  1. I have had this camera for a couple of weeks now and I think it is fantastic. Pictures are clear and sharp.

  2. This camera delivered a faster lag time and more zoom to get up close. It has more features then I am used to and so it will take me time to learn how to use them.

  3. Well worth the money, every penny. In General dose a great job.Any one taking Digital pictures it dose a wonderful all around job taking snap shots.
Sony did a good job on this one. I feel this is a must, and enjoy this camera.

    Ramboe

  4. I'm quite fond of the Sony megazoom series of cameras, and I recently upgraded from a Sony DSC-H1 to DSC-H50. I was actually still quite happy with the H1, more than 3 years after buying it, but a couple of features on the H50 made me invest in the new model:

    * The camera can be operated through a remote control. In addition to self-portraits, this is good for leaving your camera somewhere on its own, pointing to a place you think an interesting animal, insect or something will appear, and then shoot. It's difficult to get close to animals and insects in person sometimes.

    * The camera has a screen on the back that can be tilted at various angles, making it good for taking photos from high above your head and conveniently also from ground level. I find this option often makes for creative photography!

Just a quick note on the "smile detector". It works beyond belief! I'm not sure how useful it actually is, but it's amazing how quickly the camera responds when the smile appears.

On the minus side, I would have preferred to be able to continue using normal AA batteries, like in the H1. While the proprietary Sony battery for this camera has impressive endurance, it is also expensive...

Another negative, although it may be that I just haven't learnt to operate the camera properly yet, is that until now I find that my macro photos when I go EXTREMELY close actually turns out better/more detailed/cleaner on the H1 than with the H50. It's still good, though.

I remain satisfied with the Sony megazoom cameras!

  5. 2nd one i had,--great idea--,3" screen,tiltable,82/1 zoom with vga, batt life, remote control, response time, color, just could not get a real sharp pic 50% of the time

5 comments about Canon PowerShot SD1000 7.1MP Digital Elph Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Silver).
  1. I purchased this camera based on the positive reviews it and other similar Canons have received on this and many other websites, and because I have several friends who own either an SD1000 or SD750. We also use the SD750 at my office for structural inspections and it's a great camera. It's been several years since I've purchased a camera - our old Sony Cybershot has been a very good one, but at 3.2MP it's not going to cut it anymore. When it comes to electronics, I've always been a Sony person in the past, so I was a little skeptical at first. But the reviews don't lie, and this camera has lived up to it's good name thus far.

I'm not a photographer. I just want to be able to pick up a camera and take quality pictures of my family whenever it's convenient, and the SD1000 has been a great purchase. I had a hard time deciding between the SD750 and SD1000 - it looks like the only difference is the size of the LCD screen (the 750 has a 3" screen but no viewfinder, and is slightly larger overall)- but I went with the 1000 because I wanted a viewfinder. Our last camera's LCD screen cracked in the middle of a Disney World trip, but we were still able to take photos by looking through the viewfinder.

Overall, I highly reccomend this camera for anyone who wants to take great photos without a lot of fuss.

  2. This is my third digital camera and by far the most compact and easiest to use of all my previous cameras -- including the point and shoot box cameras of my youth as well as more advanced SLR cameras with interchangeable lenses and the two earlier digital cameras. The instructions are detailed but understandable It actually does fit in a shirt pocket since it is no bigger than a deck of playing cards. I particularly like its battery pack with supplied charger.

  3. I recently purchased this camera after I dropped my other one and bent/broke the lense while extended. I'm a wildland firefighter and this thing lives in my pocket 24/7 while on fires. So it gets it's fair share of abuse and it takes it. I bought an Otter Box and with a small amount of added padding it protects it very well while not adding too much bulk. It takes great pictures for my intended purpose.

  4. It's with me every where I go. Incredibly useful and great for capturing life's unexpected moments. It's by no means going to live up to more professional cameras, but as far as getting shots of my friends at a party or a great view is concerned it's tops.

Always with me in my bag or back pocket. Easy to navigate options as far as exposure/pixels/focus are concerned.

The only thing this camera isn't going to do for you is take super super detailed shots. If you're just looking for something to capture moments and great views, but don't want to worry about lugging around a huge item you're worried about breaking this is an amazing buy.

  5. Nice Camera with nice quality photos. I would suggest getting some sort of screen protector... Its worth the few dollars to prevent scratches. There is also a way that you can add software and added features to the camera. I would suggest this product to anyone.

  1. I previously owned the Canon Digital Rebel. I primarily upgraded to this camera for the additional pixels. Just in pixels alone, I effectively doubled my zoom rate, and it shows in bird closeups I've taken. Compared to my last camera, it's like trading in my 70-300 zoom on a 70-600 zoom. And picture quality is phenomenal, even when compared to the original Digital Rebel.

But the other enhancements to this camera make it worth buying even if it didn't sport a higher density CCD. I purchased an extra battery because the battery on the original Rebel ran down way too quickly and left me without a usable camera a few times. But I didn't need to. The battery on this model lasts forever. Maybe 10 times longer than the original!

This weekend I went on a bike ride with some friends. I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago and forgot to recharge the battery. I brought the extra along, but wanted to see how long the battery would last. I took a lot of pictures, then a friend of mine wanted to check out an image-stabilization lens I have. He spent an hour playing with the thing, taking more pictures and wasting battery power by testing out the image stabilization feature (something that normally uses a lot of juice). The battery still hasn't run down. I can't emphasize enough how bottomless the battery seems to me.

Having image-stabilization on the short lens was a nice feature. I didn't really need it because I use the zoom lens almost exclusively, but it's nice to know the feature's there if I ever do.

Focus with my 70-300 zoom lens is much faster as well. Where the old one took up to a second or so, the new one focuses instantly when there's enough light. Even when there isn't enough light for a fast focus, it's still many times faster than the original.

Something else that surprised and excited me: Using the Sport mode, I used to be able to take only 4 pictures in succession before the buffer filled up. With the new camera in the same mode, I can take a lot more pictures in the same amount of time. Instead of only 4 pictures before the buffer is filled, the shutter keeps clicking away forever. I can't imagine any action shot that will be too long for the amount of pictures this thing can take now. I was showing the camera off to my brother-in-law, and I took at least 20 pictures (maybe 30 or 40?) in rapid succession before the buffer became full and it slowed down.

This camera is truly awesome. The friend that was demoing it was trying to justify his previous purchase of a non-SLR. He said, "So this is more of a professional camera, huh?" I told him, "No--this is Canon's amateur line." And it is. But right now, I think it's better than their professional camera, which actually has 2 Megabits fewer pixels.

In the "easy" modes, the camera is a better photographer than I am. I'm no pro. But it would be nice to be able to choose when the flash is appropriate, or force a fill-flash when I want to.

Other bennies: The screen is larger and brighter, but you can lower its brightness to improve battery life (I keep it cranked up all the way--this thing has plenty of battery life as I've said).

Canon advertises that this thing will let you preview on the LCD now while focusing. If you want to buy this camera just because it's the only SLR you know of with that feature, don't. You might play with it for a couple of minutes, but you'll never use it to take actual pictures, because focus either doesn't work, or is excruciatingly slow. I had a lot of trouble figuring out how to turn this on, as well, and had to consult the manual.

There is another ease-of-use item I'd like to mention. You can turn off the flash in the easy modes if you want to. But you have to be in a creative mode to do it. I did that once, and it took me a long time to figure out how to turn the flash back on, because there's no menu item for it in the mode I was in (which was full-auto). I think it's idiotic that you can turn off the flash mode in full-auto from a creative mode, but not from the mode you're using.

All in all, I'm very glad I bought this camera.

  2. This might be a quality control issue but about 50% of my shots are out of focus. I have used a 350D for years and was planning to upgrade to 12 MP - but I am very disappointed. I am always using center point autofocus and have used several different lenses - Canon's 50mm/f1.8, the Canon 17-85mm IS, Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 30mm/f1.4 - with all lenses there are focus issues in many many shots.
In addition, I can not attest to the low noise comments. I see lots of chroma noise even at ISO 400 which was never the case with my 8 MP 350D. This one is going back today - I guess Canon has serious quality control issues, though the noise issue can not be explained by that.

  3. I love this camera. I used to have an old Minolta XGM 35MM for many years and loved taking pictures so i decided to get back into photography and i waited for this ever since it was first announced by Canon. I got this and the 70-300 zoom and have been taking pictures everywhere. It takes fantastic pictures and make me look like a professional photographer. Now everyone I know, wants me to take pictures for them. The transaction was easy and happily uneventful. I received it on time and in fine condition. I received it from Ritz/Amazon. I am looking forward to taking classes so I can benefit from all the great features. I would highly recommend this if you have the dough!

  4. I owned the XTi before and was extremely satisfied with it. I'm sold to the XSi mainly because of the new Spot metering and 3" screen!! Live View is a plus but I only used it a couple of times.
People always compare the XSi to the 40D. Price w/ feature wise their prices are pretty much the same, but the main reason that I chose the XSi was the SMALL SIZE. For people with small hands like me the 40D is too wide and heavy. On the 40D I couldn't reach some of the inner buttons without taken my hand away from the grip.
The IS kit lens is an excellent start but the camera quickly out grown its resolution. I upgraded to a EF-S 17-55mm IS and am very happy (make sure to get a good dust-resistant copy).

  5. I ordered this camera body, a lens hood and a memory card from Amazon. I received everything in perfect condition, with no problems and on time. I was able to track each item online and the camera and memory card arrived a week ahead of schedule (even using the free, but slow, free delivery) and the hood arrived right on the scheduled day. Also, Amazon had the best prices, no sales tax and free delivery. You can save more than a few bucks if you're willing to wait a few days.

  1. This was the perfect father's day gift. Take it on the boat deep sea fishing if it gets splashed with salt water or dropped on the deck, no worries. Take it to the pool with grandkids. Freezing conditions hunting, fishing, skiing, sledding. With 8.0 megapixels and 3x internal zoom didn't sacrifice quality of pics and capability either.

Easy to use! My Dad can't remember how to check voice mail on his cell phone but had no problem with the self explanatory icons and point and shoot technology. Later models like the 1030 only add technical advancement more megapixels more zoom etc.

Only one external moving part the shutter cover. Instructions actually say to submerge in fresh water to clean it before opening. Especially after being in sandy, salty other dirty debris environments.

One very durable, yet technically satisfying product!

  2. I love this camera. It takes really good pictures. Awesome for taking out on a friday night. The underwater feature is awesome. However, if you are looking for a better zoom feature this is not the camera for you.

  3. I bought this as my "field" camera while out hiking, trail running, X-Ctry skiing, etc when I don't feel like carrying our normal load of camera gear. It also goes with me when deployed and field exercises with the Army.

Other than dropping it, I have put it through its paces and it continues to take quality photos. The stabilization feature works well for photos in daylight but longer exposures have noticable shake. The pictures are crisp, telephoto is more than adequate and basic macro photo is possible with this camera. It is lightweight and slim enough to be a truly portable, go anywhere camera. It really is waterproof and produces very good (but not excellent) underwater shots. The quality of photos surpasses my expectations of a point and click digital and captures plenty of detail for memorable photos. For the price, I don't think there is a better camera on the market with these features.

The only point against this camera is the battery. It does not last long enough and if you put it in backwards or upside down it will get stuck and be nearly impossible to remove (see other reviews and their own manual). This is just poor engineering/design; a simple change in the shape of the battery would prevent this flaw.

  4. Overall great camera that is easy to use but takes great pictures in any condition!

  5. It's a great little camera. I use it for the quick grab shots of friends, family and activities and I purchased it for it's ability to be used in different environments. I had upgraded from the 720SW due to some additional features. It seems like I'm always on a river or around water. I like the Olympus cameras as they are easy to figure out and use. Results are good and the true test came when I went on a float trip down a river with a bunch of friends. We were all on inner-tubes which means no-one is holding still for a picture. I'm constantly moving and the subject is constantly in motion. I put it on the stabilizer setting and got a lot of sharp images.

I went river rafting down the Colorado River in May and used the 720sw and again the shots were absolutely great!
Both cameras got dunked under water on these trips so for me this is a great series of cameras.

  1. I got this camera for mostly one reason. Posting videos on Youtube. Although this camera is not good for videos. You have to buy a 8gb memory card just to hold around ten minutes of video. Which costs a lot of money. Plus the picture on the video is horrible. you have to stay completely still just to make out faces. The pictures are also blurry. If you want to use a camera for videos more then pictures then get the Canon PowerShot SD1000 7.1MP Digital Elph.

  2. I have never had something delivered so fast. I ordered it Sunday and received it Wednesday with the fee shipping. My boss already had the camera and suggested I purchase it. Hers was so nice and the price was reasonable. I could have purchased a cheaper camera but wanted style and great quality so I paid more and it still wasn't expensive. Great Deal. I love Amazon!

  3. The big LCD screen is the seller for someone like me who needs reading glasses. Since this is my first digital camera, I feel a steep learning curve. But both the basic & more comprehensive guides are helping me make use of the many features.

  4. This is a great little camera. I highly recommend it. I bought it to replace an older digital made by a different company. Wow! They have really come a long way in the technology of these little jewels. Unlike older models, it turns on instantly, has a mega-huge display in the back that is brilliant as far as its colors and brightness goes. And it takes really great pictures and video too! I've been very impressed with the features as well -- so many! Unless you are a professional photographer or a hard-core hobbyist, this is the perfect camera for you. If you just want something you can stick in your pocket, carry in a backpack or purse, and have ready in a moments notice to take great pics, buy this camera.

  5. it's compact for carry-on & LCD screen is large enough (at this point in time)to see pictures before printing them out. Also, the quality of pictures are impeccable! I just love it!

  1. I bought this camera after having an older Kodak 4 mega pixel. I was happy with my Kodak other than it being dropped too many times. This little camera is well worth the $130! It takes awesome photos and has video as well! We didnt realize this when we bought it, so it was a nice bonus for us! It seems easy to understand and view photos. I would get this one again! I used it to take my daughter's 5 yr. photo and am happier with them than when I took her to a prof. photographer!

  2. Love this camera!! I had a Polaroid before and could not get near the quality of picture that this PowerShot takes!!!
Also great valve with being just over $100!!!

  3. Purchased this camera for my 7-yr-old granddaughter and she was up and shooting with minimal instruction. Wonderful screen, easy to use, small enough to carry just about anywhere, but very good quality photos despite its conservative price.

  4. I love this camera. It's smaller. It's basic settings are very easy to use. As you become more familiar, the advanced settings are really fun to play with. I love all the settings: aquarium, snow, portrait, sunset, etc. I am very happy with this purchase.

We did a lot of comparison shopping, and just couldn't get over how perfect this camera was to our needs. I highly recommend this over any other.

  5. The Canon A470 has a great price and great features. I like it better than the older model I had, an A85. The older had only 4mp, and appeared to have many more controls. The A470 takes only 2 AA batts, vs the 4 batts for the A85. I need a SIMPLE camera. The features for the price are tops.

4 comments about Pentax Optio W60 Waterproof 10MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Ocean Blue).
  1. Because of serious spray I needed a waterproof camera with a wide angle lens for an August 11 trip to Niagara Falls ("Slowly I turned.."). I saw the Pentax Optio W60 on Amazon with an expected release date of August 5 so I was preparing to settle for the W30. Then, while surfing the site it came up as "in stock" on July 10. I immediately ordered it with Super Saver shipping and had it in my hands by noon on July 16. This was way faster than I had hoped for. I spent the next 11 hours studying it and the manual.

The manual is 240 pages, all in English, soI am not going to bore you with a list of features. You can see them for yourself on the Amazon and Pentax web sites. What I will say is that the pictures I took while learning the camera last night were excellent. If this camera does not meet all your needs in a point and shoot camera then its unlikely anything will. It definitely meets my needs. Its waterproof and shockproof and has a 5X zoom (28-140, 35mm equivalent) as well as 5.7X digital zoom and movie mode with zoom and sound.

My only suggestion, at this time, would be that the battery compartment door latch button could be a little more substantial. You will need an extra D-LI78 battery or its higher mah equivalent. The supplied battery is only 680mah.

I spoke with Paul at Pentax customer service. His recommendation was that there was no need to spend extra for class 4 or class 6 SD cards, class 2 cards would be fine. Because of built-in camera hardware limitations I would only gain minimal write speed with class 4 or 6 cards. I did as he suggested and the write speed is very fast with the class 2 (standard) Sandisk cards.

As a former photo retailer with over 20 years experience in camera sales I feel safe when I say "BUY THIS CAMERA!" You will not be disappointed.

  2. I just got this camera the other day. So far it seems like a good compromise camera. I kayak a lot, and I don't want to risk my digital slr when I'm out on salt water. I've hesitated a lot before buying a waterproof camera because their quality for the price has always seemed less. I finally bit the bullet on this camera because of the 5x optical zoom and the ability to take macro pictures from 1 cm away. Unlike the olympus underwater camera this takes SD cards - I couldn't see buying an xD card. This camera is capable of taking beautiful photos, the 1 cm macro is fun - shove my camera into a flower and see what I get.

    Negatives so far:
    - Lots of noise in low light, especially when zoomed in
    - I don't like that there's not a cover that closes over the lens when you turn off the camera. It means you should definitely have a dedicated case for it.
    - Optical image stabilization would have been a great addition to this camera.

I bought the kata snapshot D camera case for the camera and it fits well:

  3. I purchased the W60 primarily on the strength of it being a waterproof camera with 720p HD video. I have two Pentax DSLR's and generally like the brand.

The camera itself is pretty terrific, with a slew of features (face/smile detection, audio recorder, waterproof) that are nicely customizable. Still image quality is good, especially if you limit the Auto ISO to 50-400 to manage the noise. The camera is quick to focus, and the flash seems powerful enough. I've printed out a few of the images on a Canon Pro9000 printer and they look good.

Note, the HD video is 15 fps, which makes it stutter. It'll work in a pinch for HD filmmakers who always want an HD device in their pocket, but indoors, it can be grainy and has artifacts. If you actually want sound on your video, you MUST disable the AF, as it's always making a clicking noise while you're shooting. So, either you forget about having decent audio or you set the camera to manual, infinity or "pan" focus prior to hitting "record." I've tried that on "Infinity" and that works for me. To their credit, Pentax admits this sound issue a couple of times in the truly comprehensive manual.

I was briefly tempted to return the W60 on the basis of these video limitations and exchange it for the Lumix FZ5a, which has 30 fps 720p and a longer optical zoom.

However, the fact that this small camera is waterproof is just darn cool (particularly for those who like to kayak or hang out at the beach). There are few options otherwise (the Olympus, or carrying around a waterproof case), and the W60's feature set is otherwise great. So it really comes down to what compromises you're prepared to make. Frankly, I love the freedom to shoot underwater or in the rain with this camera. I'll live with the video limitations. It's a keeper!

  4. Just got this camera. Had it out in the pool all day. Great pictures, I highly recommend.

5 comments about Pentax K200D 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Shake Reduction 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens.
  1. I own a Pentax 35mm SLR and I invested in some great lenses for that camera. I wanted to move to a digital SLR and salvage my investment in K mount lenses.
I researched Pentax cameras that would give me this option, and chose the Pentax K200D.
I have found that the K200D is everything I wanted in a digital SLR. I would recommend it to anyone entering the digital SLR world.

  2. Have been experimenting with the camera since getting it back in early June. I did LOTS of research, wanting to get the most for my $$ in the "prosumer" range. Sure, it would be great to spend mucho $$ on a Nikon D300 but I have to put gas in the car too.
I would say that the positive reviews others have posted are accurate. The camera quality is excellent - its hard to put into words what it feels like, but it does feel more solid and well put together than others. The kit lens is surprisingly good as well. Very sharp and quick. I looked at others in this price range and while the Sony A300 had a cool LiveView feature, it felt "plasticky" and the reviews for the kit lens were usually horrible. After going to a Circuit City and playing with the Sony for awhile, I had doubts as to its potential longevity. The Canon's, Nikon's and Olympus' in this genre all cost more and were missing one or more key features.
Definitely put this camera/lens combo on your short list. Great build quality, nice lens for a great package price, plenty of accessories, compatibility with a ton of older lenses, wireless flash sync, shake reduction in body, weather resistant. Done! Now I'm thinking about a nice complimentary lens to go with the kit. 55-300 is looking nice...

  3. I have been a loyal Pentax customer for the better part of 25 years. My first was a fully manual K1000 from 1981. ( Which by the way is still a great film camera ) I used that camera to fill in the gap in-between great imaging, and quick imaging in which I use a "point and shoot" digital camera for my digital needs.
I have read reviews, and magazine ads waiting for a decent DSLR that can fill my all in one needs, and not fret about having hundreds of dollars of unused lenses, and filters in a case.
Well here it is! Though not really addressed in their ads at any length, The Pentax DSLR will indeed fit and use all their legasy K lenses!
NICE... all my zooms, wide angle, macro's and filters will be useful again in the 21st century. To my knowledge Canon, Olympus, Sony, etc have missed the consumer boat in engineering their cameras to use the lenses current customers already have in their posession. To be sure, the new lenses will allow for automatic metering, and focus. But for someone who already is comfortable in making my own exposures, and focusing, I can use my stock of lenses that were already invested in.
    Thank you Pentax!
Oh and yes...ps... this camera does indeed make great images! Have no fear.

  4. Having owned a Pentax ME Super SLR for more years than I like to admit, and having had a Minolta digital point and shoot for a few years I decided it was about time I bought a DSLR. I used to shoot slide film all the time, but it is now getting ridiculously expensive to develop and hard to get hold of.
I wanted to use all my old Pentax lenses so the K200d seemed a natural progression. I bought one from Amazon with the 18-55 lens autofocus lens.

I am so pleased with this camera!! I have read some negative comments regarding size etc, but to be honest, I love the solid well engineered feel of it and since I bought it I have looked at a Canon and a Nikon and thought the build quality was inferior.

If you want a DSLR It would be hard to be disappointed with the K200D. I have tried my old standard 50mm 1.7 lens and a Tamron zoom with Carl Zeiss lens and got terrific pictures immediately and being an ME Super user I didn't even miss the autofocus

The built in flash is good enough for short range stuff and I have taken some good flash fill daylight shots with it, but I will now be buying a Pentax flash and I expect I will be happy with this camera for many years

    I love it...get one.

  5. I absolutely love this camera. It gives me the chance to learn and be creative while also using it as a "point and shoot" camera. The shake reduction that is built into the Pentax K200 is awesome. It's extremely difficult to take a bad shot. :) I've taken over 500 shots with the included Engergizer Lithium batteries and still have a full charge. Now I'm addicted to buying lenses for it. You can't go wrong with this camera. I always aspired to buy a Cannon Rebel, but I can't imagine a camera being any better than this one especially for the price. The feel to the camera is fantastic. I thought I would miss the "live view" that I had with my other "point and shoot" cameras, but I'm adjusting well. As other reviewers have said, the Pentax lenses are much more affordable since you don't have to pay for the shake reduction in the lens. I'm giddy and having a blast taking great blurry free shots!
