  1. Love it.
Compact, great pictures, good for those that don't like to figure out settings, lighting, pixels, exposure, etc.
I especially like the "macro" setting that allows very close-up photography.
Software included lets you download to your computer so images can be saved, emailed, or kept on hosting sites.

  2. This is the first digital camera I have ever purchased, and I have learned a lot since then.

    1) Avoid cameras where the lens extends outward from the body! These are prone to many problems, ranging from impact to debris effecting its performance.

    2) Make sure the camera suits your purpose, test it in the store if you can. If you want a camera to capture action, this IS NOT the camera for you.

For simple snap shots, this is not a bad camera, for action it is virtually useless.

I now have a Nikon D50, which is infinitely superior, and worth the extra $$$.

  3. Just wanted to share that I've had this camera for 5 years now and it is still working great. It's got some scratches from being dropped a few times. We've used the camera for indoor and outdoors. Night use. Day use. Parties, schools, picnics, hikes, travelling abroad, halloween, christmas, family, business. This camera has been almost everywhere with us (except for underwater, ha!) Practical features too: Zoom in, sports shots, quick video clips, special effects shots, reduce back lighting and glare, timer, auto, manual, portrait, sunsets, and so many more.

Incidentally, over 20 years ago, I had my first Nikon camera, an FE. I didnt think that the lens of the simple coolpix could compare with the professional quality lenses I could place on my FE, but the ease of digital photography with the coolpix has more than compensated for its "amateur" level service. I have even been able to take some professional looking chiaroscuro images that hearkened back to my photography buff days. I was surprised and happy with the results.

We've even sent this camera in once for repair under warranty in its first year. It came back working better than ever(if not as it should have all along). Even my kids have gotten their turns with the coolpix. Yes, the battery has a short life, we have found that depending on use, we can get one day to 3 days of use on the battery life. We just charge it often and in between uses. So it still comes through for us despite the battery charging.

We have had an easy experience with the coolpix 4300. its filled up our photo albums and library both digital and printed. We have all enjoyed this camera for family and fun use.

We have just gotten a smaller, newer, more sophisticated and expensive Sony digital camera---I'm still on a wait and see mode on it. But, from durability alone, 5 years of use, I recommend the coolpix. And again, on ease of use and the immense and wide applications our whole family has and is still getting out of this camera, I highly recommend this and the coolpix family of nikon digital cameras.

  4. I've had this camera for almost six years now and I have to say it's pretty durable. BUT the image display screen is painfully small (especially compared to some of the newer cameras) and everything this camera does takes FOREVER! It takes about 10-20 seconds between each shot to "think" and don't even ATTEMPT to delete pictures because that will take you up to a full minute for each picture! Plus, the batteries die very easily and it's kind of a hassle to charge the camera because the batteries must be taken out of the camera and plugged into a specific charger. This is much more inconvenient than the newer cameras, which tend to simply take AA batteries or else plug straight into the computer or wall. Also...this thing is very clunky and awkward. Not sleek at all.

That being said, the quality of the images taken on this camera tend to be very good! The close-up function can produce some very nice, finely detailed photos, and the coloring and light always seems good. I enjoy the end product of using this camera, but it really is a hassle most of the time, so for the easily-frustrated...this is not for you!

Also, I found in the instruction manual, hidden deep somewhere there, that it says you should take the batteries out of the camera when it is not in use and that that will help them last longer between chargings (which I've never done so perhaps that would've helped them not die so quickly).

  5. This camera is designed for photographers of all levels, from a simple point and shoot to a complicated moving object and with just one button upload to the internet you will be on your way to greatness.

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix L5 7.2MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom.
  1. this is a great camera if you love to take pictures everywhere. the 5x optical zoom make's a big defference.

  2. I recently purchased a Nikon Coolpix L5 7.2MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom. What can I say? This camera is absolutely awesome! It is light on the batteries, and easy to operate. Do yourself a favor, and skim the owner's manual, in order to take advantage of all the features this camera has to offer. I especially like the broad range of aperture and the ability to rapidly shoot photos, in the sports mode. The Vibration Reduction Zoom does a superb job when engaged. Photos are always crisp, even when lighting conditions aren't well. I would recommend this camera to anyone, from the beginner to the novice professional. I love it!

  3. I bought this camera for my Mom when we went on the trip together. I'm glad I brought my own camera with me as otherwise we wouldn've have any good pictures. The picture quality was really bad, most of the pictures weren't clear. The outdoor pictures were ok, but indoor pictures were aweful in 80% of the cases. The camera is also quite slow to start and takes forever to charge the flash. We also could not set the flash to fire in the auto mode, it just would not fire. The instruction to the camera are very limited and unclear. I've used 6-7 different digital cameras before and this one is the worst I've ever used.

  4. After less than 500 frames, received "Lens Error," unable to correct without repair. Based on anticipated cost of repair versus current value, will likely throw camera away.

  5. it takes good pictures and much better video than you might expect. I have some YouTube concert footage that is surprisingly clear and the audio is very good.

The optical zoom is good and you can get good enlargements from that but once you get into the digital zoom things start looking bad.

My biggest complaint: The battery cover is as fragile as crystal -- Don't ever drop the camera -- the cover will inevitably crack or chip and that's it -- you'll be using tape to hold it together. I paid $50 to have it repaired once, but this time it's not worth the additional expense -- too bad.

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix 775 2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom.
  1. First digital. Good pictures - when you have the time to wait for the camera to power up and don't mind a considerable shutter lag time - no real problem with the pictures, BUT the start up time and shutter lag time were/are incredibly frustrating. I went back to a film camera because of those two problems - when taking "grab shots" - and for the complete control I get with a 35mm SLR when taking "serious photography" shots. For a point and shoot, quick "grab the shot" camera it just doesn't get it. On it's behalf, it is one of the earlier point and shoot digitals. They have come a long way since this one. Get a newer model and some of the problems have been cured. After about a three year lay off (of digital cameras), I just got back into the digital point and shoot cameras with a Canon A620. It is far superior to the 775. This camera just can't keep up with the grandkids - or any other "quick shoot" situation. I still have the 775, and will use it occassionally - within its limitations (again, the pictures are OK - not pro quality, but OK), but there are better cameras out there.

  2. I've had this camera for a while now, and the picture quality is quite good. My main frustration is how incredibly long it takes to power-up, the major shutter lag, and also the fact that it takes a long time to preview through pictures because it blurs and then refocuses, and forget even trying to delete pictures on the camera .. takes FOREVER. I don't bother, I just delete them when I load it to my computer. On the plus side, I like the colors this camera renders in comparison with others out there.. I think it's a good camera if you're into taking just like.. artsy pictures of still objects, but not action ones since it is soo slow. and for people.. well people are impatient, and by the time you get the camera on.. it's like nobody wants to stay still for the picture anymore.

Not a bad camera, if you're willing to wait for it.

  3. Cons: this camera is heavy and bulky. For the price, it is only around 2 mega pixels which isnt good. I had this camera for a while then the zoom wouldnt come all the way out and it says "system error" every time i turn it on so i cannot use it anymore.

Pros: the pictures turn out decent. It is a solid camera but do not drop it on the lens contraption because you will have the same problem of it not turning on and its garabe now.

  4. I got the dread system error message - the lens would not fully retract, neither would it extend. After googling this problem I tried the multiple smacks to the back ( front, sides and ends), with and w/o the battery in, without success. Then I accidently pulled off the small front piece of plastic containing the shutter itself (while trying to aid the motor by physically pulling out the lens, and simultaneously dropped the camera on the kitchen floor from a height of, oh, three feet, and voila! a working camera. I have taken pictures with it since. Turned it on and off. Still working. Of course, it's only been an hour...

  5. I own this camera and it does a real good job. I would recommend this camera to anyone. Takes really good pictures.

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix 880 3.2MP Digital Camera w/ 2.5x Optical Zoom.
  1. I am happy with the Nikon 880, however, I also purchased the battery charger, rechargeable batteries, 128 meg compact flash card, flash card reader, Adobe Photoshop Elements software, stepdown ring adapter for lens filters, slide copy adapter, photo glossy paper and textbook. I would also like to buy the Epson Stlus Photo 1280 printer, but that is for the future.

  2. I cannot say that this camera is bad but for the one year that I owned it, I keep wishing that I can attached a bigger and brighter flash for the indoor group shots. It does everything exceptionally well outdoor however, the indoor group shots is off the mark for insufficient flash... the pictures of group shot look dark and a bit out of focus on the outer edge. The lack of hot shoe and the lack of external flash terminal make indoor photographers, like myself, aching for more...

If you never have to do indoor photo of more than two or three persons in a groupd then it is a camera for you.

If you are serious, check out Canon G2 or Nikon 5000. Both has all you ever wanted in a digital camera.

  3. I have had this camera one year and am still impressed with the quality of it's pictures. It certainly has some flaws ( flash pictures, noisy auto focus) but anyone who claims that this camera doesn't take fantastic pictures doesn't know how to use it or has a broken camera.

  4. After 2 hears of removing the lens shade manually on my Nikon 880
I will never buy another Nikon product again. Up to now, I have not found any reference to this irritating procedure in the Nikon manuals, specifications, or camera sale's blurbs. The battery charger & rechargeable battery's extra cost & time to recharge the battery negates owning a digital camera that should provide fast & easy use. The ready light does not go off when the battery is charged. Time between captures is more like 3 seconds, not 1 second as stated

  5. Having used this CP880 for about 2+ yrs, I've still on the learning curve and have only scratched the surface . Although most shots are quite good with the Auto sequence, it's nice to have flexibility with manual settings. Be prepared to buy the extras to make your digicam experience practical: 2 re-chargeable Li-ion batteries and the charger; upgrade to a 64 or better yet a 128 MB CF card with card reader (supplied with my Lexar 64 MB CF card. USB connectivity reader greatly expedites transfer of files to PC); optional digital wallet (Minds@work 3 GB portable HD for travel and downloading on the road); belt case (to keep the CP close by for those "once in a lifetime shots"). I'm familiar with many controls but the manual is a bit cumbersome. I'm now reviewing "Nikon Coolpix 880 Photography by Dan Curtin...to pick up more nuances. The CP4300 may be a more current version and deserves consideration. All in all, a great camera. My 1200 shots taken in Oregon,Washington,Vancouver, and Victoria were burned to CD's with relative ease thanks to my CP880 and peripherals. Some of my Butchart Gardens shots were spectacularly polarized courtesy of a hand-held 52 mm polarizing lense from my old 35 mm Nikorrmat!!

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix 5700 5MP Digital Camera w/ 8x Optical Zoom.
  1. I bought this camera after many years of owning a Nikon FM-2.
This camera and those like it fill a gap for those who do not want to invest in a Digital SLR system. Yet have some control over the camera.

If you can get by with 5 Megapixles this is a good camera.

If you can, buy the filter set and the adapter because it not only protects the lens but also protects the zoom mechanism.

Buy or find the MB-E5700 battery pack which letts you use 6 AA Lithium batteries or rechargables. This gives you the best power option. (Turn off the continuous Autofocus and you will save power galore!)

No serious photographer uses on camera flash. You can turn off the flash on the camera and get a Speedlight.

The camera takes a while to master if you want to use all the features.
The metering for exposures is near perfect. The problems in low light can be overcome with some simple steps.

Set the focus on infinity for long distances shots.

Use the focus lock to lock onto something with contrast in low light situations. This is the camera's Achilles heel.

The Camera in not a pro camera and will take time to shoot download hi-res photos to memory.

I have been very pleased with camera and the results. I would like to have a Nikon D200 but do not want to spend that much.

  2. I've owned this camera since it first came out in 2003, and since I'm not a qualified camera "expert", I want to give you my thoughts on this camera. I'm giving this review as someone who is relatively new to digital "point-and-shoot" photography...

First and foremost, study the Nikon manual. Then study it some more. The controls are overwhelming at times, provided you are a neo-phyte like myself.

Second, for exterior photography on the normal setting, this camera cannot be beat! It is exceptional. The images are clear, clean, and colors are spectacular. I've photographed NASCAR at the California Speedway, and other events like the Coronado Speed Festival, etc., and the outdoor shots look great. Now for the indoor-shooting...

This is where the camera gets its two star rating from me. I do not know how to select the manual control on-the-fly. I've tried to set up controls to shoot indoor photography, but I don't have weeks and weeks to learn the settings. I've photographed people who are standing completely still, slightly moving (my kids), low lighting conditions, fair lighting conditions, and still cannot get proper images to come out.

The indoor photography is pitiful, as the colors are yellowish, muted, and nearly 90% of the time, the images are all blurred. The pop-up light is only good for 5-8 feet at best. I took some special shots of people who were stationary, and it appeared that the photo looked "good" when zooming in and out with the control. When I downloaded the CF card to my PC, the images were always blurred and the colors were way off.

Mind you, I'm not a camera professional like many of the reviewers here, but rather I'm just an average "Joe" who would like to have decent indoor pictures that looked natural and were not blurred.

I would sell this thing on Ebay if I could get more than a few hundred dollars for it, but I've already invested over $1,200 for the snap-on lens adaptors and protective lens cover which keeps the retractable lens from getting damaged. I bought this from a company in Canada back in 2003.

All in all I'm happy with the exterior photos, but am very, very, disappointed with indoor pictures. I guess this thing requires a lot of tweaking, and many, many hours of studying the little manual that Nikon has provided.

I would stay away from this and save your money for the newer Digital SLR's. I've had this for over four years now, and just wanted to write a review based on my experiences with this camera.

    Just a thought...

  3. I too fell into the "if it is Nikon" trap. Afer reading many reviews on the camera, I purchased two as my first step into digital photography. One for my wife and one for myself. We probalby have less than 1000 pictures on both combined. My wife's has been sent in for repairs twice for the zoom lens not working. I got mine out this morning to take a picture and the view finder and screen are both blank. I'm not even going to wast 10 bucks to ship it back again for repair. I still have several months left on the extended warrenty but it just not worth the effort.

And... everything about taking extremely long time to focus is true. This is the deciding reason for not having it fixed. Even when it is working, it is a very aggrevating camera. The number of good shots you miss while it tries to focus is unbelievable.

Both of my Coolpix 5700 were pieces of junk. It was a very expensive lesson about Nikon quality. With two cameras, additional lenses, battery packs, 1G memory disks, and extended warrenties, about 3K total.

Since I've only owned two Nikons, I can truthfully say when the topic comes up, "Every Nikon I owned was a piece of junk. I'll never buy another one.".

  4. The 5 Megapixel Nikon 5700 has been around a while, and people continue to love it and hate it. The optics are why you buy Nikon, and this is one sharp lens. It's complicated to operate if you want to do manual settings (M, A, S), but the Program mode will suffice for most people. It will shoot in RAW mode, unusual for a consumer camera. That gives you a lot of flexibility in adjusting the image. If you're not willing to read the manual though, this may not be the camera for you. Sort of like driving a manual transmission, it's so easy once you know how but you have to give it the effort to practice.

Nikon supports this camera with repair if you have problems, flat rate is reasonable (go to Nikon USA direct, dealers mark up). One common problem is the CCD failing, due to a Sony image sensor that a lot of camera makers used. Free repairs in about 2 weeks, but it's annoying. After that fix, this is a solid camera. I like mine, and shoot a lot of quick shots with it.

  5. I find the camera to be of excellent quality. It will serve my need for many years. The only problems: Installation disc is CDI...will not run on my computer. Had to select programs from Nikon to download and don't get all the functions I want. The memory card is old technology and the 10 megs they supply is a joke. I've ordered a 2 gig card so I can take more than 6 pictures at once.

  1. I'm very disappointed with all the features of this camera especially considering it's a Nikon. I wanted something simple, and small that i can carry everywhere with me. This cammera is that, no if only it took good pictures. My advice to you is to go with Canon...yes you won't find anything from them in this price range but it's about QUALITY. That is what you'll be paying for and you won't regret it. STAY AWAY FROM NIKON COOLPIX L14.

  2. I bought the camera for my daughter's birthday. She loved the brush pink color and the compact size. The camera takes excellent pictures and have not had a problem. She has taken about 300 pictures of the same set of batteries. I also bought a 2 GB card which gave her plenty of room to take pictures and videos. I recommend this camera for a nice point and shoot/ go anywhere camera. One negative aspect- it does take a few seconds between pictures.

  3. When my coolpix L3 died after a series of falls, the time came for a new camera. I ended up with the coolpix L14 which looked very nice in blue and took AA batteries so that was great! Then the problems began.......
The camera started taking the worst pictures I've ever seen in my life! And the shutter lag is unbearable on these cameras. It had more pixels then my previous one, and and sucked worse than the cheaper camera!Unacceptable! When I went on a trip to new york, i had to retake a picture three to four times to get one that might be somewhat clear. All the modes SUCK! No matter which one you use it either blurs, takes forever to reload flash, or comes out extremely dark! I've had it with this camera. Hopefully it will break so the warranty will exchange any camera up to its value. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA! YOU WILL BE SORRY! YOU'RE BETTER OFF WITH THE L3

  4. My mother bought this for my daughter as she thought it would be a good camera for her. She did do some research at that time and didn't find anything. I'm having trouble finding reviews anywhere but here but this camera should have been returned from the start! The flash did not work and fast forward in video mode also was not working. We sent it back and it was repaired after WE paid shipping and handling. My daughter took it on a trip, the lens got stuck and just like the other review, it was OUR fault it was damaged. This camera was junk to start with and we should have returned it or demanded a new one. Unable to get anywhere with Nikon as a "manager" looked at it and oh well, go buy another one. I will, another manufacturer. And I thought Nikons were good cameras? Maybe only on the high end. This one stinks.

  5. I bought this in Feb 2008 and next month it sarted giving me LENS ERROR, the camera switches off itself after few seconds when powered on(with the LENS ERROR message). I have given it for service. I missed to capture many important event after purchasing this product. Even though I found few review that tells it gives LENS ERROR I went for it thinking it will be very rare, look like is a common problem with this product.

  1. I loved this camera but I have had to send it back 3 times for the infamous "system error 2" design fault which plagues many of these. The repair service is slow - the camera has been in repair 50% of the year I have had it.

  2. I recently faced the "System 2 Error" many other users. Luckily, I have a three year warranty and it was fully covered and came back within 3wks of mailing (I sent it just before Christmas so it took longer).

    The Pros:
    Excellent features
Lightweight (I have small hands and cannot hold much weight)
    Came with a Remote control
    Large LCD
    etc...

    The Cons:
    Expensive (I paid $700 plus $135 3yr warrantly)
    Slow shutter speed
    Slow writing to flash
Has a tendency to over/undercompensate EV (so you need to play with the function quite a bit)
    Dreaded LENS ERROR!!!!

Overall, I am happy with my camera. I never owned and SLR and this camera is a great stepping stone for someone like me who wants something like an SLR but can't afford/doesn't know how to use one.
After owning the camera two years, I will definitely keep it as my, "throw in the handbag and go" camera but if you can afford an SLR, definitely buy one.

  3. My Coolpix 8800 lapsed into "system error 2" mode within weeks of getting it. After taking 3 or 4 shots the error message comes up and I have to shut it down and start it back up to take a few more shots before the error 2 message recurrs. Nikon says to try a fresh battery and different storage card...no help. Now Nikon says says send it in and we'll fix it- but don't say what it will cost... The shots I do get aren't as good as an HP camera we have that was half the price. The controls are ridiculously complex. The flash pops up and fires when shooting in bright light...the whole thing is a piece of junk. The only good shots I've gotten with it are inside shooting documents from 2 feet away...but for any outdoor complicated lighting it is unreliable... I wouldn't recommend this camera or any Nikon product to my worst enemy....Oh yeah, and they made the lens an oddball size so you have to buy overpriced Nikon filters for it.....

  4. My Nikon 8800 has traveled from the Amazon basin to the North Slope of Alaska and has taken over 100,000 photos. It has spent about a month in the hot, humid Amazon basin, a place which claimed the life of one of my past cameras. I've used it so much, I actually wore out one battery pack and had to replace it. Still, three years later the camera is functioning perfectly, just the way it did in the summer of 2004 when I bought it. This camera has been very reliable.
The image stabilization is extremely helpful in taking butterfly photos, the project I'm working on with this camera. I also use it to record interesting birds, so I can look them up in a field guide at home. With the image stabilization, I truely don't need to bring binoculars.
It is far lighter and easier to transport than SLR type cameras. I find this very helpful.
To improve this already excellent camera, I suppose that it would benefit from a bigger LCD monitor, stronger external battery pack, and screws for a cable release.
Also, in a perfect world, it would become a bit more light sensative and function better in darker conditions, or allow faster shutter speeds/greater depth of field. Maybe that science fiction type function will become possible some day, but whatever the case, I just love this camera as it is right now. It makes possible butterfly photography at resolutions and distances that were completely impossible just a few years ago.

  5. The purchase was easy. The product arrived as promised and in new condition. I would use this company again for future purchases.

  1. I got this camera a couple of weeks ago from my dad whose had it for 2 years. Takes great pictures (very clear and in focus). However, the screen blacks out for a few seconds after taking pictures so if you want to take a series of pictures within a short time, use the motion setting. Also, indoor pictures are sometimes blurry. But overall a good camera that takes awesome pictures for the price.

  2. I got this camera in July 2003 and it took beautiful pictures . The battery door broke at 8 months. I sent it out for repair to Nikon and they took 2 months to fix it. The fix if not under warranty was approximately $150.
It was a great point and shoot camera and I loved it until one day my daughter took a picture in the rain and it's never worked again. I paid about $320 for this camera and I feel ripped off.

I won't buy another Nikon because my son had a Nikon 2100 that went bad after 1.5 yrs. Don't waste your money.

  3. I bought the 3200 new and it was a love hate relationship.
It was an early adopter model with many drawbacks.
Its dismal batery life was only matched by its lathargic performance.
in other words it ate up batterys quick and took pictures S L O W L Y.
It is now relegated to service as the kids camera when batterys are plentiful.

  4. I don't think Nikon is making this camera any more, but for the two years I've had it, it's served me well. I've dropped it multiple times (once so hard that the batteries and card popped out), and I've taken pictures in the rain/snow several times. There is dust/condensation in the manual viewfinder because I have neglected to protect it from sudden changes in temperature. A few times, it has turned on while in my pocket. Despite all my inadvertant abuse, it continues to take fairly good pictures (considering that it's a 3MP point-and-shoot). The 2048x1536 resolution makes for nice smaller photos, and if you use the macro setting, you can even have some control over the depth of field (although the setting is rather fussy).

I never got the software that came with it to work, so I just plug in the Nikon and use iPhoto.

As an amateur photographer, I find this camera fairly limiting, but for straightforward documentation (of, say, family or friend-style events), it does what it's supposed to do.

  5. excellent camera, value for money
unfortunately, the camera is not available as new anywhere anymore

  1. Just after the one year warranty and I turn on the camera to hear loud clicking noises. Have to take the battery out to shut off. "SYSTEM ERROR". $200 to repair from Nikon - oh and they won't tell me what's wrong with it. I'm not the only one. My friend had the same problem, but he had it repaired in greece for $100. I've read that a number of people have had the same problem, actually some on Amazon reviews, where are they now? Way to go Nikon. I won't be a return customer thank you.

  2. This is one of the finest digital cameras that has been sold. Currently Nikon may have "more powerful" but overall less appealing devices out. Two of the 4500's strongest points include the totally enclosed lens system and the swivel design. Both of which were changed in more recent designs by Nikon. Another superb feature includes the macro ability - you can get within 0.8 inches of a subject. This is fantastic for nature photography.

I currently have two of these units. The first 4500 had over 55,000 shots on it before any problems appeared. The second was purchased as a backup while the first was being repaired by Nikon. The only real negative that I have encountered would be Nikon's outrageous repair costs. The zoom button gave out after 55,000 shots (this is heavym mostly outdoor use and it's failure is not a complaint). Nikon wanted $230+ to repair/replace this switch. Considering the camera was only $400 new this was highway robbery! They also wanted an additional $150.00 to re-adhere the rubber finger grip to the camera body!!!!! Such unrealistic repair costs must be to get the user to buy a new camera but only leaves a very bad taste for Nikon's service department instead.

If you can still pick one of these up new or in like-new condition I strongly reccomend it, as there simply has not been a newer model that can do all this unit is capable of.

  3. I've owned this camera for a long time and have have shot thousands of pictures with it. I even use it with a Kaidan panoramic mount and both the fisheye and wide angle lenses without any problems. All I can add is that it is a tough camera with lots of features and great quality.

  4. On the good side, the swivel body is well integrated into the design (great for take picture over the head of crowds or take picture close to the ground), easy to hold (comfortable in the hand), has an optical view finder in addition to an LCD display (makes picture taking in bright sunlight a breeze), fairly rugged, lots of manual adjustments that have well behaved automatic defaults, the PC/Mac software if user friendly & many good features, optical zoom is totally internal (no lenses moving back & forth), excellent macro capability (focuses down to 2" - great for taking pictures of small items for eBay ads), wide selection of exposure times (compatible with time exposures), very good panoramic image stitching mode, very good color rendition, great optics (no perceivable optical distortion at any zoom level)

On the bad side: Poor battery life (make sure to get a couple of spare batteries, you WILL need them), fairly long time delay between pushing the shutter and taking the picture (makes taking action shots very difficult), built in flash is very limited, connection for external flash requires custom Nikon cable, poor auto-focus in low light conditions, slow lens (high f/#).

  5. This is an excellent camera. One of the best features is this camera can be rotated to take picture in any angle. i.e. you can keep the camera a feet above your head and by looking at the LCD display you can take a perfect picture! This is an awesome feature!!

  1. GREAT camera. Got this one for my teenage daughter because it has more storage and image stabilization. Works very well - no complaints. It taking AA batteries fantastic! The pink tone is NOT obnoxious - very quiet and classy.

  2. Great camera to work with for beginners, I needed just a basic camera, with good quality photos worthy of prints and internet display as I do take a lot of photos. Wish it came with an SD card because I take so many photos. I have to go out and buy one. Might not be perfect, might not be fast enough to take them, and if you use the flash too close to a light object it becomes whited out so you can't tell what it is- but if you move back some you can then see what's in the picture. I like it and it is good enough for me. Under $130- for an 8 megapixel is a bargain I think.

  3. The inability of this camera to focus on a specific point in a general scene makes it damn near useless. We made the mistake to take it on vacation and the majority of "general view" shots are out-of-focus. It seems to function well if you zoom-in on the particular focal point so that it occupies a significant portion of the frame, but lacking manual focus capability really hurts this camera.

Some freinds brought along their Sony pocket digital and they did not experience the same problem (except when they used the Nikon). Nikon service was no help whatsoever. They told me to hit the reset button. That made no difference. It is truly an inferior product.

  4. I bought this for my mom since she wanted to upgrade to a digital camera. And pink was the desired color, so pink it was. This is an absolute blessing for those not technologically minded. It's less involved than my L11 with the same sized screen. My mom has taken pics, even deleting some, while she has trouble with opening Word on her laptop majority of the time.

Also, there's crystal clear pics that I've come to expect with the Coolpix line and it manages to dim dark shadows indoors automatically. Worth the money if you just want to carry a camera around just in case something strikes your fancy. And it's small enough that it won't take up massive amounts of room in a purse/tote or small bookbag.

  5. The camera is very easy to use. The only downside is it appears pictures taken in telephoto are always slightly grainy looking.
