  1. I bought this camera 2 days ago while on a trip out of state. I bought it to replace another easyshare camera (V803) I lost just the other day.

What I LOVED about this camera was:
    * Ease of use - menu navigation and controls
    * Easier to hold onto not as slippery
    * Fantastic and large LCD screen!
    * Great shots - not blurry like my other Easyshare V803
    * Fantastic video

My V803 always froze on me to where I'd have to remove the battery. If I took pics of my kids they were ALWAYS blurry. I even had the camera serviced 3 times in the first year I had it and it still froze on me.
But the MD863 took FANTASTIC shots! And I was impressed with the shutterspeed.

Only one major problem. The camera made a very high pitched noise when the LCD screen was on. When I recorded video the noise was amplified. The high pitched noise would stop when the LCD screen went off to conserve battery power. Called Kodak and they said I could send it in for repair but with my unsuccessful repair history with the other camera I am going to choose to return it to Walmart instead. I don't want to have to wait weeks for it to get fixed for one, and 2 I don't have a lot of faith that they will actually fix the dang thing. Kodak should just give you a new one when these things happen.

If I cannot get another one (same model) that works, I think this will kill it for me and Kodak. I know they are one of the best brands out there but if I cannot get any luck with 2 different Kodak camera models then I'd be stupid to purchase it again. It's true, hardward just isn't made like it used to be.

  2. I am not one to usually write reviews on products, BUT becuase I am so incredibly disappointed with this particular product, I feel its my duty to warn other unsuspecting shoppers out there!
This camera takes absolutely lovely pictures - as long as they are outside. Any pictures taken indoors are of such poor quality that my camera on my cell phone takes better!! I have tried all the differnt settings and features that the phone offers to see if I can get a better picture and its just not possible on this camera. After only 9 days and over 250 pictures later, I am taking it back today!

  3. Very small, just what we were looking for. My wife can keep this in her purse so we can take pictures anytime we like. We had a larger Kodak camera for a couple of years now but it is not convenient to carry with us all the time. If your looking for a compact camera to carry on the go, this is the one!

  4. This camera is awesome for the price. Takes wonderful pictures (that I take daily) and when you get them printed out at a photo center, they are amazing. Very happy with this camera. Large screen and easy to use.

  5. in the sun you can't see the screen i think all cameras ned a veiw lens on them

  1. Well, at first I was impressed I got my new snappy camera with all the cool features and wow I could use AA batteries.. wait a sec.. 25 pics and I need to change batteries?!?! omg! You sooooo need rechargable batteries for this one or you will go broke!

There is sluggish focus on zoom, although it does zoom tight you have to wait for it ... wait for it.. wait for it.. I got the camera because I needed to photograph small jewelry items for my eBay store.. yikes.. this one is horrible in low lighting situations either you get flash glair or the image is too dark...
Print out and monitor displays ok.

Guess what it's 8 months after I bought this and the thing will not focus at all, the lens won't open and it is useless to me now.. Granted I use it daily.. Maybe let it rest on Sundays..

SO now I am searching for a new camera.. I'll just go pluck some more 100.00 bills off my tree...

    PASS ON THIS ONE!

  2. I bought this camera right before a trip to Hawaii, and i was incredibly happy with the results for the price. Now that i've used the camera on more of a regular basis, i'm in the market for a new one.

While outdoor shots, regardless of the lighting look wonderful, the indoor shots are consistently poor. There are settings on the camera for different types of indoor lighting, but i've never used them because it's too tedious to get to them through the menu.

While usually not bad at all, the lag time after the flash is used is very long. Whenever people want to see their photos right after they're taken, i have to make them wait a couple of seconds for the display to come back on.

If you're looking for an inexpensive camera and most of your shots will be outdoors, this camera is great. Otherwise, there are (hopefully) better cameras out there.

  3. I purchased the L2 prior to a trip to Rome, due to the fact it was small, and easy to carry. It's also easy to operate, and not too expensive, so I can hand it over to another tourist and they can snap away at me in front of old stuff. In the store, it took some nice pics in the right light, so I bought it, and thought it would be fine.
I got some nice photos in Italy, but I would say over half the pics I took ( over 4 Gig) turned out either too dark, black or blurry.
The shutter, flash speed is way too slow, if your subject moves at all, even on sports mode, it's a blur. If the lighting is wrong, it's a blur. The flash is basically worthless after about 5 feet.
I mostly used the default setting on the whole trip with a few exceptions, and I know it has many options.
But a camera should be able to point and click and give you an acceptable shot,...you should not have to access the menu every time to get something useable.
Actually, I wish I had never bought it, it's just too unpredictable...maybe I got a bad one, but after 2 previous quirky Nikon cameras, I think I'll go back to a Canon.

  4. I've had this camera for about two years now and find myself so often frustrated with it that I have taken many fewer photos with it than I had planned. The biggest problem is one stated by a few others - for each shot you basically need to choose a setting, which means going to the menu and switching each time you take a different type photo. I took pictures at my daughter's indoor pool party and wanted to tear out my hair - if I took a close up of a few of the kids, I would then need to quickly change the setting (to which one?) for a group splashing in the water, then change again for a group photo far away, and then go the menu again to figure out which setting to use for kids sliding down the big slide - do I use indoor party? Fireworks? sports? the results would be so different each time I ended up spending too much time deciding on the correct setting and not enough time taking pictures that I didn't need to erase. Many photos were blurry, or dark and it took too much time between shooting photos. Meanwhile my husband was busy taking closeups, action shots and group photos with his small canon and his pictures were great.
I really can't recommend this camera for an adult - I am going to give it to my 10 year old to use and buy myself something else.

  5. I've had this camera for 18 months now, and no matter how I set it up, regardless of the situation... 90% of the pics are terrible! Always blurry, always dark. I have fiddled around with the settings trying to find the right balance, and there isn't one! After reading other reviews, I presume that I purchased a faulty one! Shame on me for not taking it back sooner! I do not recommend this POS and simply suggest spending a little extra money for a D-SLR. Trust me, you will be much happier in the end. (Sorry Nikon... I love my D200, but this thing stinks!)

  1. A great unit, however chip missing, and the video quality in low lite situations is superb. The price was 200 EURO less than in Hamburg shops.

  2. I had the 5 megapixel version of this camera and it was great. When I lost that camera I knew that there was no other point and shoot that I would want to own. The image stabilizer is phenomenal for an amature photographer and it's 100 times better than the kodak cameras that I've owned. I won't buy any other camera for everyday use.

  3. I'm not one who needs to review things, but this camera is special. I have used many digital cameras over many years, each improved over the last model as technology improves and becomes more afordable. Having purchased the FZ18 I noticed the FX30 very is similar in menu and features which I have grown to like on the FZ. There are trade offs with the tiny cameras of optical quality(CCD size)and zoom. Looking at most all others they have similar limitations needing enough light to keep the noise down. Some have much worse quality issues, like so called "digital image stabilization" that automatically lower quality with increased noise to useless levels. The thing I wanted to share is this camera grows on you. I cannot leave it home or often worry it might loose it down the couch or worse! It is cute and needs TLC and just happens to take great pictures too!

  4. I bought this camera for my daughter and she found it a week later in Best Buy for the same price but 10 megapixels. What a deal!! But the camera itself is great.

  5. I gave it three stars because it falls short in one critical area - photo quality.

But first, the good stuff. Like an earlier review noted, the black rubberized finish feels good in hand. The "Intelligent Auto" mode works reasonably well - it was able to distinguish between macro, landscape, portrait and night modes most of the time. The wide angle lens really came in handy for group photos, landscape and architecture shots. Normal operation is fairly snappy, and the menu are easy to figure out. Lastly, the LCD screen's resolution is fairly high, and the gain can be adjusted with one button to aid viewing in bright environments.

However, the photo quality was underwhelming. I've owned a Canon Powershot S410 and Fuji Finepix F20 (both pocket-sized Point & Shoot cameras) and the photo quality in those cameras were superior to the Panasonic. Panasonic cameras have had the reputation of great lenses with mediocre noise reduction, and that's what I expected with this camera. However, the photos are very soft and the colors lack saturation. The noise reduction is noticeable at ISO 200, and is very apparent at ISO 400. This level of noise reduction is not unusual for this class of camera, though I prefer the Canon approach of more detail but more noise.

The camera also has an "Intelligent ISO" mode, which boosts the ISO if shaking or motion is detected in the frame. It sounds good, but it's very aggressive, and the resulting photos are usually shot at fairly high ISO where the detail is lost. There is a option to limit the highest ISO, though the option is not available in "Intelligent Auto" mode.

I haven't printed any photos from this camera, though I would suspect that regular sized prints would be fine. You can usually tell the difference in quality by zooming into a photo, but in this case, I was able to tell the difference even when shrinking the photos to fit in a web album.

It's not a bad camera. I actually enjoyed using it, but at the end of the day, when you sit down and look over the photos you took, that's where the camera underwhelms.

  1. I purchased this for my daughter for her 4th birthday. Shes had it almost a year. She loves to take photos alongside me or just whenever she feels like it. I love how durable this toy is, She has dropped it a few times. Its inevitable. Luckily its held up great. The resolution isnt the best and sometimes the flash overexposes but it is a kids camera so I didnt expect more. She loves to look at the small screen to see what shes captured. Its great training for her to have a better camera one day.

  2. purchased as a Christmas gift for my 5 year old granddaughter. She likes it very much, and it has held up perfectly after being tossed around and dropped many times.

  3. This is the poorest excuse for a "camera" we have ever seen. We purchased it for our 4 year old granddaughter when her baby sister was born last month(March 2008), thinking she would have fun with it while we adults were taking pictures of the new baby.
Well, it takes unbelievably poor quality "pictures," if you can call them that. The LCD screen is so miniscule that even if the photos were actually good, you would not be able to see them very well. No matter how hard you try to keep the camera still (even adults) the photos are always slightly out of focus.
And now I see the camera has gone UP in price! Huh? What's this? We paid $50 for this thing new on Amazon.com and now it is double that price! We have seen comparable (but still bad quality) cameras at CVS drugstores for $20. If you're going to introduce a child to his or her own camera, best to pay as little as possible. For crying out loud, you can pay $98 for a REAL digital camera, which is what a child wants anyway - something that looks like an adult camera.
And, by the way, yes, it can be dropped and won't break. Big deal. I have dropped my little Canon digital Elph a dozen times, even on concrete once, and it still works just fine. So don't let the "durability" of this "camera" be a selling point.
So, bottom line, DON'T BUY THIS CAMERA - it sucks, even for a 4 year old!!

  4. For how much this camera costs, it'll be cheaper to buy a used regular digital camera on eBay and give that to your kid. And I'm talking ones from two years ago that were built tought, not the newer lightweight models, as the older models can take a beating.

My kid loves my old Sony 3.2 megapixel camera. And because of the quality of the photos, they make for great archiving and printing not like the awful photos this camera takes.

Furthermore, if you want something durable, most real-life digital cameras are available with a waterproof external case, which actually works as a great case if your kid drops the camera and would still be smaller than this.

  5. My 3 year old daughter loves this camera!! She takes pictures of everything. The quality of the pictures is what you expect from a kids camera, but they are not terrible. This thing has been abused by both my 3 and 1 year old...Keeps on working!! VERY DURABLE.. Definitely worth it

  1. I used a Pentax waterproof camera prior to purchasing the Olympus, and was satisfied with that one, but wanted a better quality picture. I purchased the Olympus and got just that! The picture quality is just as good as what I got from my non-waterproof camera, the screen size was great, the camera super easy to use, I couldn't ask for more!

On a side note, I also purchased one of these for my son, and his was defective, malfunctioning as soon as it got in the water. Olympus of course replaced it, I think one of the seals was just bad.

  2. It's a handy little point and shoot, but my main reason for buying it was underwater capabilities.

    Pros:
    * underwater photography and video! AWESOME!
    * big huge lcd screen
    * multiple shooting modes
    * compact, light, cheap

    Cons:
    * the menus are so "user friendly" it's almost confusing and childish. If you've NEVER used a camera before, I'm sure it'd be helpful, but for me it's too much extra junk to sift through.
    * unnecessary "favorites" and "shakey" option on mode wheel (should be embedded as a menu option or playback option)
    * alot of menu sifting to adjust white balance and other photo settings.
    * TERRIBLE microphone/sound capture. I hope mine is not defective, because it is really bad. I have a 2 year old 6 megapixel Sony CyberShot thats sound quality is 10 times better. I would advise you not to capture any video where sound is an important factor.

  3. My wife and I are die-hard skiers and we want to photograph the beauty around us while we ski as well as each other. We've tried our other digital camera, a Fuju that we have loved, and our small digital video camera. Both freeze. And when I say freeze, I mean after only moments in the air on a mountain at 32 degrees... or even higher ... they freeze, even after carrying them in an inner pocket to keep them warm. SO, I was hunting for a camera specifically for outdoor photography in the winter on the slopes.

The Olympus Stylus 790SW is almost perfect for the job. First, when outfitted with an in-specification memory card and a fully charged battery, it works great in the cold! We demonstrated this many times this past winter, on mountains that were cold... 20 degrees at noon cold. Second, while we hadn't specifically been looking for it, the camera is shock-resistant. The specs say it will resist the shock of being dropped from a specific height. Well, we haven't dropped it. But we HAVE fallen while its in that inner pocket. I don't believe either of us has fallen directly on the camera, but I certainly worry a great deal less than I have with our other cameras during our winter photography attempts. Finally, it is waterproof to a certain depth in a body of water. This is perfect for those days when the snow is getting under the coat, or even on those occasional rain bursts. No fear of trashing the camera.

The only negative is the lack of a viewfinder. Only the large LCD provide feedback as to what the camera is pointing at. Indoors this is fine. Outdoors, in the bright with white snow reflecting light right at you, this makes it at times impossible to see any hint of what the camera is capturing. Add to this the effect of the polarized lense in most goggles, and its just plain hard to see the LCD while on the slopes. The good news in all of this is that I've taken many a blind photo only to find, when reviewing it that evening, that I got exactly what I was looking for... the only real challenge is holding the camera level.

The bottom line: This is almost the perfect camera to take to the ski slopes, and it would be perfect with a viewfinder that allowed you to see what you are capturing even in the brightest light conditions.

  4. I have purchase 7 of the Olympus Stylus 790SW cameras for the City in their Parks & Rec, Building & Zoning, Engineering, and Utilities departments. They are sturdy and easy to use. In addition, a screen protector has been purchased for each camera. There have been no complaints with this camera.

  5. This is a great camera for a kid. It looks good and is water resistant and shockproof. However, make sure to read the directions together to learn to use it well. They're easy to follow and have plenty of pictures. This camera is kid and user friendly.

  1. Good quality camera. The only con I see is that you have to take out the battery to recharge. It is a hassle.

  2. This is a pretty awesome camera! It takes excellent pictures and if you have a shakey hand, no worries, it has vr reduction that make your pictures come out looking better than ever!
I will say that the menus are somewhat hard to navigate at first. It takes a little tinkering. But straight out of the box it has auto everything so if you dont want to get all fancy, it does the work for you!
It has really cool features, takes EXCELLENT video, and pics are high enough quality to print poster size! If you take a lot of pictures be sure that you have a good enough memory to hold them all if taking all 12.1mp pictures. You can reduce the megapixels if you want.
Another cool features is the BSS, Best Shot Selector. If you have kids playing sports or who just cant sit still, this feature takes up to 10 shots fast and picks and saves the best shot. Pretty cool.

This camera is good for people who want something small, fast starting up and picture taking, and turns out almost professional looking pictures.

The battery life isnt the best, BUT, just buy another battery! Get a high "mAh" battery (cause those last longer). They only cost like $8.00 online, yes, you can find them. Just google en-el 10. The battery takes 100 minutes to charge so I suggest having at least 3 batteries. They are super super small and take up zero room and are way better than lagging around regular batteries.

I would also recommend this camera to professional photographers who want something smaller.

  3. This is one nice little camera. Fits in your shirt pocket & takes wonderful pictures. Ordered it one day & got it the next.

  4. Great picture quality and reasonable capture rates and shutter lag. Navigating the menu to switch between shooting modes is more time consuming than it needs to be.

  5. I purchased this camera based on the positive reviews posted previously. It has absolutely lived up to its great ratings. This is my first digital camera. I bought it a few weeks prior to a vacation and had no trouble learning how to use it in a short time period. It takes great pictures from moving tour buses as well as amazing close ups of flowers and small items. Its small size made it easy to take on tour. I would highly recommend this camera.

  1. I bought this camera nearly a year ago, and I've liked just about everything about this lens. Its size, its image quality, everything. In fact, for my money, it's superior to the XTi since its image quality is better in low light situations. As to why, well, with the XTi, you're fitting 10 megapixels on the same-sized image sensor as the XT, which will create a noisier (grainier) image. The XSi has some advanced hardware that counteracts this tendency.

Having said this, however, there is ONE item I wish the XT had--3200 ISO. In fact, neither the XT nor XTi nor XSi, have this high ISO (they all go up to 1600). I like to take pictures with natural light, and having a 3200 ISO will be helpful in extremely dark situations, like the wedding I just went to recently where the dance floor was essentially without light (and I was shooting with a f/1.8 lens). So, if you see yourself taking a lot of photos in low light, you might as well get the Canon 30D body for $650 (the price as of now--Sept 2008). One final item: I have NO idea why this camera as of Sept 1, 2008 costs $698 with the 18-55mm lens. I bought mine almost a year ago for $450 for the exact same combo! If the price doesn't go down, buy a Nikon D60 (cheaper) or Canon XSi (same price as the XT and way more advanced). Or, best yet, buy a Canon 30D and buy the lens separate. With a Canon 30D and a Canon 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 lens, you can essentially handle anything short of pitch-black scenes.

  2. It gives you enough as it shows. Sometime it has problem with focus if you use manual focusing, but I think it is caused by myself not the machine.

  3. Comfortable, lightweight, and easy to use; with a wealth of options available as I work my way up the SLR food chain. Great photo quality, my only complaint is that in low light without flash the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 gets a lil' bleary. Still, I expect that the IS version of the lens when I get it will help alleviate that difficulty. Crystal clear pictures under normal lighting conditions and the automatic flash will take care of low-light conditions until I get the lens with image stabilization. Professional-looking photos (with my graphic designer background) right out of the box. Easy enough to use that I had no qualms in sending it with my mom to a wedding she was attending and she's STRICTLY point and shoot.

  4. I've taken more than 30,000 pictures with my XT and the biggest problem is that it does such a good job that I have a hard time justifying an upgrade. The images are great up to ISO 400 and very good at 800 and 1600. For the price it's hard to beat, but I'd probably recommend going for a newer camera with the ISO displayed in the viewfinder and a better auto focus system. Also, the included lens is so-so. I use a Sigma 17-70 which is excellent. The 3fps it captures is not quite fast enough for sports, but fine for kids. The grip is a bit small, and the camera can be hard to hold if you have a flash, large lens, and large hands.

  5. I got this about 4 months ago as a present. I must this camera is amazing. I still have yet to master or even start to use 80% of its features. This camera is great for a beginner or really anyone who wants a wonderful yet reasonably priced camera.

But you might just want to spring for a black one. I am not to crazy about the silver. But hey I am not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
