5 comments about A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove (Wittliff Gallery Series).
- This is a wonderful book for any true Lonesome Dove fan.
The pics are beautifully done. They definitely have that look of an old-time western pic. I have to admit I have not yet read the forward by Larry McMurtry - I just wanted to dive right into the pics 1st.
Of course I'm glad I was able to get it from Amazon for $29.70 because there's no way I would have paid the $45 cover price for it.
- This book is an excellent book and was received in perfect condition. I recommend it for anyone who loves the rustic feel of the content. I have it in a log cabin on a book stand and people who visit love it. A very cozy book and pictures are great.
- I checked this book out at the local library and had only read the introduction when I knew I had to buy it. Then I saw the photo of Augustus McCray's face that made me burst into tears and I ordered it on Amazon. It came quickly and didn't disappoint.
- Hard to believe that it has been 20 years since the mini-series "Lonesome Dove" debuted on television. I remember sitting transfixed with my entire family before the TV screen for each night's new episode. I felt then, and still feel, that it was, if not the best western ever filmed, somewhere near the top. And what I loved so much about it, besides the authenticity of the costumes and sets, was that it stuck so closely to the novel, which I had read three years earlier. My admiration for that book was so great, I had stood in line for over an hour to have my copy signed when Larry McMurtry paid a visit to my hometown.
In commemoration of this anniversary, Bill Wittliff, who wrote the "Lonesome Dove" screenplay, has collected 112 sepia-toned photographs that he took during the filming of the mini-series. The opening photographs in the book are of Robert Duval standing on his mark, with camera equipment and reflectors poised, doing a costume check, except that Duval is already in character, his posture so clearly that of Gus McCrae. The next photo is of Tommy Lee Jones, likewise his costume check, and he, too, has already become the intense Woodrow Call.
"These are not just pictures from `Lonesome Dove,'" Harrigan writes in his Introduction, "they are documentary images of something that seems to have really happened." The passing of the mythical West perhaps, or a photographic journey through a hot and dusty bit of Texas History.
The book is well-made with high-quality glossy paper and an excellent binding. Several of the panoramic shots inside span across two pages, with some looking almost like Charles Russell paintings: a stolen horse stampede, cowboys riding herd, Indians on the prod. Others go beyond sheer moviemaking magic, like the ones with the great black thunderstorm roiling in the background.
"A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove" is not a book of movie stills or publicity shots. It isn't advertising for the novel or for the mini-series. Instead it is Wittliff's remarkable private photographic record showcasing the characters and the story, and if the faces weren't so familiar, the scenes would seem almost to have been pulled out of some photo history of a 19th-century cattle drive.
- I've been in love with Gus since the Mini series and now have him in these wonderful photos. This book is awesome. You can almost hear "Laurie Darlin", and the smells of the trail. The book is dedicted to Pea Eye which was very nice. Thanks to the author.

- Burtynsky shoots stunning pictures. There are many great photographers (and photography books) out there but his pictures are full of color and precision and the subject matter is a wonder to behold.
- It is a big big book. The compositions are powerful, the colors, and the details. You are realy in there, in the depth, the immensity of the quarries. For those who know quarries, it is a real travel. Amazing.

- The book is good. It have very good pictures. But I expected that it have more text and explain you more about the stylist career.
- As a fashion journalist, I served as a reference as a creative director very much.
Expect next edition.
- I Bought this book in January... (with another 2 books)
AND SINCE THIS DAY AMAZON SAY TO ME THAT HAD SENT MY PACK 5 TIMES,
BUT NEVER ARRIVED...
So, a book, and a website NEVER stressed me so MUCH....
- The book itself is gorgeous and looks great in any library. As far as content, I was expecting more information on the featured stylists as well as more stylists in general. There are so many more that are more facinating and creative. It just seems as though the other featured her posse and that was it.

- difficult to be honnest when you're a Steve McCurry fan !
the quality of selected images is great
this book is now in my hand bag !
- Excellent example of portrait technique - lighting, backgroud - as well as value and power of color photgraphy. So often B&W is held up as standard of serious color portrait photography, yet we see in color. The fact that these hundreds of photos came from one photgrapher speaks volumes about his rapport with his subjects - although he doesn't actually offer any details - which is a slight weakness of the book. Steve McCurry does not offer any insight into how he gets such open, unblinking moments with those he photgraphs. But never mind, you can learn a lot about photgraphy by just seeing this small compact book - with what appears to be very good binding. His very famous cover shot reminds that any photographer has only a handful of great, memorable photos that are gifted to us by time and place. A really good photo book!
- I received this book as a gift and love it. The collection of close portraits spanning the entire globe makes for compelling viewing. I also like the "pocket" size (the book is about 5x7 inches in size). I do wish some of the colours were a bit more saturated and vivid... still, as a aspiring photographer, it is an inspirational book.
- the photographs when seen in national geographic's publications are indeed beautiful. that is why it is such a pity that they are compiled in a small book that is hard to open and is rather flatly printed.
- What a beautiful tribute to mankind. In everyone's face there is a story. And I'm sure no one can forget the eyes of that sad and pensive-looking young girl from Afghanistan. I chose my favorites and titled them. This book, although small, is a perfect table book. As you leaf through it, you need to go slowly to catch what Mr. McCurry intended to depict. And one can't help but dub this book `the uniqueness and sometimes commonness of mankind.'

4 comments about Our World.
- Simply the name Mary Oliver causes a shift in my countenance and my being. My steps are different when I am present to who she is as a writer and human being, so it shouldn't surprise me, what happened this morning.
I was minding my own business walking across my local bookstore when I heard the sound of wind rushing from my mouth. It was like the jolt happened so quickly my brain couldn't quite orient around the words, "Our World" and the names Mary Oliver and Molly Malone Cook.
I had no choice. I had to stop all my other book plans and sit with this one, just be with it, soak it in, allow it to do its work on my soul as I knew intuitively it would.
Last winter I became the self-appointed one woman marketing machine for Mary Oliver's "Thirst" - a collection of poetry written as she grieved the loss of her life partner, Molly Malone Cook, someone who I never knew yet felt I knew through reading Oliver's work. I stood at a bookstore crying as I read that book, sobbing, openly - aching and simultaneously being stunned by the beauty of the poetry.
Now, in this volume, not only do I have words - I have Molly Malone Cook's photography.
It is like being invited into the most intimate chambers of a lifetime soul-love affair. It is deeply personal, extremely intense memoir of love. That energy is on each page as Oliver builds a model of appreciation for Molly Malone Cook for us all to follow.
Now, the "other" juicy stuff - photos by Molly Malone Cook that show a deep love and appreciation of books, of learning, of activism, of art and of the "faces of the world" - one of her early childhood ambitions, so it tells us in the text "was to see every face in America."
Well, in these photographs "every" face is, indeed, communicated.
We see photographers, playwrights, restaurateurs, activists and places the writers and artists among us dream about seeing.
There are too many numerous memorable quotes to share here - and I don't want to take away your own discovery of words that speak directly to you.
I know I will be forever grateful for the work of Mary Oliver and this volume amplifies that gratitude by bringing Molly Malone Cook to life for me in a more vivid way than in the past.
I can only hope there will be many more opportunities for my heart and breath to be swept away, simply by seeing this author's name on a book jacket.
- I just loved this book. Somehow it opened an intimate window into the life of Molly Malone Cook, without ever disrespecting the sacred nature of her life. Mary Oliver does this with grace. They clearly shared their lives together, yet still kept their individuality intact. Mary Oliver remarks, towards the end of the book, on her own recognised gift for attention. She goes on to pay tribute to Molly for teaching her this: "attention without feeling, I began to learn, is only a report. An openess - an empathy - was necessary is the attention was to matter." This tribute inspires me to continue the journey towards greater presence in my life.
- OUR WORLD BY MARY OLIVER IS A MEMOIR AND A TRIBUTE TO MS. OLIVER'S LONG TIME PARTNER AND FRIEND WHO WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER OF NOTE. MANY OF MS. OLIVER'S PARTNER'S PHOTOS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS BOOK. FOR THOSE WHO APPRECIATE MS. OLIVER'S POETRY, THERE ARE NOT MANY POEMS IN THIS MEMOIR. IT IS A THOROUGHLY ENJOYABLE BOOK, HOWEVER, AND ONE THAT GIVES THE READER A GLIMPSE INTO HER PRIVATE WORLD.
ANNA M. SEIDLER
- This is a great read. I had just heard of Mary's work and ordered quite few of her books. They are all wonderful. She has such a wonderful way to look at nature and the world in general.

5 comments about The Digital Filmmaking Handbook (Digital Filmmaking Series).
- An excellent one stop guide to getting started in digital filmmaking, realizing of course, that there is no film involved.
This book starts with selecting the things like the type of camera you need to make digital video. And for good work, a good camera is necessary, and expensive. IThe book is intended for the person who is just getting started. It explains the terms, the basic equipment you will need, and so on.
The concept of making a film, no, a video starts with a story. From here you need a script. Then you do a story board to plan your shoot. If this sounds a bit professional, it is. This book presumes that you are serious about making a video. This is a rough cut at what the pros do to make a film. ==From this book alone you probably won't get to the Academy Awards show, but reading and putting into practice what the book says might get you into a commercial or a local indistrial film production.
All in all a good summary of getting started in the digital AV business.
- Ben Long and Sonja Schenk's DIGITAL FILMMAKING HANDBOOK THIRD EDITION pairs a fine DVD packed with project files, film clips and tutorials with an updated, revised edition of a best-selling guide to new digital video technologies. Chapters have all been revised to cover the latest hardware and software configurations and new exercises provide help with everything from writing to production. Black and white screen shots and examples throughout make DIGITAL FILMMAKING HANDBOOK a one-step resource.
- If you're like me, just getting started as a hobbyist filmmaker, this is the book. I only received it yesterday and glancing through the contents, it covers most, if not all of the questions I've had about certain aspects of filmmaking. It is well written in everyday english, easy to understand.
Since yesterday when I first opened the cover, I haven't been able to set it down for very long. It's that good. I highly recommend this book to any and all levels of individuals who want to learn about filmmaking from the ground up. It covers it all.
- It is not a product specific... Not Premiere or Mac stuf only... A lot of theorya and a lot of pratices tips also.
- nice reference guide. the oldschool pinkus book is probably better, although less focused on video.

5 comments about The Portrait Photographers Posing Guide: How to pose people for portraits.
- The Portrait Photographers Posing Guide by Nigel Holmes is a little gem of a book (122 pages, about 5"x8") for novice portrait photographers.
It includes posing suggestions for groups, families, couples, individuals, men, women, children, and babies. It includes poses that are formal and informal. It includes suggestions for problem areas (for example, big chins, reflections off glasses) and for posing hands (10 pages!). What I really like is the four easy steps to create a head and shoulders portrait.
At the end of the book is a section with more poses:
- ideas for men (13 poses)
- ideas for women (27 poses)
- ideas for mother and children (3 poses)
- ideas for families (3 poses)
- ideas for couples (20 poses)
The book focuses on posing and does not address other portrait topics like equipment or lighting.
A book on posing but contains no photographs? That's right! All the illustrations are cartoons, and the cartoons work surprisingly well.
Criticisms (for which I deducted one star): The book is self-published and shows it. There is no table of contents. The index is poor (for example, the topic of "noses" is found at the entry "A Good Nose"). There are no chapters. There is no apparent organization.
I like this book better than professionally-published books (such as "Master Posing Guide for Portrait Photographers" by J.D. Wacker, 8.5"x11", beautiful color portaits throughout--a book I also own) because this book is simple, easy to grasp, and states specific things to do.
The book does not provide information about the author. Based on the fact that the publisher is "Nigel Holmes Enterprises" in England, he is probably a British glamor photographer, not to be confused with another Brit with the same name who is a graphic designer.
- I see a lot of reviewers complaining about the size of the book.
In actuality, if you're taking photos of people, every page should be memorized. The examples in this book are all over magazines and publications. The author have a good sense of humor, I can appreciate.
This book is short, sweet and to the point.
DeZ5 - Photography, Video and Audio engineer.
- I like it, anyone can find help from this. If you are new to Portraiture, then buy it. But, it is a small paperback, and overpriced for what you get......
- Easy to digest and very helpful. I think the layout and organization was brilliant! It's nice to have great info, but it's even nicer to really be able to take it all in!
When I was first searching for a book, I wanted something that showed me a lot of photos ... I'm glad I got this instead because all the details that come from photos could distract from what I was really after: learning how to pose! (I'm a sucker for getting lost in the eyes, figuring out the lighting techniques, etc.)
Great purchase!
- I just received this book. As a novice portrait photographer with many books, I found this one to be an excellent primer on posing. Cartoonish characters, I thought, would be detrimental. I was wrong. It actually works very well by drawing your attention to the outline instead of the model. The back section on model posing in outline form for single, couples, groups was the most helpful portion of any book I have. I would like an entire book on just posing ideas, particularly for head and shoulder shots.

- Gursky's work is of course wonderful, BUT... This is not a collection of photographs--it's a collection of essays. There are about 15 full-size photos and about 60 2" x 3" photos embedded in the text. Good if you want to read about the master. Not good if you want to see the master's work.
- wonderful printing.
it's more enjoyable than huge original print.
well made hard cover.
