain their class and are tasteful. I would definitely say that this book is geared towards a female audience however, but its still a very sex positive book and the stories inside are great!

  5. This book was really great except for the fact that I didn't find the tall blonde girl that attractive. She was kind of odd shaped and I didn't enjoy any picture that she was in. Also the male mexican was kind of "small". I found the book humorous but not erotic.

  1. This book is very interesting. The pictures offer a very special vision of our planet.

  2. Having followed Lanting's photo career since the origin of Nature Photographers of North America, we anxiously awaited his Life book and were not disappointed. Here is represented the beginnings of earth, after the Big Bang, and the geological results.

  3. This is a wonderful book! The photographs are simply stunning and the layout of the book is great. This is an excellent sample of Lanting's work.

  4. If you are not familiar with Franz Lanting's work this is an amazing first book to buy. It is full of stunning photos of a close approximation of the earth as it once was.

As has been said it makes a great coffee table book but is also a great addition to any library. For all the nature and photography enthusiasts out there, here is a great intro!

  5. I bought this as a gift for my borther-in-law and it was a huge hit. The photographs are staggeringly beautiful.

  1. Interseting photos but the text leaves a lot to be desired. It gives fleeting details only, with little or no liking for, or affinity with any of the subjects.

  2. I love this book! I initially bought it for my husband, who is a fan of the author's photos. However, it has quickly become a staple for my children's bedtime stories. We've been talking about the dogs and their escapades nonstop since it arrived. They have become completely involved in the lives of the dogs. They remember every detail of the stories and they've even added their own. It is so funny to hear them asking different questions and forming their own opinions as the doggy dramas unfold.

Okay - enough Mommy in this review. As a person in a creative field, this is a finely executed book. It has gorgeous photography lovingly rendered and is perfectly art directed.

  3. Wonderfully written, humorous descriptions of dogs (& one cat who thinks it's a dog) whom we have all owned and loved for their quirky behaviors! It would be a great book to read when you need a lift, or to use as short stories to read with a young child.
