- I bought this Camera for my 13th Birthday and I was happy until i tried to put the video onto the computer. I you realy want to edit video on the computer then you NEED to get Firewire for your computer. After I got Firewire The video worked fine, but I suggest you get a good editing softwear like Adobe. windows is ok to start but has very low video capture. When you burn it on to a DVD using windows is is all blury but can still make out picture. So a Great Camera but you have to get firewire to make it better. Firewire is only like 25$.I love this camera and I hope you will to.
- This camcorder is absolutely wonderful. Though I don't think I'd pay top dollar for it. While it works great recording and playing back, there is minimum software availible ( Id didnt recieve any) and figuring out how to download it to the computer to burn to a DVD took a while. Though I only paid $195 for this camera that also came with a brand new camcorder bag and additional battery. I kinda wish I would have spent the extra money to invest in a DVD camcorder. But, if you are willing to take the time to learn how to burn to DVD, then this is a great camera!
- This camcorder is good but not great. Sure its not expensive but with this amount of money you can get a much better one on ebay. 1/6 in ccd is average for this price range. It has no mic input. But it does last a good amount with the battery, has acceptional quality under lighting when i use two or more lights...for my movie aspire which is a musical. During shots that have fast sequences, you can tell as it looks jagged and not smooth. This had to be fixed in post, which, if you're only paying 250 for this cam, you probably won't waste your time fixing this in post. The manual white balance is nice.
- I know the frustration of wanting some software with this product. Yes its a nice little camera and all but if you want to get some actual video out of it to be put on your computer you could use video capturing software like snag-it which has a free download and trial. Granted the video will not be the best of quality but if you absolutely have to have this on video on your computer snag-it will give it to you but at low quality. You can also snap still images from the videos using it too. Hope this helps
- After using the Palmcorder brand for 6 years, I just purchased a second one to use for a 2-camera setup (both running at different angles since I produce martial arts instructional videos). For those new to digital camcorders, my opinion is that this is a great camera. For those who are intermediate and advanced, naturally you already know that you will want to spend a bit more for a bigger, better camera to meet your needs.
The Palmcorder takes good video but you should have additional lighting available. They say it's good in low-light conditions, but admittedly I've never found that to be true, even with a LOT of experimentation. Outdoors, though, or indoors with normal lighting? You will find a good video result.
The audio is passable but connecting an external mic, you will hear a slight "buzz" in the background (removable in post). A pain but still passable for the price.
Zooming in and out finds zero noise, but I rarely zoom much anyway. If I need a closer shot, I get the camera closer since the pixelation is always noticable to some degree when zooming. It's not "too" bad zooming in just a bit, but beyond 1/3 of the bar you see will find a lot of pixelation.
Tape change is great vs. Canon (Canon tape door is at the bottom and you have to remove it from the tripod, whereas Panasonic and most others are on the side). Battery life is 1 - 2 hours depending on the age of the battery. My first one is over 6 years old and I just had to change it last month. 5 years isn't bad.
Manual controls could be improved but passable. Automatic controls work well for new users and you will probably not even need the rest. If you want to learn it, though, it's a simple process.
For best shots, I recommend a good tripod to keep the camera steady (for all cameras, too), particularly if you zoom in. There are lots of techniques for holding the camera steady when zoomed in but the Palmcorder must lose it's mind after zoomed in too far. It comes out with a lot of pixelation. Read that as "don't zoom in unless you absolutely have to and you'll be fine."
I've used my Palmcorder in all sorts of weather and conditions, and it's worked like a dream. Good video, good audio, good battery life and easy controls. The only "bad" thing you might encounter is that in humid weather, you need to acclimate the camera for 15 - 30 minutes or so. But since you have to do that with every camera, anyway, it's not Panasonic's fault so no biggie there.
All in all? This is a great camera for the price, as well as being a solid piece of equipment that you will enjoy. It's good to learn with as well as being a good backup camera or using as a 2-camera system.

5 comments about Panasonic VDRM70 DVD Camcorder with 2.5-inch LCD w/10x Optical Zoom.
- These instructions suck! They leave out vital information on procedures (like the exporting and burning onto disks) and then stick it somewhere else in the book. It does not give the "how to" in step by step format. I have had this complicated mess for a year and still don't have it figured out. Recording is a breeze but getting it off your dvd-ram onto your computer is a load of crap and best of all I have yet to find a place that sells the magical dvd-r's that are compatible to this thing. I finally exported my recording from the dvd-ram into the software and now I will have to thumb through these instructions for days to find out the small paragraphs just thrown about in bits and pieces throughout this manual to figure out how to save it to a dvd-r (wherever you find the ones that go with this fickle panasonic camcorder)
- I have had this camera for about a year. I have used to record sports events, home events, etc. I have been satisfied with the recording capability. I did have to upgrade my home dvd player so that I can use the DVD format. I have been able to transfer movies to my PC for professional editing using third party software from Pinnacle and Dazzle. The software supplied by Panasonic for PC operations does not work, period. I have tried to contact Panasonic for support, and have received absolutely no response, not even an acknowledgement. There is no way I can find to replace or upgrade the software, or to get a human to answer questions. Customer support is crucial to me, I will not buy another Panasonic product given my experience to date.
- One star is one too many for this camera. It will only work with RAM discs with frequent errors. Found many errors in owners manual. The drive motor has gone bad and now I have nothing. Panasonic wants $500 to fix it! I don't see myself EVER buying another Panasonic ANYTHING !
- I've had this camera for a couple of years and think it is great. In response to a couple of the negative comments posted here: 1) Using DVD-RAM discs is a huge advantage over other cameras like the Sony. It is great to be able to re-use the discs. 2) Yes, it's true that the software that comes with the camera isn't very good. I don't use it. I use Ulead Video Studio, which works great with this camera. It is even easier to use if you get a DVD-RAM drive for your PC (which will cost less than $20). I shoot a disc's worth of video, import it into Video Studio, then erase the disc and shoot some more. It is good to format the discs now and then - that should prevent disc errors. The picture quality is quite good. It is only lacking in low light, which is true of nearly all video cameras.
- I got this camera as a Christmas present and loved it for awhile until my Dell broke and I finally got a new Mac!! I was surprised to find out that that this camera does NOT work with Mac's unfortunately. Now I can't even use it because burning to a DVD and then bringing it into iMovie reduces the quality so much, it's not even worth the hassle. When I used this camera on my dell, it worked perfectly though so no worries there!
Despite it not working on Mac's, I have to say I was NOT impressed with the image quality. The auto focus is constantly searching and the manual focus doesn't work too well. I've used Sony MiniDV cameras and they are SOO much better for image quality. It's a good camera for anyone taking simple video and not taking too much action shots. Okay Camera, but there's better ones for your money out there.

1 comments about Panasonic Lithium Ion 5 Hr Battery for PV-DV53, DV73 Camcorders.
- This battery may be a case of too much of a good thing. Unless you are a very heavy user of your camcorder, 4.5 hours (which is what you will get if you use your LCD screen) is probably more than you will need.
For half the price, I would recommend the CGRD16A/1B, which has three hours of rated usage, or 1.5 with the LCD screen. If you need this much battery life, be aware that this is a big battery that will stick out of the back of your camcorder quite a bit. That said, this is a very good battery that retains a charge quite well.

5 comments about Panasonic SDR-S100 3.1MP 3CCD MPEG-2 SD Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom (Includes 2GB Memory Card).
- I've owned the camera for 3 months now, and am very happy with it. I needed a camera tiny enough to carry in a purse, yet capable of high quality video, and this is it.
Tape-based camcorders make DV video on tape - those DV cameras make video which cannot be converted to DVD unless you go through a cumbersome operation of playing the video in the camera while at the same time "capturing" the video on a computer over a firewire cable - a process which is error-prone to say nothing of being a time hog. If you shoot 5 hours of video, getting it onto computer takes 5 more hours. On the other hand, a mpeg-based SD-card camera like this transfers its video to computer simply by inserting its SD card into your computer's card reader slot. If you use an aftermarket DVD author program like TmpgDVDauthor, you don't even have to transfer the files off the SD card - you can "drag and drop" the filenames and create a TV-viewable DVD without any hassles, directly from your card reader.
This camera is the replacement for Panasonic's still-amazing "worlds smallest true camcorder" SV-AV100. It has greatly improved low light capability, and incredible richness of color. To say nothing of its still picture capability, with pop-up flash, even.
Though the camera advertises itself as having "3.1" megapixel stills, they are actually closer in quality to a typical 2 megapixel camera. This is because the camera uses its video CCD's to make the still, with Panasonic's "pixel shift" method. You cannot compare this camera to digital still cameras which have a gigantic CCD to make their stills with - being a video camera, one should be thankful for these stills in such a small package. With care, the stills can be enlarged to 4x5 inches on quality photo paper and look very good, but 8x10 inch enlarging is overdoing it. If you want digital still camera type stills for portrait enlargements and critical still photos, get a digital still camera in addition to this camera.
The camera's 10x zoom is useable because of its excellent image stabilization. The lens mechanism adjusts itself at high speed to counteract jerky hand movements, keeping your picture sharp. This does not mean that holding the camera in shaky hands will not produce a moving picture, but the fast "quiver" that ruins videos will be gone, and the individual frames are amazingly sharp. A tripod or monopod for extreme zoom shots is still best, but the image stabilization is a marvel, even better than in the earlier camera.
There are some good still cameras which have a "video mode" which can be used to make DVD's, but none of them have all of these features: (1) 48kbps stereo sound, (2) 60-fields per second interlaced video, (3) 640x480 or larger video resolution. Most, like the often praised Casio EXP-505, have only 30fps video, which will cause a "flicker" when converted to DVD video. The interlacing, which updates at 60fps, is necessary for making fast action look smooth on your TV. Don't make the mistake of trying to use a digital still camera's "video mode" in place of a true camcorder with fully-interlaced video like this one.
Sample video and user comments are on the ad-free nonprofit site www.zyvid.com, which has the largest forum for the camera and the SV-AV100, replacing the old JackBrown forum.
Critics of the camera forget how tiny the camera is. When a camera is the smallest of its type, minor compromises are to be expected. But the excellent quality and color in its video are comparable to any consumer camcorder, even the much larger ones. It's a real marvel.
- This is the best camcorder for it's size and price. Also no tapes makes this camcorder really great. Good still pictures as well.
- Great camera - Well thought out, good quality pictures and movies.
Everything goes on the memory stick - No moving tapes or motors to malfunction.
The only feature absent is an optical viewer (it only has the LCD screen to see what you will be filming). It's tough to frame your shot in dark, as the screen will not have the illumination until the flash lights - and then it's to late to frame your shot! Same problem for outdoor shots on bright days where the image is hard to see on screen.
- I purchased this camcorder because I love the fact about how you can use this with just a memory card like with your digital camera. It so small and compact and easy to use. I am happy to take it with me to record my 4 children with all their sports they do. Then I come home and upload it my computer, very simple. I'm glad I purchased this one.
- I purchased this camera in Feb 2006 and it has been great!! Untill I got a new computer with Windows vista. The software that comes with it will not load on windows vista so I have not been able to tranfer videos and keep them organized as I did. As a result I have lost most all video clips that have not been edited to DVD formatt. I also cannot load new video clips to my computer. I attemped to reach Panasonic as I could find no downloads to fix this problem. They have never gotten back with me.
