5 comments about The Songs of Insects.
  1. I have long wanted to know what insects I am hearing every summer and now have a chance of knowing which ones they are. The imagery is fantastic. The range maps will be a blessing to my students as they try to determine what type of katydid or cicada and so on they have nabbed for their bug collection.

The audio CD is great too! The only drawback there is that the holding compartment in the back of the book is poor. Right after I got this book I was taking it to school and the brand new CD fell out of the pouch and onto the pavement. Now its scratched and I don't know what to do. I usually make a backup of all my CDs right away but failed to do so with this one!

This book came to my attention when I wrote in my blog about the microphone I positioned in my backyard. I use it to listen to crickets and lots of other creatures out back, sometimes all night long.

  2. This book and included CD was the answer for learning all the insect sounds on my field recordings and nocturnal adventures. Good pictures for seeing what you heard really looks like, as well as good descriptions with the general range of each species noted. Excellent quality recordings on the CD.

  3. This book has provided hours of fantastic entertainment for the family. We love looking at the pictures, listening to the sounds and then trying to identify the crickets that we find.
This book should be in every family's library. Get your kids outside and play!

  4. As other reviewers have stated, this is a remarkable resource for insect identification. I would like to comment on the quality of the images. I found that a remarkable effort and attention to detail that went into these images. In far too many books the conversion of images from digital to print looks like the author doesn't know or doesn't care how his images look. For Lang Elliott this was not the case. He meticulously ensured that the printed images have remarkable depth of field and colors. I found any number of them to be remarkable pieces of photographic art. I felt guilty for only paying $13.57 for this book.

  5. My husband and I enjoy the song of the cricket.......we didn't understand that so many varieties of crickets existed... Having the photos in front of us while listening to the cd songs is a very good feature. My husband finds listening to the cricket songs relaxing also. I would certainly purchase other quality items from the people who created this....probably birds or just cricket songs. Now we know more about the world we live in.

  1. This text was hardcover and gorgeous.. and over 1/2 off what the bookstore at my school was selling it for.. Thank you

  2. i had to buy this for class, and for once it isn't a "textbook" ! finally an art textbook that doubles as a coffee table book, and one you can read. very good text - easy, and not too "academic." highly recommend.

  3. An exellent source. The price was unbeatable. At school a smaller version of this book was over $100 and I paid less than $50for a more complete book!

  4. I found photography a Cultural History a very hard to read book. The author seems to jump from subject to subject and from photographer to photographer without any cohesive meaning. The chapters get harder to read as you move towards the later chapters, unfortunately. I don't see what is the sense to mentioning what a photogrpher did or said in a 2 or 3 sentence paragraph, then jump to another photographer and do the same, then jump to another one and do the same and so on and so on. Also, why is the photographers years of existence printed next to each photographers name in parenthesis ? This only makes the book even harder to read. I bought the book because I'm a photography student and the book is mandatory for one of the required courses, but if it was up to me, I would rather use and purchase "The History of Photography" written By Beaumont Newhall even though it is out of date. This was the book originally used in the past, but a few years ago allot of schools decided to switch to the Warner Marien book which I think was a big mistake.

  5. great condition thanks

  1. When I received the book, the pages were almost loose from the cover, so I did send it back to Amazon. However, the contents are really nice. I do understand the comment from the people about the problem with the photo's on 2 pages, but they still remain very impressive photo's.

I also would like to add here that I only have compliments about the way Amazon has handled the problem with the (almost) loose cover. They came very quick with very good solutions.

  2. I have enjoyed this book for about three years and have given it to 10 of my friends as a gift. Just fabulous! Worth its weight in gold ... and it is very heavy!!

  3. A book of wonderful aerial vistas. I first saw many of these pictures in The Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. This book allows me to continuously look at them. One never gets tired of the images. This book provides a feast for your eyes and shows clearly the wonders of nature. The only shortcoming is that many of the pictures are two pages in breath and are broken up by the book's mid- seam.

  4. Wonderful book not only with stunning photos but deals with global conflicts of earth and humans.

Love the TV series on the same by Yann and I wanted a companion book for the same. Excellent...

Book arrived from amazon in time.

  5. The book is exactly as advertised, in perfect condition. Delivered quickly. Would definitely recommend this seller. Thanks!

5 comments about Ocean.
  1. NOT 500 pages and if I had paused to read the item description properly I wouldn't have bought this book! Way too good a price to be true, it is not another edition of the wonderful Cousteau-forwarded book, but a perfectly respectable DK full-color children's book with many very nice color photos. Probably very worth $7.99 and I was just far too greedy to read the fine print.

  2. This book is not a typical "coffee table" book. Although full of beautiful photographs, there is equal emphasis on educational text. Instead of being a book containing only full-page photos of ocean life, each page is a collage of wonderful photos and short articles that you will want to read. The publisher of this book (DK), offers a variety of books in this format (travel, etc), and the layout of this book is similar. That is not to knock the photos at all - they are great and some are full-page, but this book isn't page after page of full-page photos as some others are.

That said, this is an excellent educational text with so much interesting information to offer. (It made me want to read the book cover-to-cover, which would probably keep me busy for at least a few days!)

The four main sections of the book include:

    Introduction
    Ocean Environments
    Ocean Life
    Atlas of the Oceans

The Introduction section takes a scientific look at the earth. A sampling of the topics of this section include "The Evolution of the Oceans", "Tectonics and the Ocean Floor", "Hurricanes", and "El Nino and La Nina". Mixed in with the photos are a number of color drawings and graphs to help the reader understand the concepts.

The section on Ocean Environments includes articles on specific places like San Francisco Bay and Hardanger Fjord as well as general information on habitats such as Salt Marshes, Mangrove Swamps and Rocky Sea Beds. The pages are full of photos of the areas as well as typical species found there.

The largest section is on Ocean Life and focuses on the variety of creatures found in the sea. Exhibited within these pages are a number of amazing photos of plants and animals that I had not seen before (though I'm not an expert on this subject) including creatures such as the Glass Squid, the Blue-Ringed Octopus and the Goblin Shark. I thoroughly enjoyed the short paragraph articles describing unique aspects of the species shown as well as the longer texts on topics like "Echinoderms" that includes anatomy, reproduction, feeding and defense sub-articles.

The last section is Atlas of the Oceans and includes maps of the different oceans and text describing them.

Again, the focus of this book is learning, not just amazing photography, and it does an excellent job of offering a smorgasbord of articles on different topics. If you really want to learn about the ocean and its inhabitants while paging through fantastic photographs, you will thoroughly enjoy this book!

  3. This is a huge book packed with information and gorgeous photography. There is plenty of science contained in these glossy pages from how the planets in our solar system formed, to the breakup and movement of our land masses to their current day positions, ocean currents, weather, ecology, glacial periods, and so much more. Most of the first half of the book is devoted to these subjects. The second half of the book gets into ocean life, from the smallest to the largest, how they live, feed, defend themselves. The pictures are breathtaking. This is a great educational book for all family members. Trust me, this one won't just sit around on your coffee table.

  4. This book contains stunning pictures, interesting fact and information, information on the most spectacular beaches and ocean crated phenomena, tidal and wave phenomena, weather related phenomena, and information on many, many species of sharks, whales, jellyfish, fish, crabs, coral, etc. A must buy for any ocean/nature lovers, nonfiction coffee table book fans/collectors, or anyone who just love interesting facts and appreciates stunning photography.

  5. huge, bottomless, overwhelming as the worlds oceans this awesome tome provides hours of mind blowing eye candy with great educational text.this book uses state of the art photography & excellent graphics.dk are the best when it comes to visual guides.

5 comments about Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd.
  1. I purchased this item for my son who has been a Pink Flyod/Waters fan since high school. He told me about this book at Christmas, and he is absolutely thrilled with it. The photos are wonderful and the history of Floyd incredible. If you are a die-hard fan, get this book. You won't be disappointed!

  2. As a true Pink Floyd fan I can sincerely say that this book does a great job in telling the story of this great band.

  3. Detached music journalists and assorted types of hangers-on often attempt to write biographies of famous bands, but for the real goods it's always best to get it from the inside. It also helps if the band member in question can actually write. Nick Mason appears to have an acceptably clear memory on 40 years worth of history and his writing style is enjoyable, making this book the definitive Pink Floyd biography so far. Nick's style is often funny and self-deprecating, and while some of his historical details contradict other sources (such as who sang lead on certain songs) the book certainly has the feel of an authentic source. Also, as the writer Nick is entitled to talk about his own life, but fortunately he does so sparingly and humbly. Just watch out for some of that dry British humor which doesn't always translate too well, or frequent chunks of barely comprehensible Britspeak like "looked after the punts for rent on the Cam."

The great advantage of this book is that unlike many rock biographies, Nick covers all periods of Pink Floyd's history relatively equally, from the early amateur schoolboy days to the overblown megatours of the 1990s, instead of focusing on certain periods that an outside writer (or fan) would find more interesting than others. As a result, we learn a lot about the personalities within the band and their associates, and a fair amount about their creative processes. Most importantly, Nick provides some quite authoritative insights into the band's biggest stories - most notably the sad mental collapse of Syd Barrett, the ugly legal battle between David Gilmour and Roger Waters in the later years, and the 2005 reunion at Live 8. And upon witnessing this book's rich illustrations, you'll be glad that Nick and his friends have been faithfully carrying cameras around for so many years. [~doomsdayer520~]

  4. For those looking for the detailed low-down on why Pink Floyd achieved intense fame before the celebrity of their faces being recognized on the street, other reviewers have said 'search elsewhere'. Nick, though a fine writer, reveals few tidbits that the more fanatical PF fan wouldn't know. However, the inadvertant genius of the book is certainly its timing, and I'm fortunate to write this review a few years after its release. Of second mention is that drummer Nick Mason opens a sort of secret door on how small the world artistic community is, even if you don't subscribe to the six-degrees-of-separation theory.

On April 15, 2005, I attended Nick's book signing at Seattle's Experience Music Project, where he simply answered the standard questions fans throw out about Syd, Dark Side of the Moon and the Wall, will the Floyd ever reunite... For my part, I asked how he felt about the recent settlement (for hundreds of thousands of pounds) with Claire Torry, singer on The Great Gig in the Sky. He felt she got paid long ago, but people always seem to want more. He is actually a very quiet, normal guy, and can be transparent in his emotions. If he were American, he'd be watching NASCAR. Nick explained he had to get on and write the book quickly, as people who knew the band's intimate history were already passing. More on that presently.

Well, to everyone's surprise, Pink Floyd reunited to play Live 8 on July 2, 2005, to show their support for African Debt relief. Perhaps we have Nick Mason to thank, as he has undoggedly served as 'negotiator' between Roger Waters and the rest of the band, and not grudgingly maintaining friendship with Waters through all these years.

Throughout Nick's book, it is clear PF has spent an enormous amount of their wealth funding and backing philanthropic enterprises. That they should reunite just once for Live 8 shows their combined continued commitment to causes. For those who missed the show, AOLs broadcast was the best. A literally touching moment came during the stage bow when Richard Wright reached around the shoulder's of Dave and Nick to touch Roger's arm. Recall that Roger vociferously demanded Wright's outing from the band, resulting in Rick's non-appearance on The Final Cut. Nick speaks a lot about Roger's less-than-appreciation of Rick on p.247.

Also, we did lose Syd Barrett in July, 2006.

The book's photos put together in one place a sort of cut-short family album. There are Nick's personal photos of his meeting with Jimi Hendrix. (We don't see Hendrix's photos of Nick.) There's a photo of people on the beach with toddler-age Naomi Watts, daughter of PF road manager Peter Watts. Readers attempting to piece together a broader picture of the band will appreciate Nick's focus on gadgets the band used for sound and image enhancement. In that, one can see the PF propensity for technological superiority and delicateness, before the arms race for decibels reached fever pitch in the 70s.

The naysayers might comment that the book is too picture-bound, but one must strongly consider the band's emphasis throughout their career on imagery. It is commendable that Pink Floyd used every available gimmick to expose their work to the public. Cynics may say that have enough money, but for artists, it is as much a giving relationship through the expression of music and its requisite ancillary cover and stage art. That the band members have private lives is difficult for us to fathom. Nick Mason subtely ensures we're aware of that.

  5. Nick Mason writes a very clean and detailed history of Pink Floyd without the tabloid gossip that probably would have sold more copies. He is an English gentleman first and foremost. This book is light on 'dirt' but does cover the entire career of Pink Floyd very well. There are hints along the way which would suggest that Nick Mason spent some time getting plastered with various celebrities at various points over the years, but rather than focus on 'who shagged who', he covers the subject material with clear language and balanced tones. All of the major subjects are covered... what happened to 'Syd', what happened during the 'divorce' of Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, etc. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and did receive a fresh perspective on several subjects that I had already been introduced to.

5 comments about The Compleat Squash: A Passionate Grower's Guide to Pumpkins, Squashes, and Gourds.
  1. This book is beautiful to look at, has a great deal of interesting history, useful gardening information, and some good recipes. Also it is inspirational, makes you want to source the rarer seeds and get out there with the spade. I don't know how much of this information is readily available in America, but here in Britain, where growing squash still mostly means butternut or Jack o' Lantern, the book is a revelation.

    Highly recommended

  2. This is a very visually attractive book, with superb photographs, but this is not just for the coffee table. For the devotee who grows pumpkins, all the information needed is there, down to conditions and seed sources for an amazing selection of varieties. For the cook, there are some unusual recipes, but also the eating quality of each type of pumpkin. Essential, this. Some are delicious, others vile. Lots of historical and other info & stories too. Pumpkins are my passion. I grew them, I eat them and now I paint them. It was great to get this book and know there are other squash nutters out there.

  3. At this time, this is the most comprehensive volume on the Cucurbita genus. A good personal narrative, coupled with sublime photography. My only quibbles are that none of the images show cut open fruit, to give a view of the flesh and cavity. Secondly, that quite a number of internationally known cultivars are not mentioned. Nevertheless, an absolute "must have" for pumpkin and squash devotee.

  4. The Compleat Squash: A Passionate Grower's Guide to Pumpkins, Squashes, and Gourds What a great book. Good information about the squash family and recipes that are to die for. She will introduce you to a new world of a great vegetable. This book will become a family heirloom.

  5. I love this book -- sometimes I think it spends more time off the bookshelf being thumbed through than resting on it. Here you have practically everything you need to grow squashes - what the squashes are best used for, some history of the various varieties, selecting seeds, growing and harvesting tips, and (extremely useful!)commercial sources of most of the seeds(many of which you can find easily online), all nicely organized by which Cucurbita species they belong to. (The growing guide to gourds is for C. pepo gourds, not Lagenaria species, and so the title is certainly appropriate growing C. pepo gourds, of which there are many) And recipes too -- so useful! Goldman is extremely helpful in pointing out the virtues and flaws of each variety for eating (though she tries some I wouldn't dare -- brave woman). The photographs are so beautiful as to be absolutely seductive -- watch out, you too will be saying to yourself 'I must grow that pumpkin/squash/gourd/whatever'. Then you too will be seeking out the seed suppliers, tenderly planting your new seeds and now in late summer, seeing them beginning to mature, turning into the fruit promised in the gorgeous photographs, murmur to yourself 'You are so beautiful, Sucrine du Berry. And Winter Luxury, you are the most elegantly lovely pumpkin I have ever seen..."

5 comments about Seizing the Light: A History of Photography.
  1. Seizing the Light: A History of Photography. is a wonderfully broad, contemporary, eclectic and entertaining book. Robert Hirsch has produced the most useful, readable, and practical successor to Beaumont Newhall's classic, The History of Photography, first published in 1937. Seizing the Light is written in a friendly, accessible way -- dense with information, but more hip and lively than other offerings, especially those aimed at college students. Hirsch includes the "canon" of standard western photographic history (represented by Stieglitz, Weston, Adams, White, et. al.) first set forth by Newhall and other researchers, but updates the information with special emphasis on the last five decades of photographic practice, including digital imaging.

Many teachers and interested readers will greatly appreciate Hirsch's conscious effort throughout the book, to include numerous women and photographers from other cultures. (Chapter Two opens with an image of an American Indian, and includes a portrait of an African-American, affording students the realization that marginalized groups actually did appear as subjects before the camera in addition to working behind them.)

Students will also appreciate Hirsch's habit of opening new chapters with a description of cultural and political events occurring during the period under discussion: Chapter Twelve starts with a harrowing description of life for immigrants in New York City in the late Nineteenth Century during the time of Jacob Riis, and Chapter Seventeen has a helpful summary of the ending of the Vietnam War, connecting it smoothly to such diverse influences as Richard Nixon and the BeeGees! There are also wonderful endnotes following each chapter that are absolutely addictive, giving curious readers further information and surprising tidbits of information.

Hirsch's knowledge gained as a Director of CEPA Gallery in Buffalo (a contemporary non-profit Artist's space) provides him with exceptional insight into contemporary photography. This is especially evident in his last Chapter, Eighteen, "Thinking About Photography," which abounds with infrequently seen and challenging images by Arnulf Rainer, Nam June Paik, John Baldessari, Anselm Keifer, Gilbert and George, William Wegman and the Bechers. There is a clear and helpful section on Postmodernism, including the usual suspects: Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, and Victor Burgin. There are sections on "Gender Issues" with Judith Golden, as well as one on "Fabrications" with Sandy Skoglund, Olivia Parker, Joel Peter Witkin and others. "Altering Time and Space" includes David Hockney, the Starn Twins, and the delicious hand-colored work of Holly Roberts. Other sections include "Investigating the Body" (Andres Serrrano, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann) and "Multiculturalism" (Clarissa Sligh, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, and the Guerilla Girls). Hirsch closes this bulging chapter with a discussion of digital imaging, including images by Pedro Meyer, Nancy Burson and several rising young artists in new media. He concludes with an extensive bibliography of related books and resources, a helpful list of monographs by the major artists presented throughout the text, and a section on sources for artists' books.

Robert Hirsch has produced a most impressive and useful book that readers will find engaging and relevant. The currency and eclectic nature of Hirsch's thought is fascinating and his book serves as a much-needed supplement to existing texts in the history of photography.

(Submitted by Brian Taylor, Professor of Art and Design at San Jose State University, where he has taught the History of Photography for 25 years. Prior to that, he studied with Beaumont Newhall for three years during graduate school at the University of New Mexico.)

  2. For everyone with an interest in photography, either as an artist of the medium, a beginner looking for direction, or a collector who wants informed background to enhance appreciation of fine photographs both from the past and from the present obsession, SEIZING THE LIGHT: A History of Photography is essential reading.

Robert Hirsch knows his subject and in one hefty book manages to share the beginnings of photography some 200 years ago with the evolution of the camera and the discipline of photographing. Well illustrated with both photographs and drawings, Hirsch chronicles the famous and not so famous practitioners of the art in succinct but richly colorful biographical abstracts to accompany examples of each artist. The phases through which this art form has passed makes for fascinating reading even beyond the scope of the title: the use of the camera in documenting the history of our globe at celebration, at war, at discovery, and at the side of the people of the day is a journey well lead by a writer well skilled.

Though this book is now six years old it remains one of the more important textbooks for the art school classroom. But more important it is so richly written that it remains a fascinating survey of life since the camera. From the beginnings of the pinhole box to the present day digital images on the cell phone etc, the invention of the camera has inextricably changed our perception of the world. Learn the how and why of it! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

  3. Overall a great book on the history of photography. VERY comprehensive overview of the evolution of photography. It ties movements in art and social events into photography trends and developments. It also provides insight into how photographers and artists used the medium to express themselves and how experimentation lead to improvements over the years. My only negative comment would be that some of the earlly forms of cameras were not pictured. There were diagrams of early cameras, but after the first hundred years, there is little to no documentation on how they evolved cosmetically/ functionally. It'd be nice to see an example of the various "groundbreaking" cameras as they were discussed. Otherwise, a great book.

  4. Robert Hirsch's survey of the origins and evolution of photography, "Seizing the Light," is a welcome addition to the expanding study of the medium. In clear, insightful, and engaging prose, Hirsch unfolds photography's hit-or-miss birth which was rapidly followed by coherent technological developments almost at the speed of light. Hirsch makes us believe that photography was inevitable; the darling and necessary child of destiny wed to information theory. And Hirsch's treatment of early 20th century Modernist photography and the philosophy behind Pictorialism is excellent.

As a primer for the invention of photography and its chemical underpinnings, "Seizing the Light" is as good as it can be. It falls a little short, however, in its treatment of contemporary photography. The book would have been better served by including a few in-depth surveys of important contemporary photographic projects in order to emphasize the centrality of this discipline in contemporary art history and postmodern theory which is heavily dependent on the nature of images and processes of image-making.

  5. I'll make it clean cut here; the buyer gave me what I wanted and the item is in great shape. What else could I ask for? Very happy and the delivery was of average speed.

4 comments about Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age.
  1. As a photographer and college photography educator, I'm extremely excited about Robert Hirsch's new book Light & Lens: Photography in the Digital Age. We have adopted it in our photography department at Santa Fe Community College in New Mexico. I consider this an unusual textbook; even a pioneer book because of how it blurs the line between textbook and art book.

It is an ambitious work in that it presents an immense amount of complex technical information very clearly and succinctly without leaving anything out, weaves historical information throughout, challenges students (everyone!) to "think critically" about the photograph and their own work at every turn, coaches, encourages, and it is ALSO beautifully designed - giving each artwork featured a real presence that inspires students. It is obvious Hirsch is a generous educator, active photographer, and thinker.

The layout is elegant - really elegant (it even has a dust jacket!) so students and photography enthusiasts are buying an "art book" that has value beyond its wealth as a textbook.

The scale of the book is about 7X17" opened with about 400 pages but looks small and is lightweight which I think was smart for a `heavyweight' subject. It can be held comfortably in the hand for good contemplative reading or placed easily on a small digital work station where it can be used as a technical reference or reference for the many innovative assignments included.

It was obviously designed for those who love photography and want to see (or have their student's see) a bigger "picture" about image making in the digital age. It is for the instructor who sees students intimidated by the larger digital texts that are completely techie-oriented and don't usually address the important issues of personal process, critical theory, and the content and context of imagery. Here is a wonderful marriage of the craft and content of making photographs in the digital age and the book's physicality exemplifes that too.

  2. I got this book for class, I already knew most the stuff in it. But it listed a lot of good information, as well as technical info. I recommend it, for anyone interested in digital photography.

  3. We paid for speedier shipping- it took 8 days to receive

The bottom of the box was open. I'm surprised the book stayed in.

  4. This is an excellent book for any photographer, but especially for digital photographers. You will loose you photographic inhibition the deeper you get into the books chapters. It is exciting to know there are new discoveries in style and technique to be made in digital photography. All you have to do is pick up your camera and start making images.

5 comments about Painter X for Photographers: Creating Painterly Images Step by Step.
  1. I love this book. the dvd instruction gets one immediately into practice // and soon enough gets your head spinning with a smorgasbord of creative possibilities. the author gives detailed instructions regarding cloning, layering, painting, and montages, etc. I highly recommend this book for aspiring photo/artists, digital artists, photo/artists and photographers delving into the digital world. Yes, there are other painterX books out there...but this seems to be the one for me. thank you mr. addison.

  2. I am a photographer, not an artist, who wanted to be able to create paintings and sketches from my photographs. When I first got Painter X I found it intimidating and did not find the help and tutorials very helpful. After reading reviews here, I purchased Martin Addison's Painter X for Photographers and it has been great for getting me going fast.

It is geared towards photographers wanting to make artwork from their photos, but Martin covers all the background info as well. I followed all the tutorials on the cd and then worked through the book. His style is clear and easy to follow and he is actually quite charming. I feel like I have a solid mastery of Painter X now and can proceed to learn and explore more with confidence. I am so glad I bought THIS book!

  3. The way this book is organized and the quantity of exercises has done a great job of introducing me to Painter X. I did some video tutorials before buying this book and didn't remember a thing once I was done viewing them. But the combination of reading the text and doing the exercises at my own pace instead of trying to keep up with a video has given me a good idea of what I can do with Painter. The exercises are great because you feel like you've really achieved something with each one and that you could duplicate the effect on your own images. I only used the accompanying DVD to copy the practice images (there are a couple missing that you can download from the author's website). I would recommend this book as an excellent beginner's text with the caveat that you probably need to have a good working knowledge of other graphics programs (like Photoshop) to use the book or you might get stuck following along in the excercises for lack of detail.

  4. This book is fabulous! The video tutorials are crystal clear.
It' just loaded with pracitical, easy to find knowledge.
I especially liked the Choosing Brushes section which gave examples of what each type of brush can do.
    Highly recommended.

  5. This is a truly helpful book if you wish to create a very professional looking painting from a photo but have never painted before. Easy to follow instructions can turn you into a painter in a very short time.Within a week I was astonishing my clients with my new found skills.By combining photos and than painting them I can create a very original painting that has become my trademark in within a month.

  1. Since I love Italy as a place to visit, this book is great to own.

  2. This is the best for someone wanting to visit interesting places in Italy. It is not only well arranged and written, but it helped so much in trip planning. I highly recommend this to anyone traveling on their own to Italy.

  3. Great service and beautiful pictures of Tuscany but somewhat dissapointed at the lack of an organized route map for efficient traveling to the various villages.

  4. Yes, the photos are nice, but how many coffee table books with pretty Tuscan villages, cypress trees, and silvery olive leaves shimmering in the wind do we need?

Someone who reviewed this book suggested bringing it along on a Tuscan trip; if you put this large and heavy book in your luggage, you will have to leave the toothpaste, underwear, and a number of other things at home, particularly now that some airlines are apparently toying with the notion of lowering weight allowances and charging for the excess.

The text in most instances is not particularly helpful. There are quite a few books on Tuscany that do a much better job. And I was truly surprised to see the town of San Quirico d'Orcia included in the list of "most beautiful villages". I happen to know San Quirico and because it is off the usual beaten tourist path, it retains an "Italianness" that has been lost by, for example, Greve in Chianti, where one would be hard-pressed to find an Italian in that town's lovely main square on a Saturday afternoon. But San Quirico could never be called "beautiful", by any stretch of the imagination.

Despite my reservations about this book, it would probably be a welcome present for a friend who has recently returned from the grand tour of Tuscany and it will, at least for a while, have a prominent place on this friend's coffee table.

  5. i orignially purchased this book as a resource for a paper i was doing on tuscany, but when i received it and began to browse through it, i sat down and read the entire thing from cover to cover. the photography was magnificent; the information was just the right amount without going on and on; the entire product was stunning. i wanted to run to the internet and book the next flight to tuscany!
