  1. I cant believe that noone has commented on this camera yet. I love it and it takes absolutely gorgeous detailed photos and found the video feature handy when taping my grandson on his grandpas fourwheeler I took a nice film and a few prints and in less than an hour I had a dvd to give to others of our weekend in the Adirondacks. the camera is durable, like a titanium brushed finish, very solid in hand, no problems with camera and have had about a year now. I can't believe the detail in the closeups of my pets etc. Great camera, great buy.

  1. It's lighter weight than my previous favorite camera (broken while on
plane), takes better pictures, has a better zoom, it's just perfect!!!
This is my "happiest" purchase, so far, from Amazon.com.

  2. It takes pretty good pictures but it's slower than Jake's dog. Press the shutter release after a lengthy auto focus and wait awhile for it to 'click'. Then wait some more while it saves the picture (it shows a message asking you if you want to delete it, a play to make you believe it's waiting on YOU.) The only plus I can think of right now is the 8X optical zoom.

Now it doesn't want to do anything, pretty much. In the docking port it shows that it's on aux power and won't recharge the batteries. The lens comes out but a get a multitude of different actions: red light flashing, lcd screen won't come on, no battery charge indicator because the first screen won't stay on long enough, etc., etc. Even the diagnostic test (hold the flash button and turn on the camera) doesn't work anymore. I guess it's just a boat anchor now unless someone has a better suggestion.

I think I'll just go top notch and buy a GOOD camera, like a Nikon D2x!!

  3. I liked the look, feel, and operation of this camera, it served me quite well and has now been passed on to my daughter to go along with her new HP computer. I replaced my 945 with an R967, because I wanted a higher resolution camera, and the smaller size of the 967 was a huge plus. Anyway, the only things I did not like about my 945 are a)it SUCKS BATTERIES!!! and b)this cam does not take pix in low light well (although I must admit I am far from an expert on how to do this anyway)

As far as dealing with HP, I'm quite pleased, they are fast and competitively priced.

  4. I loved this camera as I too was reminded of my old 35 SLR. The HP945 took beautiful pictures and the zoom was great! I had this camera 3 years and couldn't even pretend to know how many pics it actually took. More than I could ever count. With that said, about 4 months ago the LCD began having lines in it which also came out the the pictures. IT was sudden. My huspand said it was "over use" LOL. Anyway, called HP which couldn't do anything about it as it was 3 years old. Did offer me a discount off a new, diffrent model of my choice. After reviewing the options I decided I was better off just looking into finding me something else. I chose the FujiS700. I was excited about this one too. But two months after I purchased it, the LCD stopped working, went black. As it was over 30 day's old, the place purchased wouldn't take it back so I sent it back to Fuji. At my cost. Anyway, I'm back to looking for another camera while waiting for the Fuji to be fixed. I should have stuck with HP.

  5. I have owned this camera for over 3 years. Picture quality is amazing, particularly if you are into landscapes. True colors are obtainable in any light if you know how to adjust the manual tuning features. My main gripe is the periodic shutting down of the camera . It occasionally locks up with lens out or just turns itself off. When this happens you need to remove the batteries and replace or simply turn it back on. Lag time for shutter action from button push is too slow but average for this level of camera and price. Lithium batteries last a reasonable amount of time for this size of device. Re-chargeable batteries last about " 15 mintues" it seems.

  1. I have had this camera since December of 2005.But i got i with the printer too.The printer is very good. But more can be said for the camera. For a few reasons The battery life is very poor.Like it can probley last you 30 mins at the most. And some times if you take a lot of pictures you can use them from the camera. And it will say photo can not be found. And sometimes whene you turn the camera on the screen will be off.And the screen is kind of bleek and dark and blurry too.And the video quality is horrible. And when you are taking a video with the camer the videos are very blurry and poor. And when you take a video you can look at the video on the camera but you CAN NOT HEAR THE SOUND.You have to have a computer to here the sound. And my grandpa has a canon and you can watch the video and hear the sound on the camera too!!!!!And in my opinon HP makes better computers then cameras. Thanks.

  2. I've had this camera for well over a year, and I love it. It does take a while to recharge its flash and that has frustrated me at times. This can be helped, but not totally avoided, by always having freshly recharged batteries.

It does eat batteries quickly, but I find that as long as I recharge them enough, it's fine. It only takes two AA batteries and most rechargeable batteries come in sets of at least four, so I always have an extra two with me and switch them out if need be. Of course, if you're the kind of person who always forgets to/never charges their batteries, this is a bad choice for you.

It takes wonderful pictures. I've used it in pretty much any setting you can think of and it's been great. If you leave it someplace cold it'll take a bit to turn back on, but I imagine any other camera would have a similar problem.

Some other reviewers have said this isn't a hardy piece of machinery. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've dropped the thing a number of times and it's still good as new. A little scratched, of course, but it works just as well as it did when it was new.

I pretty much recommend this to anyone, unless you have a problem with being patient about things. Yes, the flash can take a bit to recharge, so just anticipate that. Make sure your batteries are charged. That's all. =)

  3. This is the most over priced and poorest quality cameras on the market. I have returned mine twice for repairs and now the auto focus is going out. The camera's MACRO function is a joke and if your looking for a camera that can take pictures in low light then this ain't it because it won't. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!

  4. This camera i have had for a while, and i personally think it stinks. It is somewhat heavy for this range. The mega pixels are only 5, zoom is only 3x, and it takes AA batteries. It's battery life is not very good, it is heavy, and overall i would not suggest it.

  5. HP PhotoSmart M417 - Digital camera - 5.2 Mpix - optical zoom: 3 x - supported memory: MMC, SD lOVE THIS CAMERA EASY TO USE BUT STILL TAKES GREAT PICTURES.FITS IN YOUR POCKET BUT THE PICTURES ARE CRYSTAL CLEAR!

  1. This camera was a big disappointment. It is my first, and so far, only digital camera. My sister has a different brand camera and whenever we have family get-togethers, I have to have her email me the pictures or put them on a CD for me. I won't even bother to bring my own digital camera....the flash hardly ever goes off!!! I have tried different batteries...AA and rechargeable and it makes no difference. I am 100% sure the batteries are fully charged and the flash rarely goes off...even if I have it set to "Flash On"....And, like some other reviewers have said, the battery life does not last long and there is very little space on the camera itself for pictures. An SD card is a must, but I would not recommend this camera to my worst enemy. Sorry, but that has been my experience. On the few occasions that the flash actually DID go off, the pictures did come out great, though. Frustrating to use when you are about to take a great picture and NO flash. No fun.

  2. This is my first digital camera. I dont know why everyone has been giving it such low ratings, I think it a really nice little camera for what I paid to get it.

All of the controls are pretty easy to figure out, it takes only about 30 minutes of screwing around to get it.

Im able to keep upwards of 700 photos or an hour and a half of video on the thing because Ive got a 1GB SD card though.

Batteries will work for a long time if you use better batteries.

There are defineately better cameras than this one, but they are higher priced. This is my first camera, and Ive taken alot of really nice photos sofar, and it has not given me trouble once in the months that I have been using it.

  3. I wish I could give this camera NEGATIVE 10 stars!!!

The screen died on me after a few months of use. I did not drop it or anything--it just froze up and went black. It acted like it was taking a picture, but there was no picture. HP said it was a 'hardware' issue, so they sent me another one. A month after my year warranty was up (keep in mind that this replacement camera was NOT a year old, but my year warranty from my original purchase date was up), it happened again. Basically, both of these cameras did not last a year.

Plus, the camera EATS batteries, and the connection to the computer via USB sometimes wouldn't work, which I've read elsewhere this is a common problem with this camera.

DON'T BUY IT! Try a Canon instead. My sister swears by Canon and has not been disappointed. I should have listened to her, but I thought HP would be more compatible with my computer. Boy, I was WRONG!!!

  4. As some already mentioned, battery life is not long, but with a couple of rechargeable batteries, you should be fine. After all, you will have a descent camera at a low price!

  5. Purchased two cameras. Scratches on both, one doesn't work at all. Never buy reconditioned products.

  1. If you are looking for a cheap camera with a higher res. then here it is. Like I said, you get what you pay for.

  2. I bought this camera for Christmas and it is absolutely horrible! It takes really bad quality pictures and it has a very noisy lens. It's a great looking camera but the screen is only 2 inches which is very small. This camera is not a good buy for it's class.

  3. The HP Photosmart M527 is an all around well built camera, espicially considering the price it can be purchased at.

The body is all metal and it's honestly built like a small tank. It feels good and strong in your hands. The weight of the camera is also very evenly balanced, so you can hold it in one hand and get clear shots in almost any situation. The ergonomics and overall design also help with this. Every button on the camera can be accessed with just your one hand.

The screen is very nice, bright, and colorful, even on the lowest brightness setting. I really don't have a problem with it being "only" 2". I can't imagine a situation where the "small" screen would negatively impact the ability to accurately frame a shot.

The image quality, for the price, is also fantastic. The shots can be a little noisey. But honestly, how many cameras in this price range will not produce noisey pictures? Considering the price, the image quality is great. Sure, it doesn't look as good as a Canon that costs an extra hundred dollars. But that doesn't mean the image quality is bad. The noise disappears completely when you shrink the picture down to fit in an email. Afterall, you're not emailing friends pictures that are 3.3MB in size each, are you? ;) When printed out, using a photo printer or getting them done professionally, the prints are very colorful with good detail, definition, and color saturation. They will definitely be able to sit next to all of your other framed prints, or go in a photo album, and only you will ever know that it is a digital print because nobody else will be able to see the difference in quality.

The camera also offers multiple shooting modes that can help improve the image quality in certain situations. For example, it has a "Portrait" mode which can help the look of closeups dramatically. It also has the obvious "Night" mode which will take care of any dark or murky pictures in low light. There is a "Beach and Snow" mode which will help you with those high contrast shots in bright lighting. It has a Macro mode which has obvious uses. You can also manually adjust certain other parameters, such as ISO speed. However, you cannot adjust shutter speed or more advanced settings like that. But if you find your pictures aren't exactly what you want them to be, there are definitely modes that can help you get the quality you desire.

The camera also has a decent movie mode. It can record roughly 30 minutes of slightly better than VHS quality video, with sound, on a 512MB memory card. It's not very good in low light, but it can be good for those quick moments when you are out and wish you had a video camera. However, you cannot zoom in or out while recording. You can adjust the zoom before and after recording. But not during.

The camera also has very extensive photo editing features built-in, like the famous "slimming" effect, and you can do other things like add borders. It also has a very thorough Help system.

There are only a couple of minor gripes I have about this camera. The first is battery life. Real world battery life is about 100 shots on two alkaline batteries. So get some rechargables or lithium batteries. The second gripe is that the memory card slot is right in there with the batteries. So that can be a little bit of a pain if you use a memory card reader instead of hooking the camera up to your computer to transfer pictures.

Overall its a great camera for the price, as long as you keep you are realistic with what to expect. You're getting a complete package for not very much money. Not many other cameras under the $200 price range offer such a complete package. If you're looking for a great camera on the cheap that is built well and has a ton of features, this is definitely one to look at. However, if you want absolutely pristine image quality, you're better off looking at the $250+ Canon PowerShot A6x0 series. For me, this camera is the one that is built like a tank and will get taken with me everywhere I go. But I will keep a higher quality Canon around for those times when image quality is more important than the quick, yet good, shot.

  4. I've had digital cameras before, but this one is has it all. If you want to take really good pictures of your life then buy this camera. The HP Photosmart M527 6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom has more features than I'll commonly use , but I think all of them will come in handy in specific settings. Easy to use and great photo quality.

  5. The HP camera is very easy to use and takes great pictures, its small enough to carry comfortable but does not feel fragile

  1. Got R507 bundled with HP laptop. Thought it was just a cheap one. Boy am I happy with it. It has so many features that the book is 180 pages long. All the light condition compensations realy work well. I go inside and turn off the flash. You do not need it, camera compensates. I used 35mm single lens cameras since 1952, and lost my Pentax just before I got the R507. Do not want a 35mm now. Get extra battery and the 1 gig SD chip. Gives 8,400 pixs on lowest res. Suggest you buy any R, (not M) series. New R817 has 5X optical zoom, 40X total.

  2. This is my first digital camera. I've always had good experiences with HP products, and this camera is yet another one to add to my list. I love that it has both optical AND digital zoom features. Secondly, it's quite handy and tiny that you can fit it in an average pants, coat or even shirt pocket. Finally, the warranty is simply amazing. This past new year's eve, during the fireworks and festivities downtown, I slipped the device into my pocket along with the car keys. The car keys punctured the quick-view window, BUT HP kindly replaced it with a brand new camera! Yes, the warranties don't last long, but it certainly offers great coverage in the meantime. If you are a first-time or amateur digital photographer, you will have tons of fun with this camera. It's really fun to use and at a reasonable price.

  3. Bought an HP Photosmart R717 in the summer of 2005 for $324.74. 4 months after the camera warranty was up and after minimal usage the camera was displaying: 0000000F-10FB-1BD-024 Error Message, on the display screen.

When I called HP about getting my camera repaired I was told that it would be too expensive to repair. I was informed it would cost around $200.00 dollars to receive most likely a refurbished replacement camera, with only a 3-month warranty.

After trying the replacement camera for 15 days I was then to send my old camera back as partial payment for the replacement camera.

I told HP no thanks, because they had already gotten enough money from me.

  4. I would not recommend any HP camera. This camera was an upgrade from one that broke down a month after the warranty was up, and that one was an upgrade from one that broke 2 months after the warranty was up. I'm not getting another! None of the 3 HP cameras I had could be repaired. The only option I was offered was to upgrade. For the upgrade I sent my old camera back and paid slighly less that I would if I bought a new one. They sent me a "new" camera. It was a refurbished camera, not new. None of the damage on any of my 3 cameras was through carelessness or misuse. The first 2 cameras gave me error messages and shut off. I was told this was an internal problem that could not be fixed. On the third camera the screen went blank. It can't be fixed. I'm going to do a lot of research before buying my next camera, but one thing I'm sure of - it won't be an HP!

  1. This camera is very tuff in a good way. Its taken lots of hits and spills and 3 drops NOT FROM ME. I'v taken it on 3 trips it's done well intill my friend droped it on a root it still works but the sliding door broke it's a very very good camera.(the screen didn't brake at all!)

  2. I think one of the major things I disliked about the camera was its speed. When there is something important going on that I want to snap a quick photo of, it takes 10 seconds for the flash to load. Also, it eats through double A's. It is a relativly good camera for just like little still shots of your dog.

  3. Used this camera for 2 months and it quit working. Don't bother calling HP they don't care.

  4. Fortunately this camera was a prize... not a penny wasted on it
I do not believe hot today can be sold a camera with fixed focus (maybe you think that with no focusing, your picture is taken just when you push the button - but that is not the case of this camera, that takes somewhat a second to shoot, even with no flash!!!), a sensor that seems to need a whole sun of ligth to produce a non grainy picture, an interface that because of it lack of buttons requires a lot of navigation even for simple and common adjusts. Not to mention its hungry of batteries, even alkaline or good NiMH ... is hp making batteries??? seems that they want to make money on bunchs of batteries sold to camera owners.
Please stay away of this camera, unless you want to have something that deserves your angry and a your hammer!
    Pros: Lens cover.
Cons: Too many for this space!

  5. After reading through a lot of the reviews here I have to chime in. I have owned this model now for 2 years, having said that I have taken hundreds of pictures with it, many of these were very good and will be cherished. This is a great little camera for still photo's, let me repeat STILL photo's. It does a fantastic job of it, if you want to take photo's quickly (as in turn on and take a pic) forget it, it takes as long to turn on as Martha Stuart on dirty sheets. The flash recharge time isn't good so if you plan on taking several pics indoors in short order... forget it.
As I have put here it looks like a mixed bag of feelings, on the one hand I have kept it and used it for hundreds of photo's, on the other I have missed/deleted hundreds because of the slightest movement on my part or the slightest movement of the object. I'm a patient man but I have steadily grown to hate this camera over 2 years. I have always had a higher priority than buying a new camera. As I get older I would rather not put up with some things and this is one I chose to put up with no longer.

I hope this helps someone see it for what it is, fantastic for shooting stills, yet terrible for all around use. And please these cameras are horrific with standard batteries, use energizer e2 lithium you will see an difference beyond belief in the number of pics you can take (and they are lighter). IMHO

  1. Duration of ownership: 2 months

Strengths: 7MP point-and-shoot camera with a 3X zoom. Easy-to-use built-in help screens. Nice looking and strong brushed-aluminum body.

Weaknesses: No viewfinder. Limited choice of settings

Overall Evaluation: A feature of this M627 that I liked is that the camera allows the users to quickly and easily add creative effects and borders to their photos right on the camera using the HP Design Gallery; I can can choose up to 10 different borders, including burnt, soft or torn edges, 12 different artistic effects, such as kaleidoscope, retro and slimming, and four unique color tints. The HP Photosmart Express feature is also nice; it makes makes sharing, printing and saving digital photos easy. The drawback of the camera that I found was the lack of sharpness and color accuracy when taking pictures in night time.

  2. Excellent service. Super camera. Prompt. Fantastic price!! Couldn't be happier!!

  3. I purchased this camera for my daughter who is in college for Christmas. She LOVES it. The large view screen on the back is more awesome than she expected. No second quessing at what the photo will look like. She searched for just the right memory card and found a 1 gig SD card and she can now store many, many photos. The only drawback that she noticed was that the night time pictures seemed to come out slightly blurry, like as if the shutter speed may be not set "just right" for the time it is taking for the night shots. She said she would definitely recommend this camera to anyone.

  4. My main digi cam is a Panasonic FZ20 which is alot bigger then this hp, so I wanted something that I could carry easily with me and stil provide quality pics. Well, along came the m627 and I am very pleased and happy with it. I was hesitante being that it is a hp digi cam, but I read on it and said what the heck. (It was only 50 or less that I paid for it, cant recall) I love the large lcd, very easy and simple to use which is what I want in a small portable cam. takes great pics, which I was surprised about. the only draw back, it only has 3x optical zoom but thats why I have the FZ20 with 12x optical.

one thing though, not all HP cams will be as good as this one or better then this one. I was looking to buying a hp one for my mom for mothers day, a newer model but the pics the demo model was taking were CRAP compared to this model.

so, def read and try to get your hands on it before making a purchase.

  1. This was my first camera I've owned and I wanted one to take pictures of my friends at school as well as scenery. Due to the camera's compact size I can carry with me everywhere I go. It has many options but I usually keep it on auto and I get great results. The main standout point for me was the HP Adaptive Light Tech. feature. It is made to bring faces out of shadows and details out of backgrounds which makes the picture look 100 times better. I put one of my images of Lake Dixon in the customer images section if you want to see just how good these pictures turn out. If your thinking of buying a camera at a reasonable price, one you can take anywhere, and still take great pictures, this is the camera for you! I love it!

  2. We got this camera as a gift. We have gone round and round with HP tech support and still have not managed to install the camera software into our computer. (We own other brands of digital cameras, all installed without a hitch.)

First of all, the HP software is 170 Mega-bytes large. Talk about bloat-ware! Why does it take such a huge program to manage a camera?

Secondly, HP knows about the software problem. A "fix" is posted on HP.com. After downloading all 170MB of it, it still failed to install. We contacted HP tech support through chat sessions, their suggestions all failed. HP send us an upgraded CD, it still halts on an error during install.

Lest you think we have a weird, off-brand computer, this is an HP Pavilion ZE4125 laptop.

It has been a thoroughly frustrating and disappointing experience.

  3. I had a Pentax Optio 4 MP camera that I LOVED. Unfortunately I was careless and dropped it in water. In searching for a replacement, I saw that this camera was considered to be just as good and it was considerably cheaper. I figured since I was going to be careless with my camerea maybe I should buy the cheaper one, especially if it was supposed to be as good. What a MISTAKE. First off, this camera is a little bit bigger both in depth and width than the Optio. It just doesn't have the same sleekness. Secondly, the picture quality is definitely not as good. Every other picture I take is out of focus. I just want a simple point and shoot camera, one that can focus without having to mess with things...this isn't doing the trick. Now its been doing this weird thing where every picture I take has lines running through it (looks almost like the picture is ribbed). Its VERY annoying. I have such buyers remorse. I really wish I hadn't have tried to save money and had just bought the Optio. There's nothing positive I can say about this camera.

  4. I've had this camera for almost two years, despite what others have said I've found it a somewhat tough camera physically.

    Ok now to the long list of problems;

It has horrible motion capture, pictures often come out with a mild funhouse mirror warp effect, is utterly worthless in less than direct-sunlight and finally its far far to reliant on its flash. Also having to reset everything everytime you turn it on is a major annoyance. I've taken many pictures with it on many trips reaffirming its faults and still, If not for being a receipt-less present I would have returned it long ago.

  5. I bought this camera more than three years ago and have been using it ever since. I'm not the kind of person that takes pictures all the time, but enjoy taking pictures during trips and family/friends reunions. What decided me to buy the R607 were its low price (very cheap in comparison with similar cameras at the time) and my previous experience with HP products (I own a HP desktop, a HP laptop, a HP PDA...).

Regarding to this camera, it takes excellent pictures. I love the panorama function for taking landscape photos. 4MP is more than enough for a non-professional photographer. It has a lot of functions that I didn't use too often, but many could find useful. It can fit a cheap, very compatible SD memory card to improve its capacity.

Nevertheless, it has some downsides. First of all, the LCD display is quite small. You can get used to it, but since newer cameras come with larger displays, you can be tempted to go that way instead. The software has given me some headaches lately, but I suspect I could fix the bugs reinstalling it from the beginning. And the battery endurance has started to show some shortfall, but I think its normal after 3+ years of continued use.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the camera's performance. Now its time for me to buy a new one, and I'll stick to HP for that.

  1. You can literally take 8 shots and the camera is dead. I've missed so many photo opps. Definitely NOT worth buying.

  2. This was my first digital camera and it's because of this camera that I stuck with HP when upgrading. It's a very good point and shoot camera with enough modes and settings to satisfy those who like fiddling with such things.

Many of the reviews here complain about battery life. Turn off the live display, you don't need it anyway since the viewfinder is accurate. I never got *fewer* than 60 pictures (sometimes more) in two star mode with the live display off, on a pair of 1800 mAh rechargeables. I also had a big difference when I changed the auto shutoff to a shorter time period.

Also, yes, you need a memory card -- but what digital camera doesn't? I had a 64 MB card with mine and only once completely used the card up.

Shutter speed is a little slower than average for the class but fine for everything except action shots. Lens glass is by Pentax and is good quality. No, you won't get digital SLR quality from this camera, but at <$140 it's a great deal.

  3. I have owned my hp photosmart 735 for about 3 or 4 years and have never once had a problem with it. It was a dependendable and consistant camera. My friends have many other types and have had to go through repairs and problems but not me. Everything that this camera says it does, it does. I have never had to worry about it quiting on me.
So in my opinon if you are looking for a dependable camera, this I would defintly label as one of them.

  4. this cam was great when untill the flash didnt work! i went online for support but after talking to them, they said it was a internal malfunction or something like that but by then the warrantee already expired so im stuck with a flashless camera. Ive miss many special moments due to no flash. and its really hard taking pictures with no flash and no tripod.

But overall good camera! batteries seems as though they die quick but like i turn it off for like a few hours then the batteries came back to full power again. The video mode is pretty good....i also recommend using the power adapter when possible! that way you can turn the camera on as long as you want without worrying about the batteries dieing out!The printer is a really great printer as well!...but sadly i cant live any longer with a flashless camera so im going to sell this up or just give it to my brother or something and saving up for a Fuji Finepix s5100...Good luck!

  5. I have owned this camera for almost 3 years now, and it is the sturdiest and most reliable one that I have had. Once, I dropped it from 5 feet onto a sidewalk and it didn't even get a scratch. The outdoor picture quality is excellent, as well as the macro mode, but if you have shaky hands (like me), you will have a ton of blurry pics. The screen just can't compete with new cameras, being too small and dim to see outdoors. The flash is weak, but if you know how to use aperture and ISO settings, indoor shots will turn out pretty good. Personally, I think buyers would be better off buying one of HP's new R-series cameras (R717, R817, etc). While this camera is cheap and pretty reliable, the newer models have much more features and are still around $200-$300.
