  1. We have been disappointed with both camera and printer during the two and a half years we've had them. We had to send the camera back twice during the first year for repairs after lengthy, tedious phone conversations with the company to assure them repeatedly that "no, it has not been immersed in liquid" and to go through a list of very obvious things to check for and eliminate reasons for it malfunctioning. The closure for the battery is now broken on the camera - we gave up and got a Nikon, which we love. My sister had similar problems with her Kodak in a short time period as well. The printer has been very temperamental and has finally died completely.
Good quality pictures, easy to use, but I'd recommend paying a bit more to get a product that will last longer and be more reliable. We have given up on Kodak.

  2. The kodak camera we purchased worked fine. The dock broke after approximately 60 pictures. After tons of communications Kodak passes the buck and does nothing. Their customer service sucks. Do not expect them to repair anything that doesn't work. They lost it for 3 months and then made up an excuse that playdoh was jammed in our dock. We don't even own play doh or have any in our house. They are LIARS, do not buy from kodak if you like customer service.

  3. I think I wrote a review on this product before. As far as shipment and delivery goes every thing was fine. As far as the actual product goes it's a Christmas gift so I really can't rate it yet.

  4. The camera is really small and the instructions can be just a little confusing but overall good. I haven't had any problems with the camera, although people on here who have ordered it say it breaks easily. So far its reall good. The printer is really small as well. I should have payed more attention to the print size, because they print out photos less than half the size of a regular piece of paper. But if you want a small camera and printer for a good price, than this is good. It has a great feature that plugs into the computer and downloads pics. And it also automatically uses a flash, and turns it off when the flash is not necessary because its too bright. But Overall it was good buy, and Im happy with it.

  5. The printer is OK but I was hoping it would be compatible with other cameras but it isn't & will erase pictures from other cameras kinda disappointing.

  1. This is the best digitally controlled 35mm SLR I have ever used. The price tag may be high, but the features you get in one package make it worthwhile. The auto focus lock button and auto exposure lock button are located where they should be. The auto focus selector (single, continuous, manual) allows full control in every situation. The metering system is extremely accurate, and the built in spot meter is a plus. The control dial rather than an arrow up/down configuration gives you much faster control. I recommend this camera for the professional, or students. The vast amount of digital control might be confusing for the beginner.

  2. I'm diving into the realm of photography. I have always loved it, and now it was time to buckle down and become serious. I bought this camera and never looked back. This camera is by far the best camera I have ever owned. I love all the control I have over my photography. I never become disapointed and the pictures come out perfect everytime. I don't recomend this camera for a beginner, the controls are way to advaced for most. This is a good camera for a serious photographer or student. I used to think my Minolta was unable to be beat, until I got this camera.

  3. I've used this camera for almost 10 years and it's just about perfect! I am an amature but I am always hearing about the professional quality of my pictures! People are always amazed when I say, "I just point and shoot! The camera does all the work for me!" =)

Nikon is a relieable quality company and they offer 24 hour support! You will be very pleased! =)

  4. I love this camera. I bought it this year. I bought all the options afterward; MB-10, MF-26 and SB-26. I use it as my primary camera. I'd buy another one. I recommend this.

  2. Although this item was wrong for my operating system, I wanted to give the 5 stars to Amazon cutomer service! This one one Company that stands behind their policies, guarantees & high standards of service.
Great items, great service & greatly appreciated! "Thank you Amazon"

  3. Bought this camera a month ago and used on a trip. Already had over 1000 shots on it. Love its rich features - flexible. Excellent picture quality. Its image stablizer seems to be effective. I also have a Lumix 5Mp camera which is also excellent. I think that there are two limitations on the Lumix cameras people need to know before buying. (1) It does not have a "view-window" (only LCD screen). It is impossible to see the screen in sunlight when you don't have a hat or something to shield the reflection; (2) If you plan to use rechargable NiHM batteries, buy only quality rechargable with 2500ma or better. It won't tolerate less quality rechargables.

  4. Excellent camera for the money. Takes sharp, clear photos and has a good anti-jittering option. Loaded with features, but the camera display menus are a little confusing and the printed user's guide is cumbersome. That said, the camera is very easy to use for the average point-and-shoot photographer like myself. More experienced photo enthusiasts will probably get a lot more out of it if they wish to explore the seemingly endless feature menus.

  5. Camera does all that it suppose to, however it is difficult to view image in bright light.

5 comments about Nikon Coolpix S500 7MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Vibration Reduction Zoom.
  1. I love this camera, for the price.. had it for a couple months now, and overall it's great for a compact digital camera... only negative is that I still manage to get blurred images sometimes, unless I'm completely not moving or using a tripod. Otherwise, it takes very clear, lush and detailed pictures with true to life colors, and doesn't seem to burn through batteries as easily as other cameras I've had in years past, and has a lot of nice features. The Red Eye redux and direct to TV/computer works wonderfully... it's pretty fast in recovery time... and it does an excellent job in self adjusting to the light situation, no matter what it may be.

  2. I believe this is one of the smallest cameras on the market with optical vibration reduction (VR). I have a VR lens on my larger camera and find it invaluable and now consider it a must have feature. It also has a very fast startup/shutter response and the stainless steel exudes a quality feel.

I own a Nikon D80 DSLR and was looking for a small P&S to use when taking the larger camera along wasn't practical. Although it has very little advanced controls I believe it is exactly what I needed. I also like that it has a more powerful flash than most other cameras in its class.

  3. This camera looks like a little tank, and I bought it to replace a Canon Elph that really had been a tank. I had tossed that old camera in briefcases, backpacks, pockets, and it had always been fine. When looking for a new pocketable camera, I was drawn to the S500 because it reminded me of my trusty old Elph. The Nikon had similarly rugged looks. But it fails to live up to the promise.

I know what you're thinking---"Another Amazon customer who got a rare defective product, so I can disregard his negative review and look at the positive ones." Well, that's how I usually feel, too. I'm writing this review because, after my camera broke, I did a quick google search and saw others who had also bought this same new model who have had the same mysterious problem. Caution seems appropriate, maybe instead looking at a more established model until Nikon figures out how to make these new ones correctly.

About 45 days into owning the camera, I pulled out the S500, clicked the power button, and saw a white screen LCD with black splotches. It seems that the LCD panel had broken at some point in the prior week. I hadn't taken the camera anywhere stressful. It had either been in a pocket or in the small pocket in a student backpack, the part where you put pens, a cell phone, an iPod, etc. Those seem like natural habitats for a "pocket" camera. I have carried lots of electronics around (phones, iPods, etc.), and nothing had ever been damaged. But this little camera is now completely worthless. (Since it lacks an optical viewfinder, and since the menu is all on-screen on the LCD, it's really just an expensive little doorstop now.)

I'm still investigating what my options are under Nikon's warranty. Based on some quick web searching today, I expect to be told that I'm at fault for the LCD damage and that I should always carry these cameras inside a protective case. If that's so, then why bother buying a pocket camera? The protective case (and I bought the Nikon-branded one) won't fit in your pocket, and without a case, you're apparently just waiting for the little thing to shatter.

Nikon, are you listening? Does this happen to your other cameras, too, or is this one an outlier that consumers should avoid?

  4. I got some great shots with the Coolpix S500 about a month ago, I found useful Nikon's Best Shot Selection, which takes a series of shots and keeps just the one it determines is the sharpest. You can increase the camera's sensitivity up to ISO 2000 to cope with moving targets in low light, but even daylight shots at this level contained so much noise that they were barely worth having. I noticed little noise, however, in images shot at ISO 400, a big improvement over how most compact cameras performed until recently.

  5. The camera takes absolutly fantastic pictures. Unfortunately it is very fragile. We had the camera fall about 1' and hit the floor. After whicht it was no longer functional (reports "Lens Error"). The Nikon repair shop wants $150 to repair it. A bit steep for a $175 camera.

We now own a Stylus 790 SW from Olympus. The image quality isn't quite as good, but the camera is supposed to be able to survive a 5' drop.

  1. The Nikon S52 camera and the Kit it came with is a good value. Pros: The camera is tops for a point-and-shoot compact unit. It's simple to use but has lots of technical features for the more expert user.
Cons: Nikon Camera case is good quality construction but is slightly too small and tends to compress the camera On-button (turns the camera on) if the camera is inserted facing the back of the case. The vendor-supplied extra battery is not NIKON manufactured.
    Overall Value: Good.

  1. I bought this as a gift, just before I was wrapping it, I decided to open the kit and make sure all the items were there. I immediately noticed that there was a 32MB SD card instead of the 1GB card stated in the product description. I e-mailed Amazon who forwarded it to the 3rd party. A few days later I received an e-mail from the third party apologizing for the error and assured me they would send the 1GB card out. I received it a few days later. Other than that.... the kit is great and the mistake was dealt with expediantly. I would buy from this merchant again.
