  1. I've owned this camera for about a year now and can't honestly say that it was a good purchase.

Things I like most about this camera:

It's a tank - - rock solid, great design for a pocket camera.
Reasonably fast for spontaneous picture taking.
Great for vacations or on-the-go. You'll get great pictures without the wan-a-be photographer look - lugging ten pounds of gear to Jonnie's soccer match!

Things I don't like about this camera:

Because it's so small, you'll find you have several out-of-focus shots due to camera shake/movement as you take the snapshot. You won't find out until you load them up on your computer.
Forget the action shots -- tried many times to adjust using manual mode but all I get is a lot of blur and streaking (great artistic pics however).
You will discover many menus/features as you enter setup mode but you will also need the 200 page online manual to figure them out. For practical purposes you'll use the camera in auto mode and keep it there, unless you have a lot of patience and time on your hands.

    In summary:

Great pocket camera for point-n-shoot use. Good for still shots, but not for anything that moves.

  2. I have read in some of these other reviews about the delay in taking pictures. There seems to be an easy way around this that I have found takes away this one issue in this otherwise nearly perfect product. When you are about to take a picture simply depress the shutter button part way. Do not press it all of the way down so that it takes a picture, just part way. This will prime the camera and you will be able to take a picture instantly when you want.

  3. I hae owned this camera for about a year and have taken some great shots with it. It is good basic a point and shoot vacation camera.

    What I like:
-Small size and solid construction, except for the on/off switch
-Good quality output/pictures for the most part
-Good battery life and multiple card options (SD and Memory stick, although I only use one)

    What I don't like:
-Switch on cover that slides back and forth to both turn off and on as well as protect lense is now broken and renders the camera unusable
-Poor low light capability and performance
-Poor lcd quality and small size
-Poor movie mode that only caputes 320X240 movies
-Menus are confusing and not useful

Would I buy again? I would not buy given what I know about the camera and the other better options out there right now.

  4. This camera works beautifully. It is very simple to use. Close up images are clear and without glare; the red eye reduction works well, too. Nice!

  5. I love this camera. The Minolta Diamge G500 was my first digital camera and it was used and abused. However, it still works today. The camera has more weight than most newer digital cameras but us still compact. It doesn't feel like cheap plastic. Since owning this camers I have purchased a Fuji S700 and a S3IS, none of these have ever taken the quality photos that come from my Dimage. Nor do they stand up to the durability of the Diamge. I have dropped it on an ice skating rink, cement, and it was used weekly for ebay pics. My dimage is still kicking and taking better photos than my fuji and canon. On top of all this, this camera has a very easy to use menu and can be used to just point and shoot. I know it is very functional and durable with great photos.

  1. GOOD CAMERA COMPARED TO OTHERS ON THE MARKET AT THE TIME I BOUGHT IT. TAKES GREAT PIC'S, MY SISTER BOUGHT THE HP AND MINE TAKES BETTER QUALITY PICTURES. ALTHOUGH MY NEXT CAMERA WILL BE ALOT SMALLER. I LOVE THIS ONE!

  2. I bought this camera about a year ago (and am now looking to replace it). I purchased it because it has a very nice lens for a camera in this price range (I paid $159 last year). It also has a metal body (most in this range are plastic).

BUT, (and this is the reason I'm writing this review at all)- the tripod mount makes it utterly useless! I had seen comments about the poorly placed tripod mount- and must say that's something of an understatement. The mount is way off to the side, so if you try to use a small tripod, it falls over!!! The focal distance on macro is also pretty unsatisfactory. Now, if this was a compact camera (hence something I'd use for travel, or just to have an on-hand camera) these shortcomings could be overlooked...but why bother with the bulk if it doesn't give you a large zoom, or compatable lenses, or the ability to use a tripod?

All that said, I'm not sure what the audience is for this camera. The features which would recommend it are in my review title: sold build, nice lens, low price point.
the engineering leaves something to be desired.

  3. This camera has the speed needed in snapping off multiple photos without stopping. The reset speed is remarkably faster than I had expected. This camera does just about everything I ever wanted to do using a digital camera. I enter photo contests, and get great results. The Optical zoom is more than the average 3X Optical. It seems to do anything other cameras do, only with that little added touch. Can't beat the price, and appears to withstand punishment; no bumps or bruises.

  4. I have owned a few digital cameras before and hands down, this is the worst of all. The zoom was messed up after a couple of months of purchasing and the red-eye reduction never worked. Adding to that, the customer service was horrible. It took the service people almost 2 months to tell me that I need to pay to get the camera fixed, even though the camera was still under warranty and it was the camera's fault. I was not provided with any explanation as to why I need to pay to get it repaired and never heard back from them. I may have used this camera for 3 months and never got good pictures out of it. It used to shut down by itself. At first I thought it was the batteries but that was not the case. Stay away from this camera.

  5. This is the second one of these that I have bought-
The first one was accidently washed in the washing machine.
I must say that it held up pretty well-
I worked great except that the flash did not work.
I have entered my photographs in the county fair the last two years-
I won 3rd place the 1st year and got 1st place this past year-and there was some pretty good stuff there.
I love my camera and couln't wait to replace it-
I felt like I had lost my best friend.

  1. I bought my 7HI used about 6 months ago. I come from a manual-focus film background and this is my first digital. Overall, I am pleased with the results I get from this camera. I like the fact you can manual focus. Also, the ability to use filters such as a polarizer and black and white filters is a bonus. (This is one of my main complaints about many point and shoots-no filter threads). The ability to shoot RAW and TIFF files is also an important feature. I've gotten some great Macro shoots with this camera too. The overall image quality seems quite good. There is some noise especially at higher ISO. I am not too impressed with the landscape shots I've taken. Even at f8 it still seems that something is out of focus. The lack of depth of field markings on the lens does not help. You can not use "Hyperfocal focusing" techniques. Image quality in my opinion still can not touch film- especially slide film. I find too the autofocus is slow with moving subjects

So far I've had no major problems with this camera. Every now and then it does something weird but I just take the batteries out and reboot and it seems OK.It has many great features on it and, thus, is not for the inexperienced photographer unless you just want to shoot on program all the time and not use the extra features. Overall, a good camera. I would probably not buy one new but if you can pick one up used for a good price then I would recommend it over a point and shoot style digicams or if you can't afford a digital SLR.

  2. I purchased my Minolta Dimage 7Hi new 2 years ago. Performance was fine up until two weeks ago when the camera's EVF and LCD displays went completely black (no images displayed). Contacted Sony (where you now have to go for Minolta service) as instructed and found that the base flat rate for repair was $211 plus $22 shipping. They got me once, but they won't get me twice!
    MadMax

  3. I purchased my Minolta two years ago. After about 1 year the flash housing came apart, and now the camera's EVF and LCD displays went completely black (no images displayed). The same has happened to Mad Max's camera - read his review. The charge to repair is in excess of $ 350.00. I would dump the camera but don't want to contaminate the land fill.

  4. When I purchased this camera 3 years ago (2003), it was about as close as you could get to a dSLR without forking over $2000 to buy one. Given that context, I would have rated the camera 4.5 to 5 stars at the time.

But now, with so many new, affordable dSLRs available, I couldn't offer more than 2 stars.

Some time in the last 6 months, after sitting unused for about 3-4 months, my CCD suddenly went out, causing all images to appear in an odd shade of purple. Needless to say, it will costs several hundred dollars to have it check out...

The autofocus is far too slow by current standards, and shooting moving objects with autofocus is next to impossible. Although the zoom is a true manual ring/gear mechanism, the manual focus ring is electronic, and therefore not as tactile or responsive as a true SLR.

The camera is quite a battery hog, so I nearly always run off an AC adaptor or an external battery back.

    The good things:
Great image quality (when using low ISO).
Convenient 7x optical zoom (300mm equivalent)
Easy to use, with many onboard image processing options.
Built in Quicktime movies with audio
    Direct output to A/V
Fairly quick dumps to high-speed CF cards

    Bad:
Evidently the CCD is not built to last (see previous two posts)
Tripod mount not centered along axis of lens
    Slow autofocus
    Battery hog
Manual focus is not truly manual

Summary, I'm probably going to toss this in the back of the closet and buy a Canon Digital Rebel XT... (For a bit over half of what I paid for my minolta...)

  5. I got this camera new back in 2003 and it served me faithfully for 5 years before the camera's compact flash reader konked out. I learned how to do better photography with this tool for my Maxxums. This is an intuitive tank of a camera and has an excellent lens that many overlook as it has a constant aperture of f2.8 and a zoom range of 28-200mm. This Achilles heal of this camera is it's mixed blessing of the use of the very common AA battery: and does this thing eat them! I already had a good supply of AA batteries and that an easy issue to deal with. I miss using this camera and took many memorable shots with it before it gave up the ghost. This review is a little late :) but I feel it's due because I really dig this camera and it was the one that got me using digital to help me be better at 35mm film.

  1. In case your autofocus stops working (which mine did after attempting to zoom). Power cycling, reseting to factory default, lens cleaning did not help, but after several zoom outs and ins, the autofocus came back. Apparently, the zoom mechanicism some how interfered with the autofocus. Typically, I do not use the zoom feature and will avoid it in the future. Otherwise, for 2+ years, this has been a very good camera.

  2. The X50 is the ultra ultracompact! But mine had a very common problem. After weeks of normal use and NO DROPPING the LCD got stuck in the ultra high contrast mode! You can see "ghosts" on the screen when you turn it a certain way and you can read some of the menu items. I even used the included A/V cable to see the menus on my TV and adjust the contrast - no luck. So I did the online customer service request for a warranty repair and received the RMA. There was NO DAMAGE to the LCD, it just wouldn't display properly. My X50 still took wonderful pictures, I would just use the button to turn off the barely-functioning display. There were no other problems with my camera. Weeks later I was told by Sony/Konica/Minolta service that my camera (just a few weeks old) suffered from corruption and that they would CHARGE ME for the covered repair. I didn't pay, they sent it back totally BROKEN. No power, no pics, & no recourse for me. They refu$e to return it to the working condition it was in. THEY are CORRUPT!

  3. I have found this camera to be one of the very best of its type. The operating system is ultra quick, fastest of any digital camera I have ever seen so you can grab that quick picture you might otherwise miss. The pictures are ultra sharp and can easily be enlarged to 11X14. The zoom feature is easy to use and there are more features then most people could ever use. The rechargeable battery lasts a very long time even when heavly using the flash. An added bonus is it has a real viewfinder that makes it easy to use in bright sun. It is easily pocketable, pants or shirt. Its one weakness is the viewscreen, which can be easily broken if the camera is accidently dropped on its edge. The camera is tough enough to keep working, but you'll have to wait to down load your SD card onto your computer to view your shots if you were unluckly enough to break the screen. In general, this is a tough little camera. Too bad Konica Minolta got out of the camera business and too bad Kodak or some other company didn't pick up this model or the X60 and continue manufacturing it. It would take a digital SLR to take better quality pictures.

  4. I bought this camera and within 6 months the screen broke. I would not recommend buying this camera, the company does not have a warranty and there is nothing to do once it is broken.

  5. Great little camera.....fits in my purse. I love the fact that it has a rechargeable battery as I bought a second one so I am always ready!!! The battery holds a charge a long time. Good pictures and I find the camera easy to use.It has quite a zoom feature too. It has many features that I should use but I have not taken the time to learn about.

  1. After 2 years the view finder became distorted and out of alignment. Hopefully it can be repaired but there seems to be a lot of used cameras of this model advertised. I wonder why?

  2. I have had this camera for about three years, an it is a great machine. It is small, light weight, and it takes o.k. pictures. When I bought it, it only held 12 picture, (I don't know why)but I recently bought a new memory card, and it is great. You can make voice recordings, and take small video clips (35 seconds). The battery life is ok, but not what I would have wanted. Overall, this camera is a great digital camera.

  3. I bought this when I was mobilized for OIF. I kept it in the pocket of my blouse the whole time, shooting pictures every where I went. Great shots, plenty of storage space. I never felt the need to use max resolution. Unfortuantely I lost it last week and am shopping for a replacement. I'm checking out the X31 and X50 which cost less than this one was.

  4. Cute size encourages leisure use, but beware of the fragility of this camera. I dropped it and broke the cheap plastic battery cover and the tiny plastic battery hold-down tab. Minolta wanted $181 to replace. Seems like a rip-off since these are simple plastic parts and are easily accessible. Poor service.

  5. After my first beloved Minolta Dimage X Camera was accidentally lost last year, I really wished to have another, as this camera took some of the best, clear, and beautiful pictures of any digital camera I had ever used or seen. I also never had a problem with it, so I looked for and purchased not one, but two used Minolta Dimage X cameras from two different Amazon sellers. The first camera's shutter button jammed after around 100 pictures were taken and no longer works. The second camera took nothing from day one but foggy, blurred pictures whenever the zoom lens was even slightly adjusted, and the only clear pictures were those that did not utilize the zoom option. And again, after taking only 125 pictures on the second camera the shutter button fell off and it also no longer works.
I'm out over $150.00 with two busted cameras and would not advise anyone to buy this camera used. I give this camera and my Amazon shopping experience "zero" stars.

  1. i can only say that i wish i could have afforded the $1100 dollars new
price in 2002 because the image quality of the 7i is increadable.

  2. I got this camera *years* ago! I still work with it occasionally, but back in it's hayday, I used it for bulb photography with lightning. The plus was using infinity and not autofocus (because the autofocus is horrendous), but the negatives were a maximum 60 second bulb and lots of noise. Of course, back when this camera was $1,000+, it was pretty good. Still, in the daylight it takes beautifully vivid photos. I upgraded the firmware on it just before Konica halted the production of all cameras, which was supposed to fix the autofocus, but didn't make any difference to me. It's been through rain, snow and heat and has still held up. She's probably been through at least 10,000 pictures (lots of lightning photos that contained no lightning, probably every 95 in 100 were deleted). Very robust. Still gets four stars despite it's problems. I'll keep it til it dies!

  3. I GAVE THIS ITEM AS A GIFT.I BOUGHT IT 30 DAYS OR SO BEFORE I NEEDED IT. GOT WORD THAT IT WAS DEFECTIVE. I EMAILED THE COMPANY THROUGH AMAZON WITH NO RESPONSE SO I CALLED THE COMPANY AND LEFT A MESSAGE, NO RESPONSE. BE CAREFUL.

  4. I recently purchased a 7i through Amazon's marketplace, and have been having a blast with it. The lens is fantastic- wide angle all the way to long zoom. The manual zoom makes this camera feel like a proper SLR. The camera gives great feedback on the LCD about what an exposure will look like. The autofocus is good, but hunts a bit sometimes... so locking on to something and keeping the shutter half down is the way to go. The battery usage is pretty heavy, and you need a spare set (or two) of good new NiMH batteries if you're planning on shooting more than 150 shots in a day. In my experience, 2100 mah hybrid NiMH batteries last about 3 days of intermittent use.

The images that come out of this camera have been uniformly great. Some people have complained about noise at higher ISO settings, and yes, there is noise... that looks just like high ISO film grain. Sometimes I want that grainy effect, and cranking the ISO to 800 gets it for me.

I'm very happy with this camera, even if it is 6 years old. It is a shame that Minolta went out of the camera business, because this is a fantastic image catcher.

  5. How to start... I'm a street photographer as a hobby, and have been eyeing this camera and it's older brothers the 7hi(copycat) and A-series for a while. I really don't have an interest in dSLRs since I have a Nikon f100. That's the camera I do paid work with. Having a certain itch for FULL MANUAL photography led me to this little wonder, and after using it, I have to say, I'm humbled.

    - First of all, the magnesium alloy body is the most well made body I've felt short of the Casio z75's aluminum body.
    - Many people complain about the auto focus and manual focus. Let me enlighten you. This camera has the same autofocus that all slrs and P&S'rs have. it's a horizontal strip of pixels that checks contrast. Make sure you line up your camera along vertical details or turn it sideways for horizontal details when autofocusing. It's SIMPLE. Many people also complain about manual focus. This is how it works. Hit the zoom button, focus. Half-cock the shutter to get a full frame preview. Let it go to go back to zoom so you can see how sharp you have the image. When it's ready, hit shutter. Very easy.
    - The image quality sits in the bottom 2/5ths of all SLRs.
    - The manual focus is as sensitive as the Fuji s7000's manual focus ring and is very comfortable to use.
    - The manual zoom and macro modes are impressive.
    - The LCD and EVF, while low res, do the job nicely. I could focus in on anything with magnifier(used to this from using the s7000)
    - The live exposure update is very well implemented. Instead of a meter or (like in some slr's, a color becon), it just shows you how exposed the shot is, with is very good on Minolta's part.
    - Yes it's a battery hog. Buy 2500+ ma rechargeable batteries.
    - The continuous shot mode and high speed continuous shot modes are really useful.
    - I could go on, but I'd be rambling.

Simply put, if you're a good photographer and you're not spoiled by your optic viewfinder, you will love this P&S. If you happen to order a bad one, send it back. Make sure you get a tested and proven working 7i. These cameras are keepers if you can take good care of them.

  1. The uniqueness of this camera, as compared to many of its analogs, is the availability and quality of the black-and-white mode for serious creative photographers. The results are comparable to the real film but with digital manipulation, the camera provides a more versatile and efficient application. The examples of black-and-white images taken by this camera can be seen at:http://pathology2.jhu.edu/shihlab/index.cfm. The only things need to be improved for this camera are: 1) the autofocusing function is too slow and sometimes not accurate especially in the dim light; 2) the range of aperture is relatively limited. Overall, this camera is probably the only digital one for photographers who are seeking taking black-and-white images.

  2. While this camera boasts lots of features, and for the most part that is true, it is not easy to use. There is so many buttons to change to get the right photo, it is time comsuming and awkward.

Battery life- none- batteries are only good for about 20 pictures then, new ones must be put in.

Quality of pictures are variable and enhancements need to be done on almost all pictures taken.

Eye piece and other connected plastic pieces seem to fall off easily and permanently

The worst is the video, the quality compared to lesser priced camera is poor and WIHTOUT SOUND. What good is that.

Overall I would go with another camera and I will. Most people don't need 5+ megapixels anyway.

  3. I've had many digital cameras and this is by far the best out of all of them. Although it's only 5mp it gives out great quality pictures, this is due to the size of the lens. I've taken several award winning photographs with it, and carry it everywhere I go.
When I first got the camera I realized it was geared towards people who are knoledgable about cameras, there are many differant setting in many differant places and to be quite honest, you need to know them because the auto feature sucks. The autofocus is slow, the auto light meter tends to read on the dark side and the auto shutter is a bit slower than I like. If you put it into manual mode and focus yourself, set the light meter yoursself and make sure the shutter speed is appropriate you will be very happy with the results. It also sucks batteries like no other camera I've ever seen it you use the viewfinder alot. My suggestion is to get a few good sets of lithium batteries and keep the viewfinder off, then you will get a good 50-75 picts out of a set of batteries.

    [...]

  4. Having decided to visit China............I was told,by other world travlers, " do not take anything big, as far as camera's along" .to much weight, size, just to much ---- explained like this------ no dammaged film,-digital ,has finally arrived....etc. . no inspection and on and on....so as such, I was convinced .So, I went looking for "Digital"... with luck I chose Minolta Dimage-7 and with out any reservation,I could not have made a better choice.the zoom could not be greater for me the close up.wow wow wow, and over all wow .............I have printed 20x30,s that look like they belong a museum... When I had my showing, ...with 30 pieces in all, ..... and placed on display, in the Hospital for Special Care a hospital in New Britain Ct. where people that are checked in may never leave out due to severe condition, auto accident, skiing accident, or even swimming accident or a stroke. Having hung my works, I had people that had not been out of their beds and in the hall or in their wheel chairs for a long while, , going up and down the halls admiring my display and thanking me for my presentation. Thank you Minolta, you made my life works....."work" ......like never before....... My greatest reward of my career, came when this wonderful wonderful happy lady wheeled up to me.......she thanked me personally.

  5. I bought this camera second hand for about $250 and originally when first introduced, was selling for about $1500..
And, the reason I bought it was because it could take 'INFRARED" photos. And plus for this camera was that when shooting infrared,
you could see what you were about to shoot by looking at the viewfinder..

I say this because on many of the cameras that have the ability to shoot infrared, you simply cannot see what you
are about to shoot when looking through the viewfinder... I don't know why that is, but I understand that to be true.

I've had great success with this camera in shooting infrared photos from the very beginning of my attempting
    to do so..

I'm rating this camera four stars because I don't care for its 'ERGOnOMICS'...by that I mean, the placement of
the camera various functions which I will not explain here since it would be too involved...

But for shooting infrared photos, this camera is a total WINNER!..
I'll try to attach some of my infrared stuff for you to see what I've been talking about.

  1. I was looking for another digital camera to supplement my pocket digital (Optio 330rs). The Optio has served me well and will always take with me because of its portability. I wanted a camera with more functionality and overall quality and was willing to sacrifice some portability.

I've narrowed down my choices to these: Nikon 5700, Panasonic Z10 and Minolta A1. After much research and going to retailers to "test drive" the cameras, I finally settled on the Minolta. Actually, I did purchase the Nikon first but returned it to Amazon un-opened because of my concern with it's slow autofocus and low light performance. The Z10 was a strong contender, it has a great lens plus optical stabilization but it was too bulky and had a smaller sensor. Big camera, big lens with a tiny sensor hmmm, somehow I did not feel comfortable with this combination.

The Minolta A1 has a decent lens, good size stabilized sensor. It didn't have the long range zoom of the Panasonic but instead it had a wider angle which I find much more useful.

What I like most about this camera is it's image stabilizing feature which was just a afterthought when I bought it. It soon proved to be invaluable. For example, on a trip to Lake George NY I was photographing a canon(not the camera) firing demonstration, the bang was so loud that I jumped and triggered the shutter involuntarily. Yet the end result was a sharp photo at peak action See http://www.pbase.com/image/31903396 ,notice the ear protection worn by the soldier.

Another shot that was helped by the image stabilizer was a portrait taken at a museum, indoor, no flash and very tight, almost macro. Amazingly even the brushstrokes appeared sharp on the photo. I think the shutterspeed went down to 1/20th.

Having this camera is like carrying around an electronic tripod! I've taken hand held shots of fireworks, street lights, buildings at dusk and full zooms in low lighting.

As far as the megapixel count, 5MP is plenty. Although the 8mp Minolta A2 is out, it's almost $1,000. The A1 is a real bargain at around $550, It is basically the same camera as the A2 except for the MP count. Besides who needs 8MP unless you crop heavily or print posters. I even turn it down to 3MP sometimes to fit more shots and a quicker shot to shot performance, still 3MP is big enough to print 8x10's.

    A few minor issues:
One thing the camera can improve on is it's dimensions, I would like it to be a little bit smaller, maybe like the Nikon 5700, and the proportions are a little awkward, it's almost as wide as it is deep and tall. Somehow this makes it a little tedious to carry around, I've permanently removed the lens hood to make it easier to carry (But the camera won't look as Cool!). So this not a carry everywhere camera, but it complement nicely with my pocket camera.

Another issue I have with this camera is that the viewfinder is electronic, basically it's a tiny second LCD that replaces the traditional glass viewfinder. Using electronic viewfinder is not very satisfying, you get a pixelated image with awful colors and when panning it feels like the LCD can't catch up to what your eyes are trying to follow.

Lastly, many people may find it dissappointing when they first see the photos right off the camera. The default settings for this camera is very neutral, therefore the images may look very flat. This is because as a high-end camera, minolta wanted to leave room for post-processing for advanced users. For photographers who do not want to do any post-processing the camera must be set at a higher contrast, saturation and sharpening.

    Pros:
    Larger sensor than similar cameras
    Great lens
    Wideangle zoom
    Image stabilizer
    Fast autofocus

    cons:
Slightly too big to carry anywhere, anytime.
    Flimsy CF door
Electronic view finder hard to get used to.

  2. This camera is my favorite. The pictures have outstanding clarity, and the camera is easy to operate. It can practically take pictures on its own!! I use it alot for puppy pics, and I can't tell you how easily I can capture the pups in motion...there's not the normal lag time of a typical digital, so I can capture the moment as it really happened instead of the formerly seen blank view...or the view of a puppy's tail!! It's a Minolta...of course!!

  3. I purchased this camera a year ago. I love the fact that a lot of the settings can be changed without going into the menu. The anti-shake feature is very helpful as I am a senior citizen with severe arthritis of the shoulders. Holding a camera steady is a challenge at times. This was the main selling point for me.
I have used the camera for scenic shots, portraits, weddings and flowers with insects. The pictures are fantastic.
    Highly recommend.

  4. I've had this for several years, bought it when it first came out. I like it very much, it took the place of 35mm film SLRs that I'd used for years.

It is complicated to take maximum advantage of it's potential but it takes great pictures on the auto setting.

I really like the electric contacts that determine if your hand is grasping the camera. If not it shuts off so battery isn't drained.

Two features that make me reduce its rating. It is very difficult to tell depth of field if you are using it's manual aperture and the photos are vignetted if you use a filter and I like to keep a polarizing filter on all lenses that can be fitted.

Decent size, not too big. But I do borrow my wife's pocket Canon for ease of use and portability

  5. Cannot say enough about this camera. Have it for the past 4 years and I absolutely love it. Takes great pictures (250+) on a single charge. Has many advanced features, so don't spend the money unless you are going to use all the nice features. Even though this camera is easy to use, I would suggest this camera for advanced users to make the price worth it.

  1. Takes great pictures, easy to use, the different modes make this camera great for any setting. I use this for taking pics of everything, from high speed cars to flowers. Downloading is easy with the included software. Also, just to mention, I use regular AA batteries and they seem to last a long time. I used this camera for a 3 day car show, took hundreds of pics, downloaded and still had battery life left.
    I Highly Recommend this Camera !! AA++

  2. I purchased this camera in October 2005, and have not been disappointed in any feature in the 2 1/2 years since. It takes amazing pictures, and all I do is point and shoot on the auto setting. I set it to the finest quality and largest file size, and can crop a small section out of a shot and then print out great quality prints in 11 X 14 (probably larger, but that's as large as I have done). I frequently have to argue with the employees at the photo departments that I am not illegally duplicating professional, copy-righted pictures! I love this camera, and highly recommed it!

  3. Hastle free purchase. Was updated of every step of the process until merchandise was received.

  4. Very pleased with my purchase
    Received in a timely manner
Camera and accessories in excellent condition
Package in great condition as well

  5. I always wanted to try the Z6 and so here it. In general a very poor camera, but good optics, macro ability, and 12 zoom with anti shake that seems to work. The ergonamics and feel of the camera are outstanding as it feels a natural part of your hand. However, must shoot in ISO 50, anything more has lots of noise. The camera is forever wanting to over expose and so pictures must be shot at -1. Also general image quality is poor. The auto features are weak and useless. Battery life is OK as long as you are using rechargable. Slow to focus AF. Also no TIFF or RAW ability for higher quality image. The camera makes you work!

I had a Dimage S414 which has excellent optics and photo quality so was hoping for more from the Z6.

Check out my photos which make the Z6 seem better than it is.

  1. Pros:
    * Uses AA batteries and can take nearly 250 pictures without a flash on newly charged batteries.
    * Outstanding picture clarity outdoors.
    * Incredible pictures at night when set on a tripod or flat surface and using the timer. Can set shutter to stay open up to 15 seconds. Only Z2 & Z3 allow that -- later models only allow about 5 seconds.
    * 10x zoom is awesome, and takes great pictures outdoors even when hand held without antishake technology.
    * Hot shoe for adding a flash.
    * Extremely easy to use. My 7 y/o takes great pictures and movies with it, can download and adjust to sepia or b/w all by himself.
    * Camera is full of features: ISO 50-400, movies up to 800x600, night movie mode, auto or manual white balance, no special software or equipment needed to get pictures off camera, hook up to computer or tv for slideshow, 2 macro modes, multiple flash settings, burst mode, timer, sepia/b&w/vivid color/natural color modes, sharpnes & contrast controls, able to use additional lenses, etc.
    * More rugged than it feels. It's our family camera -- used by little kids and adults. We've taken tens of thousands of pictures with it in all kinds of lighting and weather -- it's been dropped countless times -- and it still works faithfully taking great pictures.
    * Uses SD cards.

    Cons:
    * When adjusting the zoom while taking a movie you hear the camera motor on the sound of the movie.
    * No anti-shake technology. Available in the Z3 and up.
    * Taking pictures indoors, in normal low light is a challenge sometimes.

I love this camera and am going to buy another Konica Minolta -- probably Z3.

  2. After 2 1/2 years my Z2 camera stopped working. When I turn it on the shutter makes a noise and the memory light comes on and stays on. The lens does not extend. I went to the KM website only to find the company no longer makes cameras and Sony has taken the responsibility for repairs. Sony charges a flat rate of $181 to work on the camera, plus parts, and we pay the shipping to get it there. There is an internal battery in the camera but only the mfg can replace it. Will that cost me the flat rate +? Will replacing the battery fix my problem?

  3. I have had this camera for almost 5 years. I have taken literally thousands of pictures with it and have never had a problem. I got it shortly after my son was born and have since used it to capture and freeze moments of his life. I take pictures almost on a daily basis not only of my family but also of nature and pretty much anything else that looks interesting. By no means am I a professional but in my opinion for a 5 yr old 4mp camera it still takes the sharpest most vibrant pictures. My mom recently bought my dream camera for herself and after using her camera then going back to my little minolta I still prefer my minolta.

  4. I bought this camera in 2004 and have used it extensively. I have taken it to Kamchatka, to Egypt, and many places in the US. This camera is capable of taking amazing pictures, easily and consistently. It works great, is easy to carry, and comfortable to use. Four years later, it's still my favorite camera to use when I want that 'special shot'. I wish Konica Minolta was still in business!

  5. Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 4MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical ZoomFor more bang for the buck I would choose my Dimage Z2 anytime. It's fast on focus and outdoor shots are the best.
