5 comments about Canon PowerShot A650IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.
  1. I have had no problems so far with this camera. I particularly like the increased resolution on the LCD. It makes it easier to see if the pic was out of focus. I also have found that pictures in low lighting have been coming out well using the ISO feature. The 6x optical zoom is also great for this type of camera. 12.1 Mega pixels allows you to take a picture and zoom way in on details without losing resolution. Make sure you have at least a 2mb card if you plan to shoot regularly at 12.1.

  2. This is a good little camera. I bought it to upgrade my ancient A70, which I liked except for its postage stamp lcd. My main complaint about the camera is the price, and that's why I don't give it a higher rating. It was selling for under $300 in the early summer. I watched the price rise to over $400, looked around, and bought it elsewhere for $350 by a supplier who hadn't apparently caught on to the price increase. The $475 that it's selling for today is way too much; you can get an excellent digital slr, the Canon Rebel XSi for $650! Anyone know why the price increased?

    Pro:
    Great Canon interface and controls.
    Lots of great manual controls.
    Good videos with sound.
I like and use the neat hinge on the lcd.
    Lcd size is sufficient.
    Histograms on the photo playback.
Good optical and digital zoom with a little color-coded bar on the lcd that tells you when you're zoom is getting into an area where your photos could suffer from camera shake.
    Image stabilization.

    Cons:
    Overpriced.
The 12 megapixels is overkill. If you need great resolution, why not get a slr with a good lens? I shoot at 5 or 8 mp.
Narrow range of aperture compared to a slr. At the small end, it only goes to f8. You can stop it down to f2.8--not bad, I suppose.
Photos are noisy at higher ISO numbers.

When I was shopping I recall seeing other point-and-shoot Canons for quite a bit less. You might have to drop down a few megapixels, give up image stabilization, and/or the lcd hinge. Sorry, I don't recall the model numbers, but it might be worth looking around. If I were to do it over, I'd buy a less expensive super compact and a Rebel xsi.

  3. It is a great camera... The only downside is the flash it leaves much to be desire t would be nice if I had a hot shoe. But I have a slave flash that i can use the old fashioned way... manually. I love the picture quality.

  4. Do not waste your money on the wide angle lens adapter and filter kit. The adapter and all accessories will not work if you need to use the flash. The adapter is so big it blocks the flash in the scene creating a dark spot in the bottom right hand corner. Stupid design. Camera needs a hot shoe for an external flash. Also, when using wide angle, it makes a cameo image...meaning each corner has a black triangle where the camera can not see becuase the adapter blocks the light. So you have to zooom in to get them out of your picture....defeats the purpose of a wide angle lens. Spent an extra $250 on these parts and it was a waste of money. I like to do interior shots of home for real estate but the wide angle is useless if you use flash....big black spot in each corner.

  5. i have this camera as a backup to my dslr (canon xsi at this moment)...

the quality of the pictures is amazing for point and shoot! it can rival xsi occasionally!

    works off 4 AA batteries:
    + can buy them anywhere
    + flash loads fast
+ takes humongous amount of shots before replacement is needed

image stabilization is a dream :)

some people say that it does not feel solid - feels pretty darn solid to me :)

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix S52 9MP Digital Camera Zoom with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom (Red).
  1. I love this camera; it is my second one. i wish it would refresh a little more quickly, but i'm happy with the features and it is easy to use

  2. I love my AA battery operated Nikons so I thought it would be great to get one with a rechargable battery. After much searching, I purchased this camera. It was a bit different from my previous Nikons but the pictures were clear and the camera was pretty eary to use. A week later my LCD screen was shattered. I dropped it in my bag after taking a picture and thought notheing of it. When I went to take another picture I was stunned and upset that I could not see what I was taking a picture of. To add insult to injury, I cannot find the receipt - I hope the credit card bill will suffice. I know it is my fault for just dropping it in my bag but it's a point and shoot camera for goodness sake!

  3. Every camera I have ever own has been a Nikon from film to digital. I still own & use every Nikon I have, This camera takes great pictures, it is small compact, if you are looking to buy your first camera I recommend buy a digital camera that the lens doesn't pop out, I have had friend that have put them in there pockets to have them accidentally turn on and boom camera breaks because the lens could open & of course camera is now broken. You buy one like this one you can't break the lens unless you stab it, this is my 2 cents.

  4. Bought one for my Mom, one for my son, and one for myself, when they went on sale at Ritz camera for 150.00. Menu is so easy to understand, my Mom was even able to figure it out with a little help. Got it for her to load pics on Ebay. The LCD is so clear and big, I am able to take video clips of my golf swing, and view them on sunny days at the course. This is being phased out for the newer 10MP S-60, which has the touch screen, which I dont really need anyway. Only complaint on the Nikon Coolpix models...DONT DROP THEM! Mine fell about 12 inches, off my computer to the desk, and the LCD broke internally. If my cell phone was this delicate I would have to replace it once a week. Only other complaint would be the proprietary USB plug which seems to change every year with Nikon and cost a fortune if you lose it. Other cameras I looked at that had the standard USB plug and were more rugged, either didnt have the big LCD screen or didnt use the new SDHC high speed memory cards which are the best.

  5. I bought it for my daughter and she absolutely loves it and it is so user friendly for even someone like me who never takes good picture.

  1. I just got this camera this week and I love it.

Pros: The screen is quite viewable in bright sunlight. Dual memory support gives you a choice on which media to buy. (I'm using a Class 6 4GB micro SDHC card). 5x optical zoom (the largest I've seen in this size and price range.) The iAuto is pretty smart. The camera is easy to figure out and use.

Cons: I'd like to turn off the image preview that comes up right after you take a picture. The "Smile shot" is cool, but I haven't been able to figure it out completely (I'm going to keep trying)

Conclusion: I don't regret getting this camera. We're going camping in a couple of weeks and we'll see then how well this camera will work. For the most part, I'm very satisfied with this camera.

10/13/08 Took the camera camping this last week and it performed wonderfully! I was able to take pictures of whatever I wanted. I was able to get the pictures I wanted without any trouble. I played more with the smile shot and I'm getting better with it. I think it's a worthwhile feature.

5 comments about Olympus Stylus 760 7.1MP Digital Camera with Dual Image Stabilized 3x Optical Zoom (Silver).
  1. And it is little and light - perfect size to put in your purse or pocket. This is my second Olympus and I really like it - it has tons of great features! I'm not great with technology by any means, but I figured this camera out quickly, and have taken some great pictures. The large viewing screen is great - compared to my old Stylus 410 with a quarter sized screen. I have had no issues with glare or poor pictrue quality. The Olympus software was very easy to load onto my compture and is very easy to use to edit photos! I would recomend this camera !

  2. An outstanding camera for several reasons.Great price, user friendly, wide range of features, size, quick recovery time, great flash and AMAZING battery life.
I have had several Olympus cameras-most recently a D-560 zoom-a THIS one is a quantum leap into the 21st century.Got my wife a Sony (Cybershot DSCW80 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and Super Steady Shot-Pink) which is as good as this camera, but a more expense with essentially the same quality and features.
If you looking for a great "point and shoot" this IS it -and- it has advanced features when you need them-2 close ups;wide range of automatic shooting situations, etc.
I strong recommend this handy, compact digital camera!

  3. This little camera takes a beating and keeps on ticking. I was holding it up to take a shot of my family of four and neglected to put the strap around my wrist (stupid, I know). The outer bezel is bent, but it still takes great pictures.
I don't recommend trying this to test its durability, but if you're looking for a small camera for travel and quick pics, this camera does that and has many great features beyond that.

  4. omg i loved this camera! i dont really have much experince with cameras since this one was my first, but compared to other cameras i've seen this one really stood out.
the only thing that sucks is that i didnt buy warranty and my sister dropped it on cement! so now i need another one, im actually thinking of getting it repaired but i heard it's a lot more expensive than buying it again.
well anyways it took wonderful pictures, which my friends always complimented. i love that you can edit the pictures on the camera! the videos also look really nice. it is a little big, it does fit in your pocket though. i also liked the flash on it!

  5. I just wanted a camera for snapshots and candid photos, nothing fancy. I had this camera for a year, and got poor quality pictures the whole time. It was easy to use, but photos were either grainy or blurred. After consulting the manual several times, no error could be found. It was small and light, but didn't suit my needs.

5 comments about Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.
  1. I bought the G9 several months ago and planned to use it as an underwater camera. I am leaving on a dive trip in several weeks and checked the new camera. The screen is cracked. I have yet to take the first picture with the camera. A cracked screen of a brand new camera is evidently not covered by warranty to the tune of $170. Well .... maybe it takes good picture.
    Signed pissed off

  2. The G9 is a wonderful small format all-in-one camera. I've shot around 12,000 images in the last 4 months, literally living in the western National Parks, and I've been very pleased. The anti-shake is a real speed boost in low light...clarity of images is superb. Yet problems remain. Who could design a camera where BOTH the viewfinder (so important in bright daylight and for reading glasses wearers in various situations where one doesn't have time to put them on and see the LCD clearly), AND the LCD itself BOTH show an image of a different size than what you will eventually download to your computer? It's a horrid flaw. The views in the LCD are ~10% larger than the captured image, and the viewfinder allows one to see only about 75-80% of what will comprise the final image.
Thus one can shoot what the viewfinder shows and later crop the unseen/unwanted edges and discard 20% of the pixels on every shot, but always get a full image of the subject, or one can use the LCD and try to make sure the desired image is close, but not TOO close, to the edges of what the LCD shows, because one will lose tops of steeples, tops of trees, peoples' hair, etc, etc., repeatedly, if one has not developed interpolation skills to overcome these viewing size mismatches. You'd think they'd have made ONE of the two viewing tools produce a WYSIWYG final image (WYSIWYG = Silicon Valley-speak for "what you see is what you get", an Apple innovation from the ancient era of Pac-Man and 128MB microprocessors). This engineering lunacy makes the camera always annoying. One can work around this stupidity with great success; I always try to take extra images while interpolating off the LCD. But despite such attempts to compensate, even the experienced user occasionally gets that clipping off of items one wanted intact at the top edge of the frame...WHY WHY WHY couldn't they have made at least the LCD WYSIWYG? Or, as a less satisfactory solution, have placed demarcation lines around the edge of the LCD screen showing where the real image ends and the stuff you will never record begins? OH...and the provided stich image software always leaves darker tones as lines through the sky where the stitch occurred. Thanks for the 88% engineering job, Canon! Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP Digital Camera with 6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

  3. I have only had this camera a few months and have not used it very much. There is already so much dust INSIDE the lens that it severely degrades image quality. I take great care of my equipment, so this is not the result of harsh conditions. If you are counting on the built-in lens cover to protect the lens, think again. Any time I shoot slightly into sunlight now, the photos are basically worthless. With only 3 major uses of this camera, that's a crime.

Also, the noise level above ISO 200 is terrible. I would rather have fewer megapixels and less noise. So, my summary is this is a camera you have to "baby". It is severely limited and not worth the money. Read the reviews and find something that keeps dust out better and has less noise above ISO 200. If you only shoot on sunny days with the sun at your back in a very clean environment, this camera might work. But so would something $200 less expensive. I feel totally cheated.

  4. I am a professional photographer and this is the only camera I use. When I am exhibiting (usually large works of 1m2), other photographers will come up to me with clunky SLRs around their necks asking what I shoot with. When I pull out the tiny G9 they think I am joking.

Great camera. Works best in manual mode. I was afraid to get it because I had read so much about bad quality control (factory defects), but I haven't had any problems.

  5. Best Buy outlets have Canon G9 on clearance for $350, which is about the max I believe you should be paying for it nowadays. The model is quickly becoming obsolete. The next generation of prosumer cameras has already entered the the market (Canon G10, Panasonic LX3, Nikon P6000, etc). So unless you get a really good deal, there are few compelling reasons to buy G9 any more. One caveat, however: if portrait taking is of importance to you, this is the area where G9 still delivers the goods (more on it later).

Other people have already discussed nearly every aspect of the camera in great detail. So I just have a couple of additional comments and observations to share with those who are still considering G9. Hope that some folks will find these useful.

    1. A number of Canon G9 users have complained of dust getting into the lens barrel. Apparently this stuff coats the inside of the lens elements and essentially turns the camera into a useless piece of junk. It is a known manufacturing defect, wherein dust is trapped within the bodies of some cameras during the production. Canon will clean it out for free during the warranty period. Obviously, not every camera has been affected, and the lens on my camera has stayed crystal clear. But if you are considering buying G9 on E-bay, it helps to be aware of the issue.

    2. At the full extended zoom (6x), Canon G9 blurs the background and takes studio-quality portraits. This is where G9 really shines. There is a beautiful 3-dimensional aspect to the faces, just like what you see on professional photos. In my opinion, this is by far the best feature of this camera. I previously owned Sony V1, which had a large sensor coupled with a high quality Zeiss lens. It produced excellent photos, but it could never match the portraits that come out of G9.

Incidentally, judging from the CameraLab review of G10 (Canon's next generation upgrade to G9), the G10's shorter telephoto lens (5x) loses the capability of shallowing the depth of field, and as a result produces only average portraits. So in my unprofessional opinion, G9 will beat G10 in portrait quality on any given day.

    3. I love the photostitch mode. It creates some amazing panoramic pictures; you gotta see them to believe.

    4. Low light performance is OK, but not quite as good as some other point and shoot cameras. Pictures with ISO above 400 are only marginally useful.

    5. The dynamic range of the photos is frankly mediocre. Hopefully, Canon G10 will perform better in this area, thanks to its new intelligent contrast feature. I-contrast is a new image processing algorithm designed to brighten up dark areas on the picture. Nikon P6000 has a similar function called D-lighting. It is my understanding that you can improve dynamic range of your photos by fiddling with RAW images on the computer, but I have not been so successful using Canon supplied software. I do not own Adobe, which could be my problem to begin with.

    6. The G9 lens is not quite as sharp as I expected coming from Canon. I am not talking about the soft-looking image tones, which are a hallmark of all Canon cameras (as opposed to Sony or Panasonic). What I am trying to say is that the detail-resolving power of Canon lens on G9, while by no means poor, does not quite match what you get from Zeiss or Leica. Apparently, Canon has been painfully aware of the fact. As a result, Powershot G10 is reported to have been given a much sharper lens with greater detail resolving power.

    7. No matter what settings I use (including custom white balance, different saturation and sharpness levels), my camera is uncapable of correctly rendering the purple color. The color looks violet on final images, which is close enough but no cigar. Sony V1 renders the same color accurately on auto mode.

    8. Finally, the camera has a neck strap, but no wrist strap. Most of you don't care, but those who prefer a wrist strap will have to search for an aftermarket option.

  1. Buenas noches yo quisiera saber donde esta mi camara fotografica ya que la compre el 8 de agosto y el 18 del mismo mes fue entregada en una residencia y desde entonces no se nada de la camara fotografica

  2. I received this camera as a gift and had to send it in three times to be fixed. (Yes, I am EXTREMELY careful with my cameras) First, the lens would not go back inside. Second, because it would not charge. Third, for the lens again. I used it once after it got sent back and it broke again. A waste of time.

  3. I purchased this camera for my son, for his girlfriend for christmas. I have already purchased this same exact camera in the past and the receiver of it loves it. It takes great pictures.

  4. The Camera came quickly and very well wrapped in it's original seal. Just FYI- if you get it threw UPS, the box was thrown to my door from my gate 3 feet away! Other than that, the camera is Fabulous!

  5. I bought this camera while i was pregnant because i figured i would need a good one for when the baby came. I was really pleased with it and it did take really nice photos. The videos werent the best but i suppose you cant expect perfect videos from a cheap camera. When the baby came i had someone running around the delivery room snapping pictures. Every other picture was blurry. I dont know if it was the operator or just the camera. I did notice that you had to wait a long time and have the perfect light for the camera to take really good pics. After having the camera for about 2 or 3 months i had an accident involving dirty baby clothes a misplaced camera and a washing machine...needles to say the camera didnt make it out alive. I decided to go ahead and buy the same camera agian. I was still pleased with it but a little bummed i couldnt find the 10mp for as cheap so instead i had to settle for the 8.2. Anyways im an avid review reader and i had read a couple that said the camera straight up quit working after 6 months. I decided to ignore them because most of the other comments were totally positive. I had my second camera for about 5 months and it died...on its own...no washing machine involved. It was like the Auto Focus just completely quit working for some reason. (really bad timing too because i was at the hospital with my friend while she was having HER baby when i found out it quit working.) Anyway i liked the camera but cant decide if i want to try it out a third time and risk the chance of getting burned.

4 comments about TWO BATTERY And CHARGER For CANON Digital Rebel XT Xti.
  1. So far so good. The charger works well no problems. The batteries were just a bonus since I really just needed the charger. But so far they seem good. Not as good as the Canon brand ones as far as holding a charge. But they do alright. I have only had these less than a month so I have no idea on how long they will last. But overall for the money spent. It is a good deal..

  2. I purchased this product about three months ago. The charger works great. Both batteries hold charge very well. No problems with the performance of my camera.

  3. This was a replacement for the stock charger that went missing, and it seems to be charging the stock battery just fine. I considered the spare batteries a bonus and haven't used them enough to know what kind of life to expect.

  4. Charger i ordered was bad in quality.
    Worked one time only.
    Lousy product, lousy quality

5 comments about Canon EOS 50D 15.1MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Standard Zoom Lens.
  1. I am about 1,000 images into the new 50D. So far it's been a pleasure. I am switching from a Nikon D200. Nikon, to me, has superior ergonomics - the buttons and functions are so well thought out. Canon works well too but sometimes I feel like I need to be double jointed to change a setting. I do not like the wheel on top; the silver color is not great and it turns to easily. I have switched modes in the middle of shooting and not known it. But, the camera feels solid, the screen is absolutely amazing, the menus are super easy to navigate, the 6 frames per second is impressive. 15 megapixels; well, you only need it if you are printing larger than 20" or so. I've done 26" prints with a 10 megapixel, and if you know what you are doing and use a great printer it's flawless. As for low noise - well, it's low, but I'm not blown away. Remember all your lenses will be 1.6 times their focal length, so it's hard to go wide angle with this camera. But, it's easy to get super tele photo. I use it with the 24-105 L lens, which costs almost as much as the camera is worth it.
This decisions is tricky - it's very solid, I recommend it. But if I were a first time DSLR buyer right now looking at mid-range cameras, Canon has no advantage over Nikon. The D90 is terrific and cheaper, the D300 and D700 are amazing. Why did I switch to Canon? Simply because I like their lenses better on the high end. The Nikon 80-400 is slow as a dog, although sharp. I would much rather have the Canon 100-400 L. Nikon's high end lenses seem to be a little more expensive, and frankly, there are fewer out there so they are harder to find, new or used.

Good luck, happy shooting, this a great camera.

  2. I got this to evaluate against an EOS 1D Mk II N pro body. Bottom line, I am selling my EOS 1D Mk II N and keeping the 50D.

  3. I just upgraded from a Rebel XTi. I absolutely love my XTi, but I needed a little more. To see the kind of work I shoot, go to www.flickr.com/photos/waterbubblz
This camera is everything canon promises. Though I've read every review on here religiously, and read about the errors some have received, I have not had any issues with this. I have tried it with both my 50mm 1.8 (BUY this lens, btw) and Macro 60mm 2.8. Outstanding results.

    Highly recommended!

  4. Nothing sucks more than hindsight. And hindsight, you see, requires time and experience.

In my case, Time means a few months, and experience means I bought a 40D.

Does this camera just ROCK!!!??? Is it AWESOME!!!??? Don't you just LOVE IT!!!???

GREAT! I will never know. My 40D makes me money, takes good stuff, works with my legacy glass, and makes me happy. But this whole 15.1MP-brighter-LCD-"oooh-I-just-love-my-50D" thing makes me sick. All the people saying "it not sharp!" and " what the big deal?" make me happy! Make me feel I made a GOOD choice...

Sigh. Jealousy is ugly, isn't it?

I was holding out of a 5D at one point. I have a buncha L series glass, full-frame, all that. Now what's next? Can't do the 1D - I'd have to sell my kids (wait! No...).

Ah, well. The 40D doesn't exactly suck, and this was inevitable. Shoot many, shoot well, and shoot beautifully, my friends. I'll catch up next time...

  5. I purchased a 50D because I do a fair amount of bird photography, and I thought that the additional pixel count in this camera would yield better images, and also allow for more cropping room. While the images were very good, they really weren't any better than those I have taken with my 40D. I was also disappointed with the high ISO performance of the 50D, as I thought the 40D was just as good or better.

Even so, the 50D is still a very good camera. If you are upgrading from a 10, 20, or 30D, you will notice substantial improvement in features and better image quality. If you have a 40D, I think it becomes tougher to justify the upgrade. In the end, I decided to return my 50D and take advantage of Amazon's excellent return policy.

3 comments about Sony Cybershot DSC-T77 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot Image Stabilization (Green).
  1. Got my Sony DSC-T77 here in asia where it's been out for a couple of weeks and would just like to give this little slim point and shoot a thumbs up!
I used to own the Sony DSC-T70 which was an OK camera in my opinion. As an upgrade, the T77 is really a much better camera.
    Pros:
-Great image quality in good light. Compared to the T70, the T77 is produces better images in good light. The photos are pin sharp and more noticeable are fine details. When I take portraits with the T77, I now see pores and individual eyelashes!
-Slimmer and lighter than the T70, the T77 really is a pocketable camera that you'd want to take with you all the time. It's so unobtrusive I sometimes forget I have it with me!
-Dynamic Range Optimizer helps recover shadow details without losing highlights.
-A barrage of other features like smile shutter, face detection, anti-blink function, and image stabilization helps make taking pictures more fun.
    Cons:
-I wished Sony had separate controls for saturation, sharpness, and contrast like all the Canons have. There are times I want to get more saturated colors. While it does have a vivid setting which boosts up the saturation, it also boosts up the contrast which results in harsh-looking photos (most of the time anyway).
-I think it's safe to say that this camera takes better picture in good light. The quality definitely goes down as the light levels go down. I think the problem with such a small sensor and lens is that in lower light levels, the camera compensates by choosing higher ISOs which results in more noise and more noise reduction which produces photos that are less sharp and less detailed.
All in all, I really like this camera, and at this small/slim size, I think this is as good as it gets. If you're looking for the smallest and slimmest camera that takes quality photos, then give the Sony DSC-T77 a try.

  2. This camera is an improvement of the T70 which is a great camera,
they made it thinner and lighter it is truely a pocket camera.
With more mega pixels and a 4x zoom this camera is hard to beat.

  3. This camera has been wonderful since I got it. It took me some real long hours researching the details before I found it here. Here is some of the data I found out so maybe it can help the shoppers that are unsure of its stats (I found these on the web):

    Resolution: 10 Megapixel
    Optical Zoom: 4x
    Focal Length: 35mm-140mm
    Lens Aperature: F3.5-F4.6
    LCD size: 230,000
    Onboard Memory: 15MB*
    Movie resolution: 640x480 VGA
Battery life: about 225 shots (depends on flash and other uses)
    Dimensions: 3.8" X 2.4" X 0.6"
    Weight: 126 grams (4.44 oz)

    * this will give you about 1 photo at max resolution (maybe 2). Buy a memory stick!

What you find in the box:
    * Cyber-shot DSC-T77 camera
    * NP-BD1 rechargeable lithium-ion battery
    * Battery charger
    * Station plate (for the optional camera dock)
    * Paint pen
    * Wrist strap
    * USB + A/V cable
    * CD-ROM featuring Cyber-shot software, Cyber-shot Handbook and Step-up Guide
    * 55 page basic manual (printed) plus 171 page full manual (on CD-ROM)

Now for the review: Realize that this has a very small lens physically. The amount of light that can come into that lens when shooting is a good deal less than a 35mm DSLR camera. That being said there are those that argue that this is not a "true" 10 megapixel camera. All I can say is that the photos are excellent. You may have to use the flash a bit more than with a standard 35mm camera due to the smaller lens size.

The uploading is very easy. Its a Sony so the included software is very well made. Easy to use and intuitive.

All in all a very nice pocket camera to take everywhere with you on your vacations.

Thank you for reading my review.
