5 comments about Olympus Stylus 840 8 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue).
  1. This camera is great! It takes nice quality video, very good pictures all in a very small package that even looks good. The quality of sound (as others have mentioned) for video is minimal so obviously if you are recording something other than the family vacation you should go to a true video camera. Its very easy to use as well, reading the book was hardly necessary for me. One thing to watch out for is the optional muvee software you can buy after putting the included software on your computer. Think you can edit a "movie" with the "muvee" software? Wrong. All it does is string pictures and sound together for slide shows and it costs 29.95 (I'll consider that money wasted). Olympus has really done a great job with this camera and I think it is a great pocket video/picture taker that I am very happy I bought.

  2. I bought this one for my wife. 5 stars I give here is a measure of her happiness :)
What I noticed and don't like is when you set video recording to highest setting (VGA @ 30 fps) it can record only 10 secs.
Other than that, my wife is happy. Have a good day :)

  3. I recently bought the Olympus Stylus before a trip to Europe. I needed to replace an old SONY camera that had issues holding a battery charge (it took AA rechargeables, which was a nice feature). It was time for an upgrade anyway, so I did a lot of research, wanting to have a balance of price and features. What's great about this camera is its optical zoom (5x). It's also great that there are many features (including a panoramic feature-- it takes a bit to get used to).
    Some negatives:
    1) The battery life runs out pretty quickly (didn't last more than 3 days). This depends partially on the features that you use (it seemed to run out faster when I took panoramic shots or used the menu to adjust the brightness of the shot), but I would advise buying a second battery or have an electricity converter if traveling abroad. One battery, charged once, will not be sufficient. The camera is probably average in terms of battery life, but I had higher expectations.
    2) Sometimes the camera takes blurry shots when indoors, if you're trying not to use the flash (there's a menu that adjusts the brightness- super cool!). This is the only time I was really frustrated with the camera, as a flash sometimes washes out the photo subject. There may be a way to fix the issue, but as the camera is new, I've not yet discovered it.

Overall, I would recommend this camera. It takes great fast-motion action pictures, has brilliant colors in outdoor lighting, and provided for a great way to preserve memories of my trip. Love the 5x zoom. Love the video feature (has sound, which my old camera did not). Love the multitude of features and possible settings.

  4. I was highly disappointed in the photo quality of my new Olympus Stylus 840. It takes the worst, grainiest pictures I've ever seen! I have no idea what camera the people below are reviewing.

  5. I love, love, love this camera. It takes GREAT photos! I have been amazed! It's fun to experiment with all the extra settings but works awesome on automatic. A friend purchased a similar camera the same time I purchased this one. We compared photos and features and she immediately returned hers and traded for this same camera. I highly recommend it!

4 comments about Olympus FE-340 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Red).
  1. Olympus FE-340 has a good sized LCD, 5X zoom, and is very user-friendly specially for people who are simply point-and-shoot photographers.

    PROS:
-- Camera has 5x zoom, looks solidly built, comes in great colors and
the control buttons are very intuitive.
-- Has a Guide option which describes possible shooting scenarios
(like shooting something behind a glass, shooting with bright
backlight) and you only need to select which scenario applies and
the camera provides you with the optimal settings. You just select it,
    then point and shoot.
-- LCD screen is good sized and clear.
-- Provides 4 different preview shots at once (splits LCD display in 4)
and gives you the option to select which shot looks best to you.
-- Image quality is good. Nothing spectacular, just good.

    CONS:
-- Only takes xD picture cards.
-- No burst mode (this is the continuous shooting mode).
-- Write speed and flash recycle time is very slow.

If you like fast burst mode, faster write speed, and SD card compatible,
try either Canon SD1000 or Casio EX-Z80.

  2. This camera is great for taking on a trip or just to take in your pocket. Great pics!
    I recomend this camera.

  3. My 12 year old daughter bought this with birthday money and just loves it. It is incredibly user friendly and takes amazing pics and video. Highly recommend!

  4. Olympus FE-340 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Red)

Just love my little red Olympus camera. I had previously owned an Olympus digital camera but was in need of one with updated features (optical zoom, larger view, slim body, lightweight, etc). In all ways this camera has met my complete satisfaction and was an excellent price on Amazon. Very user friendly, takes great shots! Would recommend this camera to beginners and to those more experienced who wish to take along a compact excellent camera.

5 comments about Olympus Evolt E510 10MP Digital SLR Camera with CCD Shift Image Stabilization and 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Lens.
  1. I purchased this outfit (E-510 plus two kit lenses) not because it's "best in class" (it isn't), but because it seemed the best value in what I was looking for (I concentrate on landscapes, vacations, people; I do not concentrate on sports or formal portraiture). The price for this outfit shrunk from $1,000 to $620 in less than a year and a half. With Olympus introducing the tweaked E-520, the 510 became old hat. An example of excellent (but no longer state of the art) technology deeply discounted.
As for the camera itself, these are its noteworthy attributes that might not be apparent at first study of the specs:
    A) On body (as opposed to on lens) image stabilization. Take a look at lens prices for Nikon or Canon and compare to Olympus' Zuiko equivalents. Nikon and Canon boast on lens stabilization - at a premium price.
    B) High reviews for the optical quality of these kit lenses - at virtually every aperture setting. They're remarkably lightweight too.
    C) Four-Thirds sensor functionally doubles the 35mm equivalent zoom factor of the lenses. Thus the 150mm kit lens magnifies to 300mm equivalent - about 8x zoom.
    D) Relatively lightweight but ergonomically friendly.
    E) Overall picture quality at various settings - really really good!
    Work Arounds:
    A) Noise reduction and sharpness default settings not so good. I prefer the results with the noise filter on "low" and sharpness on "minus one".
    B) Speed: If freezing sport or fast action is important to you, look elsewhere. ISO is best at 100 - 200. Just fine through 400. Beyond 400 to 800 is just OK - too much granularity for my liking. Above 800 - forget it - noise is obvious.
    C) Only downside of the kit lenses are their maximum apertures of f3.5 and f4.0. (Would really like a f2.8.) However, pretty typical in this class.
    D) Built in flash is what you'd expect for this level camera - adequate at best. Consider springing for the Olympus FL-36 - I wouldn't travel without it!
All told - I'm very happy with this camera, especially at this price!

  2. This camera takes amazing pictures! I was going to buy the 520 and then realized for the same price I could get the 510 plus two lenses! The camera is exactly the same as the newer model except for a few new features. If you're anywhere from a beginner to an avid photographer you can't go wrong with this camera!

  3. just use it for a short time. overall is very good and worth the money and it would be much better if the focus system is as fast as cannon's.

  4. I guess it was my fault, but I bought this camera with only one lens. The box came showing it was supposed to be a two lens package (both lenses shown on the outside of the package). I was under the assumption that I was getting a new, unwrapped item and not something that had been repackaged and sold with only one lens. I don't believe Olympus meant for it to be repackaged and sold as it was. This disappointed me.

  5. Good camera - better than the big two in this category of price and quality, Canon and Nikon. This the most highly rated because of its image stabilization feature, which the other two do not have. Otherwise, they are all the same, at the same price. And all take great quality pictures.

5 comments about Kodak EasyShare C743 7.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom.
  1. What can I say about this besides it is great. The camera takes great photos and the printer works great printing high quality photos. I love this item and highly recommend it.

  2. I have had my C743 for over a year now. Over all I have been happy with the ease of use and basic picture quality. The one major drawback is how many batteries this thing will burn through. I have tried several brands of rechargeables and standard batteries. At first I would get 25+ pictures before the camera would shutoff, now over a year later I get 1-2 pictures before it shuts itself off. For the amount of stress and extra cost for batteries I strongly suggest a different camera.

  3. This camera works fairly well, and I've been able to take some really nice photos with it. The biggest problem I've had with it is that it takes batteries (instead of having a rechargeable battery...), and it doesn't take very good close-ups.

  4. Well i have been checking out the reviews on this package deal that i got on the kodak c743 and printer g600! wow i feel pretty good about it now. All i paid was $112.00 at shopko! from the prices i have seen i think i got a heck of a deal!

  5. I previously owned this camera and I broke it on my wedding night!(totally my neglegence) I loved this camera because it took great pictures and they were so clear when viewing on my computer as well as when printed. I was so diappointed that it was a older model and not carried in stores because I needed one immediatley to take a picture to create my thank you card. I was desperate so I decided to by a canon. To my dissapointment, the pictures were not as clear. So, I searched the internet and happily found it avaible on Amazon.com. I was able to soon get started on my thank you cards because my new camera arrived within 3 days! Not only is this a great camera, it's aslo very easy to use!

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix S52c 9MP Digital Camera Zoom with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom with Wi-Fi (Vibrant Black).
  1. I was so excited to receive my brand new CoolPix S52 (Eco-Green), and the photos were really quite excellent. I was also pleased that it was very easy to learn how to use the various camera features. HOWEVER, when I used the movie or voice recording modes there was a very high level of awful static sound recorded EVERY TIME. I upgraded to the best memory card I could find, and that did not make a bit of difference.

Naturally, I returned the camera under Warranty (with sample video/audio) to Nikon TWICE for repair or replacement. To my dismay, they returned it to me both times stating "Your unit was thoroughly checked and was found completely within the factory standards". They also said not to expect the sound quality to be excellent because it didn't have a "sophisticated microphone". Maybe so, but it shouldn't be so poor that you cringe when you listen to the playback.

I was so disappointed that I sold the camera used and replaced it with a Canon PowerShot SD850 IS (Digital Elph) Canon PowerShot SD850 IS 8.0 MP Digital Elph Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom that I am extremely happy with (both photos and sound are fantastic).

Bottom line - if recording movies is important to you, don't buy this camera. It will be a big disappointment and a waste of money. If you decide to buy it, be sure to test the movie and sound recording modes soon after you receive it to be sure you are satisfied.

  2. For some reason Nikon has removed two features from the Coolpix s52c that existed in the Coolpix s7c thereby crippling the Nikon s52c.

First, you should be aware that unlike the Coolpix s7c, the Coolpix s52c is missing the Panorama Assist feature found under the Scenes option. Why Nikon would remove this feature is a mystery to me.

The Coolpix s52c is sold and advertised as a WiFi camera. Unlike the Coolpix s7c, which can wirelessly transmit pictures directly to your own computer hard drive, the Coolpix s52c can only wirelessly transmit pictures to Nikon's MyPictureTown web service or email. Not a great option if you don't have a very fast connection to the Internet. And what happens if Nikon discontinues their MyPictureTown web service? The WiFi feature of the Coolpix s52c becomes useless.

It really is a shame that Nikon has crippled the Coolpix s52c in these two areas. I hope Nikon will restore these two features in a future firmware upgrade.

    Until then - buyer beware.

  3. This camera has an incredible set of features for the price. It takes great pictures and is fast. The only issue I have with it is the wireless. In the advertising they make it sound like you can upload the pictures directly to your PC and that isn't true, you have to set it up to go through a web site then copy to your PC. other than that, greta camera, good price, excellent quality.

  4. The camera itself is great. The WIFi feature is a waste because it limits you to sending a down-sampled version of your image to a Nikon-owned web site - NOT your hard drive, which would be a much better use of the networking feature.

Hopefully they will kick-out a firmware update that un-cripples this feature. Why would I want to upload an image to someone else's web site (with limited storage).

  5. I have a canon sd870 and am really happy with it. Recently I ordered a coolpix s52c for my mom, since the review looks great and I want to try out a different compact DC. I have to say I am very disappointed with coolpix s52c, for the following 2 reasons:

    1) the shutter speed is very slow. After shooting one photo, it takes about 3 secs for user to shoot the next one, since it takes awfully long to save a photo. My canon sd870 only needs 1 sec, by comparion. This is the main reason I don't like this camera.

    2) the buttons are hard to press. A lot of times I thought I pressed on a button however camera didn't respond, so I had to press hard again and again.

    I am returning this camera.

4 comments about Canon Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black).
  1. If you want more bang for your buck, get the Canon EOS Rebel XSi instead of the Rebel XS. The XS is the "little brother" of the XSi which means they are both almost the same camera, but the XSi has more to offer than the XS. At the time of this writing, Amazon.com is currently selling the XSi for the same price as the XS! You would be foolish to buy the XS now instead of the XSi, especially on the fact that the XSi was released not long ago in April 2008. In other words, you have two very similar models that were both released in 2008, just four months apart, but yet the XSi has more capabilities and features than the XS and costs the same. The XS is just a trimmed-down version of the XSi.

Here are the notable similarities of the Rebel XSi and the Rebel XS:
    * Both have practically the same large single-plate CMOS sensor and the Digic III Image Processor, except the XSi is 12.2MP while the XS is only 10.1MP (megapixels).
    * Both have the Canon EOS Integrated Cleaning System.
    * Both can be purchased with the same EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Kit Lens. If you buy the XSi camera body only, it's even cheaper than the XS with kit lens.
    * Both have Live View Function with their LCD displays.
    * Both are compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses.
    * Both utilize SD and SDHC memory cards.
    * Both use the same battery pack (LP-E5) and the same optional battery grip (BG-E5).
    * The XS is compatible with most of the Canon EOS camera system accessories that can be used with the XSi.

Now here are the differences between the "newer" Rebel XS and the recently released Rebel XSi:
    * The XSi has more megapixels at 12.2MP while the XS is 10.1MP.
    * For JPEG, the XSi can continuously shoot at 3.5 fps while the XS can do 3.0 fps. But for RAW, the XSi is a lot better at 3.5 fps while the XS can only do 1.5 fps.
    * The LCD monitor of the XSi measures 3.0 inches while the XS has a smaller screen at 2.5 inches.
    * The XSi has a 9-point AF system while the XS has only a 7-point.
    * The XSi has Spot metering while the XS does not. Both have Evaluative, Partial, and Center-weighted metering, however.
    * XSi's RAW is 14-bit while the XS RAW is 12-bit.
    * XSi has Highlight Tone Priority while the XS does not.
    * The viewfinder of the XSi provides 0.87x magnification while the XS provides 0.81x.
    * The XSi can utilize the RC-1 or the RC-5 wireless remote shutter release, but the XS is not compatible with either so you won't be able to use a wireless remote release.
    * You cannot buy the XS without the kit lens.

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi clearly is the better choice and if you are buying your very first digital SLR camera, the XSi is a top model for entry-level compared to others currently out on the market. With the XSi and the XS being sold at the same price, why would you go for something that has less to offer?

    * August 19, 2008 UPDATE *
Amazon.com has lowered the price of the XS, which makes it somewhat cheaper than the XSi as of this update, but I still strongly feel that the XSi is a better value. Do know that the price of the XSi has dropped significantly throughout Summer 2008, so I'll bet that the XSi and the XS models will have a price war as time goes on.

NOTE: Canon USA officially released the EOS Rebel XS in August 2008 and was first announced by Canon USA on July 8, 2008.
"Date first available at Amazon.com: June 17, 2003" is truly an error.

  2. We are now seeing a real first...the first Digital EOS that hasn't got people flocking to the stores. Why? Price, and a lack of anything "innovative". However, on the good front, speaking with a Canon Sales Rep, he has told me to expect the gap between the XSi and XS to quickly go to $200, which is a more realistic valuation, and would probably warranty another star, as the XS is really a very nice camera.

You've probably seen many lists comparing the XS to the XSi, and noticed the shortcomings, which are too numerous for $100. However, compared to some of the competition, it's not all bad. Take as an example the Nikon D60. Both are 10mp, but the Canon is a CMOS sensor, that should produce a tad better photos in poor lighting conditions. You also get a 7-point AF system vs. 3-point.

Compared to the Sony Alpha 300, it's hard pay $100 premium, considering the Alpha has in camera stabalization, supports wireless flashes (with built-in flash) and has a 2.7" tiltable live-view. But the Canon kit lens is better optically, and the build quality appears to be slightly better on the XS. When the price drops, they'll be equally good values.

But as most people have said, the XSi is a 5-star camera worth $200 extra; therefore, the price of the XS needs to reflect that reality.

  3. I have owned this camera since 2004, so I find the earlier review, written in 2008, which suggests this camera isn't sending folks flocking to the stores, a little strange. The flocks are probably looking for newer models. Anyway, after four years, I needed a new battery, and found myself checking out the newest options for a moment, and thought I'd review my reliable old friend.

This camera is fast, quiet, and the photos are outstanding. I primarily use the automatic functions, and it is a breeze to get amazing photos. I am an avid amateur photographer with more of an interest in the composition of the picture than in exposure settings and such, and I have found this camera to be wonderful in every way. After four years, the two batteries I have had since the beginning are finally failing, and I have had a few minor problems during battery malfunctions. Other than that, the camera is durable, has traveled the world, taken thousands upon thousands of photos, around the world, and of my precious children at home. A favorite subject of mine is flowers, and this camera does an amazing job on those as well. I couldn't be happier with this camera, and can only hope it will give me another four years, or more!

  4. I am definitely a novice who just got tired of using compact pocket type digital cameras and getting bad pictures (usually due to the shutter delay).

I know nothing really about photography but I like the size and weight of this camera. Some reviews suggest it is too expensive for its features but for me the size, weight and supports SD memory were very important. Quality of the images are amazing (well I think they are!) but I may need to tweak it a bit as the images are huge (3MB+).

I am sure as I get better with photography I may start to notice deficiencies but in the meanwhile I am happy with my purchase.

  1. I have a D-SLR that I use on a regular basis since photography is my hobby. I wanted a small camera that I could put in my pocket or purse instead of carrying my backpack of camera & lens around when I was just out & about. This camera takes as nice of pictures as my Canon and I am able to adjust the f/stop & shutter speed as well. There are around 16 pre-set modes that are helpful. The 14.5 mp is an added bonus if I want to enlarge my photographs. The case is sturdy and it does come with a ac charger & USB cable. I used a SDHC class 6 memory card to remove any lag time between pictures and for good video footage. You will not be disappointed.

  1. For $50 bucks, you get what you paid for.
The batteries tend to die very quickly, so always keep a few AAA batteries with you, and when the batteries start to go low, it starts altering the images you take, skewing them slightly.
You can only zoom AFTER the picture is taken, not before, so make sure you stand exactly where you need to.

I like the fact that it also works as a webcam, I haven't used that feature yet. Also I like the SD card reader, you can always empty out all the pictures almost immediately, either by connecting the camera to your PC, or taking out the SD card and dumping it into your machine.

all an all its pretty good for $50, but only expect to do the very basic with it, if your looking for something that will allow you to take AMAZING pictures, then this is not for you. This is good as a "practice" camera, its simply, easy to work, and fun to have when your out with a bunch of friends just goofing of.
So if you just need something to take quick pictures of your friends during a day at the zoo, this would be good for you, just keep those extra batteries handy, especially if your going to use the flash.

  2. I bought this camra instead of a disposable to put in the truck glove box. Seems to work fine.

  3. I got the camera on time, but it is not what I expected. It runs VERY SLOW and its picture quality is not very good. I can take better pictures with a disposable camera. DO NOT buy this!!
