  1. This camera and lens is a good match. The kit has everything you need to get started. Both the camera and lens are rugged, fast and flexible enought for people that would be using it outdoors in the real environment. It's water and dust resistant, shock proof. I use it on hikes and campouts. The battery capacity is not as good as I've seen on other DSLRs, so buy a couple of extra batteries.

  1. Just bought this camera at a discount retailer for under $20 and am taking it back. Bought it for our young child to play with and it just frustrates her, and us. It has a long lag time and it is even hard to shut off. Not worth the money!

  2. I received this back in October and I can almost never use it now. I keep getting errors on it and they don't go away even after taking the batteries out. Not worth the money.

  1. I bought this camera for $199 in 2004. I liked that it was a high pixel camera, had a color LCD screen and had many different modes (macro, black & white, sepia, movie, portrait, etc). In 2 years, I have taken approximately 2000 pictures and several dozen videos. The only picture quality issue I have had was that I kept getting blurred pictures until I turned the automatic flash on, and I have not had any problems with blurring since then. I have used the color format, black & white, and sepia formats, as well. I am VERY "camera dumb" and didn't actually get around to reading my manual until just this year, yet I hadn't ever had an issue with using this camera, it is fairly user friendly. Unlike other reviewers, I have never, ever had an issue with any card errors, lenses freezing up, camera shutting off, card erasing pictures, etc.....however, I recently noticed that my battery wasn't holding a charge. We took the camera to the store we purchased it from and they said the camera's battery charger was defective, so they sent us a replacement. It did not work, so my husband again took the camera to the store and they said that there must be something wrong with it, so it has been sent back to the manufacturer to be "fixed" or to be replaced with a comparable item. After reading all these reviews, I am fervently hoping that they replace it with a different brand!
So, even though the particular camera I have had has worked well for me over the past 2 years, I don't want to chance losing any pictures or having the issues that other people have had. I take so many pictures that not having a working camera for even a couple weeks is very, very frustrating for me!

  2. Maybe I just got lucky, but this has been a terrific camera for me! I've had it since January 2005, and with 2 little ones around you can bet it's snapped it's share of photos. I did lose the pictures once (thankfully I'd already downloaded them) and realized that I was trying to switch modes while the camera was on. I stopped doing that and the problem never happened again. The memory format error finally happened a couple weeks ago, but really, most hard drives need to be reformatted after a couple years too! Most of the pictures have been great, though the auto flash red eye reduction isn't the best. This little camera has even withstood the occasional unauthorized use by my 4 yr old! It's not the biggest or the best, but for me it's been great!

  3. I have had this camera for more than 2 years by now. I was surprised to see the negative reviews by others, since none of such bad instance happened to me. When I bought this camera, 5.25 MP was not very common yet. Plus, it is compact, light and stylish. It takes great pictures. It also has a movie mode, which we often used, and one time we recorded a great movie when a family of deer walking through our back yard calmly. The only additional accessory we bought is a 256 MB SD card. With a 256 MB card, we always managed to load the pictures onto a PC and free the card for more pictures. We love this camera, and can't find anything bad to comment on.

  4. My friend bought this camera for me right before I had my first child. I was thrilled!!! Well, the camera was outstanding for about 6 months. Then, all of the sudden it would tell me error messages such as "Protected Card" or "Card read error" or "Low Battery" even though the card was fine, and I confirmed this with multiple cards, and replaced the battery (Via the mail, you can't walk into a camera shop and get the battery) and the battery really wasn't the issue.

Sadly, with all of the functions, this camera turned out to be a bust, and I can't even use it anymore.

  5. I received this as a gift in 2005 I think , I am able to get a good outside picture, they are excellent, and one feature that I have used repeatedly is the movie clips, I make short movies, load to the computer, loop them in a software, edit, and leave the sound, and can then add low music , set a theme for my movies I have hundreds of little clips , well thousands now, turned into many fantastic memories, I have not missed , outside adventures, birthdays, christmas , you name it, its great for making these little clips........ Pictures inside the house, is my big let down, I too wish I had taken this back to the store in time, what a let down, I had a Fuji camera before, and it took the greatest pictures, and this camera was suppose to have been a big step up, from my lower megs. it was not! The reason the pictures are not good inside is light does not seem to get in the little hole well enough, I can move my camera back and forth, over my light gray carpet, and it changes from orangish tint to normal, I have lost many good shots with the camera in the house, and some I have kept , its been hard trying to salvage shots, in photo softwares, just because light can not get in good enough.

  1. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!! I am not a digital camera novice so when I read the negative reviews, I assumed they just didn't know what they were doing. Well, I was wrong, this camera is horrible! It takes great shots outside but you can't tell that when you take them b/c of the lack of a viewfinder, it is all but impossible to see the picture you are taking. That's just a minor inconvience though. The major problem is that all of the pictures of my daughter's first 4 months of life are so grainy as to be unusable. This camera is the worst I have ever used indoors. No matter what setting you use, it is terrible! Unless you only plan on using it outdoors in the shade, do not buy this camera! I will never be able to regain those pictures, I hope you make the smart choice & don't have to go thru the same thing.

  2. Takes great outdoor pictures. Indoor pictures are not the same. I took more blurry indoor pictures from this camera than all my cameras combined. Recommend to leave the flash on at all times to minimize this problem. Using the image stabilizer indoor tend to produce pictures that are too dark to be any good. Using the zoom indoor for long distance shots tend to produce blurry pictures as well unless the camera is placed on a tripod. I would not buy this camera for the zooming or image stabilizing feature.

  3. I have had my Olympus 740 for about a year. I mostly take photos of my now 18 month old. I usually get photos of where he just was because it takes so long to take the picture! Also, if I take pictures in the school gym, like for the school concerts, they ALL come out blurry. I thought that perhaps I just needed a professional camera, but then tried my sister-in-law's point and shoot fuji camera (can't recall the model) and it was WAY faster! And the photos she e-mails me are a lot sharper and have better color. My olympus has a lot of "features." I do like the candle light option, and I like the one when you hold the trigger down and it takes a bunch of pictures one after the other. But it usually takes about 8 seconds between shots. Thats too long if your subject is moving, or if you want to capture a cute or funny moment. If you want great photographs, look elsewhere.

  4. I usually follow Consumer Report in everything I buy but decided to go off the beaten track this one time as I thought their choices were out-dated. I should have gone with their reviews. Maybe I don't know how to use this but I have never taken so many blurry pictures in my life. I have considered getting my old film camera out and using that again instead. I tried to take several pictures of my son goign down a little hill on his sled but none turned out, all blurry and/or too dark. I was very disappointed as we were visiting grandma and we don't get snow where we live so this was a one-time opporuntiy. I like being able to carry it in my purase at all times to take last minute shots but what good is it if they don't turn out. I'm constantly correcting them in Photo Shop and there is only so far you can go before they start looking grainy. Anyway had I not waited a year to really try it out I would have returned it and checked with Consumer Report to see what would be a good buy. I still may just give this to my 4-yr old son and get a better camera for me. We didn't get nearly as many good shots on our Disney vacation as I would have like. Like one other reviewer said it takes too long for the photo to take and you miss alot when you're taking pictures of children.

  5. I have purchased 3 of the 740's mainly for the 5x optical and wish they did not discontinue this model. It does everything I need in a ultracompact digital camera. Great camera and great service from Amazon with putting me in touch with reputable sellers. Thanks John Anderson

  1. Pentax Optio 50L proves to be a very sturdy, reliable and what appears to be well constructed camera. The main selling point of this camera is the ease of use. And this is a very easy camera to use, anyone can probably master this camera within minutes after reading the Pentax's paltry instruction booklet. They even have a dial marker that would almost make this camera into one of them ancient Kodak Instamatic!! (Anyone remembered those??)

Since Amazon have provided the specifications, I would go on to the camera's performances.

Sad to say, this is a pretty average camera. Everything about it is, average in terms of image quality, autofocus speed, and other stuffs that layman photographers usually looks for. The 2.5 inch LCD is nice but pretty average in performance, big enough to look but fades in the sunlight. At 200 ISO, there were some noises which I thought shouldn't be there. The features are pretty average, nothing truly exceptional about this camera outside of the ease of use.

There are some downsides to this camera as well. The ISO rating goes only up to 200 ISO. That kind of limit the camera a bit for indoor shots. To make the matter worst, the built-in flash for this camera is pretty pathetic. The flash proves to be weak and rather short ranged. Almost useless unless you are firing away at point blank range. I was also disappointed that this camera could not accept CRV3 battery like the Optio 30 can.

This would be a hard camera to recommend to any body out there reading this. I think there's a better camera around this price range somewhere out there. I recommended you keep looking.
