  1. This is a great camera for the price. Durable, grat photo quality, easy to use.

  2. i love this little camera! but, my charger broke for no apparent reason; it just stopped working one day. i'm currently in search of a generic replacement from eBay...

  3. The only good thing I can state about this item is the option to do black & white internally. That was nice. Within 2 months of purchase the charger stopped working completely so I couldn't charge it. Also almost every picture I took blurred unless I had perfect lighting. I purchased this camera from Office Depot which I also highly recommend not doing. When I told them about my problems with the camera (I bought a protection plan and was completely lied to about the perks of the plan) they told me I could wait a year (or at this time 10 months) to get a gift card for the store for the amount of the camera... so I had to go out and spend extra money to replace this camera. A lot of effort for a camera I wished I had never purchased.

  1. i dont know what people are complaining about battery issues. i guess it you set every option to its highest setting, you might not get great battery life, but its enough to get you thru 40 to 100 pictures. i generally use it for work and take pix on the lower setting and get at least 200-300 pix out of a set of batteries (rechargables).

  2. I took wonderful photos on this little camera - people were repeatedly suprised to learn they weren't from a fancier camera. I was so sad when I lost it!!

(I did have some problems after about a year with it turning off unexpectedly, but thought it was just my own clumsiness! Maybe not...)

  3. In my opinion it takes excellent photos, the quality of video is even good. As far as its ergonomics it is practices, I do not complain her.

  4. I originally bought a s630 in november '06, and hated it because of the battery life. And I returned it not long after, but last november, I bought an s730 on clearance. An impulse buy... But this time I bought rechargeable batteries. nihm? and the battery life was fabulous. I also changed the battery settings to nimh and I think that had something to do with it. I had two new alkaline, non rechargeables and used them. 10 pics. This camera took wonderful vibrant grain-less photos, and was very easy to use. Over one charge, I could take about 400 pics. And with a 4gb SDHC card, it held about 1100 pics at full resolution. And SDHC is SO much faster.

  5. This is actually the second S730 I'm purchasing, the first I brought about three years ago and it's been the best camera I could have ever asked for, there aren't a million useless settings meant for professionals but there aren't a million equally as useless pre-settings; it's a perfect camera for someone who wants the convenience of a point and shoot but also knows more than your average joe when it comes to taking pictures. The only draw back is the fact that if your LCD screen is somehow damaged you're going to either need to send it back to be replaced or simply purchase a new one if you want a fully functioning camera which is what I ended up doing. I mean, my first camera still works and takes pictures and all, but I really have no idea what I'm doing unless I use the manual since I can't see anything on the LCD and even then I don't know if the framing of the picture is right until I get it hooked up to my computer. But all in all, for the price, this camera is a steal.

  1. I love this camera. The pictures turn out clear and sharp. The camera is easy to use. The software has great options for creativity with your pictures.

  2. Very average camera overall. Good to very good outdoor pictures in daylight. Fair outdoor night time pictures. Fair to average indoor pictures with flash- not sharp and crisp like outdoor daytime pics. Decent battery life. Nice compact size, although a little heavy. Average video with sound. Lots of extra features, although I question how many are really needed or useful. I think there are better 7MP cameras out there, for roughly the same price...Just not impressed overall.

  3. Excellent camera. I am giving it 4 stars only because the alkaline batteries are depleted too quickly. I am now using lithium AA's. They're supposed to last 7 times longer, it they are to be believed.

  4. In September, based on last year's Consumer Report recommendations, I purchased both this camera and the Canon S3 for a vacation in Japan. This Pentax was to be my back up. I always carry a second camera. Too many horror stories of ruined vacations. I used this camera for 260 photos and 3 videos. The Canon for 30 photos. Incredibly, other than the excellent S3 zoom feature, no quality difference between the Optio and Canon S3. I did use primarily the auto focus in both. Excellent videos, longer than the S3. Took good low light photos in the Tsujki fish market in early dawn hours, and good outside night photos of lighted buildings in Ginza. Some red eye effect. Awesome pet photos. You can see every strand of hair on my chow chow. This camera is very easy to use, and takes SDHC cards. It replaces a camcorder, with excellent sound quality, and is an excellent photo camera. Original pair of AA batteries died quickly. Lithium replacements are outstanding. No viewfinder makes it more difficult in sunshine. On my return, I ordered two more as Christmas gifts for my adult children. A great gift at a silly list price. Go figure. Final note. I purchased a holster pack fitted at my local camera store, to carry my camera on my belt. Small enough to fit perfectly. Stayed on my belt during the long flight to/from Tokyo. Hugged the seat belt. Barely knew it was there.

  5. I have had this camera for over a year and have take about 1000
photos with it. Almost all in Auto mode. Pictures have great color
saturation. Focus is good - not significant blurriness except
on horizon in some distant lanscape shots recently. Perhaps I need to take a close look and clean my lens which I know has caused me bluriness problems in other cameras. Good size and relatively rugged.
    I would definitely buy again.

  1. This is a good starter camera for a kid. It's lightweight, and small enough to fit into a pocket. I was disappointed to discover that it doesn't have a flash, however, which limits the camera's use. That point isn't spelled out in the item description, so just be aware of that when considering this camera.

  2. Do not waste your money on this terrible camera. My grandson was so excited to see the Spiderman faceplates, but the is the ONLY thing this camera has going for it, and he couldn't even get one to stay on anyway.
the viewfinder is so small you can't see through it. (No view screen), the camera is so lightweight it couldn't possibly last a day of picture taking with some five year olds!!!! The directions were hard even for grandpa or dad to figure out, let alone my grandson. Confusing!!!! Please look elsewhere for a camera for your children. This one is a HUGE disappointment and I took it back the day after Christmas. Still looking for a DECENT kids digital.

  3. You get what you pay for. I thought all digital cameras had a view screen but this one does not. My kids played with it five minutes and there it lies on the bottom of the toy box. Without the view screen, it just is no fun.

  1. Great Camera, Check The Batteries

I love this little camera-- especially the video capability (640x480, mpeg1, 30fps)-- great pics and high quality video files in a really small package.

Problem: I tried a couple of these and the lens motors stopped working. Finally, after returning twice and purchasing a different model (S60-- same problem), I traced the problem to the batteries. The included Sony batteries seem to come without much power left. In trouble-shooting, I had used the new generic non-alkaline batteries that I had on hand. As this didn't work, I thought the cameras were defective. Finally in the third camera, after the same problem appeared, I bought brand-name alkaline batteries. The camera started working again like a champ.

Conclusion: If the lens stops working, but the camera will still turn on in playback mode, it's probably not defective-- this seems to be the behavior when the batteries are too weak to power the lens. Replace the included Sony's with branded alkaline or high-quality rechargeables.

Sorry Amazon, the couple of cameras I returned are probably perfectly fine. Thanks for the great service in replacing and accepting returns.

  2. I bought this camera about 1 1/2 years ago, and I'm having to send it to the shop for the second time with the same problem. It freezes, and replacing the battery doesn't unfreeze it, so off to repair it goes. The first time, the shop suggested that it was because I didn't use Sony nickel-hydride rechargeable batteries. Happened the second time using those batteries, so it's is apparently a bigger problem than that. My old Kodak and my friends' other brands of digital camera haven't been in the shop once. I would not buy this product again.

  1. I bought this because a few weeks ago a friend of mine had this exact same camera. I waited until this weekend to buy it....even though it came with double a batteries, I think I should've been warned about how fast it would drain out. Even though I didn't do alot with it, the batteries still ran out in 1 day. Overall I love it! First digital camera I've own.

    ~V~

  2. I like the camera, it works nicely, does what I want it to. The only thing is it only holds 6 pictures w/out a seperate memory chip. :(

  3. Using the 3 MP, I am getting better pictures than I do with my Canon and Fuji cameras. The menu is easy to use. I don't care for the flash time delay so I just turn the flash off and I still get good pictures. This is an easy to use point and shoot camera. The price is excellent (I've seen ads >$100). I have no major complaints. I added a 512 MB memory card which I can use to email pictures.

  4. I purchased this camera on sale at Target. The camera exceeded my expectations.

However, only a month after use, the camera would only take pictures in landscape mode. All other modes freeze after a picture is taking.

I recommend purchasing a different camera.

  5. It is a cheaper camera so for the price it does a decent job.
But I would say about 60% of my pictures come up blurry when the target isn't moving, 100% when target is moving. No matter what mode it is in. So if you are buying this to take pictures of your kids it is a bad purchase.

5 comments about Olympus D-490 2.1MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom.
  1. My D490 is still going strong after about 3 yrs. I do note the plastic door is wearing. The lens seems to be slowing as it moves in & out. The flash is no problem to use manually. I have used more basic 35mm camera and there are some things you need to do yourself- no big deal. There have been no problems as I too have gotten a card reader to facilitate faster downloads. The real problem is the shutter button is wearing out. This happened on a VHS C camcorder I owned too.I guess I am too hard on this part of a camera. I used to sell cameras for a big box store and Olympus is a good brand. It is a Ford or Chevy and dependable up to a point. As these cameras have evolved, they have sacrificed some good options and quality to go in new directions. In a way they now resemble the GM and Fords of the late 1970's. I don't doubt that Evolution in real life has had the same process and end results (Why is "Friends" in it's 20'th yr.) At any rate, I can't tell you the trips I've taken and gotten out my camera from my shorts to get a wonderful shot that when taped to my cubical makes my day: Sunsets, men shot out of cannons, Pandas at the Zoo, and waterfalls galore. Enjoy your camera and know they don't make em like they used to.

  2. The Olympus D490 is an awesome camera. I've used it for year, but someone recently dropped and broke it.
The Olympus takes great pictures. They have good color, except in flourescent lighting, which showed up as yellow. For fast moving objects, the flash is required to avoid blurring. For objects with bright light in the background and the foreground in shadow, the flash needs to be forced. In the dark, pictures will turn out with good color as long as nothing is moving while taking the picture. The camera takes longer to take the picture in poor lighting. Scenery pictures come out wonderful. I've even caught the glistening ice, mist rising from streams, and sunlight filtering through the forest.
The Olympus is easy to use with point and click, and autofocus. It also has panoramic and other options.

  3. I have owned my camera for 2 years and had nothing but trouble with it. Once the warranty expired (of course), I had strange problems with the batteries! They would only operate if they were warm! Very odd. And, just as others have posted, the camera suddenly "died" on me about a month ago. Not worth the money to fix it, I just purchased a new camera. NOT an Olympus!

  4. I purchased this camera almost 4 years ago and love it. It sold me on the olympus name. My next camera, if i have to get one, will be another olympus.

Like the fact that it uses aa batteries b/c if i get in a predicament where i need batteries, i know i can go to the neighborhood store to get them instead of being limited to propriatary (sp?) battery units like the sony. I have 2 sets of rechargeable batteries that i use and also have the separate card reader to download at faster speeds.

This camera has taken thousands of excellent pictures for me. I'll probably buy a newer model in the next couple of years but, for now, this 2 megapixel beauty is everything i need.

    Good luck.

  5. This camera takes amazing pictures. The quality of light captured in each frame is unforgettable. I have taken casual photos in different countries, and upon examining them have discovered what an amazing camera I have! It is a heavy camera, which is the only downside for traveling. This is the perfect camera for high quality prints, gallery quality images. I love this camera, Ill never replace it with anything smaller or lighter.
