  1. Thouroughly enjoyed this camera and was comfortable using all the features. The zoom was phenomenal. I had no real complaints about the camera until on a trip in Europe the camera just stopped working.

I did some reading first online to see if others had encountered the same malfunction, but found a multitude of other issues people were trying to solve. Some of these included error messages, blank LCD screens, etc. My particular problem is that the lens fails to extend, the shutter will not open, the only thing the camera will allow you to do is review previous images saved/stored on the SD memory card. It cannot take any additional photos, and yes new, fresh batteries were installed twice!

I think it's bizzare this camera just died within such a short time despite other cameras of lesser quality and durability continue to operate.

If anyone has some solution to the problem. Please don't hesitate to contact me through Amazon.

    Thanks

  2. We have had this camera for a year now LOVE IT!!! We are actually getting ready to purchase a second for personal use due to the first one becomeing used mostly for unexpected business. My wife bought this camera having 2 Konica Minoltas in the past and wanting to upgrade(our friends love the hand me downs) :). It is perfect for everything, our boys are in every sport imaginable and we have yet to see one that is a problem getting awsome pictures, even when I'm not always in sports mode. We haven't even sat down and learned how to use all of the settings and still very impressed. We also raise a dogs and so taking high quality pictures to advertise is important. Now after people have seen my Wife's pictures we've have sold most of our dogs due to the amount of puppy pictures that she is taking for others in my area. She thought kids were hard, WOW can puppies move! Once again the Z6 delivers A+ pictures everytime!

  3. I purchased this on impulse from a ritz after checking out its zoom power. Later read about its being the in-between of point and shoot and professional. It suited me fine as I have always been interested in learning about photography.
This camera has served me well in the 3 years I have owned it. People here have complained about its battery life. I solved my problem by having two sets of re-chargeable batteries. Another problem is that the colors dont come out all that lively but a free tool like picassa helped me out on that one. I realized how to work around poor focus in low light conditions - just developing good judgement of when you will be challenging it and try to finish taking your snaps before its too dark.
I tried out various manual modes and was excited to see the outcome even when I took pictures in very dark conditions (however it requires pretty still conditions). In my opinion the flash just ruins the photo by its uneven spread of light and I use it only when facing a light source
I have recently been to the Albany tulips show and I got some really beautiful pictures there. I even got my baby daughter's passport picture done using this even after everyone sternly warned me it might be rejected (they were amazed at its quality later - it had to happen, as I used the continuous shot feature to get just the right shots I needed out of several dozen)
However do check out if you can get a better deal for the price. At this time Amazon price is an unbelievable $599. I paid around $300 at the ritz 3 years back.

  4. Takes great pictures, easy to use, the different modes make this camera great for any setting. I use this for taking pics of everything, from high speed cars to flowers. Downloading is easy with the included software. Also, just to mention, I use regular AA batteries and they seem to last a long time. I used this camera for a 3 day car show, took hundreds of pics, downloaded and still had battery life left.
    I Highly Recommend this Camera !! AA++

  5. I purchased this camera in October 2005, and have not been disappointed in any feature in the 2 1/2 years since. It takes amazing pictures, and all I do is point and shoot on the auto setting. I set it to the finest quality and largest file size, and can crop a small section out of a shot and then print out great quality prints in 11 X 14 (probably larger, but that's as large as I have done). I frequently have to argue with the employees at the photo departments that I am not illegally duplicating professional, copy-righted pictures! I love this camera, and highly recommed it!

  1. This camera replaces a wonderful but bulky Cannon 4MP. While on a trip to Japan, I realized I should've packed my little brick of a camera. I decided to go price some of the cameras there, expecting their usually expensive prices. I found this one for $170 (a favorable Yen rate helped). I bought it, and the clerk was nice enough to change the menu language to English. The book, however, is in Japanese. I set out to get some shots, day and night. The instant preview was useful since I was able to adjust settings and retake to see the difference (you can zoom on the preview screen). I had a 1 gig SD card in my PDA which is now in the camera. At first it did not read it, but after a couple of format trial and errors, I got it to work perfectly. At the highest setting, and taking some movies, it proved to be enough for lots of pictures. I'm grateful for the reviewers who mentioned the ISO setting recommendation: I'll try that. I found the controls and menus sufficent for taking great pictures without the benefit of the manual. I will download the english version at the earliest opportunity, though. Don't you just love the internet?????
Highly recommeneded for those who take the time to adjust settings and check out the preview shots.

  2. The camera I bought, well it was a Christmas gift for my daughter, her previous camera was stolen, so I replaced it. Thank you for getting me the gift right away and ready for Christmas.

She is very pleased with the camera and so am I.

  3. Hi, when I ordered this Minolta Digital Camera I picked a seller that was offering the best price for the camera I wanted. What was missing was the information that I was buying a camera without a card. I would have been happy to purchase a separate memory card, if that information has been stated in the listing. But, I was surprised to find all the pieces of the camera, cradle, cords, and battery in the box but no card. When I contacted the seller, they informed me that the camera was being offered without a memory card. Somehow I missed that information when I placed my order.

Since then I have purchased a camera 2.0 G memory card, on sale at Circuit City for a huge reduction in price. So it all worked out for the best.
I guess what I would like to see Amazon do about these kinds of ads, is make sure that if something is being offered for sale that all of its parts are listed, or if something is not included, there should be a note to that effect in the ad.

No one does it better than Amazon. I have been able to find things on your website when no one else could come up with it. I love Amazon you are AMAZING,com

  4. I got this camera as a present a year ago, and dropped it in the ocean when I was on vacation...:( I bought an other camera, but the picture quality didn't live up to the standards set by the Dimage X1. So, I did a lot a research trying to find the Dimage X1 again. This is the most amazing camera ever -- to bad it's not in production any more. Picture quality is great. The anti-shake feature help to take the most amazing pictures. By far THE best digital camera I've owned.

  5. Okay, I'd purchased this camera TWO years ago, and I'm still thrown by it's picture quality! Majority of my friends own Sony digital cameras, yet it doesn't come close to Konica Minolta Dimage X1! I constantly get compliments on my photo's, often everyone would ask if it's a professional DSLR camera that I'm using to get such wonderful quality! Though, I honestly have to agree that the shutter speed is one of the main disadvantages, along with some of the features and especially the bulky size & weight. Overall, I've been extremely happy with this product regardless of other's opinion, and I'm actually afraid of replacing it now that I'm so attached!!! Picture quality is stunning after TWO years!

  1. This is the easiest to use digital camera I have ever seen. It has the ability to take movies, and even has different modes (auto, sports, macro, low-light, and ZOOM)... all without making it complicated. That's why this camera is good for beginners and experienced users alike (enough options for many of us, but easy for the novices). It has a 1.8inch viewable LCD. I've found that the cams with bigger screens used up batteries to fast, and those with smaller screens just weren't big enough to see. This camera has INTERNAL MEMORY. A big plus because many digital cameras only rely on memory cards. Also, you have the option of using SD memory cards if you want. They're cheaper than SONY memory stick, more compact that Compact Flash cards, and are so versitile because it's the same size that fits into PDA's such as palm-pilots. This makes it especially handy. The flash is easy to use on this camera and isn't overpowerful like my last camera. It's bright enough without drowning out the image with white flash.

Only drawback is that the Dock is usually sold seperately. I suggest you buy it bundled with the Dock (charges batteries) to save serious $$ on batteries. You can also always use regular AA batteries in a pinch.

  2. I LOVE THIS CAMERA! I bought it just over 3 yrs ago after my youngest son was born. It is so easy to use, so much it can do. I did have 1 digital camera before this and to download the pictures I would spend a frustrating 30 minutes every time to get my computer to 'see' it. My husband doesn't like 'complicated' electronics but he will use this. Much to my joy I receive e-mailed pictures from him every couple of weeks (I am currently deployed to Iraq). Since being here a few other people have been interested in buying a digital camera and I HIGHLY recommended a Kodak Easyshare. I actually wish Kodak would start making digital video cameras. This is the next step for video and I would defiantly by one...

  3. I had some initial problems with the camera after purchase, and had to return it to Kodak twice for repairs. But since then it has worked fine. I enjoy the Kodak picture program that came with the camera, although it does not offer all the possibilities of the Adobe Photo House program. Camera is convenient and easy to use, and I'm sure it is capable of doing much more than I have discovered to this point.

  4. When it come to ease of use price and phot quality this camera is it.

  5. The camera is easy to use and the quality of the pictures is very good. Getting the pictures out of the camera and into your computer is another matter. The software is very un-intuitive, lots of "albums" and "gallerys" but all we wanted to do is get the photos into the PC. The "Help" file is not much help and Kodak's webpage essentially says to read the manual. Now I know why Kodak is going down the tubes.

  1. I do not recommend this camera at all.

    1. Charging the battery takes forever (at least a few hours) -- forget about his last-minute charging for a special event!
    2. This camera is also not good at compensating the normal miniscule jitter from a human stationary hand when the person who is taking the picture is in motion (even in steady motion -- such as in a vehicle moving on a smooth surface).
    3. Exactly a year after I bought it (barely a month after the 1 year warranty was up), it broke. When I turn the camera on, it displays a message "Access" on the screen, the screen does not display the image in view of the camera and I cannot take pictures. The turn on and turn off also do not work properly -- the lens goes in and out randomly, inconsistent with what I am trying to achieve (turn the camera on or turn the camera off).

This time I am buying some cheap Chinese camera that will, probably, last longer!

I am usually not a conspiracy theorist but stuff like this really makes one wonder if these cameras are not programmed to break right after the warranty is up...

  2. Since, I myself rely on customer reviews before I make a purchase, I figured I should also leave one as well... Well, first off if I had looked at these reviews before this purchase (my husband surprised me with this camera) I might not have bought this one. So here goes:
My first sony cypershot was a dsc-p92 5 mega pixels and in all fairness I guess it was a "good" camera at the time.. I've had that one for a very long time, problems arose so much with that camera, such as dead batteries (used AA's) within an 1/2 hour of placing new ones,, but I am getting off subject.
The sony cypershot dsc-w70 camera is GREAT. well mostly anyway.. I have had this camera for about a year, so I have had lots of uses for it.
    PROS:
---LCD screen is a good 2 inches. great size!
---small enough to fit in a pocket.
---lithium battery is way better than those AA's
    ---quick to turn on
---quick time between first picture taken and next
---great pictures in any light. I have taken pictures in a very dim lit room late at nite and pictues came out great. Don't understand how others are having such a big difference in their pictures.
---does take great action pictures.. My daughter and her friends, do a jump and flip with their skateboards mid-air and this camera has stopped the action in its tracks without it being the least bit blurry, and that's with a bunch of 13 yr olds taken them
-----I have taken many pictures while driving and they too come out without a problem. What I have found that works great is to push the shutter button halfway down then take the picture. Not one bad picture while in a moving car since then.
----video playback works very well, microphone works decent enough that you don't have to be right on top of who you are recording. Though if you talk it will pick that up. Records concerts, plays, anything your kids or whoever might be performing.
----Battery lasts a long time before a charge, videotaped approx 1 1/2 hrs of a concert(non-stop) and didnt even go to a half charge (while using the lcd)
---Has been dropped by my daughter and has not been damaged or scratched at all.
---Easy to set up to download pictures and such into your computer, but with just one cord hooks up to your tv to view pictures there..(my other sony this was not an option just the computer you could view)
---Has a viewfinder! So many digital cameras out there now no longer offer a viewfinder, which most of us probally don't use, but if your batteries are getting low turn off the lcd and that battery will last longer

    CONS:
---If you want to videotape, you must remember to zoom if you choose BEFORE you start to record, because you cannot do it once you start.
---The spot where they put the dial for the different types of settings tends to get moved around when you remove camera from either your purse, camera bag or pocket, so be sure to check setting before taking that picture.
---Twilight setting is not good at all unless you have a tripod. camera takes way to long to take picture and if you move even the slightest the picture will be very very blurry. you would be better off using the auto setting and hoping for the best. which pictures do come out just fine IF subject is close to you, far away it would be black, though it only has a small flash built in and is not a 1,000 dollar camera.

All in all, I am very glad my husband just happened to pick out this camera. Extremly happy with the camera and am not even thinking about getting a new one yet. (Knock wood) LOL
Are there better cameras out there?? Most likely, but there are worse ones also. The price was right and the performance for me has been great!

    Hope this has helped.

  3. I received this camera as a gift. It looks nice and took fine enough pictures, but after about 1 year, the navigational buttons went haywire. If I press up, the menu scrolls left, right and it goes up. Its barely usable anymore and every setting is stuck on the "multi-shot" feature. Sometimes I can rig it to work, bit I don't think a $300+ camera should have to be "rigged" to do what it was made to do. I, too, called customer service and received the same "flat-rate" repair fee of $180.00. I laughed and told the customer service rep that was ridiculous. I am sure I can find this, or another usable cameram elsewhere for that price. And I won't have to wait months for its return. If you do buy this camera, maybe spring for the extended warranty and ask what it specifically covers, just in case.

  4. I bought this camera a year ago for Christmas. I thought the picture quality was really good, however, it started having problems with the shutter not long after i bought it. I took really good care of it, until i dropped it once. The lens would no longer come completely out, so it would no longer focus for pictures. I took it apart, but it's not even worth getting fixed. I plan on getting a new cybershot so i can keep the battery and memory card, but i'm hoping another model will be better, especially considering the w80 and w90 cost less.

  5. Had camera for a brief time, lcd broke while in the carrying case without any kinda of dropping or stress, then even though we had bought the "Full Coverage" insurance, they would not fix or have anything to do with it.

2 comments about Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Silver).
  1. If you want more bang for your buck, get the Canon EOS Rebel XSi instead of the Rebel XS. The XS is the "little brother" of the XSi which means they are both almost the same camera, but the XSi has more to offer than the XS. At the time of this writing, Amazon.com is currently selling the XSi for the same price as the XS! You would be foolish to buy the XS now instead of the XSi, especially on the fact that the XSi was released not long ago in April 2008. In other words, you have two very similar models that were both released in 2008, just four months apart, but yet the XSi has more capabilities and features than the XS and costs the same. The XS is just a trimmed-down version of the XSi.

Here are the notable similarities of the Rebel XSi and the Rebel XS:
    * Both have practically the same large single-plate CMOS sensor and the Digic III Image Processor, except the XSi is 12.2MP while the XS is only 10.1MP (megapixels).
    * Both have the Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System.
    * Both can be purchased with the same EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Kit Lens. If you buy the XSi camera body only, it's even cheaper than the XS with kit lens.
    * Both have Live View Function with their LCD displays.
    * Both are compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses.
    * Both utilize SD and SDHC memory cards.
    * Both use the same battery pack (LP-E5) and the same optional battery grip (BG-E5).
    * The XS is compatible with most of the Canon EOS camera system accessories that can be used with the XSi.

Now here are the differences between the "newer" Rebel XS and the recently released Rebel XSi:
    * The XSi has more megapixels at 12.2MP while the XS is 10.1MP.
    * The XSi can continuously shoot at 3.5 fps while the XS can do 3.0 fps.
    * The LCD monitor of the XSi measures 3.0 inches while the XS has a smaller screen at 2.5 inches.
    * The XSi has a 9-point AF system while the XS has only a 7-point.
    * The XSi has Spot metering while the XS does not. Both have Evaluative, Partial, and Center-weighted metering, however.
    * XSi's RAW is 14-bit while the XS RAW is 12-bit.
    * XSi has Highlight Tone Priority while the XS does not.
    * The viewfinder of the XSi provides 0.87x magnification while the XS provides 0.81x.
    * The XSi can utilize the RC-1 or the RC-5 wireless remote shutter release, but the XS is not compatible with either so you won't be able to use a wireless remote release.

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi clearly is the better choice and if you are buying your very first digital SLR camera, the XSi is a top model for entry-level compared to others currently out on the market. With the XSi and the XS being sold at the same price, why would you go for something that has less to offer?

    * August 19, 2008 UPDATE: Amazon.com has lowered the price of the XS, which makes it somewhat cheaper than the XSi as of this update, but I still strongly feel that the XSi is a better value. Do know that the price of the XSi has dropped significantly throughout Summer 2008, so I'll bet that the XSi and the XS models will have a price war as time goes on.

  2. We are now seeing a real first...the first Digital EOS that hasn't got people flocking to the stores. Why? Price, and a lack of anything "innovative". However, on the good front, speaking with a Canon Sales Rep, he has told me to expect the gap between the XSi and XS to quickly go to $200, which is a more realistic valuation, and would probably warranty another star, as the XS is really a very nice camera.

You've probably seen many lists comparing the XS to the XSi, and noticed the shortcomings, which are too numerous for $100. However, compared to some of the competition, it's not all bad. Take as an example the Nikon D60. Both are 10mp, but the Canon is a CMOS sensor, that should produce a tad better photos in poor lighting conditions. You also get a 7-point AF system vs. 3-point.

Compared to the Sony Alpha 300, it's hard pay $100 premium, considering the Alpha has in camera stabalization, supports wireless flashes (with built-in flash) and has a 2.7" tiltable live-view. But the Canon kit lens is better optically, and the build quality appears to be slightly better on the XS. When the price drops, they'll be equally good values.

But as most people have said, the XSi is a 5-star camera worth $200 extra; therefore, the price of the XS needs to reflect that reality.
