  1. You can feel the quality build of this lens when you hold it in your hands. Excellent sharpness with great contrast. Mild distortion and vignetting which are unavoidable in such a wide angle lens. See example photos.

  1. I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera. I was told at a camera shop that Pentax and Minolta take the best pictures for a point and shoot camera. I was going to buy a Nikon, but was told that Nikon doesn't even make their own point and shoot cameras. Another company makes them and they put the Nikon name on their point and shoot camera. This Pentax camera has a neat feature. As the camera zooms in and out, the flash adjusts so that if you're shooting a close-up, the camera won't put too much light on the subject. I took the camera to a Nascar race and used 200 speed film. The pictures came out great. The only problem I had with my order is that the product description indicates that this camera comes with a case and a battery, however, this camera did not.

  2. Why do they call this a ultra-compact camera? I was really disappointed when I open the box and found out how large the camera actually is! It's twice as big as my old one, which I'd wanted to replace, and while it's lightweight, it's awkward to hold, and the lens covar is difficult to slide. I don't know if it takes good pictures, but the size is terrible. These days people expect small. I'm returning it and buying one that I know is small, yet still has all the great features, the Fujifilm Zoomdate 1300.

  3. I have used a Minolta 35mm camera for many years and have been very happy with it. Lately there has been "bleed-in" on the pictures so it was time for a change. I did a lot of internet research into cameras which would be simple to use and give good pictures. I decided on the Pentax Espio 140 after reading many reviews and descriptions. After experimenting with a couple rolls of film, I am very happy with the camera. This is my first zoom 35mm and I am still learning the methods of using it. I am especially pleased with the outdoor shots. I learned that the flash has its' limitations when using the zoom in darker situations. Getting the camera loaded and operating is simple. The instructions are easy to read and understand. The film indicator is large enough to read in low light situations. I like the lens cover/slide and do not find it hard to operate. The date feature was something which I definitely wanted and it shows up well. I am also pleased with the close-up pictures which I have taken, however, I am less than totally pleased with the red-eye reduction. I have red eye in some of my pictures and will be experimenting with camera positioning to see if there is something on the user end which can be done about it. I am pleased with the camera and would recommend it to someone looking for a good easy to use camera.

  1. I have owned a pentax camera for 13 years and it has always taken FABULOUS pictures. I wanted to get a better camera to replace my older Pentax (even though it works great!) so I could get the SLR features my older one didn't have.

Overall I am extremely satisfied with this camera. The quality of the prints is outstanding. The camera itself is easy to use and the automatic settings allow even a novice (to the SLR world) like me to shoot professional-looking prints.

My only complaint would be that I noticed in low light (like on an overcast day, or in the shade) the automatic feature won't pop up the flash so the prints end up looking dark. One of my daughters has brown hair and in one picture I took on the porch her hair looked black. Also her face looked grainy and dark. My husband, who knows a lot more about SLR photography than I do, said he thought the camera was metering off the wrong source???? In any case, that is something that a more knowledgeable photographer can work around.

I shot some black and white pictures at the Biltmore House, and they look like the work of a professional.

This is a great little camera!!!! If not for the darkness issues I had, I would have rated it 5 stars. Pentax makes an excellent quality product and their cameras are built to last.

  2. I just purchased The Petax ZXL, I could not be more pleased, it workds just beautifully, in the process of using it you dont have to go back to the manual for more instructions, although the manual is pretty good, if you have some experience with these types of SLR AF cameras, this is a snap.
The camera works so well, the results are excellent, it is just a winner, I cannot understand why [Amazon.com] no longer carries this camera, thats a shame.
Besides working so well, this as some camera reviewers over the years have said, is typically Pentax, neat as a pin, works like a dream, when I saw it for the first time a few days ago, found it irresistable, I enjoy using a camera that does not look like a star wars weapon, has a very contemporary look, fits me perfectly, works beautifully and still has a tremendous battery of electronic enhancements very well hidden, I love the thing.
Also shot some slides, I eventually scan them in and they come out great, pentax slides with the ZXL are superb.
    Nuff said.

  3. I bought my ZX-L about 6 weeks ago, have always loved pentax equipment, saw it in a photo shop, fooled with it and bought it in a minute, not the best way to buy photo equipment.
Now, a while later, I could not be more pleased, this is a beautifully made camera that consistently turns out magnificent photos. The idea of using an SLR as a point and shoot camera seemed ridiculous, I refused to accept it, started using it in Aperture or Shutter speed mode. The I decided to go for Pentax,s full program mode, and this is the way I use it exclusively now, the thing shoots almost exactly the way I would shoots, pick shutter and aperture as well as I can, also sets off flash when required, in that it does a much better job than I could.
There is no way to beat this silver beauty, there really is nothing to criticize, a great great camera.
If you,re looking for a new slr, go for the ZX-L, I just dropped digital and when back to film,

  4. This is a excellent camera. Quick and easy to use. Lens works great and is a pleasure to use. Even in Manual mode with older K-mount lenses worked reall well...(had a few old Tamron zooms)...Well worth the money.

  5. I purchased this camera and lens kit for a birthday present to myself recently. I have not gone "digital" yet, as the price of the SLRs, printers, etc. are beyond my means at the moment, plus most of the SLRs within reach are only 6.1 megapixel. My experience with point and shoot type digicams is that they are fine for a couple of photos, then the game is over: the batteries have run down and unless you carry several spares or can wait until they recharge, you're out of luck. I live near Washington DC, and my photo jaunts involve museums, monuments, etc. with plenty of walking and the camera at the ready. Digitals just do not work for me. Previous to this purchase I had also purchased another autofocus/autoexposure camera this year of another make. I have owned and used manual focus/aperture or shutter priority cameras for over 20 years, all of them Yashica or Contax (unfortunately, Yashicas are no more...) until this year. I bought it and the Pentax to use, and plan to save the Contax and the best Yashicas for the sake of posterity and not risk breaking them.

I found the ZX-L easy to learn and use. The manual is more user friendly and informative than the other camera's. I do really like the other camera and it takes fine photos, but I prefer the Pentax. It just seems more solidly built, and is very comfortable in my hands, ergonomics are wonderful. I have also found that it is easier to use than the other autofocus/autoexposure camera in low-light/available light work. The multifunction dial is easier to read and understand, as are the other controls. When using the camera in manual focus/exposure modes, it is an easier movement than with the other recent camera. The 28-90 mm lens works well for me in about 90% of my photo taking needs. To save the batteries, I also purchased a Pentax AF220T flash.

I know eventually film will be replaced in total for general consumer markets. But until it is, I plan to use this Pentax for as long as I can. Thanks to it, I also will go to Pentax when I finally swallow hard and transition to digital SLRs.

  1. This camera has excellent ability to capture fine details. I was able
to stand at the base of a cathedral, aim the camera up, and take a
picture of the architectural details at the very top of the cathedral
    - that's probably some five stories up. .... The drawbacks were that this camera was quite heavy, and
the image from the eyepiece was always blurry for some odd reason.

  2. Got this 105G with QD back in Nov.2000. Pictures taken have been sharp and clear. In sunny conditions taking still pictures with Fuji 100 film provided brilliant, vivid colors. Just hope this one will be as reliable as my last IQ ZOOM100 which lasted 6 years and traveled all over the globe before it was stolen. To a previous reviewer: The viewfinder focus can be adjusted using the diopter adjustment dial. At about 10oz. with battery, this camera is NOT heavy at all.

Likes: Good, solid construction. The zoom movement, shutter action, and auto lens cover closure all convey a sense of quality materials and good mechanical design, unlike some minoltas and olympus cameras I've compared with.

Minor dislikes: on/off button right next to shutter release button. Zoom lever at an awkward position not like the old models where the zoom is integrated with the shutter release button, i.e., one finger to zoom AND snap picture. The accompanying case is TOO SMALL...can barely fit one extra roll of film in there...I suggest get a leather case. I got this camera at a really good deal so I shouldn't complain!

Overall, a good value in an "aim and shoot" camera.

  1. I saw this camera with my friend. Not only it looks good, the pictures you take will also come out equally good!. Particularly I liked its energy consumption part. Same battery will come for more no. of rolls than any other similar camera.

  2. I had purchased this camera about 6 months back and it has shaown me wonderful results....the pictures clicked by it are just amazing! The red eye reduction in it works just great.

  3. We bought this camera as a replacement for our dead Minolta Freedom 90. The Pentax is a nice camera, takes good pictures in most settings. You need to invest time with the instructions and some film to take any action shots, and to get your indoor flash pics the way you want them. Good camera to have handy, you may want to keep looking if you're more than particular about your point and shoot.

  4. I purchased this camara prior to our family trip to Disney World in place of our bulky Canon SLR. We had a point-and-shoot Pentax years ago that was a great camara.

What a disappointment. We basically ruined 4 rolls of film. Between the viewfinder being so far off the actual image as to make framing a shot next to impossible, the red-eye reduction that did not work and the auto-focus that wasn't, I would never purchase a Pentax again. My daughters' $30.00 point-and-shoot took better pictures.

  5. This is my 3rd pentax and first two I already given as gifts. Its a nice camera, Nice features like red eye reduction, Ok flash, do not expect Studio pictures from point and shoot.

  1. I got this camera for a 2nd autofocus camera. I like it better than my pz-70. By the way Pentax makes the best slrs. I also have 2 Pentax manuel cameras a mx and a mg. I love them too. Its light solid and small for a slr the zx-30 is great!

  2. I had decide that it was time in my life to buy a nicer camera than a point-and-shoot camera. I looked around on the internet and went to local stores that sold good quality cameras. I looked at cameras made by Nikon, Cannon, Minolta, Pentax, and Sigma, because i had heard that they were the top brands.

After several days of looking and comparing options and prices I settled on the pentax camera. I chose it because
    1. it was reasonably priced
    2. How user friendly it was and
    3. Because it had extensive options.
Basically everything I wanted out of a camera.

I suggest to you to do the same thing i did. Just look around everywhere and compare all of the options and special features of the cameras. I also recamend that if you do buy an slr camera you should get a polorizing lens cover or even just a plain lens cover, because it is exremely easy to scratch the lens.

  3. I am 14 years old and new to the photographic world. After doing months of research on what I wanted to be my first camera I decided on the Pentax ZX-30 Quartz Date. It was probably one of the best choices I have made. As a beginner I was looking for a camera that was simple to operate, but one that would give me quality pictures and versatility for me to be creative. This camera was my answer. My first roll of film was beautiful. My mother has a home daycare so I immediately started taking pictures of the kids. When I got my first roll of film back I was amazed at the quality of the pictures. They were wonderful. This camera gives you a variety of settings yet it is simple enough that you can have fun without having to deal with confusing dials and knobs. This is the choice for a beginner who wants to take photography seriously. Buy and enjoy!!

  4. This is a wonderful Camera that I have had for 4 years now. I have extremely enjoyed the quality pictures, and fun options that this camera has.

I took several photography courses and this camera was leaps and bounds above what I needed.

I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking into starting up or continuing photography as a hobby.

  5. I have owned this camera for the last 3 yrs. Not a single complaint so far. Most of the time I have used the auto settings even though it has a manual option. Excellent focus even in low light conditions and the focus lock is pretty fast. Yet to have a bad shot except for those occasional out of focus pictures which were mostly because of my fault.

Operation is pretty simple and does not have much frills to worry about. Excellent value for the price

  1. Using this lens with the K10D Pentax digital camera is a true pleasure. The sharpness of the images is outstanding!

  2. This is a great lens if you need a macro. On the Pentax *1st DS it gives images that are 1.5 times the actual size of the object. The first lens arrived damaged, but it was replaced by the vendor without any hassle.

4 comments about Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Ultra Compact Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras.
  1. The Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 Ultra Compact Lens for Pentax *ist Digital SLR Cameras is a great prime lens. Gave me nice clean, clear photos with excellent detail and color reproduction. Comes with a lens pouch and a lens cap that also doubles as a lens hood.

  2. After using the old Pentax-M 40mm pancake for a while, I decided to get this DA Limited version. 40mm on a Pentax dSLR is a great focal length for portraits and for regular walk-around use. The 1.5x multiplier of Pentax dSLRs makes the focal length work out to the equivalent of 60mm on a 35mm film camera.

The f/2.8 aperture is nice and fast, especially if you're coming from the kit lenses. It's fast enough to take pictures indoors (shake reduction doesn't hurt either) and creates a pretty narrow depth of field for portraits.

The super compact size makes my K100D feel very light and easy to carry around. It's perfect for outings where you'll end up taking pictures of people and close objects.

The autofocusing is super fast and I haven't seen it hunt around like my DA 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses.

    Pros:
    - Very fast autofocus. Doesn't seem to hunt around like the kit lenses.
    - f/2.8 makes it pretty fast and very usable, especially with shake reduction. The sharpness is decent at f/2.8.
    - Super compact and light. It makes my K100D a lot easier to carry around all day.
    - Great focal length for portraits.
    - "Limited" means that it's all metal in construction, which definitely helps this diminutive lens feel nice and solid.
    - Works great on some film bodies! See below.

    Cons:
    - The lens is so small that there's nothing to hold on to. I often find myself gripping the focus ring while the lens is trying to autofocus.
    - I've seen a good amount of purple fringing with this lens wide open. Stopping down a bit quickly clears it up though.

Overall, this is a great lens for traveling. The cons that I listed can easily be fixed with some practice and good technique.

Edit 11/27/07: One interesting thing to note is that this lens works on film bodies without vignetting. However, keep in mind that this is a DA lens so there is no aperture ring! Cameras like the ZX/MZ-5n, ZX-10, etc. don't have a dial to control the aperture so this lens is really only useful in full auto or Tv modes. This lens works perfectly on the *ist film, ZX-L/MZ-6, MZ/ZX-7, PZ-1(P) or any other Pentax film body that has a dial for aperture control.

  3. For pentax digital body users, for standard fixed focal length lens

    most popular choice would be a FA35mm f2.0 and this DA40(for this price-under $300! it's good!)

DA40 is surely better as it is small and light. The image quality was

satifactory. It is a bit dark(f2.8) but I had no problem to take picture

of my 2 year old baby in the room(night) without flash.

I trashed the carton box of the lens - After use, I realized that I have

no reason to sell this lens to someone else. Yes, I'll keep it until I have a pentax body.

  4. I bought this after getting the Pentax FA 50mm f/1.4. The Pentax FA was slow on autofocus, but the DA's (this lens and the kit lens) are much faster. It's a little bit wider but not by much. Most things you photograph are not 1.4 so 2.8 is still really good. The lens is rather flat with a small lens cap, which I'll probably lose at some point.

Pros: small, lightweight, fast autofocus, wide aperture, strong build

    Cons: none found yet.
