5 comments about Nikon Coolpix 5700 5MP Digital Camera w/ 8x Optical Zoom.
  1. I bought this camera after many years of owning a Nikon FM-2.
This camera and those like it fill a gap for those who do not want to invest in a Digital SLR system. Yet have some control over the camera.

If you can get by with 5 Megapixles this is a good camera.

If you can, buy the filter set and the adapter because it not only protects the lens but also protects the zoom mechanism.

Buy or find the MB-E5700 battery pack which letts you use 6 AA Lithium batteries or rechargables. This gives you the best power option. (Turn off the continuous Autofocus and you will save power galore!)

No serious photographer uses on camera flash. You can turn off the flash on the camera and get a Speedlight.

The camera takes a while to master if you want to use all the features.
The metering for exposures is near perfect. The problems in low light can be overcome with some simple steps.

Set the focus on infinity for long distances shots.

Use the focus lock to lock onto something with contrast in low light situations. This is the camera's Achilles heel.

The Camera in not a pro camera and will take time to shoot download hi-res photos to memory.

I have been very pleased with camera and the results. I would like to have a Nikon D200 but do not want to spend that much.

  2. I've owned this camera since it first came out in 2003, and since I'm not a qualified camera "expert", I want to give you my thoughts on this camera. I'm giving this review as someone who is relatively new to digital "point-and-shoot" photography...

First and foremost, study the Nikon manual. Then study it some more. The controls are overwhelming at times, provided you are a neo-phyte like myself.

Second, for exterior photography on the normal setting, this camera cannot be beat! It is exceptional. The images are clear, clean, and colors are spectacular. I've photographed NASCAR at the California Speedway, and other events like the Coronado Speed Festival, etc., and the outdoor shots look great. Now for the indoor-shooting...

This is where the camera gets its two star rating from me. I do not know how to select the manual control on-the-fly. I've tried to set up controls to shoot indoor photography, but I don't have weeks and weeks to learn the settings. I've photographed people who are standing completely still, slightly moving (my kids), low lighting conditions, fair lighting conditions, and still cannot get proper images to come out.

The indoor photography is pitiful, as the colors are yellowish, muted, and nearly 90% of the time, the images are all blurred. The pop-up light is only good for 5-8 feet at best. I took some special shots of people who were stationary, and it appeared that the photo looked "good" when zooming in and out with the control. When I downloaded the CF card to my PC, the images were always blurred and the colors were way off.

Mind you, I'm not a camera professional like many of the reviewers here, but rather I'm just an average "Joe" who would like to have decent indoor pictures that looked natural and were not blurred.

I would sell this thing on Ebay if I could get more than a few hundred dollars for it, but I've already invested over $1,200 for the snap-on lens adaptors and protective lens cover which keeps the retractable lens from getting damaged. I bought this from a company in Canada back in 2003.

All in all I'm happy with the exterior photos, but am very, very, disappointed with indoor pictures. I guess this thing requires a lot of tweaking, and many, many hours of studying the little manual that Nikon has provided.

I would stay away from this and save your money for the newer Digital SLR's. I've had this for over four years now, and just wanted to write a review based on my experiences with this camera.

    Just a thought...

  3. I too fell into the "if it is Nikon" trap. Afer reading many reviews on the camera, I purchased two as my first step into digital photography. One for my wife and one for myself. We probalby have less than 1000 pictures on both combined. My wife's has been sent in for repairs twice for the zoom lens not working. I got mine out this morning to take a picture and the view finder and screen are both blank. I'm not even going to wast 10 bucks to ship it back again for repair. I still have several months left on the extended warrenty but it just not worth the effort.

And... everything about taking extremely long time to focus is true. This is the deciding reason for not having it fixed. Even when it is working, it is a very aggrevating camera. The number of good shots you miss while it tries to focus is unbelievable.

Both of my Coolpix 5700 were pieces of junk. It was a very expensive lesson about Nikon quality. With two cameras, additional lenses, battery packs, 1G memory disks, and extended warrenties, about 3K total.

Since I've only owned two Nikons, I can truthfully say when the topic comes up, "Every Nikon I owned was a piece of junk. I'll never buy another one.".

  4. The 5 Megapixel Nikon 5700 has been around a while, and people continue to love it and hate it. The optics are why you buy Nikon, and this is one sharp lens. It's complicated to operate if you want to do manual settings (M, A, S), but the Program mode will suffice for most people. It will shoot in RAW mode, unusual for a consumer camera. That gives you a lot of flexibility in adjusting the image. If you're not willing to read the manual though, this may not be the camera for you. Sort of like driving a manual transmission, it's so easy once you know how but you have to give it the effort to practice.

Nikon supports this camera with repair if you have problems, flat rate is reasonable (go to Nikon USA direct, dealers mark up). One common problem is the CCD failing, due to a Sony image sensor that a lot of camera makers used. Free repairs in about 2 weeks, but it's annoying. After that fix, this is a solid camera. I like mine, and shoot a lot of quick shots with it.

  5. I find the camera to be of excellent quality. It will serve my need for many years. The only problems: Installation disc is CDI...will not run on my computer. Had to select programs from Nikon to download and don't get all the functions I want. The memory card is old technology and the 10 megs they supply is a joke. I've ordered a 2 gig card so I can take more than 6 pictures at once.

  1. I love this camera, it has great picture quality and it's user friendly. All of the pictures I take are very crisp and clear and it's perfect for any time of day, any light inside and outside. I absoultly would not trade this camera in for the world and I think if you're making the decision wether to buy this or not that you have found the perfect camera for you and you should go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed. And I'm not an easy sell either.

  2. I bought this camera primarily because of its compact size. It is one of the smallest good quality cameras on the market. Obviously it can't compete with a Nikon D series or Canon Rebel, but if you read the manual and learn the right settings, it takes great quality photos for a point and shoot. It has a rechargable lithium battery with long life, which is important because there is no viewfinder and all sighting is done on the large LCD screen. The controls and menu are easy to manage. For my first digital Fuji, I am impressed. The price has gone up since I bought it, but at the $117 I paid, I thought I got a great deal.

  3. Hands down, one of the best cameras on the market. I use it almost everyday.
Great for just pictures with friends or family, or semi-professional photos.

  4. We purchased three of these cameras for our children (well young adults) all in different colors. The first thing to grab my attention was the ease of use the second was the quality of the picture this camera was producing. My Husband and I purchased a Sanyo several months prior to buying these and we were happy with it until we saw the quality of the pictures of this camera. One of the features I like the best is the slide on the front turns the camera on and off, in addition to that it protects the lens. Now if they could design a camera to protect both the LCD and the Lens that would be perfect. I really like this camera.

  5. I took more than 1000 pictures and many movies and upload Youtube. It is very good and I love this camera.

  1. I bought this camera after extensive research to take with me on a three-month semester in Europe. My main criteria were: 1) low price, 2) good picture quality, 3) short startup and lag time between photos, 4) portability, and 5) good battery life. Over the course of the semester I managed to take a good 1600 pictures of people, landscapes, and artwork in all different settings, and frankly the image quality blew me (and my family) away with its sharpness and vivid color. Lag time was great, much better than otherwise comparable cameras I've used. Battery life was excellent, too; I managed to get through the whole semester only recharging about four or five times (though this was probably because I tried to avoid using flash as much as possible). Video is quite passable, with decent sound quality. Durability was impressive; I managed to drop it at least twice, once on marble, and it is still in perfect working order.

Drawbacks: image stabilization is digital and not, in my experience, particularly useful, so if you're in low light and don't want to use flash you will want a tripod or at least a solid object to steady it on - but that probably goes for most cameras anyway. The autofocus can have trouble in low light or when you're aiming at a hazy horizon for a landscape shot, but otherwise no problems there. The main thing that disappointed me was the lack of manually adjustable options under the "manual" setting: it allows you to control white balance and exposure, but that's about it (and even there you have to choose between presets).

Bottom line: if you're a pro then this is probably not the camera for you. However, if you're like me and want a portable, inexpensive camera that takes quick, sharp, semi-artistic pictures, then you will be happy with the Finepix A820.

  2. The camera is fine as long as nothing goes wrong. Fuji has the worst customer service I have ever delt with. They pass you from one person to another and do everything they can not to help you. Be prepared to deal with the worst customer service in the business. I really hope this helps you.

  3. i bought this camera in July and was immediately impressed. Now its 5 months later and it is starting to act up. The auto focus has become unpredictable and when you power up and down the camera is making a "mechanical" noise that is making me worried that one day it wont power up at all.

I really thought this would be my last camera for a while but it seems that I'm back to shopping again.

  4. For the first 5-6 months, my 820 did fine with 2700mAh NiMH batteries. Suddenly, upon turn on, the empty battery icon flashes and it shuts down within 5 seconds. I am using the same batteries and even bought new ones. No deal. Sent it back to Fuji for repair. They sent it back with the same problem. It's a great camera otherwise. Lots of features and video w/sound. But now it just doesn't stay on long enough to use it. Alkalines will last only 8-10 minutes and less with flash. I'll try the repair route again. It might just be my camera's problem, but if you do buy it, don't get too emotionally attached.

  5. This is my everyday 'backpack' camera, when I'm not carrying my slightly larger Fuji S700 or much larger S9000. It replaces my excellent A400 because of it's added features, such as the 4X zoom instead of 3X (not a big difference, but enough), as well as all the added scene position choices. I've done close-ups, portraits, night shots, landscapes and indoor scenes with and without flash, and I'm impressed. Enlargements are no problem for this camera, either. It's easy to carry just about anywhere. Learn to use the ISO settings and scene positions and even get a tiny tripod--the camera will amaze you.Fujifilm Finepix A820 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom

  1. If you are looking for a cheap camera with a higher res. then here it is. Like I said, you get what you pay for.

  2. I bought this camera for Christmas and it is absolutely horrible! It takes really bad quality pictures and it has a very noisy lens. It's a great looking camera but the screen is only 2 inches which is very small. This camera is not a good buy for it's class.

  3. The HP Photosmart M527 is an all around well built camera, espicially considering the price it can be purchased at.

The body is all metal and it's honestly built like a small tank. It feels good and strong in your hands. The weight of the camera is also very evenly balanced, so you can hold it in one hand and get clear shots in almost any situation. The ergonomics and overall design also help with this. Every button on the camera can be accessed with just your one hand.

The screen is very nice, bright, and colorful, even on the lowest brightness setting. I really don't have a problem with it being "only" 2". I can't imagine a situation where the "small" screen would negatively impact the ability to accurately frame a shot.

The image quality, for the price, is also fantastic. The shots can be a little noisey. But honestly, how many cameras in this price range will not produce noisey pictures? Considering the price, the image quality is great. Sure, it doesn't look as good as a Canon that costs an extra hundred dollars. But that doesn't mean the image quality is bad. The noise disappears completely when you shrink the picture down to fit in an email. Afterall, you're not emailing friends pictures that are 3.3MB in size each, are you? ;) When printed out, using a photo printer or getting them done professionally, the prints are very colorful with good detail, definition, and color saturation. They will definitely be able to sit next to all of your other framed prints, or go in a photo album, and only you will ever know that it is a digital print because nobody else will be able to see the difference in quality.

The camera also offers multiple shooting modes that can help improve the image quality in certain situations. For example, it has a "Portrait" mode which can help the look of closeups dramatically. It also has the obvious "Night" mode which will take care of any dark or murky pictures in low light. There is a "Beach and Snow" mode which will help you with those high contrast shots in bright lighting. It has a Macro mode which has obvious uses. You can also manually adjust certain other parameters, such as ISO speed. However, you cannot adjust shutter speed or more advanced settings like that. But if you find your pictures aren't exactly what you want them to be, there are definitely modes that can help you get the quality you desire.

The camera also has a decent movie mode. It can record roughly 30 minutes of slightly better than VHS quality video, with sound, on a 512MB memory card. It's not very good in low light, but it can be good for those quick moments when you are out and wish you had a video camera. However, you cannot zoom in or out while recording. You can adjust the zoom before and after recording. But not during.

The camera also has very extensive photo editing features built-in, like the famous "slimming" effect, and you can do other things like add borders. It also has a very thorough Help system.

There are only a couple of minor gripes I have about this camera. The first is battery life. Real world battery life is about 100 shots on two alkaline batteries. So get some rechargables or lithium batteries. The second gripe is that the memory card slot is right in there with the batteries. So that can be a little bit of a pain if you use a memory card reader instead of hooking the camera up to your computer to transfer pictures.

Overall its a great camera for the price, as long as you keep you are realistic with what to expect. You're getting a complete package for not very much money. Not many other cameras under the $200 price range offer such a complete package. If you're looking for a great camera on the cheap that is built well and has a ton of features, this is definitely one to look at. However, if you want absolutely pristine image quality, you're better off looking at the $250+ Canon PowerShot A6x0 series. For me, this camera is the one that is built like a tank and will get taken with me everywhere I go. But I will keep a higher quality Canon around for those times when image quality is more important than the quick, yet good, shot.

  4. I've had digital cameras before, but this one is has it all. If you want to take really good pictures of your life then buy this camera. The HP Photosmart M527 6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom has more features than I'll commonly use , but I think all of them will come in handy in specific settings. Easy to use and great photo quality.

  5. The HP camera is very easy to use and takes great pictures, its small enough to carry comfortable but does not feel fragile

  1. My family gave me this camera for my birthday. It takes great pictures and I love the video capability. It's small enough to carry in a small purse so I can have it with me all the time. I like to scrapbook so that's important to me. The face finder is a neat funtion as I have wiggly kids and a pet. Downloading the pictures is very easy and user-friendly, not a lot of wait time. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a compact camera with lots of capabilities.

  2. Perfect for on the go!This camera kit is great for on the fli trips because all the gadgets are small and easy to fit in one tiny case. Also the camera itself has amazing features for it's compact size.

  3. We recieved our Canon SD1100 IS camera and all of the Cameta accessories real quick and used the upgraded 4GB SD memory card at a family luncheon. Everything went well, easy to use etc. until we went to print some pictures and our new HP printer was unable to read the card. So we put the card in our Wii game console to view on our TV. Guess what, card not readable. I called the cameta Company and was told very matter of factly that a 4 GB SD card has too much memory. And I would have to use an SD card with less memory. How is a novice customer to Know?

  1. I am loving the quality of pictures on this camera. The pictures are beautiful. I also love the many different picture options available that are pre-programmed into the camera.

After about 4 months of use, the flash died while I was in Mexico on vacation. I heard a small pop right as I tried to take a picture. As it was under warranty, I sent the camera into Panasonic (I had to pay shipping) and they fixed it and sent it back in 2 weeks.

So, while I love practically everything about this camera, I worry that it is not durable enough to last a long time. I don't think I am too rough with it.

  2. I bought this camera about a month ago, so far it has been very good to me. It takes really nice quality photos. The battery lasts a really long time. I take pictures of pets a lot and its very hard to get one with them sitting still, and it's hard to use a flash because pets get really bad red-eye. But this camera has a specific setting for pets! There are so many different settings i haven't even discovered them yet. I think this camera could make anyone a great photographer. I totally recommend it.

  3. I recently purchased this camera through amazon. If I were to purchase again, I would probably choose the comparable Sony or Canon model. While I appreciated the Japanese quality of the camera, the performance left much to be desired: my first outing with the camera was to a high school dance that I had organized, and I could see nothing through the digital viewfinder--there is no standard window viewfinder--and this inability to see anything, mixed with focusing and color problems, led to horrible photos. I also found the camera's function controls, as well as the bundled software, to be very non-intuitive, with a large number of commands required for navigation. I do not recommend this camera for general purpose use, particularly among buyers who may wish to take photos in darker environments and/or do not want to spend great amounts of time reading and rereading the user's guide to ensure proper functioning of the camera.

  4. I had been very pleased with this camera until it suddenly developed oil spots on the interior of the lens. I was instructed by Panasonic to send it in for repairs. After 3 weeks I finally received my camera back in good working condition only to have the oil spots appear again two weeks later. At that point I requested a replacement but was informed by Panasonic that my only recourse was to continue to send it back for repairs. Unacceptable. I would strongly urge all considering this product, or any Panasonic product, to think long and hard before taking the plunge as, my experience has been that the company will not stand behind their product.

  5. This camera takes very good photos in the day, but awful photos at night. What I didn't like about this camera, is that you will need a tripod to take pictures if you are taking photos without flash or in an ambient with poor light, because your are going to get awful pictures.
When you take pictures and you watch them on the display, you think they look beautiful, but when you download to the computer, you will see that some are shaken.
Look for another camera. I am very sure that there are better than this one.

5 comments about Sony Cybershot DSCW80 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom and Super Steady Shot (Pink).
  1. I used to have an Olympus Stylus Zoom 80 digital cam and my finace bought me the Sony Cybershot DSC-W80I last year. I liked the Olympus, but it was an old model and I wanted more functionality in a camera. However, I am disappointed in the Sony Cybershot. It is great for taking outdoor pictures, but don't even think of getting a good picture indoors, of motion or anything that's not stationary. It boasts the Double Anti-Blur Technology with Super Steady Shot, but this is a joke. A lot of the pictures come out blurry and you have to spend a lot of time adjusting the settings to figure out how to get a good picture. It does not take very good low light images even though it has adjustable sensitivity, twilight, and ISO settings. I tried to take pictures at a party where there was average lighting and colored lights, and they ALL came out blurry unless I used the flash, which still didn't look great b/c everything was too bright for the actual setting. Without the flash, the people in the pictures were literally transparent; They looked like ghosts and there were streaks of light across the images. Horrible.
It does have great red eye reduction and fast shutter speeds for taking multiple pictures (again, these will come out blurry if there is ANY movement). I've had the Sony Cybershot for 7 months, but I am going to go back to Olympus.

  2. I am very happy with this camera! Great picture quality, self explanatory functions, and great size for taking with you every where! I do not need a hundred different settings, or the latest super savvy technology- I was just looking for a camera that makes it easy to take good pictures- whether it's a special occasion, or just a fun everyday moment, and this camera is great for that. The battery life is good, too! Another big plus is the great flash; out of all cameras I have had, it has the most flattering, soft-but-still-illuminating flash; people look great, not like deer caught in headlights. I took me some time to find a camera case for it, since I didn't want to spend almost $40 on the Cybershot ones; if anyone else feels the same way I can recommend Swiss Army's "the sherpa" I believe the style is called- fits perfectly, and costs less than $15!

  3. I am not sure about all the "positive" reviews on this camera. Maybe it is the particular one I have got, but I do see some very negative reviews. I grew up in a photo studio and know enough about cameras. Only ~1 out of 3 pictures I took with this camera turned out reasonably good. Majority of the pictures were blurry and grainy, sometimes even in well-lighted settings. Overall quality of the pictures are not nearly as good as my ancient Canon G2 (3 or 4 MP? I bought it 8 years ago, unfortunately battery died 2 years ago). What a waste of many cozy moments! I have decided to trash this piece of junk and get a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, which I hope will work better. Don't think I can return my Sony to Office Depot since I bought it 9 months ago.

  4. If you plan on taking pictures of small children or baby, THIS IS NOT THE CAMERA! As some of the other posting mentioned. Motion produces Fuzzy or Ghost-like image. Low light produce grainy pictures. I know some would say that the way it works but I don't recall my old 2.0MP sony camera was this bad. The only optimal setting I find is a very bright sunny day inside or outside and your subject is not moving around then you have great pictures. I also find that sometimes you think you took a great picture as seen in the LCD but when you actually see it on your computer, its a total different story.

  5. This was excellent service. I was a little nervous ordering over the internet, but delivery and product were top notch.
