  1. Because of the lens, pictures come out sharp and beautiful. I've even took slides.

It's small and, so, it fits in your pocket. I take it kayakking.

But I find it unreliable. I've owned three and each time around the 1 year mark, the camera would inadvertently rewind the film as I was opening the shell.

I wish that there was a competitor. But there's really no other point and shoot with anything close to the sharpness that comes with an f2.8 lens.

  2. I am absolutely NOT a photographer. The pix I took with this camera all came out excellent.

  3. Small, light, and strong.

The best for a tough traveling abroad.

It has no Panorama Mode, no Wireless Remote Control, no Pouch, and no CR123A Battery.

Then, it is simpler than Olympus ยต[mju:]-II.

  4. I stand by MOST of my old review, BUT after using the Epic a bit more, I've found that the Spot Metering is a good workaround for some of the camera's shutter-priority programming. Put that Spot meter to careful use, and you can get more depth-of-field and less flash use. Also, after days of heavy rain recently here in California, the Weather Resistant features are nice, too. This camera really IS a great value!

    OLD REVIEW:
I'd suggest finding an old Olympus XA in good condition instead of this mostly pre-programmed techno-cam, although it does have a sharp lens..and it's very small and light too. But the autofocus is a little touchy, and it wants to shoot at f2.8 in any kind of even slightly low light. With the XA, you can choose any aperture(or ISO!)you want, and the lens is even sharper..of course, you might have to use a tripod too, but the Stylus Epic won't really acknowledge that choice!
However, within its' parameters, it's a slick little camera, and you really shouldn't have to pay too much for it; refurbished ones go for under $50.

  5. i don't remember a lot about this camera - but when i look at the pictures in the album i see good quality, very clear images even of the fast (show jumping) movements. I remember that it "died" when switch on-off by opening-clothing the lid stopped working and lens didn't "hide inside". but may be real reason was some dirt in it, it was with me everywhere. later remembering this camera dad bought newer version (same mechanism of switch on-off and still works)

  1. This is a good camera: takes good pictures and has huge 'viewing lenses' (or whatever those are called) that worked great for my grandmother's bad eyesight. The film is not automatically rolled neither in - when you insert the film you have to take a few pictures and make sure that the small numbers are changing, which can be pretty hard without eye glasses - nor out when there are no pictures left. At least the rolling forward between pictures is automatic.

  2. Lousy autofocus - I replaced the camera once and the new one is no better. I am sick of fuzzy, hazy pictures!

I consistently get MUCH better sharpness and quality with the Fuji SnapShot disposable cameras, as well as the Vivitar focus-free cheapie. Same shot, same time, same place they both put this camera to shame!

Even with ASA400 or ASA800 film, the pictures typically turn out too dark and with poor contrast as well. If pictures are worth taking, they really should turn out better than this!

  3. I got this camera last year for camp. It worked fine. The pictures were good but not the best. The pictures i took with it; didn't look like what it looked like when i took the shot. The pictures also had red eye. I continued to use it until recently when i brought it to camp again. This time the camera skipped pictures on the roll of film, and sometimes didn't work at all even with new batteries in it. Now my camera doesn't work, and i only had it for a year. But what can you ask for when you buy a ... camera.

  4. Well I actually won a camera exactly similar to the XB40... this one was the AF4000. I have just begun to use it and I really like it. Getting adjusted to a 35mm from a 110 was a little rocky, but all is well and atleast I dont have to worry about advancing the film. Overall this camera is nice, handy, small (but affective), and actually looks expensive, but isnt. I hope all enjoy the camera because I sure do.

  1. Very nice camera, good quality and a good price. Pick up a cheap APS book for some pointers and don't forget the batteries -- not included :-(

  2. This is a great camera for beginners and shutterbugs who don't have the patience to deal with professional photographic equipment. The APS features are fantastic giving you the ability to capture the entire Harbor Bridge on panoramic, and change film instantly while hanging from a ski lift without concern for film exposure or proper placement inside the camera casing. Its zoom lens is quite long compared to other cameras of the same type and price range. My pictures have always come out clear and crisp. Its also very durable and the rubber grip on the side makes it easy to hold unlike other all metal casing cameras. I have even dropped it in a waterfall, and although it is not waterproof and I wouldn't suggest doing it, the camera still worked after the water drained out of it. If you can still get your hands on one of these cameras, go for it!

  1. Let me say I'm a bit of a camera freak so I have had many different cameras and have researched them. This is a great camera! I wouldn't consider it "ultra-compact" given what's on the market these days (I would consider it fairly average), but I have not been disappointed with the outcome of my pictures taken with this camera. Just make sure the camera is able to focus. I took it to Hawaii and it took great pictures with or without flash! I took pictures in the evening, from inside a submarine, at night, inside, outside,... just about everywhere in every type of situation! I hardly made any adjustments and it took beautiful pictures! The shake sensor.. you have to set the camera to that mode in order to use it and i believe it doesn't stay activated after you've taken a picture. I find myself having to reactivate that feature every time I want to take a picture using it. However, I rarely use it. As far as I can tell, the sensor only really works if the camera is shaking pretty hard, but maybe the camera is just that good and will only really take a bad shot if you're in a really shaky situation. For being an all-weather designed camera, I think it would've been better if it were made of metal like the all-weather Stylus Select 105.

  2. I bought two of these cameras as gifts. Picture quality was ok...not great clarity but good color. Good for birthday party snapshots. After a few months, the sliding door stopped working on one of them. And shortly after the warranty expired (1 year) the other camera stopped working. Olympus phone service and Web site offered no help except to suggest that the only way to get it repaired was to mail it to them. For the price of $75.00 they would fix it. As the camera cost me $92.00, I'll just toss it in the trash. And NEVER buy an Olympus camera again!! That's my product review.

  3. Great camera if your still into film cameras. The pictures are crisp, and the colors are outstanding.

  4. I still like using film in my camera so I bought this one. It has several flaws. To hold the camera steady without a tripod, I like to hold on to the top. Unfortunately, the flash needs to pop up there; this is a bad design feature in my opinion. In addition, one turns the camera on by opening a door over the lens -- unfortunately, it sometimes takes several tries. That's bad when one is in a hurry to take a picture. Also, almost all of the zoom pictures have turned out fuzzy. In general, this camera has been a big disappointment. I bought it to replace a similar camera I've had for 7 years. I guess I need to continue looking for a replacement; this one is not going to work for me. I'm sorry I wasted money buying it.

  1. It took great pictures but needed to be returned....Both the original and the new replacement cameras were defective. (The button would "stick" and not let you take photos sometimes.)

  2. being i am new to this site, i find the product having the extraordinary.

  3. Even though digital cameras are all the rage these days -- and I myself have three of them! -- sometimes you do want to use a film camera, especially when you can't carry an AC adapter with you, or don't want to shell out lots of money for extra batteries, to power your digital camera. Also, ISO/ASA 100 film or slower still gives you the best clarity outside of the negative and professional realms.

This Olympus camera is a great basic film camera -- and it's a terrific value at less than sixty bux. It has the following features that I consider essential on every camera:

-- auto focus. Some very low-end cameras (but this is not a low-end camera!) only have "focus free", which means there's no focus in the lens. Olympus' auto-focus and auto-exposure systems work very well.

-- zoom. Of course, this being a film camera means the zoom is optical. It's only 2x, but if you want more zoom you'll have to pay for it. (The Pentax IQ 145M does provide 4x zoom for under 100 bux, but that camera is also bigger in size.)

-- date imprint. I'm one of those anal types who must document every picture I take. Being able to print the date, while irksome to some people, is a must for me. With a digital camera the photo file has a digital stamp which Windows XP can read (date, time, camera used, size, resolution, image quality, etc.). With a film camera, "quartz date" comes closest to having some extra info on the picture.

-- lens cover. Some cameras don't even come with this!

This camera is also pretty compact and feels right in my hands. The buttons are laid out just right. I find the lens a bit slow in moving in and out but not detrimental to picture-taking in most situations. (I don't shoot sports.) Red-eye reduction works ok but I rarely use it. Flash range is good, but you have to remember that a built-in flash can never do a good job at doing soft lighting.

Picture quality is good with this camera. Assuming you use brandname film like Kodak and Fuji, you'll get pleasing pictures. (If you use a generic brand you got for free at the street corner from a guy in a funny hat, you may be disappointed in the prints... with any camera.) This is really a basic consumer camera, so don't expect lots of fine controls as you can with SLR's.

Some reviewers complain about reliability problems, but from my experience Olympus cameras are some of the most reliable on the market. I haven't had mine long enough to know for sure, but the body seems sturdy and should last a long time.

  4. this is a fine camera, but i have to admit that when i finished taking my photos and got them developed, i was dissapointed to see that they all came back upside down! I am happy with this camera but would like to see a model in the future perhaps that takes photos right side up. It's annoying.

  5. I received this camera as a gift about 5 years ago and use it for just about everything: family pictures, vacations, etc. The pictures come out clear, the camera is very easy to use and has nice features, such as zoom and auto-focus that make it a great all-around camera. The camera survived a lot of abuse from travel, etc. but did not survive a fall on a hardwood floor. But after many years of use, I can't complain. I would definitely recommend this camera!

  1. I waited with much anticipation for this camera to be stocked after reading about it's new features in the press release in the fall. I purchased it as a gift for my wife for Christmas because our 6-year old Olympus Stylus Zoom 105 needed major repair. Our old camera took GREAT pictures - sharp, balanced exposures, great variable flash, etc. So, I had no problems buying another Olympus. I looked at the existing Olympus Zooms (115,140,170), but after comparing the pictures from my brother's Zoom 115 to our old Zoom 105, they still didn't seem as good. So I decided on the new Zoom 105.
    .
Overall, the new Zoom 105 camera is significantly (~15%) smaller than the old one. I like the cool metal shell better than the old plastic one. I was hoping that the AF system was as good as or better than the old one since it claims to be a 'new 11-point multi-wide advanced combination autofocus'.
    .
During an outdoor (daytime) event, we shot a whole roll of film using the new camera (fully-auto settings) in a variety of settings while my brother's wife used their Zoom 115. After comparing the pictures side by side (same processing), the shortcomings of our new camera are obvious. The pictures are VERY disappointing. The focus is not near as sharp as the old camera, or even the Zoom 115. The edges of the shots are much darker, also. We have taken several rolls in various environments all with roughly the same outcome. Perhaps we just got an early production-run lemon. For Olympus' sake, I hope so.

  2. This is such a good camera!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is so small, ALL-weather, metal body, a powerful zoom, a big LCD screen, and if that's not enough, it comes with a complete set that contains the camera(duuuh), a CR2 battery, a case, a strap, an extended warranty, and a remote control. What else can you ask for? Maybe you can say the zoom is actually not so good, but a lens of 38-105m, is actually a pretty nice zoom, because if you have a mega-zoom like 150 or something, you're never gonna use it!
If you are those who drop the camera very often, then this is your chance. A complete metal body so it won't be broken, and if you drop I mud it's all weather!
I extremely recommend this camera, besides, I don't know what happened to meubanks64 or something because it always takes sharp pictures with so nice colors.

  3. When buying this camera, I had huge expectations. I previously had a canon, however it was getting a bit old. When I purchase a camera I look for one that is stylish as well as good quality. Many of my friends recommended olympus' cameras to me and so after much research I finally bought the Stylus Select 105. When buying this camera, I expected a top of the line pocket-sized camera. I half-got what I was expecting. It takes wonderful outdoor pictures which are very vivid and clear. However, in dark rooms or at night the pictures can get a little grainy and not as bright as I would want them to be. In the beginning, I tried using the nighttime features as well as the red-eye, however, DO NOT use it unless you have a tripod with you. The manual recommends a tripod, but I decided not to listen and tried it anyway. My returned pictures were blurry and awful. I couldn't even put them in my photo album they were so bad. But I'm much more careful now and don't even bother using the nighttime or red eye features. They're not even worth using unless you carry a tripod with you everywhere you go. Maybe the stylus select 105 did not live up to my expectations, but I do have to admit that it is very sturdy. Also, the camera case givin in the kit is horrible. Don't expect it to provide any protection. The stylus select 105 probably wouldn't need the protection, but I prefer to have some kind of padding protecting my camera even if it has an all-metal body.

  1. Beware Amazon and Brennanelectronics product descriptions. I just bought and received an Olympus camera. The sellers descriptionOlympus Stylus 80 Quartz Date 35mm Camera Kit w/ 38-80mm Zoom stated that the camera was new and packaged in a sealed factory box and came with battery, remote and case. When the camera arrived in the mail it was repackaged in a Fry's.com box (the factory is Olympus), the battery was the wrong size and there was no case or remote. I have no way of telling if the camera is new or used. I have not tried the camera yet because I have to go out and buy the proper battery. But I suspect that anything is possible from this seller. Beware!
