- I have been using this model for over 16 months now, and I find it to be extremely well-made and it takes fantastic photos that print well at 8"x10".
I HAVE RECOMMENDED THIS MODEL TO A NUMBER OF FRIENDS, AND THOSE WHO OPTED FOR IT HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFIED.
SOLUTION TO SHORT BATTERY LIFE
------------------------------
A number of other reviews reference short battery life. I found a rechargeable solution that fits hand-in-glove with this camera. Rayovac markets a 15-minute rechargeable system (the Rayovac I-C3 system) that charges the batteries in 15 minutes (really!) and I have used them with this camera exclusively since the first few sets of typical batteries drained after a few photos. Depending on the flash settings, I can get anywhere from a few hours to a full day of use. The most photos I took on a single charge (without the flash) was 279 (using an SD card for storage)! I keep two sets, but because they charge so fast, I can throw them in the charger before a party and need not worry about missing those picture-perfect moments!
THIS CAMERA'S MAJOR FLAW
------------------------
The one real pain in the butt with this camera is how it loses its date and time information every time you open the battery cover (to change batteries or insert/remove SD cards). After a few dozen times, setting the date becomes almost automatic, but it simply is a nuissance. It would have been relatively simple and inexpensive to add an internal battery and chip to maintain the time settings while the battery cover is open, and I would have paid a $10-$15 premium for that feature. DON'T LET THIS KEEP YOU FROM BUYING THIS CAMERA--I WOULD HAVE WANTED TO KNOW THIS BEFORE I MADE THE DECISION TO BUY, BUT I AM EXTREMELY SATISFIED WITH THE CAMERA OVERALL.
- This thing eats batteries, it can literally go through a set of 2AA batteries in 15 pictures or less. I have had it over a year now and I rarely use it because it is such a pain to put in new batteries every time you want to snap some pictures. I just use my camera phone now to take pictures.
- I've had this camera for 2 years now and I love it. Unfortunately, I loaned it to someone who dropped it. It still works but now it won't hold the SD card. I use this camera for business and I have to be able to take a lot of pictures at once, so I'm looking to buy another just like it.
The pictures turn out great. I have a photo printer and I have used it to print photos taken with this camera that range in size from wallets to 8 x 10's. Everyone who sees the work is extremely pleased. You do have to reset the date and time every time you open the battery compartment, but I don't care to have this information printed on my pictures, so I just skip it. The only problem that I've had with it is battery life. I had used rechargeable batteries for a while, but they have to be recharged too soon. I recently started using a camera battery, CRV3. I purchase them at a drug store for about $8, but the battery lasts so much longer than regular AA or rechargeables. I highly recommend this camera!
- Yes, this camera eats batteries quickly. However, rechargables help remedy this issue dramatically. The best feature of this camera is the price; you def get a lot for what you pay for. The worst feature of this camera is either the flash taking 15 - 45 seconds to recharge (due to batteries and poor design) or having to reset the time/date AND personal camera settings every time you open the battery compartment (including to swap SD cards).
The video function is far better than other point & shoot cameras in that it does not have a time limit on the recording length. However, the film is email-quality at best and there is no recorded audio, which you will find in some cases is annoying. I have never been able to use this camera as a webcam as stated by Amazon.com. Also, the camera only has a digital zoom, which is completely worthless in my opinion. Optical zoom is the way to go. Digital zooming can be done with ANY photo editing software later at home. Yes, optical zoom lenses protrude from the camera as stated in earlier reviews, however, in most cameras the lens retracts once the camera is shut down.
Lastly, there are two versions of this camera, A & B (Check Vivitar website for more info). From my experience, the A version does not offer the digital zoom feature. There may be other limitations as well. The only way to tell which version you have is to check the serial number on the bottom of the camera. If it begins with A than it's an A-version, with B, it's a B-version.
Overall, I highly recommend this camera to anyone on a budget and those only interested in a simple point & shoot. Serious photographers should invest in a better-designed camera with optical zoom and an internal battery that saves the camera's settings.
- hmm...where should i start....
the adjustment for macro/portrait/landscape is on the front of the camera and easy to forget about. the shutter isen't to fast, if your moving even the slightist amount the picture will come out blurry, so its not good for people without a very steady hand.
as others have said, anytime you open the battery cover to change the batteries (it does go threw em like crazy) or the SD card, you have to reset the tiem and date. this isen't to big a deal since unless you really want to use them you can leave them with there default incorrect times. however, something that truely IS a pain, and very obnoxious, is that the picture settings revert to default EVERY time you turn the camera off. the default being medium quality and large size. which really sucks if your trying to max out the number of pics you can take.
overall, its a horrible camera.
the old bulky digital camera i had before getting this one was even better at taking pics.

- Boy what a turnaround from my prev posting...The camera stopped working intermittantly...will not focus no how and take a picture...flash goes off..but nothing in the LCD or memory as a picture being taken. Turn it on and off a bunch of times and it will work....then next time you use the camera..it may or may not work until you turn it on and off again a bunch of times..and the battery signal meter is useless..it will show full strength and all of a sudden camera goes dead...needs more batteries. and the worst part of all is Vivitars customer service..or lack of..I called them 4 times...and its not a toll free #..and after 4 weeks..still no response..and I challenge anyone to find a way to email that co from their website..try it. after wasting an hour on it it tells you to sign up for this cumbersome EBOX system where someone will get back to you...same thing..after 4 weeks..no message from anyone..and they had the nerve to send me an automated email today saying my request was closed... CLOSED?? I never even got a response...trust me..stay away from this company..if you get lucky and get an ok camera..good for you..but pray you have no problems wiht it or you will experience their lack of customer service.
- My father bought 3 of these cameras in April 2004 and only one works periodically. They eat batteries as do all digital cameras so make sure you have plenty on hand if you don't buy rechargable batteries. The cameras all worked so awesome for the first few months. I used mine the most and it was the first to die. The pictures start coming out blurry and then sometimes the camera would turn on and then shut off or would not come on at all. I lost the screen on the top first and then the lcd screen went wacky. I have pictures of my newborn stuck in the camera and am unable to retrieve them. If you want to spend $100.00-$189.00 on a throw away digital camera then this one is for you!!!
- If you're looking to print upto 5"x7" pictures, this is a great camera. Takes very good pictures. I have mine for a year now. Always reliable. Just get a photo editing and organizing software, and rechargable batteries, and you're good to go.
- I purchased the camera from HSN.com after watching the impressive demonstration. I it worked well at first. I added 256 MB flashcard and it got very quirkey. I sent it back and they replaced it with the same result. I used a different smaller flashcard and it worked OK for a short while. Then it started having problems capturing the shot. The shots would be fuzzy or completely black if they did register having taken. This is a camera I would advise everyone to keep away from based on my experience.
- This was my second digital camera, and overall I have been happy with it. I did have one problem with it -- not quite three months after I bought it, it suddenly stopped working. Since it was still under warranty, I contacted the company. They exchanged it promptly for a new camera, which has worked fine ever since. That was about three years ago.
The picture quality is very good; I've had a number of photos printed at up to 8" x 10", and people who have seen them are amazed that they came from a digital rather than a film camera (and a 3 megapixel one, at that).
My biggest complaint about the camera is its speed. The shutter lag (the time between the time you press the button and the time the picture is recorded) is significant, as is the processing time between shots. Also, because the lens has to extend every time the camera is turned on, it takes a long time before it's ready for the first shot. The motor that extends the lens is also noisy.
It's also a bit of a battery hog. I had four sets of rechargables that I used to carry along, just to make sure I wouldn't run short of power at a critical moment.
Overall, though, I was very satisfied with this camera, and still use it on occasion.

- What a great new toy for my electronics collection. The Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP is by no means a toy by nature. From the moment you remove it from the box, this marvel of the modern age will never cease to amaze you. It comes standard with features that cameras twice the cost fumble to compare with. The Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP is not a camera for the faint hearted but more so for those who live life on the edge. So dont waste anymore of your precious time on the other brand digital cameras but bring the digital world to life with your Vivitar Vivicam 2.1MP digital camera. Cheers.
- I JUST BOUGHT THIS CAMERA ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO. I AM VERY
IMPRESSED AT THE IMAGE QUALITY AND THE CAMERA ITSELF. YOU JUST DON'T FIND THE FEATURES AND THE IMPRESSIVE QUALITY IN SUCH AN INEXPENSIVE DIGITAL CAMERA. 3X OPTICAL ZOOM WORKS GREAT. TAKES SUPERB PICTURES INSIDE OR OUT. PLAN TO TAKE IT ON VACATION. HAS TV OUT AND TAKES SHORT VIDEO CLIPS. GREAT BONUS. DO NOT HESITATE TO BUY THIS CAMERA, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED.
- I bought this camera back in July. I liked it, it took pictures just fine, was a good deal for $140.
But it let me down. In Feb. the zoom lens jammed. The first thing this camera does when you turn it on is pop out the zoom, so this turned it into a brick. It is very difficult to get a person on the phone and not voicemail. I sent the camera to Vivitar. They also make you send a check for $5 for return shipping! A month later, I received a replacement. With a bad flash, although I can see how whoever inspecting missed it, because the flash does a weak blink. Now in late April, I'm still waiting for them to send me a mailing label to return the bad replacement, because I've already paid shipping twice and should not have to pay again. I've given up on Vivitar and bought a Nikon Coolpix 2100.
- I paid $59 for this camera, and I found that it was worth every cent!
The photos it takes are very clear, and I've had no problem figuring everything out on the camera. At first the instruction booklet looks a bit daunting, but it is split up in sections for different languages. Their really isn't that much at all to read, and it's even easier to figure out.
One thing I noticed on this page is that it takes a CR123A battery, and it actually takes 4 AA batteries.
If you have a tight budget, then don't hesitate on this camera. It's definitely worth the cost! It's also a nice beginner camera for someone who's never owned a digital camera before.

- Disappointment, even at the $90 + shipping I paid for it. Good focus and clarity at 20x, but only with very high contrast (white on black) is the resolution any better--and then only very slightly better--at higher power, because the clarity/attainable focus drops as much as the magnification goes up. With lower contrast subjects one gets much better resolution at 20x than 60x! And what the Vivitar web site won't tell is that despite the fact that they're based in California, the unit is made in China.

- I was excited to get this lens and have the capability of zooming in close without having to switch lenses for wide angle shots. It does a good job, is very easy to operate, but I am a bit dissappointed with its ability to focus up close. It can not take pictures of objects closer than 6-8 feet. So I will still keep my 35-80 lens in my camera bag for those shots that I just can't back away from.
- Have recently purchased this lens for my Maxxum St si. The lens weighs much heavier than the Minolta 35-80mm lens which came with my camera but covers a much extended focal length range, possibly all that I would ever want to shoot within. The focusing rings turns as faster as the oneon the smaller lens did.
Though the lens dwarfs the relatively smaller ST si camera body but the overall look of my camera is impressive. Hope the wide focal lenght coverage will equally have a premium optical quality.

- It's all you need, great as a secound lens. Excelent for PRO and Amateur. Great value.
- We own this lens for several years using it on Nikon F70. I was very disappointed with the over-all quality (esp. sharpness) of the lens. Tamron 28-200 lens is supposed to be also on the "lower" end of the quality scale - I tried it once and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE compared to the 28-300. In other word: even the much critized Tamron 28-200 is better. Very likely a 28-300 even with reasonable compromise would unreasonably stretch the budget and perhaps the OEM of Vivitar (Vivitar does not have his lens factory) did the best they could for that money. I am curious, how good or bad is the 28-300 offering from Tamron. The Vivitar Series 1 IMHO does not deserve the "Series 1" name. I am affraid, in order to cover a long range with better quality one would still need 2 or even 3 lens.
- I have a Nikon camera F-60 with Vivitar 28-300 Series one zoom lens and BOWER UV coated filter since 12/1999. " They" always give the SHARP pictures for us ( myself and my community ). I'm the main photographer for my Vietnamese community. And my people has been satisfied with the photographs from my Nikon F-60 + Vivitar lense 28-300 and BOWER UV COATED FILTER.
About two months ago. My camera fell down from the chair on to the floor and the lens broken. I had to order the second one from Amazon.com . And I also bought another BOWER UV coated filter for my second Vivitar 28-300 lens. And " they " still provide us a lot of SHARP Photographs.
Try it : Nikon F-60 + Vivitar 28-300 Series One Zoom lens + BOWER UV Coated Filter.

- This is an excellent piece of accessories for SLR cameras. I am certainly very pleased its performance.
- If you are tired of the Minolta pop-up dinky flash, this is the add=on to get. It's excellent and always timely.
- Flash went crazy, tried to fast recycle for no reason and fried itself on fifth picture of first use. Probably a fluke. Amazon is the fastest thing going for a refund. I don't have those first few pictures back to evaluate how good it was as a fill flash that I was using it for outside.
- This flash is not a bad buy. It doesn't have a lot of features but it does the job. The only real problems I have with is that the head doesn't swivel and there are no markings to indicate the angle of tilt (for bounce flash). If you're just looking a separate flash to keep from using your camera flash and running down your batteries than this flash will do.
- Had the same problem as second reviewer...it POPPED,FRIED, then smelt of burnt plastic/wires after less than 10 flashes. Sadly it was a gift, too. I'll be testing amazons RETURNS performance soon.
